    Over the last year or so since I've been watching and listening to your videos when you started off with your first old set of pencils your treasured Brunzyll (sp) and was always fascinated by your ability to layer (as a matter of fact I started hearing layer layer layer… in my sleep LOL - I am so pleased that you have expanded your pencil collection because if you are a person with a "passion for pencils" then the expansion of your collection should be part of your passion not only just the use of them - I have so many of the ones you demonstrate and I nodded my head as I am coloring - I bought my Pablo's first open stock and then purchase the entire set as I do often with all my pencils. I have so many and unfortunately to my husband's dismay, I probably have every set but a couple - OK maybe more than a couple but I think that if I get anymore I will be divorced LOL. I cannot work with markers I tried again last night and it was an epic fail - I would rather play with my inktense or a practice mixing wax pencils like my lumens and my prisma colors, mixing my Pablo's with my polychromos, playing with my first set of a DERWENT watercolor pencils which is how I started coloring. I had no fear then and I enjoy listening to you and watching you and hearing your birds because where I color I did not hear birds because I must leave my windows closed due to my spring allergies here in Massachusetts in new England USA. I too have a heat intolerance what you just mentioned, but that is now due to my multiple sclerosis and I this year will be turning 54 and I wish I would be turning 43 again. Thank you so much for your coming videos I don't necessarily enjoy people chatting loudly and being overly expressive in their coloring if you know what I mean I think for me it is more a zen experience I do like to shade and embellish but I like to use my pencils and not necessarily all the nifty stuff which I have - but it all gets used to rarely. From one with the "passion for pencils" to another - I look forward to listening to the rest of your video and again thank you very much I don't know your name but I would love to in future be in touch with you sometime - even if it's just to say THANK YOU 😊

    Very glad to hear your positive review... thank-you. I do not have any Caran d'Ache so when I saw a review that they were a hard and a hand fatigue pencil and the person was sending them back... it bummed me out to hear that. Each to their own..I think after your review I would entertain the thought of purchasing these pencils 😎

    Caran d'Ache blender pencils are an oil-wax blend and work well with the Caran d'Ache pencils but also for the Polychromos.

    Do you think the heat may have had a part in the pencils laying out so much pigment? When that tip snapped off I drew my breath! I KNOW you don't push hard. I'm going to try four or five of these. Thanks for showing them off with your lovely techniques!

    They look like really good pencils. Happy you got them, you deserve it! ;)
    I noticed you mentioned Irojitens as well in the video... what do you think of them? I was planning on buying them because I need a bit more muted and pastel tones in my collection and Irojitens seem ideal for that. I saw your previous first impression video about Irojitens... has anything changed since then? Are they TOO hard? That is my fear, I usually work with Faber castell (the "cheap ones", not Polychromos) and they're pretty soft and blendable.

      LaCarly8 I bought irojitens as my first set my first complete set of pencils as a gift for myself last year before anyone knew of them or was using them on Instagram or online Carly. I know that the question was for Passion for Pencils, but as a colored pencil at Addict, colorist and amateur (?) artist I have a use for them but only alongside other pencils I have a trouble using them if I don't use a blender either a solvent or another type you should ask this lovely woman and I don't know her name and I'm so sorry I do love her expression and experience - but I have had these pencils for a long time and actually I just took them out yesterday because they do have colors that are gorgeous so what I call them are "Japanese artists grade pencils for Japanese artists" - they are very hard lead, I recommend if you get them the first thing you do is sharpen them because you want to get this wax off that needs to for a proper lay down - they are what I would call paper dependent - I choose my paper wisely when I use those pencils - ask other people what they think I think the colors are beautiful the names are phenomenal there named after flowers and Bird colors and they do have an amazing range of colors but I would suggest you buy a few before you buy the entire set. Tombow does sell small sets of them on their websites so you can try some before you buy the entire 90. That's just a suggestion of mine and I know I answered a question that was not directed to me. Thank you for paying attention and I'm sorry if I hopped in on your bandwagon @ passionforpencils ❤️

    • @LaCarly8
      @LaCarly8 7 лет назад +2

      Thank you so much, your answer was very thorough and it will surely help me choose whether to buy them or not :)
      I was planning on buying just one set of 30 like you suggested by the way, I was thinking the one with cacti on the box (I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the set) because at first glance it seems like the one with more dull and pastel tones.
      If you have any other suggestions or comments do feel free to step in, I'm still relatively new to colouring and every little piece of information is very much appreciated ❤️

