I have created a new channel, Grill and Garage, and the first video is a much better/faster version of this video, but also shows exactly how to reconnect the spring, based on the feedback people have given in the comments. That video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/D3Rj1k1TU3s/видео.html If you like grilling/smoking meats, puttering in a shop, and working on your truck, you can find my new channel here: ruclips.net/channel/UCZQkcphDY4_5ohN1bfMFDNQ
As some commented here, I broke the clip too, the spring was tough and I also had Ford's extendable bump steps to work around. However there is a fix for the broken tab. I put a screw in place of where the tab was. Lesson 1. I screwed the door closed :). Backed off the screw, put the spring on and then I screwed it back in a little more for strength and had to file the tip of the screw and take out a small bit of plastic to make clearance. Works like new, thanks again for getting me started with your video!!
I love how you spent the last 2 minutes of the video explaining how easy it was to pop the clip off, then said “and now I’ll just pop the spring back on” then cut that whole section out. Arguable the hardest part of the process which resulted in a broken plastic spring tab for me. Thanks for the advice.
While I do appreciate all the details that went into this how-to, I'd have to agree with @twarg on that one point. That spring was indeed a bitch to get back on and this video did suspiciously cut out that part! No worries, I got it on, but c'mon, let's be honest in the future on these things, yeah?
I literally just ran into this issue with my 2018 F150 and I got it all fixed thanks to your video! I appreciate the time you took to do this and the explanation.
As many said, putting the spring back on was the biggest PITA. I used a needle nose pliers and made sure fuel door was shut. Good video explaining the issue.
The dealership said it needed an entire new assembly and wanted to charge me $300. A screwdriver and 3 minutes later... Ha!!! Your video literally just saved me hundreds! Thank you!
Don't they always? RUclips saved me hundreds of dollars on penny parts. My hill assist malfunctioned. A $20 part from a youtube video and 20 minutes later (granted it's never a breeze, but crawling under the car or dashboard and saving hundreds is worth it) it was all done. Same with my chime when it acted up. They wanted to charge $200 just to look at it.
I’m so happy that I found this video….. I had my F-150 into the dealer for a different issue and I mentioned this exact problem to the service tech and I was told that it would be $330 to repair this problem. It took me about 3 minutes total to make the repair, and that includes getting the right tools out. Thank you!!
Thank you for explaining how the functionality was compromised which ensured me this was the correct video I must continue to watch. Thanks for your time and effort.
I spent 30 minutes, perplexed why my 2017 F150 fuel door was loose. I figured it was going to be another classic $500 fix at the dealer until I found your video. EXACTLY as you describe it, the plastic pin was not inserted all the way. Likely from recently driving 100+ miles on a dirt washboard road. I simply disconnected the spring, rotated and pushed the pin in snug, reconnected the spring and my fuel door is good as-new. Hint: I could NOT get that spring to reconnect using pliars. I had to wedge both hands up there and grab it with fingers to reconnect it. YMMV. It took less time to fix than it did watching your video. :) Thanks again.
Great video hardest part was getting the spring back on pliers were hard to use under there, what I did was wrapped painters tape around my thumb for padding then was able to compress the spring with my thumb and slide it over in place..
Thank you for this information. My fuel door has been like that for 4 years and I have just dealt with it until today it almost got ripped off at a car wash. With the info you provided, I was able to fix it in less than 3 minutes. THANK YOU...
Fixed my 2018- the trick is to get the pliers ( needle nose) on the bottom of the spring and pull it into the slot, then simply re-grip and pull it through, worked like a champ - tks
Thank You! your video is easy to follow, the angles you used and succinct dialogue made it feel as if I had done this repair before. less than 15 minute repair, saved me $150 for part and dealer instal. I cancelled my appointment after fixing it myself. So happy that I did not try to take the entire unit out like the pre 2015 fixes required. spent 1 hr trying to get the cap ring off before watching your video! G from Utah
Can't say thanks enough for you posting this video. Door wasn't loose and floppy but would stay open about an inch. Got under there and re-seated the door hinge thing. Of course wrestling that spring was a mother but all is great now. Thanks again
Thank you for this video, took me about 10 minutes. Wasn’t able to get the clip out of the housing but still managed to turn and push the teeth back in and receipted. Door is working now! Thanks again! 💯
This worked very well. I caught the part of placing the spring in the grove and using the electrical pliers to rotate the spring in place and real quickly finished.
