Over RUclips with a laptop speaker, the old one by a mile
In fairness Dave, you make any amp sound great.
But if I had to choose, most definitely the MK1.
The old one sounds better to me.
Thank you very much for the comparative video, your channel is exceptional. These things really help. I subscribe to your words. The Boss sounds fatter and wider and the extra Bluetooth and looper options are also a great success. Forgive me if my English is not completely correct I am using the translator.
Hero Dave. Loved the Boss.
Hello from Belgium.
Dave Simpson is my hero, and the man Who drank the wine while everyone else was sniffing the cork
i absolutely love these reviews🫂
The Roland sounds much better, not great, but the better of the two
Listening on my TV through a LG sound board w/ sub and the Roland sounded better. I do appreciate your comments regarding room sound, therefore one needs to try both to decide for themselves. Nice comparison video! 👏
*sound bar
Street 2 much darker and compressed. Mark I sounds like a guitar amp. But both good. Bravo!! Dave.
Cool Dave .
I am looking 4 one 😊
Thx
Love the comparison Dave - thank you! For me its the Roland by 2 country miles!
as always boss sounds like a cardboard box, so these aren't really cubes they're wedges if you go back to the early days of the cube they are square ,orange and ranged from 25-50 watts and were great sounding like you were playing through a 4x12. if you can find one grab it
I think Dave is just absolutely phenomenal guitarist. And definitely one of the most nicest genuine person on RUclips. I have been listening to music all my life and play myself and teach the kids with guitar workshops when I get the chance in my free time .in my honest humbled opinion he is by far one of the greatest guitarist I have heard if not the best .I have been listening to music for around 50years and playing since 1997 teaching since 2011 .the only reason I am mentioning this is for people to know am not a newcomer to music at all and heard just about everyone. One of the perks of being an auld sod. So I don't say this likely the man has worked so hard and crafted his talent beautifully. He's a good singer aswell and he's without a doubt a world class musician. Well done Dave really well done. Ps the Roland won this round lol
They both sound great but the Mark 1 sounded more clear to me and the 2nd one was a little more darker sounding to me ! Great video! 👍😎🎸
Definitly the boss is The boss from the bosses, Boss. Greetings from Belgium. Have a nice weekend Dave.
I have to agree with those who said the Roland sounded MUCH better. The second sounded cheap. I like its features, but the sound of the first was to me far superior.
The Roland in samples 1&2 sounded great & rounded whereas the boss sounded tinnie & didn't come alive until sample 3 all out distortion, great test Dave & rocking the room as always 👍
What a fantastic video have a wonderful weekend Dave also Monday is my friends birthday also my birthday ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Roland for me mate.
To my ears the best sounding Cube is the old one by far - much more detailed and dynamic. I am actually quite shocked as to how good it sounds with my ears tuned as they are by constant use of a Katana 100MKII and a Marshall DSL20. Why is it when companies bring out new "improved" models the only thing that really seems to be improved are their proift margins !
I have the boss one and love it “in the room”. On the recording and so on RUclips I think the Roland came across better. It’s interesting to hear your thoughts on that. I tried plugging a valeton gp100 in to minre and was shocked that it sounds boxy on the aux in…. So the built in amp models are definitely tuned to this cab/speaker combo and “in the flesh” am very happy with the boss! And the looper is a big bonus
Just watched this in bed, Sunday morning. Could not disagree with you more Dave: the Roland just sounded better on every setting to me. Maybe in the room, I'd like the Boss but not from today's hearing...
Roland for me. The Boss sounded kind of tiny
video three of requesting By the Way Tone/pedals Break down!😀😉
Am I allowed to not especially fond of either? 🤔😬
be*
Of course. :)
I bought a Roland spirit bass 15w 12" speaker cheap, paired up with a hiwatt 15w through a red vx amp behringer using the two line outs, el cheapo stereo rig ,why didnt i do this years ago xx
2:06 (just keeping that 'cause it's nice)
9:43 (that's a BEND right there)
The Roland sounds way, WAY nicer on the cleans! The Boss has a bit of a mid-range honk to it, probably a horrible comparison but it almost reminds me of the Randall RG combo I had as a teenager. In Jimi mode same deal, the Roland is a bit cleaner, more presence, whereas the Boss almost has a VOX thing going. When you go into full distortion, the Roland blows the poor Boss out of the water. The Boss sounds like it has a heavy blanket over it or something. Leads sounded great at the very end, but like you were saying, not sure this is a "cut through the mix" amp so much as a busking/practice-with-friends amp. Good stuff either way!
Hey Dave, saw your tool video on Andertons, was AWESOME ! For the love of God and all that is Holy, can you please help me dial in panel settings on katana 50 ? Doesn't have to be spot on, just similar. John
Roland clearer than the tinny sounding Boss.