      LaCarly8 I'm not too again take away from this lovely woman who I follow for information - I also have the FC students and I think they were great in the beginning and even now - I have not given away many of my student grade pencils I also recommend pencils like Steadtler which (only by the German ones please - the Noris) and you can color well with anything and if you want more information you're on the right channel! I think you've chosen the right set of the irojiten and they will be a terrific addition to your ever growing collection for if you're like any color is the one thing you will love is collecting pencils and using them all! I have and Instagram account if you would like to look at it and I'm not trying to get another follower anything is just you might find some more information there and I can be contacted but I also want to let you know that this lovely lady is so wonderful and I listen to her all the time and I learned from her all the time and I wish I could meet her! You get them and let US know how you like them! I wish you the best and you can find me if you like @diana2dogs on IG - for additional information! I also post a lot of my flower pictures for #ColoringInspiration :-) good luck and keep up your good questions and experiment with everything! Your in a great place to start!!

    Henny I’m the same way about the pencils, being with small hands. This is my 1st time using them. I actually purchased so many brands to follow, I’m noticing they feel so tiny. Will you be doing a water background color along soon? That would be amazing. Cannot do water at all and your backgrounds are truly amazing.

    Now that you've had Pablos for a while, have you come across a colouring book with the paper suitable for colouring with Pablos without pressing very hard?

    • @PassionforPencils
      @PassionforPencils  4 года назад

      No. But I haven't done much colouring in colouring books lately. I am planning on trying the Pablo pencils on surfaces other than paper. They are 'powerful', so they might do very well on wood, for example.

    I turned 73 last July 😊😊 you are only a chicken 😊😊 I have had a few open stock Pablos for a few years to try and have sent for the full set of 120 and am waiting for them. I also tried the CRan d Ache Supracolour 11 which can be used with water, also Albrecht Durer by Faber Castell I tried a few AD then bought the set I can use them wet or dry and they are soft and well pigmented as well

      I didn't go to art academy or something like that. I had had some sketching lessons while studying architectural engineering, but that was all. I just love love LOVE painting and colouring from a very you age. I only started doing it on a daily basis when I got Johanna Basford's Secret Garden book. The colouring sparked my passion and I haven't stopped painting and colouring ever since.

    Hi, I would like to know how would you compare the Pablos to the Faber Castell Polychromos. And how are they different from Prismacolor Premier. Thank you!

  • @Kandicookheller
    @Kandicookheller 7 лет назад +3

    I am trying to figure out the differences between the Luminance and the Pablos. Can anyone make that clear to me so I can decide which ones I need? (I don't NEED either, but the word is WANT, more than the other.....) I want them ALL, I swear.

    • @magicsundew22_bailey_65
      @magicsundew22_bailey_65 6 лет назад

      Kandice Heller I know this was 5 months ago but the different between the two is luminance pencils have a softer lead for a softer blend they come in 76 pencils and 2 blender pencils. Pablo’s come with the 120 they have a harder lead but can be blended just oil based requires a little more effort to blend. But from what I’ve seen here they seem to blend amazing so I’d say get the Pablo’s first because they come in 120 for less then get the luminance pencils later if you still wanted them

    • @lo3551
      @lo3551 6 лет назад

      Kandice Heller I have both and I’m a late subscriber so my reply is very delayed. I adore Luminance but I do not like Pablo. But now I have watched this video I am willing to give them another go. I’m an addict so I have most sets. Cost is a factor for many so if that is an issue perhaps Pablo’s are more budget friendly with gorgeous colour choices. Luminance have nowhere near the colour range and frankly their range lacks colours I’d prefer to have but I’ve read they’re really made for true artists so they tend to have earthier tones for skin and landscape etc.
      As colourists we love colours. I adore Luminance anyway and as I love doing skin I’m happy with them. I’d like to mention Holbeins are fantastic and imo far outweigh Pablo’s in laydown and blending and the colours esp pastels to die for. But I stumbled on this channel and I’m finding a new way for my 120 Pablo’s. Again though Holbeins are very expensive. Just a thought for you to research them 🤗🌹

    I like hexagonal pencils a lot. I meant the look of it. I love these more than the Luminance actually. Luminance to me is way too soft. It's a really nice gift you got =)

  • @grannieannie40
    @grannieannie40 7 лет назад +1

    I have heard people say that the Pablos are just the same as the Luminance, what do you say to that? I'd also like to know how you decide where to put the darker colors & the lighter colors? Is this something you can learn or do you just use your artists intuition?