Absolutely awesome ! Thank you tons for this video ! This just happened to me today and it ruined my day . I almost bought the part that was 45$ with shipping . After this video I had it fixed in 10 min . The spring being back to where it was suppose to was a pain . I wore gloves and that seemed to help . Thanks again !
I have a 2015 Ford F-150 Lariat and the same issue happened to my truck...must be a design flaw so they can keep customers coming back for costly repairs. I want to thank you for your thorough video on this issue. The key item for me was to make sure you have the spring set in that bracket before sliding it towards the nozzle...simple 5 minute fix. Thank you once again for your expert advise...much appreciated.
What a great video. Worked like a charm. My local Ford service shop wanted $179 ($49 for a new assembly + $130 for installation) . I O U a beer. Thanks
Thanks. You saved me a trip to the dealer. One difference in my case was when I was twisting the lever trying to align the lands with the grooves, the exterior door kept swinging open. There was enough friction that the door wouldn't stay closed, so I used some duct tape to secure the door. The one thing I would add for the folks out in RUclipsland is to go underneath once a year and give it a tap so you can avoid having to do this again. If it backed out once, it's going to back out again. It's quite obvious this would be a non-issue if Ford would put a locking device on the lever the first place. Yet another example of corporate greed and some bean counter wanting to save half a cent per unit.
Perfect! Worked just as you said! The door part fell off and I thought I broke it but was able to line it back up in to position. Thanks for the great education.
Great information on the cause and repair. There's an aluminum replacement stem with a washer and cotter pin for $13 on Amazon to replace that plastic stem the spring connects to... permanent solution!
My man thank you for the video..this just happened to my 2018 and I almost bought the metal replacement piece from Amazon i saw in another video before seeing this video. You saved me $20 and a headache.
Thank you so much for this video. My 2015 F150 had this exact problem. I was able to repair it, although I struggled getting the spring back on as I am no longer a young man. Did get some vice grips on the spring in the correct orientation and was able to get more torque on the spring while it stayed in the correct alignment. Thanks again.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! I just fixed my brand new to me 2019 Ford F150 Lariat's fuel cover! I should have checked it at the dealer but I've never seen a vehicle with fuel cover issues! Thankfully a very easy fix, especially if you have long arms 😁
Thanks J Man! Yes, that spring is stronger than it looks and it's a small space to work in. I found lineman's pliers had deeper grooves to hold it more steady than did my needlenose or other pliers.
This is exactly what happened to my 2019 F-150 Now I know it doesn't need to be replaced. Although popping the spring back into place was definitely the hardest part of this issue which I ended up taking the part out of my truck to get the spring on.
Thank you for the video. I have not tried the fix yet, but from everything I've watched it appears that this is my issue. Dealer wants ~$150 to do the repair and they are out 10 weeks and it may have to go in and sit a few days. NOT! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for the video. I was about to bring my F150 2020 to a repair place. I fix it myself watching your video. Yes, the spring is hard but I was able to put it back without breaking anything 😅
Thanks. Worked like a charm (without taking off the assembly) from underneath the truck. Had found an earlier video with the 3 bolts you mentioned early on in the video and was stumped until I cam across yours.
Super duper, thank you just took me maybe 5 minutes total to do this...super easy fix...glad I did need to take the whole assembly out. Again, great job, bro.
Ford wanted $65 just to look at it, and I had to make an apptmnt a week away. I couldnt ride sround like that. once the male in was snapped inside the female in. had to get a phillip head and place it inside the spring "O" and pull that clamp back onto the plastic hook it goes around, once that clicked in everything worked like a charm. You saved me money, so all the ice water you can drink on me 😁.
