    I have often listened to your voice, but it was nice to see what you look like when I was looking for Pablo info. I am originally from Galway but after 32 years in Scotland I have lived in Holland for the past 14 years. I love coming over to Northern Ireland because my daughter lives in Armagh. Your videos are really helpful.😊

    I was at a Deserres Art Supply store today, and was pondering purchasing Staedler Triplus Fineliners - they were $35. Then I saw this set of Pablos for $60. I grabbed them, and can't wait to give them a go. Lovely colours, they lay down so beautifully!!
    Thanks for your reviews, Harry. It was first place I looked to evaluate what I had bought. I did not know too much about Pablos, but the Caran d'Ache is what hooked me. Greetings from Canada!!

    What in your opinion Harry is the difference between the Pablo and luminance? You say there is little to choose between them, but in what way, how do they differ?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 лет назад +4

      Hi sorry for the delay in getting back to you with this question. There is no doubt that the Luminance are softer than the Pablo. Until very recently I had always thought that the Luminance were wax based and the Pablo's oil based, however, I spoke to a Caran D'Ache rep who explained to me that it is not that clear cut. All pencils have a mixture of wax and oil in them, its just some have a little bit more of one or the other. Also no company will ever tell anyone the true ingredients of their pencils as they are closely guarded secrets and the baking temperatures also play a part in how hard or soft a pencil is.
      However, in terms of quality they are both amazingly high quality pencils, like I say the Luminance is slightly softer and therefore the coverage of larger areas is easier. With the Pablo's being that little bit harder they will hold a point longer which is why they are synonymous as being a detail pencil. The differences are slight but both pencils are of the very highest standard. I must mention and make clear that these are just my opinions and what I think of a certain pencil, the next person may not agree. I just have to mention this as I have come under a bit of criticism lately from people thinking I am pushing my views on them, which couldn't be further from the truth. I encourage everyone to try the pencils I am reviewing, start by purchasing one or two pencils open stock and this will give you a feel for them. From there you can decide whether or not to invest in a larger set. I hope this has been of some help to you and thank you so much for your support.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      Wow, that is a really hard question, I am going to be doing a few videos soon, pitting certain pencils against one and other , like the Polychromos against the Pablo, the Lyra Vs Koh-I-Noor, the Holbein Vs Luminance etc, so I'll leave it till that video for the long and explained answer, but for now, I think the Pablo for me. Which is a hard call but watch the video when I upload it and I will explain it better. I hope you don't mind this answer?

    I bought a set of 12 pablo, I wonder if I'm better to buy a 120 of pablo OR a 120 of derwent artist for the colors range ??? and also a little bit for the price ? your opinion ???

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 лет назад +2

      Wow that is a tough question because my favourite pencil is the Derwent Artist, but I know so many people don’t like them because they are not very pigmented, whereas the Pablo hold a lot more pigment and both pencils have a pretty hard core, the Artist is definitely the harder core of the pair. If you are wanting to get the 120 set in either set that is still a lot of money even though the Derwent Artists are cheaper than the Pablo. You already know what the Pablo are like with your 12 set, before you spend all that money, if I where you, I would buy a 12 set of the Derwent Artist of even a few individual. Try them out because you may not like them, as I mentioned they are not heavily pigmented, they are a beautiful pencil for lots of layers. As soon as you try the Artist, you will know yourself immediately which 120 set to buy. I am sorry I couldn’t be of more help mate but you are intending to spend a lot of money and I would rather you know exactly what you are getting before spending so much mon on either set. You must be excited with France through to the Semi Finals of the World Cup my friend, could you imagine an England France World Cup final.

    Great video Harry!! 😆 Happy new year to you! Congratulations on the review column, definitely a great choice on their part bringing you in. I will definitely look for the next issue...I haven't bought this magazine before. As for the changes, including your brand name, I think you made a great choice. This name allows you to review more then colored pencils. 😉 I was going to ask, you know my specific work and media...could you venture an opinion on what would work better for me, the luminance or the Pablo? I love creamy so I can push into the grain, but transparency like the polychromos works better and of course lightfast. Ughhh! I had it set in my mind that I was getting the full luminance set this month, but then you go and show me these with more colors...now I don't know. 😲 LOL! Maybe I should just get another burner and wait on these. 😉

    would you say it's better then Prismacolor pencils?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  8 лет назад +1

      Frost_Gaming hi There, that's a hard question to answer because if you take the Prismacolor pencils without all of its problems, it is a hard pencil to beat. The Prismacolor pencil core is among one of the richest creamiest and smoothist cores on the market. Where I personally feel they fall down is the quality control issues with the wood barrel and core. And I only contribute my finding to personal experience. I purchased a 72 tin of Prisma and more than half of the pencils had been sharpened below half way before so much as marking a bit of paper. The Pablo is a slightly harder core than the Prisma but still soft and creamy also the build quality of the Pablo is perfection personified. So for now I'd definitely say the Pablo is better than the Prismacolor but I am eagerly waiting for the Prismacolor sharpening problem to be addressed and fixed and it can be because Prismacolor use to be the best pencil for artists all over the world. I know this is a bit long winded but I hope it has helped

      if you try the mitsubishi hand crank sharpener 2000 KH-20 from Jetpens...I am having zero problems getting a VERY sharp point on my new set 150 Prisma from Mexico...They cost in the set...less than $1 each. The Pablo and Luminance work out to be $4-$5 each pencil...like 4x as much as the prosoma colours...something to think about...really recommend picking up one of these sharpeners...I love them...

