    At one point you had a double!! (The mullet and yourself hooked at the same time 😁) Wait for the tap tap tap then set the hook! Sounds easy enough to me. LOL, You sure impress your wife in strange ways!! 😂🤣😂

      Haha, Dave! I don't know what she sees in me, but as long as she keeps seeing it, then 👍. The sand fleas were a fan favorite for all, especially the kids when they found an area that had thousands of them. As always, thanks for stopping by and supporting our channel, we really appreciate it!😊

      Thank you! We live outside of Philly, but try and go to the Outer Banks of North Carolina as much as possible! It's absolutely beautiful, but I'm still jealous of you and the countless amazing places you have to fish North of us!!!

    Man they were so excited once they started to see all those sand fleas. I could see some too. Never caught any before and didn't know you could fish with that. Almost look like small beetles. Nice hook set up. Definitely effective.

      Thanks for stopping over, Titus! Yes, I can see why you'd say they look like small beetles. Kind of creepy to have a couple dozen of them scurrying around in your hand, too! I've had the most luck catching whiting, pompano, red drum, and flounder with them. They DEFINITELY work and they're free!

      Thanks Dana! This was the first time I’ve used lighter action poles in the surf and it made all the difference. I can’t wait to get a big bluefish or drum on one of these days! I’ve been going to the Outer Banks since I was a kid and it was definitely nice to get away for a little while.

    I used to use sand fleas to catch whiting too when I lived in Jacksonville, Fl many years ago. That was a cute little red drum you caught. I guess it makes sense they'd eat the sand fleas too. I know they will eat crabs. I've seen people use them before.

    Sand fleas definitely work but they aren't always that easy to find. Fresh shrimp is probably my favorite bait to use in the surf and one that I've had a ton of sucess with. It doesn't stay on the hook quite as good as sand fleas but it's relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and just about everything eats it.

    • @fatherandsonsfishing
      @fatherandsonsfishing  Год назад

      I agree about shrimp. My big problem is trying to make it stay on the hook and I just haven't found anything that works consistently for me.

    • @fatherandsonsfishing
      @fatherandsonsfishing  3 года назад +1

      Sure, no problem! One thing, though, for fishing like I was doing you don’t want to cast far out. Just a few feet off shore does the trick. Plenty of whiting, puppy drum, and even trout hang out in that zone.

    • @chrisf8855
      @chrisf8855 3 года назад

      @@fatherandsonsfishing Oh, I see. That makes sense. But if you decide to catch Moby Dick you'll need to cast out farther.

    • @johnnorris1227
      @johnnorris1227 2 года назад

      Not true at all you need to read the beach and the surf and that will tell you where you wanna cast. Fish almost always relate to structure and in the surf that structure comes in the form of bottom contours. Fish generally feed in troughs which is a deeper area of water between the beach and a sandbar or between two sandbars that runs parallel to beach or cuts which is a deeper area of water between two points that runs perpendicular to the beach and connects 2 troughs so that's what you wanna look for and make you cast so your rig or lure lands in those areas. In alot of cases there will be a quick drop off which forms a trough just off the beach and there will be a sandbar just a little further out in that trough is generally a really good place to try because fish will cruise in that deeper water lane and pick off food that gets washed in off the sandbar or washed out from the beach.

      End of April into May is more consistent, but even in early April there should be fish to be caught! If you have some flexibility, the further south you fish the better if you are surf fishing. Good luck!

    What size strength rod are you using im going to obx next month and want to fish exact way and want to bring the best gear what do you recommend. Also like to catch something from soundside.

    • @fatherandsonsfishing
      @fatherandsonsfishing  3 года назад

      This is a 6'6" medium action, 2-piece Ugly Stik, nothing fancy. You could also go lighter action too. That rod will work just fine in the sound too. Lots of fish being caught from what I'm seeing on different posts. Good luck to you!

    Dude! Awesome video. Im going to OBX in a bit and Im getting all geared up. Im going to show this video to my family im trying to convince to fish with me.
    I heard you say what material your leader was out of. But what is your rod length and reel size? Also looks like you had some braid on the reel? (im very new so trying to be ready for any scenario) Thanks in advance!

      Thanks for watching!
      This was a 6'6" medium action rod (you do not need or necessarily want a really big surf fishing rod for this type of fishing), and I believe it was a 4000 series reel although something smaller would also be fine. The line was all braid except for the high/low rig that I just tied onto the braid with a snap swivel. Braid is helpful because it helps you get a better feel for what is going on. There is a lot of movement due to the waves and the current and braid will help you better tell the difference between natural movement and a fish. Good luck!

      @@fatherandsonsfishing Thanks for the awesome advice!! I have a 6'6", 7', and 8' in case its heavy waves. I plan to have a local bait ship wind some braid on my reels. Now to make some high low rigs.. cheers! :)

    What combo is that? Penn Fierce? I’m needing a combo for my next trip. What do you recommend ?

    • @fatherandsonsfishing
      @fatherandsonsfishing  3 года назад

      Good eye, Jeff. You are correct about the Penn Fierce. I believe it’s a 4000 although a 2500 would work too. The pole is a 6’6” Ugly Stick, medium action. With this type of fishing, especially if the water is calm, I’d go as light as possible. Really helps you feel the difference between the waves and a bite. Good luck!

    Catching the sand fleas is almost as fun as catching the fish. Did you find any softshell ones?

      Totally agree, Adam! Yes, there were a few soft shells in the mix. Thanks for stopping by!

      Great! I can't remember if this was filmed at the end of July or early August, but this type of fishing works great in the summer months.

    Using pretty light tackle for fishing the surf! Great video! Would love if you checked us out and subbed! Sand fleas are the best and tight lines
