My pain is your gain! Luckily this particular injury happened years ago, so I don't really remember too much about the pain.
In Sports Medicine we treat all kinds of musculoskeletal injuries, which includes injuries to the fingers! I was lucky enough to get a mallet finger before ever knowing what it was. Let me know if you have any questions!
After receiving the same injury, dr sent me to a hand specialist. Needless to say I’ve had a perfect finger for the past 30 yrs. You folks do great work. 👏😄
In how much time you go for doctor after injury
Glad it didn't take too long to get the right version uploaded! Seeing the behind-the-scenes is a nice reminder of how much work goes into each video. :)
🤦🏻♀️ haha thanks for coming back to watch the real one!
⬆️ too true!
Ligaments, man, they're so important. My mom once tore them in her foot and once in her knee (got smacked into the wall by someone in the skating rink while taking me out for some fun when I was a kid). She says tearing ligaments hurt worse than breaking an arm or leg. She healed up fine!
I have it from a car accident no one listened to me about my pinkie finger hurting. After 3 years of complaining and a swollen knuckle I was sent to a specialist who offered to fuse my joint. Which seems even worse. Mine is on my dominant hand and it really effects my handwriting and my grip. My knuckle stays swollen and painful. For a tiny injury it really sucks.
Thanks a lot Doc!
As a bike instructor, this'll make for interesting management (right index finger)!
👍🏼
How many degrees of extensor lag do you have? That doesn't seem like it looks that bad compared to others with no treatment.
I had a surgery for mine. Middle finger and I just removed the pin a couple days ago. It hurts like hell trying to flex it. I hope I’ll be able to make a full recovery. Thanks for sharing your story.
how was the surgery
It was an experience. I can’t move my finger as yet and it’s a bit comminuted, so it seems when I try to move it I can feel some fragment of bone still moving.
@@jenoyestewart1516 how long has it been since also do you have a cast
@Tarantula burke i didn’t have a cast, just bandage. It still is in bandage now just to cover the site where the pin was removed from n the hide the hideousness of my nail which is falling out.
@@crflmntcr i didn’t have a cast, just bandage. It still is in bandage now just to cover the site where the pin was removed from n the hide the hideousness of my nail which is falling out. Since the pin was removed, it’s now about the third week since pin removal.
I always love your videos! Educational and actually learn something interesting each time! Plus they’re always funny / entertaining! “They’re sisters not twins” such a great description!😂😂
I had to learn that the hard way about eyebrows in high school 😭
What if you try to splint an old mallet finger injury for 6-8 weeks. If it’s been years. Would it improve at all or it’s too late?
How do you know its actually good to go? Like what if its not healed after 6 weeks and it goes limp again id lose my mind
I actually love your channel so much!
Thank you 🥺 that means a lot
@@DoctorCrystalMDI was splinted for 12 weeks then splint went off and didnt need to wear it again. After splint was off for 2-3 days i began to know that the finger was droopy. The therapist checked out my mallet finger and tells me i have a 8 degree lag but then says my tendon is healed enough to begin finger exercises. He says my finger in the joint is stiff because of splinting in that position for very long time. But my finger when coming out of the splint was completely straight. But when i try to straighten it i am unable to straighten the fingertip does this mean my finger didnt healed properly? Or is it due to stiffness of DIPJ thst is preventing me from straightening it??? He also says dont be afraid to move and try best to bend or get it in a fist and that my bones will break first before my tendon will. 😂 Im just worried i dint have active extension on the tip of my index finger.
I got mallet finger a week ago, and started wearing a splint. Three days into it, it slipped off my hand while I slept and when I woke up I was so sad. I am now wearing a sock over the hand secured by my watch. It is weird, but it seems to be working.
hmmmm... so I have got my first mallet finger and the compliance of 24/7 splint is impossible! So I am considering just accepting the injury. Yours appears to have healed fine.... so are there any issues with just ignoring it and getting on with life with a slightly bent finger?
How did it turn out?