I think for me the Roland sounds better/ if you played through a transistor radio it would sound good
Defo the Roland for me. The Boss sounded tinny and lifeless. But then what do I know?!🙃
I tried to listen while driving, ie not looking at the screen, and with all the "this one, this one, that one, this one" I had no idea which one you were talking about. This one or that one? 🤣
Roland for me, especially on the heavier tones. The new one has more features but sound wise I like the Roland and I have always regretted selling a Roland Cube 60 - that was epic in a medium sized room!
I thought the clean sound of the Roland was better but the extra functionality of the Boss is appealing. I use an old Roland microcube for home practice and it’s missing the ability to play a backing track through it. I’d like that
I like that the Roland sounds a little creamier to me, but I would like to add that the Boss is newer and so the speakers are not nearly as beaten to a pulp as the Roland which will affect the sound a lot. Would be curious how each sounds using the same set of speakers/cab.
You are holding the transistor radio! 🤣 I stuck some studio headphones on to get a proper listen and the difference, to me, is night and day! The Boss sounds like the front grill is rattling! It, to me does sound like a tinny transistor radio! I don´t think either of them did very well with gain but, again, the Roland nailed it! I would like to see this comparison in an acoustic setting where, I think, most of them would be used. Acoustic guitar, a few vocals.
It's weird. Listening to him describe the sound it's like he's got the audio we're hearing switched. Like when we see him playing the Roland, we're actually hearing the BOSS and vice versa. The BOSS sounded "hollow". I am confused.
@@visualdragon ^^^^ This 100%
2 sounds low fi
Great video thanks ! The Roland sounds better much clearer .
In my ears the Roland wins with a street length. Also like my Roland Cube sounds better than my Katana 50. More defined and clearer. But to each his own as you said.
I have both, and the older one sounds much better and is more responsive (analog vs. digital perhaps?). It even kept up with a drummer easily at a backyard party jam. On the new ones you have to max out the bass and mids, and it still sounds weak and fizzier in comparison (at all EQ settings). The features on the new are good though, including the vocal harmonizer and bluetooth input and the built-in looper. I like having both for now though, as well as the 50-watt Cube Street EX. Thanks for your review, Dave!
For me the old one sounds better but I agree with your assessment of the sound comparison.
For me a brighter sound will always be better because I have reduced sensitivity to high frequency.
The difference is not great and if you have use for all the added functionality I think you are on the way to making a sound decision. Excuse the pun.
Sound😅
Hi, Dave.........
listening thru a pair of Genelec's (my computer speakers :) ), the Roland sounds much more balanced and fullrange . The Boss has some lo-mid / mid bump.
But it might be good in a busking situation where you have to cut thru envorimental noise
Roland sounded the better of the two.
The Boss had too much compression.
I’m a huge Boss fan, and the Roland just sounded more open and clear.
Dave did you have the treble turned down on the new one? It sounded like it had blankets covering it. I like the old one better.
I love my cube street 2,it’s red,it’s loud,it’s awesome, got the Bluetooth thing and even got a proper switch pedal for it 🙂
Sorry Roland sounded better - the Boss was thinner & tinny sounding. 😊
Sounds like the new Cubes speakers were still tight and not broken in.
Roland all the way in this test. 🎸🍻
A question out of subject!
SX sst57 or Jet js300 is better for sounding closer to Hendrix songs????
Jet.
The Roland one was the boss
Of course Auto -cue like 👍 As😅😅😅😅❤ rehearsed ☁️ 🌤 🌥 ⛅️ 🌧
Dave hello mate, on either of the two Cube Streets when you use the line out feature, does it mute the internal speaker ? or can you line it out to a P A and still hear sound still coming from the internal speaker at the sane time ?
The line out doesn’t mute the speaker no.
its hard to top a Roland...just good solid sounding amps..
but the Boss is ok too. I just got the artist mk2 so Im on the Boss bandwagon again....bigtime ! I wish Roland would come out with a larger combo though , 100 watts or better
JC120 is Roland, plus everything Boss.
👍
Takk!
Thank you. :)
Good gravy Dave, when you mentioned in the room the Boss sounded like it was still in the box and as you say darker, the Roland was far better in my humble opinion.
I think the Roland sounds more open, but I'm guessing the speakers need a little more breaking in on the Boss. But as a fellow loyal Katana user, I trust your ears in the room Dave.
Boss was definitely better. Fuller sound. Roland was thin. I think people like it because thin cuts through (trebly) and gives the appearance of clarity, but in terms of a full, balanced sound, the Boss all the way. Easy winner.