Yes, it can be. I found that lineman's pliers (with deep grooves that held the spring) worked better than needlenose or other kinds. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the advice. Bought a used 2018 F150 for my son that had the same problem. Poor engineering design with that pivot arm popping out all the time. The difficult part is resetting the spring from underneath the truck. Took me several tries to finally get it seated.
The part you cut out…getting that GD clip back on is literally the hardest part. The pin the spring connects to is now broken. Trip to the dealer now. Now I know why you cut that part out. Thanks!
Just to add a comment here that I had this happen twice on my 12th gen F150. I took a small drill bit and drilled a hole straight down into the end of the shaft, then installed a small screw and a washer large enough to prevent the shaft from pulling back through. It hasn't happened again in years now.
I would like to know how you got that cap that goes over the gas hole that does not come off at all! How did you get that off to get the whole housing out cause I need to replace mine, I go through this about once a week it needs replaced but I can’t remove that piece
So glad I ran into this video 2019 f150 went under truck pushed back in then had to literally turn into the Hulk to get spring back around that plastic part. If it happens again I ordered a metal pin with cotter pin to hold it in to replace the plastic one.

You know what, Bob...I took your comment to heart. I agree...I didn't show one of the hardest parts of the repair--putting the spring on. To that end, I made a new video, and I also started another channel dedicated to my grilling and garage interests. I'm going to make a note and a link on this current video to that one, and also change references in other auto forums that have generated traffic to this channel. I appreciate the input. You'll find the new video here: ruclips.net/video/D3Rj1k1TU3s/видео.html
Wow thanks! I thought a car wash broke the fuel door on my work truck. Your video worked like a charm except for I had a hell of a time getting that spring back on. I ended up needing vice grips. Maybe I should have removed the assembly from the truck. Any way I can stop this from happening in the future?
I viewed this video and the updated version about reattaching the spring. You failed to mention, or realize, that once the post locks in place, they don’t all align exactly as the one shown. After 90 minutes manipulating the spring, which was now completely out of position to reattach, and even removing and attempting to find another seated position for it, the connection point for the opposite end of the spring broke completely away. Guess I’ll now be purchasing an entirely new setup.
Thank you! I fixed mine today after your video. I need to get that plastic bezel (ring) off where it encircles the filler neck. Mine is yellow on my 2015, showing flex fuel(e85 compatible) and that ring ia blocking my ability to put on a keyed filler neck "plug" (aka gas cap) from Ford. The yellow overhangs the front of the opening. Any ideas? Thanks, again!
There is a part to replace the shaft with a metal one that does have a retaining pin on the back side for a permanent fix. On Amazon. Great video though, most comprehensive I have seen.
@@christopherolsen5391 Okay, I figured it out and replaced it (fuel filler housing) myself. The the fuel filler housing actually stretches over the fuel hole entrance.
I have created a new channel, Grill and Garage, and the first video is a much better/faster version of this video, but also shows exactly how to reconnect the spring, based on the feedback people have given in the comments. That video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/D3Rj1k1TU3s/видео.html

I wanna shoot myself

Works great. Thanks
Thanks worked for my 2019
Great!
There is a part to replace the shaft with a metal one that does have a retaining pin on the back side for a permanent fix. On Amazon. Great video though, most comprehensive I have seen.
thanks! just fixed mine
Great! I hope it went well and fast!
Excellent, but reinstalling the spring is very difficult with the narrow space I have
How did you reattach the spring while up in there. I’m have trouble with it. It’s a very strong spring.
How did you get the spring attached back to the tab?
Able to fix without taking it off. Thank you!!!
Good tutorial but, you should've explained how you removed the gas filler housing. Did you remove the easy filler cap or what?
This... He did all the work. I actually want to replace the whole assembly, but it doesn't come with the easy fill cover. I don't want to damage that.
@@christopherolsen5391 Okay, I figured it out and replaced it (fuel filler housing) myself. The the fuel filler housing actually stretches over the fuel hole entrance.
Lol thanks for the info but cutting away before reinstalling the spring is hilarious. Getting that spring back on from under the truck is really hard