@@2342bigman it’s still bent, but no other issues and hasn’t stopped me doing anything
I experienced a mallet finger around Easter. It’s my middle finger on my right hand 😏. I did a lot of research and tried to find a therapist that would make me a custom splint in my area, but no such luck. I tried to use the padded aluminum splint the hand specialist gave me, but it was difficult to tape it on by myself and nearly Impossible to remove the cloth tape by myself without bending my finger. I used epoxy to glue Velcro strips on the aluminum padded strip; however, after two weeks, I got up at night to find it had fallen off. So, I started my count over. I eventually got a stacked splint online (one of many different kinds that I had purchased and tried)! After a total count of 10 weeks, I went back to my hand specialist and he removed the splint. My finger drooped but not 90 degrees like it did after my fall. My doctor told me “good luck” and if it starts to droop more to go back.
I had done a lot of research online and came across videos by Michelle, a hand specialist. She advised that in most cases it is very important to take it slow and not to remove the splint and go your merry way like it never happened. (My mallet finger did not involve any broken bones, it just came disconnected from the bone, a tendinous mallet, which I understand takes longer to heal). I followed her recommendations and continued to wear the splint while starting the first week of exercises, which involved removing the splint 3-4 times a day and gently bending my fingers down. At the end of 5 days it started drooping more! Ugh! I found a therapist that made a custom splint, which is much more comfortable and made out of cast material. I still remove it daily to clean and allow air to my finger but I do not let it bend one little bit! The hand specialist recommended that I leave it on at least 6 more weeks. To play it safe, I decided to go for 8 weeks as they originally recommend for this type of mallet finger where the bone is not broke. I have 6 weeks to go! I surely wish I would have gotten the custom splint right at the start! Hoping for the best outcome!
Had a basketball injury 3 weeks ago, x-rayed, small fracture on the base of the phalange on my 4th finger (the one next to the pinky). Doctor put it in a splint, but a standard one, not elevated and told me to take it off after 2 weeks and go to physical therapy. I'm doing the exercises, have aaaalmost full range of motion and almost no pain, but I've got a mallet finger (around 30 degrees downward). Still iceing the finger and massaging it too like the doctor said. Do you think there's a chance that it will:
1. heal like it was over time and exercise
2. if not is it to late to get a splint and put it so that the tip of the finger is elevated
3. or that's how it is, just got to deal with it?
Thanks in advance...
Hey same had a basketball injury 4th finger. Splinting.. doctor told me not to take it off 6-8 weeks. It was bruised but its not anymore. I have been icing it to treat the swelling, it’s painful when i touch the top area but its not that painful comparing to 14 years ago i injured the same finger. My finger was already broken to begin with. Fracture. Mallet finger but it was healed before function just fine until i injured again this time two weeks ago. I want to be able to do other sports using my hands not that finger, as i have no problem moving my fingers and still have strength in my hands. The doctor is very strict about it he told me no impact activity to that hand i think he’s exaggerating tbh..
I had that too! Volleyball, first PE class in high school. Actually my ring finger was swollen and that’s why my mom took me to a doctor - and to our surprise the doctor said nothing was wrong with the ring finger, but my pinky needed to be in a splint for 2 months. And I actually wore it the whole time, no break. The splint was kind of gross, this metal with sponge - how can you have a sponge on your body for 2 months?!
It isn’t perfect, I see that it’s a little droopier than my other pinky, but it definitely isn’t bad and hey, it’s a pinky finger, it’s not like it’s important
It IS important!!!! What if you play the guitar or the piano??? I play both and have been incorrectly splinted for 10 weeks, so I'm starting from scratch. This lady acts like it's a nothing little cool injury, but I disagree. It's very delicate ad needs to be taken seriously. My mallet finger became deformed into a swan neck because I was improperly splinted. If her tear had been worse, she would have been running to the doctor ASAP. A mallet finger injury is no laughing matter.
@@ahofer1623 did your pinky get better now ?
Hello Dr. Crystal I’ve lived with a mallet finger for over a decade now. Tried therapy to get some of the lifting motion to improve but nothing. I play the Piano and recently picked up the Accordion. I also got referred to a specialist in Hand surgery. Dr. I would like your advice seeing if corrective surgery is a good idea for the Stability and function aspect. I really like playing music and i never plan on putting it aside
Is possible that after 7 weeks my finger have a little drop like few degrees nothing too much? And muscles will strengthen itself to be able to extend finger all the way up? If I go to sleep with splint on and when I wake up my finger is pretty much straight and after a whole day finger starts to drop. My finger is still a little bit swollen and I have physiotherapy every other day.
hi i have a similar injury like you do...like exactly does it crack in the joints?
when you maybe try to massage it or twist it mine does all these cracking noises and like you i never did have fixed or put a splint on it so guess we stuck with them like this lol
19 years ago, I suffered from a right pinky pain due to a 🏀 accident I had at my school gym. I wasn't paying attention to the 🏀. So I slipped on the 🏀 with my right pinky. Now in 2024, the pain remains off-and-on. It comes and goes.
