Hyde (Hideto Takarai) became famous and sold the most records as a member of the bands "L'Arc-en-Ciel" and "Vamps". Young Hyde was probably the most beautiful human being at the time and his sexless beauty is unreal. Despite that, he always remained a humble man with a creative mind. Watch a short report: I Spent a Week with Japan's Biggest Rock Star: Hyde ruclips.net/video/HEaaln5jDl8/видео.html.
The best-selling Japanese music artists are the hard-rock band "B'z" with about 83 million in Japan and over 100 million in total. I recommend live performance: Wandering blue bullet (RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL 2017) ruclips.net/video/JNmemsVToL0/видео.html

The next should be After Light or Fake Divine. Hyde's is another whole package. He is a legend in Japan and has huge fan base from worldwide. He does solo projects but don't miss L'arc~en~Ciel and Vamps too.

I started listening to him about 2002 with his old band (and extremely famous) L'arc~en~Ciel (Driver's High, Stay Away, Neo Universe.) (The band started in 1991.) X-Japan, Luna Sea and L'arc~en~Ciel, Penicillin, Glay were pretty much the first VK bands. Then Dir en Grey started. They started the path of VK today (and Jrock...).
I worked at a record distributor in Montreal and had them order Jrock albums (mostly European releases at the time) and they had the albums listed in their directory for stores to order. I believe, stores did order the L'arc~en~Ciel album smile... not many though and the people I worked with though my music taste was bad... The GazettE, Dir en Grey, Gackt, D'espairsRay.
    Bands I recommend to you:
    The GazettE
    Exist Trace
    Miyavi
    hide
Kagrra, (not the same style, rock and Japanese music mix. I love it.)
    Pierrot

HYDE is also the lead vocalist for the bands L’Arc~en~Ciel and VAMPS. He’s basically the David Bowie of Japan - just with the way his music and his appearance has evolved over the years. Check out VAMPS’ “BEAST” album and HYDE’s “666” album. ;)

Hyde is one of the important Japanese artists.
He has a 30 year career with his band L'Arc en Ciel and a 20 year solo career as well as having another band called Vamps.
He is a very versatile artist since he handles many musical styles in his different projects, I think it would be interesting for you to react to each one of them.
I will leave you some recommendations:
    L'Arc-en-Ciel - Ibara no Namida

    Vamps - REPLAY

    HYDE - NOSTALGIC

I’ve been listening to Hyde, through L’arc-en-Ciel or his solo career, for almost 20 years. Even though I don’t like the direction his music has gone, I respect the guy for being such a huge star after more than 2 decades in the business. If you want to hear some good rock songs from him, give his album Faith a try.

see, i like his new direction and in turn, I have appreciated what led him here. He has put himself all over the map for this exact reason. Instead of one of us in this comment section, we are both here. Smart man if you ask me.

L'Arc〜en〜Ciel has been huge in Japanese Rock scene and they had concert in MSG long time ago. Hyde doesn't look like 50 something years old does he. Although the band I recommend is not hard rock or metal but pop rock and any western reactor doesn't react to them, I want you to check out Monkey Majik. My favorite song is Fly, Change and so on although their biggest hits was Around the World and Sora wa marude. If you prefer more Metal side, Vow Wow and Loudness are bands that are same generation with Show-Ya. Vow Wow mainly targeted British market and Loudness targeted US market.
I'm a Madiac and also likes lovebites but only because western reactors don't react too often, it doesn't mean bands are not huge in Japan. I hope you keep finding hidden gem not many Westerners know.

Monkey Majik is a name I have not heard yet, added to the list. Will check them out. Ah I know Loudness! Have seen them a few times in my life, fun live band.

Oh, Hyde. I actually grew up with L'arc~en~Ciel music. So nostalgic. They wasn't really old school band in my teens, but now they definitely are. This is quite strange to see him now with all this western-style music. I'd say more classic j-rock suites him more, but this is just my opinion. You could try some of L'arc~en~Ciel live performance to compare him with nowadays.
Have you ever heard of Dir en grey? They evolved through the bunch of genres trough more than 2 decades but they are definitely metal band. Every each member of the band is just brilliant, but their vocalist Kyo is something else.
Here is my personal starter pack for Dir en Grey, but after first reaction to them you'll receive a lot of suggestions. And they are definitely live band.