The old one sounded way better to me, more 3D, less boxy--especially on clean and Hendrix examples. Maybe it's because the speakers are way more broken in. Thanks Mister Dave!
👍😍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Next test.... Acoustic with vocals please Dave! If I were going busking with my electric I would take my Spark 40, with battery ;-) that kills the tone of both of these with a "proper" electric guitar tone!
Yes I agree...it's like a Christmas Turkey should be ....Warmer....Darker and Fatter
Could boss fox the sound with a firmware update?
You keep tapping the Boss and you can hear the tinnyness(?) of it! 🤣
Have you tried the Katana Go yet? Wondering how well the app can capture actual pedals.
I have tried it and its amazing.
Awesome! Better than the Mustang Micro? Are you able to create an accurate Frusciante inspired pedal board with the app?
Dave, great playing as ever but different opinion this time. The Roland (MK I) sounded much richer/fuller to me. The BOSS sounds hollowish.
But as you said, it’s a taste-thing.
Boss sounded surprisingly better to me, especially for your style of playing. More saturated.
The Roland is streets ahead.
I prefered the Roland, the Boss sounds Boxey, thats my opinion :)
Hi Dave.✌🏽😎🎸..i'd need one of them mostly for melodic clean soloing over tracks (and singing)...i'm for the new features but the boss kind of sounded a bit boxier (at leats on the video).. why would that be? 🤔
Probably youtubes compression. It tends to ruin sound and make it tinny.
And if it's just for home? Wouldn't the boss dual cube lx be a better option?
I personally don’t like that amp but give it a go.
@@thedavesimpsonI have the Yamaha thr 5 and it doesn't convince me either. On the other hand, I have a Vox Ac4tv and it is wonderful. It plays in another league.
Hi 😊👋
Hi👋 I’m sorry I don t understand well, I wanns know which of the two has more volume?
There both the same with the volume.
Both good, Roland was brighter, boss loud, but darker
😎👍👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
Both offer something different but playing by the rules the Boss wins!🙂
boss steert cube sounds like shit, I am glad I found your video, makes my upcoming purchaes much easier
Ill buy your old one plz ebay uk
Its close, but I enjoyed the Boss better. I thought the cleans were much better.
Roland by a fair margin is better to me. Must be the speaker
I prefer the Roland. Boss was not so clear to my ears.
I like the sound from the first better in this video, I like the brightness. I hope they become cheap used and I may get one. :)
Technically still (trio)😅 what's in a name?
It's not the trio anymore dave🤫
Boss cube street 2 , is much better !
Great comparison! I've bought a Boss Cube Street 2 recently. I definitely loved the lead channel that cleans up very nicely but there is an annoying noise gate effect that you cannot adjust or cancel it through the front panel of the amp. If anyone knows how to deal with it, please tell me :)
Here is an idea how a cube street 2 sounds with a wah pedal:
ruclips.net/video/XtFa3O5nszc/видео.html&ab_channel=PedalSessions
Roland much better Boss sounds like a wet blanket effect.
Marshall. Oh, er..Roland - has more higher range.
Either one isn’t worth $500+ no matter how good they sound ..
Roland sounded and reacted better to me
Agreed. I’ve had both, and the high end on the new one is just off. The Roland was built better and sounded quite good. The Boss is a bit louder, but it just sounds tinny, especially the amp sims. The three band eq on both mic and guitar channels isn’t too good either, the mid control is a nice new addition but it’s way too high of a frequency to help with the tinniness. My original Roland died, mostly, it seems to have an internal power supply issue. I miss it.
@@rowanmartin4397 Thank you for sharing your experience with the amps mate ! At some points, I may try to find myself a Roland. Such a shame yours died. Hopefully there is a way to fix the issue.
Roland win for sure.
Roland sounds so much better! I bought the Boss version a year ago after watching your other video and others. But I have just returned to RUclips trying to find out why it sounds rubbish. I'm sure it's fine for acoustic, vocal and keyboard but any distortion kind of electric guitar and it sounds pants!! Wish they made a better app for it like the Spark app or irig :( may have to get the old version and a separate looper. Now to choose between the Sheeran looper or boss RC 30. Did boss win it for you because they gave it to you free? Subconscious bias maybe? You seem very defensive towards the boss. Maybe if you did a full tutorial of the app for it please?!?!
It has a loud gain hums...
Mine doesn’t. :)
@thedavesimpson you just made my day... I'm retuning mine...thank you
Boring
I’m sure your not. Don’t be so hard on yourself. :)
Hands down I think the Roland sounds better, brighter and clearer. Nice playin' btw bro
The original on those mics sounds more authentic especially clean and jimi the mk2 sounds really bassy muffled and more digital or something 🤔
Who cares!!!!!
Not you obviously, so off you trot. :)