I just got a mallet little finger at gymnastics tonight. Not even doing the gymnastics but by supporting a friend. My finger got caught in her trousers and pinged. 🙁it doesn’t hurt but its swan necked droopy. Is this likely a tendon mallet? Do boney mallets hurt more?
This video was very informative, thank you so much!
What is your best advise for keeping the splint on but still washing dishes, hair, etc?
I am not a specialist, just a guy improvising here. When showering or doing dishes, I put on a latex glove, large size, sealed at the base with elastics. Then, when I need to wash my hand, I remove aluminum splint with the help of a butter knife (very carefully), then leave my hand flat on a surface, wash it, dry it, then put it in a clan splint. I have at least 2 splints to wash and put a clean one each day. It has been 5 days…. I hope it will heal ok. Fingers crossed 🤞 😂
I wear a rubber glove when showering or washing dishes.
This literally just happened to me a week ago so thanks for the knowledge! Just got my splint and it’s very irritating to keep on !
MrBlake, just want to know if your finger is back to normal after the splint. I've had a splint on for 7 long weeks and hopefully the outcome will be positive
Yes ma’am my finger id back to normal. I still have some soreness sometimes but overall good shape.
I am so happy for you.
I currently have this. It was bony mallet fracture. 6 weeks in splint. 2 weeks of n nocturnal splint. Still pains a bit, but it's much better. Wish the pain would go away soon
Update ?
I have a CVS Splint. I have an appointment with an orthopedic Dr. How can we keep a splint in for 8 weeks? How can we wash? Do we use a plastic bag. I’m pretty sure the doc will have to check it. Will they have to see it drop? Or will they work off my X-rays? Thank you.
Has it been 8 weeks? Did your finger go back to normal? I had a splint on for 5 long weeks already. Hopefully my finger will heal properly after all the effort.
My splint has a sponge material inside. I wash my hand gently with the splint on. I use paper towels to wick most of the moisture out.
@@DD-id1mf Everyone heals differently. I still have lots post traumatic inflammation that fluctuates. The finger is not fully functional, but it keeps getting better.
I too have inflammation over the weekend. It was very itchy so I removed the splint to investigate. My pinky was red, swollen, and sensitive to the touch. The redness and swelling has come down quite a bit. I am in the process of seeking professional help.
Hey Doc
I just got one on my Ring finger. I am waiting for a Mallet Splint I ordered but have a split right now from the ER. I believe it is just Tendon and will heal normally. When it happened I didn’t even feel it but that last 24-48 hours I was in some strong pain. I guess what I’m asking is I do not feel it is appropriate to see a specialist. I did my research on here with several Dr Videos. I will just keep it splinted and maybe Take it off one more time when the Mallet splint comes. What is your opinion on “ Mallet Splints” TIA
Ok...so I just injured my pinky. The tip is bend down just shy of 90 degrees. Only way I can straighten it is manually with my other hand. Once I let go...it bends again. Mild discomfort. Sort of hurts if I hit it against something on accident. Think a splint (consistent) will likely fix it? I just hate to rack up medical bills. I have high deductible insurance because I practically never need to see a doctor. I recognize there's no way you can be certain without seeing it...but I'd appreciate your opinion.
Get a stax splint and wear it non stop for 6-10 weeks. I’m on week 3. At first it’s a pain but trust me, you’ll get used to it. Just be sure that when u wash your finger that it doesn’t drop otherwise you’ll have to restart. You can also buy some rubber finger guards on Amazon so you can shower without disturbing the stax splint. Hope this works out for you.
@@DavidRodriguez-hd3wt Yes, thanks! I actually decided to see an orthopedic doctor. I'm wearing a something similar to a stax. You described the process perfectly. I cannot let it bend even once for 6 weeks and then I go back to the doctor. I cut the finger off a plastic glove and cover it in the shower. Yes, it's a real pain especially considering I use a computer for my job. But, I'll get acclimated. It's been 5 days. Thanks for your help!
