Consumers going into a retailer such as Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Family Dollar and Big Lots and then heading out the door if they can't find any deals is exactly why these chains are hurting right now. But these chains have nobody to blame but themselves thanks to their active and systematic de-contenting of their merchadise, which is nothing more than inflation in sheep's clothing.
@@RandyMiller-YAS Big Lots has plans to close 340 stores because their price/content ratio results in their merchandise being more expensive than regular stores like Winco, Target or Walmart. In other words, it makes no sense to shop at Big Lots. Also, Big Lots is selling remaindered food which is much closer to expiration than at regular grocery stores, meaning their food has even less value. Big Lots, along with Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Family Dollar have been de-contenting their merchandise for the last several years to the point that there are no deals to be had at their stores when it comes to food and everything else in their stores.

Consumers are spending more to buy the things they need leaving less money available to buy the things they want. I am about to pay off my car loan early, that is my Christmas present to myself and my family. I have already paid off my credit cards and I am not going to put anything on them this holiday season. If I can't pay cash for it, it's not happening. I bought apples at Walmart, the best price I could find, the apples were $1 dollar each! Really? Rate cuts now signal the FED has given up fighting inflation and will just let the people suffer the consequences. The US Treasury doesn't want rates up too because it can't handle the interest payment on the National Debt. Essentially neither the consumer or the government can kick the can any further down the road. The can is now the size of a beer barrel filled with concrete. People are trying to save more, because they see the inflation rate is too high and they can't afford their normal expenditures, which forces them to save just to afford the minimum inputs they see they need in the future. You are not going to splurge if your gross income is either not growing to meet your needs and or your current financial status is stagnant and you realize that what you have (cash) is becoming less valuable over time.
