I grade the 49ers (B+) they got a that grade because Brock Purdy interception , the two dropped hand offs by mason the fumble on the kickoff and not scoring in the first half when they were in the red zone 10 yards and less still way too many nonsense penalties 12 men on the field but defense played a better game and happy they won. They can't play this way and need to tighten up there game
Slow your roll. At best it was a sloppy performance against arguably the worst team in the league. Penalties, missed tackles, more special teams f-ups, redzone inefficiency. This team needs to get healthy and play much better ball.
Not sure if Purdy watches the channel, iirc, you mentioned his split to him in the locker room and his neighbor in the lockers said "what?!". Either way, great stuff David.
Love the win, certain players on defense were noticeably better this week. Still a lot to clean up though. Jayir Brown's tackling needs to get better, he had one great tackle at the LOS but there were some head scratching diving whiffs that he kept doing that drove me crazy. Campbell seemed more urgent and improved. Charvarius Ward was better this week but he was still playing pretty soft. In fact the CBs and safeties all need to be better tacklers moving forward, the LBs need help and these dbs need to be more aggressive. Way too many bad angles and arm tackles from these dbs in the first 4 weeks. Aside from Fred Warner this defense lacks that mean streak. Something we're desperately Missing with Greenlaw out. I expected our safties to take on that burden and be those aggressors, but it hasn't really happened and devondre Campbell isn't that guy either. Good win though. Looking for them to build on this one. The Dline looked more inspired as well.
A lot of QBs are dinkers and dunkers in this era, but Purdy is not one of them - although that is how the talking heads described him. Just take a look at Aaron Rodgers this year. He's too conservative to win anymore, which is why he can't win playoff games and is overrated.
I don't know all that. All I know is from my observations, since the coming of Brock Purdy, the 49ers reach 20 points or 24 points in the 1st or 2nd quarter they usually win their games. Also when the 49ers reach 20 + points it means that they are going to reach 30+ points. Other teams in the NFL know this and also apply pressure on the team to not reach 20+ points.....DC's have studied this and have coached their defenses to execute the stragedies to prevent the 49ers from scoring 20+ points. Today was the beginning...a good beginning of counter attacking through their defense this issue!!!
I honestly can't think of this game as a "turnaround" game. This defense still has me worried, and they'll need to show up for a better team than NE to start making me feel more confident. NE's offense is honestly anemic: stop the run, and there's nothing more to it. Our offense looked decent, mainly because the WRs didn't drop balls, and instead made some fantastic catches. Purdy looked kinda mid - for him - but he's the last guy on the team I worry about, because "mid" for him is well ahead of league avg. He's a top QB in the league to me, so I grade him from that level. Mason was excellent; the guy runs like a true vet, with vision and patience - he rarely misses the lanes. Don't want to think about that run game if both he and CMC are unavailable; Guerendo runs like a rookie, and doesn't give me confidence yet. Offensive line is worrisome; too many mistakes there are mitigated by Purdy's quick reactions and feet. I don't think this defense is going to catch up to the offense this season, so the offense is going to have win most of the games going forward.
Dave is wrong about a few things here. Special teams needs to be emphasized. Not just serviceable. Super Bowl teams need to be great in all 3 phases! That attitude has hurt the 49ers enough. Smart coaches, analysts, fans, supporters etc recognize this.
The penalties look bad but compared to the league we are only 22nd for most penalties. It's just the type of penalties have us 11th worst in yards. Hopefully this gets better
Defensive notes: 1) a lot of second and third stringers along the DL really stepped up; 2) Lenoir trending towards shut down corner; 3) nice effort from Mustapha and Green in the secondary; 4) Floyd needs to improve pass rush lane discipline - seemed Brissette was frequently able to escape to the right (of the offense) b/c Floyd crashed inside rather than maintaining outside contain
It's good win!!! The defense needs to be better!!! No. 24 in the NFL!!! It's not good. Something needs to be done!!! They need to stop the run in the middle and the deep pass!!!
Glad to see the Niners get a solid win. This was a good game overall, with some step-up performances from players we'll need to do well. That said, there were still plenty of sloppy moments that could have hurt a lot more against a better opponent. This was a good step in the right direction, but there's still plenty to go.

There is so many improvements that need to be happen, a win is a win, but this one was so far to sloppy against a shitty Pats teams.
