Today didn't go exactly to plan.
The other night in Braga we were approached by a couple of university age girls, very similar scenario to the start of this video, they gave us a big talk about how they were raising money for a children's cancer foundation by selling these discount books.
We thought nothing of it and actually thought they were doing something incredible because, who lies about children with cancer right?
After bringing this up with a new friend we made in Bandung, he told us with absolute certainty that this was a scam and the books don't actually get you anything, they're all fake.
This has not put a dampener on our trip, we love Indonesia, we love the people and the incredible culture that this country has, it has just reminded us to be more aware.
In lighter news, Paris Van Java mall was actually incredible, the rooftop is definitely worth checking out and if you're any decent at ice skating, check out the rooftop ice skating ring!

Never give charity on the streets, malls, parks, or anywhere where they just come to you. Anywhere in the world, not just in Indonesia. Besides, any transactions in the mall without the permission from the mall management is illegal. If you wanna give charity or donation, take your time checking their websites ( it's your money, it's your call ) and most of them don't even have a legit establishment citing "we're just a small organization".

I've seen them for several times, and asking me "are you locals" or "can I have talk for minute" just like in the videos.
They are not just in Bandung, but at several most visited city by tourists like Bali, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta.
In public area, most of them are oftenly "stay" at Railway Stations, based on my experience.
As a local, I'm really sorry with what happened to both of you, next time if you meet them at Mall/Airport/Railway Station, avoid them & report it to security officers 🙏

Hopefully the police can shut down the whole operation! It is truely disgusting to use children with cancer or children in general as a reason and to say this is going to a charity to support them.
Becareful when someone approaching you and force you to buy something, most of them sell books or a coffee drink. If they come to you and offering something, dont take it just leave. Im kind of people who can’t refuse something when it comes to goodness, but most of them are fraudsters and the methods they use are always the same. It also happened to me 2x 😂

If you were asked for money, what ever the reason is, just leave and say sorry no thanks, or sorry i'm busy and walk fast.
We usually do, when they mentioned children with cancer charity and they were well dressed etc, we thought it was legitimate 😭

We got caught with it a few times, a total of Rp.300.000 😬 at least we know for next time!

Scammers who ask people to buy their books for charity are common in Jakarta as well, the words from her phone is exactly same. If this is true for charity, we should be free to give however much we truly want without having to worry about exceeding to a fixed amount. I usually ignore them because I know the donations do not go to the organization but instead go into their pockets. Additionally, they can be impolite sometimes by cursing at us if we don't give to them with reason why we are able to shop at supermarkets but can't donate to charity.

I have similar experience in one of the mall in Jkt today. A young girl approach me and said that she’s from one of the uni asked if she can give a small presentation bla bla bla. It’s a lie. I gave her 20 k and refused to buy the bag for the charity for 100 k. It’s concerning.

It is a scam unfortunately, the cancer foundation does not exist! The voucher books they sell, also do not work. Apparently a well known scam 😭 we will be more careful next time 😬
@EmmieandPaul I want to add as an indonesian that these things have been popping up lately in universities and other places. There's a guy who went viral for exposing these "charities" a couple weeks ago. It's a shame that you have to experience that, its best to just say no to these things if they sound sketchy about their details, the "we're not good at english" thing is such an easy cop out for them, that obviously can't work on locals.

Not only in Indonesia there are this motive to scam people as long as it doesnt contain threats or force you. Like my experiences and friends in several countries like China and India on some areas (not every areas), even we said sorry I'm not interested or politely refused they still pushed and forced us, even pulled arms to make listento their explanation untill I said firmly "Please leave us"

@@tmsgaming3986 vouhernya kayaknya bener, tapi masalahnya yg masuk ke donasi itu jumlahnya kecil banget. Misal harga 100rb, yg untuk donasi cuma 10rb atau bahkan 5rb. Dan “sales”nya tidak pernah menyebutkan itu. Satu lagi, kalau di mall itu biasanya mereka gak punya izin, jadi main kucing2an dengan petugas/manajemen mal
yg lucunya lagi dulu kan saya pernah caritau gitu di internet. ada yg ngespill tentang pekerjaan itu di blog gitu. kayak proses rekrutmennya aneh, dsb. awal2nya komentarnya pada setuju dengan penulisnya. eh tiba2 di belakang banyak komentar yg membela si ‘perusahaan’nya, dan jarak antar komennya deket2an. keliatan banget itu buzzernya si perusahaan