    • @karengreer
      @karengreer 7 лет назад +5

      grannieannie40 I suggest looking at photographs of plants and flowers. This will develop your eye for observation, and you will see where the lights, shadows and tones go. You can also take your own photos of the flowers and plants you have in your garden under different light conditions: early morning, clear sky, late in the afternoon, etc. You will then see how the colors are affected by light in the same object. With little practice you will start reproducing these colors in your books.

    • @karengreer
      @karengreer 7 лет назад +1

      grannieannie40 But in the end, coloring is choosing color pallets that make you happy. There is not wrong or incorrect coloring unless you are a professional artist 🙂... Then you can be criticized.

    • @PassionforPencils
      @PassionforPencils  7 лет назад +2

      I think Pablo and Luminance to two different types of pencils. There are similarities, though.
      Choosing colours is something that came to me gradually. I used to do it all wrong, especially light and dark, but thanks to Johanna Basford's Secret Garden book, endless hours of practicing and looking at nature I slowly discovered how to choose my colours. So I agree with Karen Greer, take a good look at the colours, highlights and shadows in nature and try to imitate what you see. Enjoy the process!

    Okay, I only own one Pablo so far-- Brownish Beige-- but I would say it's harder than the Irojitens. Or at least it holds a point better, which is what I care about, since I prefer to use a much sharper point than you do. Different strokes for different folks! ;-D

    You have now so many different pencil brands. How would rate them in order from the ones you love the most, to the ones you don’t like so much? I have different pencil brands too and I love my Prismacolors, followed by the Polychromos and on last place are the Derwent Procolours. I would love Pencils, that are a bit harder than Prismacolors but softer than Polychromos. Could you recommend a brand?

    • @nabi767
      @nabi767 5 лет назад

      I am more inclined to harder pencils myself. So I like Polychromos and Blick Artist' which people say looks the same to Koor-i-noor Polycolor. I even like Verithin pencils. I tried Derwent Studio and Procolour open stock but didn't like them.
      I have Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor. Henny has a first impression video on that. They are oil-based and softer than Polychromos but harder than Prisma Premier. They are more translucent than other pencils and that is why I bought them for my first full set. Some people don't like them bc their barrels are thin which make them not comfortable. I sometimes use silicon pencil grips that kids use on them. I bought the set on ebay cheap from a seller from Poland with free shipping.
      I also have Brunzyeel Design 48 set, because Henny has mentioned them often. I heard it's a Dutch company but made in China these days. I guess that is why Amazon US has a good price. But I bought them anyway and I like them. They are wax based and harder than Prisma Premier and softer than Polychromos. They are on the opaque side. They are far better quality than Premier pencils but only have 48 colors. But they are well pigmented, blend well and have very good lightfastness even with violet colors. They come with a nice package in drawers and foamed paddings.
      I also heard Holbein Artist pencils are oil based but softer than Polychromos. They look more on the opaque side. I'd like to try someday. They have 12 and 50 set with only pastel colors. Hope it helped.

    Baffled you didnt use water to blend/paint with them. The Caran'dache site had a video using them like watercolors and pencils.

    • @shadowguard3578
      @shadowguard3578 3 года назад

      Baffled? Really? The tin says these are water resistant color pencils, and the pencil on the tin says it’s permanent. That’s why she didn’t use water.

  • @82tatjana
    @82tatjana 7 лет назад

    the luminance are wachs based. and pablos are mixed wachs and oil based. this is why they are so opaque and make this kind of wachs bloom and break.

      The Holbien pencils are wax and oil base , Would the pablo compare to the holbien ?

    • @lo3551
      @lo3551 6 лет назад

      Rebecca Terry IMO no way. I’d go Holbeins any day over Pablo. Much softer laydown, buttery soft and easier to blend with magnificent colours but very expensive. Just my opinion but I even added the 50 pastel set to my 150 full set as I found them on sale and it was far cheaper to get the set than replace singles. Now I packed my Pablo’s into a gorgeous new pencil case for ease of having 120 on hand without trying to spread out 3 layers and I’m off to practice again.🌹

    I did not care for the Pablo's, not after using the Luminance. They were too hard and scratchy for me.