    @ctabs2985 8 лет назад +1

    hello harry, I'm a new subscriber! I'm working my way through all your pencil reviews. my first set is the 150 prismacolor. I do really like them, but for the money and how little care they use in making the pencils have made it so I don't buy anymore. the wood is cracked up and down, so that makes it so the wood won't sharpen right. and the leads are constantly broken. and I take good care of them. so I'm looking for another brand that would actually be worth the money. out of all your reviews what is your pencil of choice? thanks again, can't wait to go through the other reviews. oh and how much does this set retail for? thanks again! PS I don't wanna sound mean but your shadow makes it difficult to see the swatches clearly, the brightening of the colors is hard to see

      C Tabs C Tabs Hi there, that's a tough question which depends on a few things. If your budget is quite high then I would say the very best pencil on the market is Caran D'Ache Luminance 76 set. After this but equally as expensive would be the Pablo which I review here. Then Faber Castell Polychromos. I think if you have a set of any one of these pencils you won't go too far wrong. If on the other hand your budget is a little less then you still have some excellent pencils to chose from. Lyra Polycolor are a beautiful pencil as are the Derwent Coloursoft and Spectrum Noir ColourBlend. Koh-I-Noor or a nice pencil also but I'd put Lyra, Coloursoft and Spectrum Noir above them. I hope this has helped you but it is really difficult to pin point one particular pencil to recommend there are so many excellent pencil companies now. Finally you are right about He shadow and for that I am sorry. I always take photos and display the photos rather than what I've done here, I don't know why I forgot to add the swatch photos, once again I am sorry for that, if you head over to my web site there are really clear images over there.

      The Art Gear Guide thank you so much it does help. I'll prolly use my birthday as the excuse to spend more lol. and please don't apologize about the shadow, I'm sure we can all still see. I just know how I would be since I'm OCD about that kind of stuff. But thank you again and you really awesome work, can't wait to see all the videos!

    I love your reviews. I can't wait until you pit all of the pencils in each category against each other.

    I understand that this is old and it is a very good review of the pencil, however there is some misinformation.
    Pablo pencils are wax based not oil based. Maybe it didn't say so on the older tins, but the newer ones carry the description "wax lead".
    Frankly since Caran D'Ache doesn't write that information anywhere else the confusion is understandable, but please correct it so people don't buy a product believing misinformation.

      You are absolutely correct about confusion etc. When I first started out doing reviews I used to always contact the companies and ask if the pencils were wax or oil and depending upon which day of the week you contacted them would very much depend on the answer. So I used to get half the viewers tell me I was right and the other half tell me I was wrong.
      I thought that in order to make sure I was delivering the most accurate reviews on the internet I would have to get to the bottom of this rather than simply leave it. I also discovered that a lot of the time when I was contacting the companies, it was only customer service people I was talking to who didn’t always have the technical information.
      So I contacted the Chemist for three of the most widely know pencil companies in the world, which took me almost a year to getting email addresses or phone numbers to.
      I discovered that there is no such thing as a purely just wax or just oil based pencil. All of them have both wax and oil, there are lots of different types of wax as well, which make a pencil feel different.
      For example, most people think wax pencil equals soft core, but the Derwent Artists are predominantly wax with a bit of oil and they are the hardest least pigmented pencils about.
      The answer I got from all three Chemists was pretty much the same and it was incredibly complicated but it all boiled down to the same thing, no pencil core is just wax or just oil, they have varying quantities of both as well as a lot of other things that are top secret to each company.
      Thank you so much for your comment and I hope I have explained this as best as I can, it is really complicated and I have been meaning to do a video on the entire subject.

      Thank you for your answer :)
      Yes, that is true, pencils use a variety of oil and wax as binder. Depending on the chemical makeup and proportion of the substances, the pencil will have different properties.
      I'd really love a video break down of this subject as it will help better understand the difference in certain pencils.

    Ive got a good deal of the pencils you have revirewed and I tend to agree with you a lot more than not.
    So you saved me money on the Marco Renoir pencils, -if you don't think highly of them, Im sure I won't either, so, they dropped to the bottom of my wishlist.
    Now you will break my budget with this review. *big laugh*
    Congrats on the collumn in the magazine.

      I am so glad that my reviews help you out a bit and sorry about the old budget, I know what you mean, it happened to me as well, watching awesome colored pencil artists made me want to follow them and with the same supplies. I can remember when I purchased the Luminance 76 set, I was so worried I had done the wrong thing spending so much money on pencils, that was until I got them. Thank you so much for your comment and support, I really appreciate it.

      Chris Calverley I know, it is on the pencils as well, I have no idea it's significance but I'd love to know. I will try and find out and when or if I do I will let you know.

      Chris Calverley I knew you were just joking about but it is something I've wondered, I'd be interested to know, of all the numbers to have printed on a tin or pencil, why that number 😂😂. All the best mate and I'll keep you posted if I find out whether or not there is a bit of Devil Worshiping going on here 👹🤣😂

    U have to tell Pablo is a oilbased pencil. Dont use it on paper if u do comercial art. Oil slowly eats up the paper. Pablos is really bad in lightfastness. In a 120 set 93 change color in a acceptable way and 35 is fugitive. The Faber Castell polychromos 120 set 3 are acceptable and 14 is fugitive. The rest is lightfast.(Tested by independet CPSA) The best wax pencil is Caran Dache luminence.
