I love Tesseract. It feels like they write music with an artistic purpose. The music is not only atmospheric and groovy, but also exciting because of the unconventional and yet nuanced musical tools they use. "One" is the heaviest tone-wise, a really amazing debut album. "Altered State" is probably the most technically ambitious,."Polaris" is the lightest and grooviest, and "Sonder" probably the most story-driven. Great reaction videos!
"Of Matter" is from TesseracT's second album, "Altered State". They had a different singer on that one, Ashe O'Hara, who's now with Voices From The Fuselage. The singer on the first, third and fourth album is Daniel Tompkins.
I liked Ashe, but I feel like his voice works SO much better with his other projects. Daniel and Alec ARE Tesseract as far as I'm concerned. Drums and bass can come and go and it wouldn't change the overall feel of the band. Change the vocalist or lead guitarist and you'll have a totally different band.
Its funny how the song kinda messed up in the video then the singer says "somethings not right". Tesseract is so good man. They did a live lockdown performance where all the musicans recorded their own parts seperately and combined them in one video. I highly suggest it. Will you be checking out Frost/Hail from Uneven Structure for this revisiting week? :)
I recommend checking out something from their newest album "Sonder". "Juno", "Smile", and "Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image" are all fantastic, but you can't really go wrong with anything off of that album :)

Discovered this band last year and they quickly became my favourite. Everything they've done is absolutely amazing. From the harsher earlier album to the softer Polaris and especially Altered State which completely changed they way percieve rhythms.
Altered State definitely made me understand the way rhythm is perceived and has given me a totally new outlook on how I make my music. Honestly AS is my fav album

I just recently went through Tesseract's and Periphery's discography. Enjoyed both bands, though I give Tesseract the edge as I like how they're able to do this djent/math-metal hybrid sound, genres that are generally considered technical and unemotional, and find a way to inject real emotion into it. Really enjoy the funky rhythms on this one.
I genuinely hate when people compare tesseract with periphery, i get that periphery's music is kinda good (I just like the instrumentals of their music) but like TesseracT's music is waaayyy freaking better regarding the mixing, screaming, and singing plus the lyrics and over all performance imo.
I didn't know that people would compare the two. I enjoy both bands a great deal but I don't really see any similarities outside of both technically belonging to the same genre. Both bands have very different sounds and feels to me and I would never think to sort them together though.
@@CriticalReactions I have a habit of exploring genres by just throwing the discographies of the "major bands" on a playlist and going through them at work, so comparisons are inevitable (for me) just because I'm listening to them back-to-back. Right now I'm going through some early prog I haven't heard--Van Der Graaf Generator, Moody Blues, Camel, Caravan--and these bands sound absolutely nothing alike either despite all being the "same genre."
All three singers they have had are great singers. I do think I like Daniel the best. They are also great live. Been a couple years since I have seen them, hopefully will get to again.
Great reaction. Anthony Kiedis is the vocalist for RHCP, and the comparison is spot on. Dan has a diverse vocal skillset that fits well with Tesseract.

Well, this made me finally check out this album and... whoa. Very beautiful stuff! I know this singer from Skyharbor - somewhat similar mood/feel, but very different (also very cool).
The ending is just a rehash of the first pre-verse section, the second pre verse is different so i guess it's natural not to remember on first listen but the end gets tied in early on
at this point I'm finding more bands than you're checking out that I may have requested 😂😂 killer, can't wait for what comes next \m/ 6:14 I wasn't expecting red hot chili peppers either , also sounds alot like rage against the machine lol
There's no clean break between rock and metal. Metal is usually just rock with more distortion, speed and complexity, but what is/isn't metal has also changed over time as the genre's evolved. I dig what you say about enjoying tech/prog-lite. I also love extreme prog/tech stuff, but sometimes your brain does need a break and stuff like this is a good middle ground of interesting musicality (not intellectually boring) without being too demanding. That's also why I love the neo-classic prog bands like Transatlantic, Flower Kings, and Big Big Train as they hearken back to when classic prog was complex but also accessible. I'd highly recommend Transatlantic's My New World, Flower Kings's There Is More to This World, and Big Big Train's Judas Unrepentant for a good sampling.
Personally I think 'Altered State' (where Of Matter comes off of) is the perfect album to listen to (& just in general lol), everything from composition to Mixing/Mastering is 100% spot-on front to back (plus you get a sick Sax Solo provided by Chris Barretto from Monuments/Ever Forthright). They haven't had quite the same tone since then & it's kinda been of a let down imo cause that album set the bar so high for me haha. TesseracT has gone through some slight style changes throughout the years depending on which vocalist they had, each bringing their own flavor. -Earlier mid-00's Demo era TesseracT has a bit more of a Metalcore/Meshuggah edge to it & more prominent harsher vocals from their first 2 vocalists Julien Perier & Abisola Obasanya. -Daniel Tompkins was their vocalist during their first "professional" releases 'Concealing Fate'/'One' (still keeping the harsh vocals), then briefly left the band (joining the bands White Moth Black Butterfly/In Colour/Skyharbor). -Elliot Coleman joined in for 'Perspective,' an EP of (mostly) acoustic renditions of earlier songs, then he booked it shortly after the EP's release (& went on to join the band Good Tiger). -Ashe O'Hara took over for the 'Altered State' era, keeping the sans-harsh vocal approach from the previous release & left after touring that album (later joining the band Voices From The Fuselage) -Afterwards Daniel Tompkins rejoined the band for 'Polaris' & has been their main vocalist pushing their sound since.
I guess "Polaris" is the best one to start with, but for the variety I recommend "One", especially "Concealing Fate" which is a close to half an hour listen split into 6 parts which you do not wish to listen to separately (vocals consist of more screams). I also recommend singer's side project "White Moth Black Butterfly" (not metal at all, just prog-pop, I'd say) as well as the band "Skyharbor" where Dan used to sing, esp. song "Guiding Lights" or beautiful ballad "Patience". He does solo stuff worth checking too!
For some interesting and fun metalcore I'd suggest Oceans Ate Alaska, either Escapist or Hansha, the drummer is literally one of the best in scene it's insane

Like ‘Of matter’ is actually three tracks. Btw the album which ‘Of matter’ is on ‘Altered state’, is my personal favourite of theirs. One of my favourite albums of all time. It’s also the only album to feature Ashe O’hara on vocals.
You should check out Celldweller, it might be not that complex musically, but he has some pretty fun songs. I would reccommend you Own Little World or Birthright.

i get why you would think the flowing part at the end reminds you of RHCP... but honestly RHCP doesnt have half the talent of TesseracT. Keidis sucks, and an amateur compared to any of TesseracT's singers, especially Dan Tompkins.