@@tysonhawk5437 amazing how such a small injury messes up so much. Btw I got these on Amazon for under $5. Acu-Life Finger and Toes Cots. I was cutting off fingers from rubber gloves but I was still getting water on the splint. Good luck with your recovery!!!
@@DavidRodriguez-hd3wt Sure does. Good to know... I may purchase those. It would simplify things when I shower, etc. Good luck to you too!
Hi Dr Crystal. I had my injury on november 11th of 2022. On december 9th went to hand doc and he told me it was not fracture. is it to late for me to splint because he never gave me that choice thanks doc.
i messed up my pink doing Traditional BJJ with a Gi. It didnt get jammed but the opposite. I feel like I held onto my friends gi very tight and it was yanked very hard. Then the last knucle on my pinky is swollen and wont straighten all the way and I feel like its weaker when i try to press on my finger tips. I play guitar and this is my fingering hand and so its very alarming. Can someone please tell me what to do to fix it?
My mallet finger has a little red on it after many years. I don’t have pain I can flex but like you mentioned every once in a while it hurts. Is it okay to manage with it for the rest of my life or should I do surgery or re break it?
I think I got it like the way you have it, mine is bit more bent I put that cover on top n it’s my second day, but it’s really hurting! The pain goes away and comes back how long should I keep the cover on it
I have mallet finger and it didnt heal properly and they wont do surgery on it any suggestions? I also wore a splint for 8 weeks still didnt heal...
Wait what of i was born with boney mallet fingers is their a way to make your fingers straight with out surgery?
currently 7 weeks in to my torn extensor tendon injury and I can say with certainty it is not awesome lol
I have it in my ring finger right now. Went 8 days keeping it straight then my splint came off when i was sleeping and had to start over. Doesnt hurt terrible bad but man it is annoying and stressfull. Im worried after like 4 or 5 weeks ill mess up again
Great video, expressed clearly. I just snapped my extensor tendon on my middle finger on left hand by pulling my pants off! I am travelling and I can’t find any specialist around. I’ll use a splint until I travel back home in 10 days and find a doctor to hopefully assist. I’m being careful when swapping splints to wash hand, using a knife to keep flat and slide off.
I tried exactly The same thing about 6 weeks ago. Same finger and same action!
I’m 10 weeks into a Mallet finger. Splint off for a week now. How long before your finger wasn’t swelled and painful?
what is the best mallet finger splint for work that doesnt fall off
Hi Doc Crystal. So for me, it was too late as I did not splint properly and happened 3 months ago so now my pinky finger cannot flex and extend properly!
What can I do now?😢
What did you do when you weren’t splinting properly
Took 5 years to realise why my pull ups always felt odd and of ten wonderd why the f I never felt satisfied or why I wasn’t able to get a full flexed biceps even after getting a massive pump. Also I noticed a lot of following MMT issues like side following a bunch of other issues like elbow flexion and shoulder external and internal rotation along with scapular elevation and abduction and the list goes on….
Is it possible to cure this after a year......????
Tomorrow I'm getting a single pin surgically put in my right ring finger because I know I will mess up with a splint.
A small bone chunk broke off with the tendon.
I'm super worried about the general anesthesia 😳
Update
I was born with mallet fingers will this treatment still work?
Thank you, thank you!
I jammed my finger a month a ago and just starting to wear a splint today , so i have to wait for 8 more weeks because my body heals slower than normal
Is there any surgery in mallet finger😭😟....?

God pls reply...m very tensed ... Its drooping not like before but a little... has it not healed yet or it will take some time to get fully straighten
I am not a doctor. I read that you need to have a splint on full time 24/7 for at least 6 weeks for the tendon to heal properly. I hope your finger is normal by now. Cheer!

@@rajmishra7870Awesome news! You only splinted it for 3 weeks? I am in the same boat. Kept it splinted for 3 weeks but it is still slightly bent. Not even a month passed since I removed the splint. Do you think my finger will heal after some time?
@@marijajovanovic3269 my finger too was a little bent, a little only... It will be straight in some days and yes it won't be exactly same as the other hand's finger... It would just be gently straight giving a stright shape. I hope you understand what I mean
