The traffic jam before the Gotthard Tunnel was because of the dosage lights, doseerlichten in Dutch, a traffic light which makes sure that traffic isn’t standing still in tunnels. To prevent accidents, because emergency services have difficulty to reach that place. We also have dosage lights at tunnels for the same reason and also on highway entry ramps during rush hours so highway traffic can flow better and won’t be distorted by too many cars entering the highway at the same time.
In the Netherlands in traffic the first responders just use the shoulder that’s why we don’t create a gap here. Also Germany has some awesome roads to go south on when you have the time next time like the romantic road or the 500 trough the black Forrest!
You should try to drive anywhere under Napoli, that’s the real Italian driving - organic, unpredictable, by-the-seat-of-your-pants experience. Pure hardcore fun 😊
Luckily you got a reasonable sized car and you aren't a newbie to the narrow European roads. Even though I often have the impression many Italian roads are some of the narrowest you can find in Europe. 😅 Agree, Italian drivers are somehow special. But if you drive the way you're used to in the Netherlands (or similar) you'll be fine. Still I was never brave enough to drive in Rome or Naples. 🤣
Americans miss out on having such ruined car market with no wagons either from artificially kileld demand(by marketing suvs as bare minimum as family/long distance cars) and stupid law punishjng imported watons(raising prices drasticly) and by idiotic emissions that treat cars harsher than suvs and trucks, when it should be other way around.
When I drive to Italy (from the Netherlands) I always try to avoid Germany as much as possible, exactly because of the reasons you showed in your video. Yes, you can drive as fast as you like, but on a long stretch it is tiring. Add all the traffic to it and my average speed is always lower than in France. Driving in Italy can be fun. The autostradas can be very old, which means that alignment can be very tight. If you like driving it can be fun with all the strange corners in there. But overall I don't think the autostradas are that good. They seem expensive per kilometer when you compare them to France or Spain, while at the same time, they are generally much better in France and Spain. As for Italian drivers, I like how Jeremy Clarkson put it: "When Italians are driving they always seem to be in a very big hurry, however, when you schedule a meeting with them, they are never on time"

Of course, a Dutchman from the heights of his perfection and efficiency can only note that although the Italians have the largest defense company in the European Union, an excellent naval industry, an oil and gas industry of great importance (despite the fact that in the past be tempted to destroy it by killing its founder). an automotive industry that is still present despite everything. and overall they are still the second industrial force in Europe. Despite this, they remain a population of sheep farmers and pizza deliverers. because this is what the people of Northern Europe and our American masters expect and demand from us...A people who after all do not deserve respect, a country which (according to American acquaintances) must be a great amusement park, a tourist Oasis managed from outside, without development, without dignity. to visit once or twice a year to throw peanuts and then return home aboard their expensive SUVs or their business class flights
There is a reason not to use a phone while driving, and it is the same reason not to drive with one hand. It is reaction time and ability to make instant corrections with the steering wheel. I believe it is regulated by law pretty much everywhere, and filming it might bring you some trouble, not to mention the "screw-everything-i-am-the-king-of-this-road" look. 😅 You should definitely start working on changing your driving position.
@@Kerleem I know it is very unlikely to get fined because of one or two videos, but if the police happens to catch you on the road, then they have the power to do that. Be aware of that on your trip to other countries. You make really good videos explaining different car specific topics. I found your channel by watching the video about the Nethelands' highways, and subscribe since then. This style of holding the steering wheel may be a subconcious habit from the american highways, or it may be this FEELING of safety in a modern well insulated and computerised car.

Also, precision on the steering wheel is gone, when driving one-handed, and that is probably what happened to the white car. A little bit too much to the left, then a little too much to the right, and then it was too late to straighten the car back on the road...

Yeah it makes sense, it was just an insane volume of traffic that caused that delay that day.

The Gotthard pass goes over the mountain. The tunnel goes through the mountain. So you could, in theory, use the pass to avoid the tunnel.
