Around 1986, as a teenager, I wrote a letter to Monogram expressing my love for their Nascar/stock car kits. I mentioned I would love to see an IROC series kit and a late model stock car type kit. I received a letter back from them thanking me for my letter and love for their stock car kits. They said their project schedule at the time was full for approximately two years. I don’t know what affiliation (if any) they had with Revell at the time, but much to my delight, these ASA kits showed up a few years later. I always felt like I had something to do with it.
You Probably had a part in it. At that time. The kit manufacturers were listening to the builders. Scale Auto Enthusiasts magazine was always telling its readers to do just that. And they were. Quite a few kit came out in that Era because of requests.
I had the Butch Miller #52 as a kid but didn’t finish it. I remember having an issue where the wheels were the wide 5s but I didn’t have the hubs. Must have been a packaging issue with the differences in the kits. I didn’t know about the differences so thanks for posting this. This was the second model kit I built (or tried to build) as a kid. My first model was the Earnhardt Goodwrench 80s Monte Carlo. Thanks to Salvinos JR as I’ll get to build the #3 again. Doesn’t sound good that these ASA Camaros will ever be produced again. It’d be great news if someone came across the molds by chance.
These are some of my favorite kits. Revell really nailed these kits along with the IMSA (GT,GTO,GTP) kits. And yes the Monogram Nascar kits of this era are nice toolings.
Those were definitely nice kits. I have always wanted some of those, but the opportunity to get some has not shown itself yet. They were something really different when Revell released them. Thanks for sharing.
I have built the #84 Camaro kit a few years ago and I totally loved it 👍 Thanks for sharing 😎 I had no idea that there were so many of these ASA kits 😮
In the early 80's we were building offset cage setups in our Street stock, Outlaw & Sportsman class 1st & 2nd Gen Camaros & 2nd Gen Novas. All our cars were street cars modifid for the racing classes we were runnig I raced mainly asphalt. I'm currantly working on 2 (actually too many projects like you theirs not enough time) project builds of both my '70 Camaro & 73 Nova short track cars. Will post pics on F/B when I get some progress.
Yes, please post your work. I love those types of race cars. When I first started in stock car racing. EVERYTHING here in Phoenix at the dirt tracks, were offset chassis. The winning cars in street stock were all running this wicked offset chassis based off of the 2nd Gen Camaros. Built by a local race car shop called Dust Devil. They were really awesome. I almost bought one. So when these ASA kits came out. They got me really excited so I bought a bunch of them.
@@TheLukaCeeChannel All the local short track guys here in Central Florida built their own race cars from modified street cars "No Racing Chassis". In Outlaw & Sportsman classes we'd use a mid 60's Chevelle type chassis under our Camaro & Nova sheetmetal. As long as it was a factory chassis it was legal (same manufarure but not the same model nessasarily). Had to retain most of the original floor & firewall to be leget.
I am building the FelPro Thunderbird for the Scale model outlaw Short track group build, see my first video for an unboxing, also have an update and post for this build. I have both T-bird kits, now I want a Camaro! Thanks for showing us these kits.
I recently got one of these kits, the Lane Automotive unit (has the little V6). Sealed kit and all of the windshield reinforcements were broken off loose in the box. Besides that I'm having a good time getting it together.
Awesome. To me, that's the coolest one to get a hold of. If I ever come across one that going for a reasonable price. I'll snag it. But not the other two. I just don't need one. I'll probably raid the hood out of my unbuilt one to use with my Senneker build.
I've got four ASA T-bird's and two Camaro's in the stash waiting to be built. If you take your time and follow the instructions it's not too bad of a kit to build. Can't do a bunch of sub assemblies on this one.
Thats a great kit. They had some cool ones in that series my favorites were the Tbirds. Fyi thats a perfect kit for our saturday nite short track group build lol
I have 2 camaros and 1 t- bird ,1 of the camaros is started, like you years ago not finished yet. One of the kits I have came with both sets of tires and the 9 hole rims. The one I started was trying to make it modified out of it, that's why it's not done.
great vid Rob that car brought back memories street drag and IROC😁🤩thx dou scooter d😎ps i thought this release was only available to club members 🤔pss if so ill pay the ransome🤣😂
I wonder what ever happened to those moulds? We know JR Salvino got all the Cup car stuff and Atlantis seemed to pick up alot of show rods and old dragsters from Monogram. Where are the truck series and Prostock kits Monogram made. I think we will be in for a big surprise from one of these manufacturers. I'm sorry I missed out on these kits cause my interests were elsewhere. Thanks for sharing.
This is a great kit and it does get easier once you have built a couple. If you do a version where the interior sheet metal and the cage is all one color you can preassemble most of those into a quite complete chassis that will be solid and can be painted later. It is possible to wrangle the rear end into place after that is done. Also as good as the kit is Revell made one key mistake in it that is quite obvious to anyone who was ever around those cars. When the kit is assembled with the body on and you look in the passenger window you can see all the way to the ground with the exhaust visible. There should be a sheet metal piece that runs from the back sheet metal to the dash that covers this up. It is easy to add a couple of pieces of Evergreen to support another rectangular piece that and you can butt it up against the rear to make it fit flush. I realized this on about my 3rd build and have added it to every one since.
Thank you for the videos. I would love to see you get the number 22 finished. It’s such an awesome looking piece!! How did you do the paint fade? Great job as always.
Thank you. I did it with an Airbrush. I haven't done fades in 30 years. When I did that one. I had a City Chevrolet Lumina and several Tide cars under my belt.
These were/are great kits!! The burning 🔥 question is, what happened to molds when Hobbico/Revell went under? Did Atlantis end up with them, are hey missing or destroyed. That would be sad for sure. Great video Luka! Good work!
I've always wanted to build one of these ASA late model stock car kits but they are too expensive on EBAY. Help me, Sal JR! lol I've found IMSA mustang's (GT, GTO, & GTP) for a good price, but these ASA camaros and thunderbirds... nope.
Unfortunately I don't think we will ever see these kits again. The molds vanished 30 years ago. The people that bought molds from Today's Revell never was offer this tooling.

Finish it up as your short track group build entry! Love those kits, had the DW kit as a kid (built it too) and always wanted the rest of 'em.

The Geoff Bodine Excide kit also had Hoosier printed tires
I seem to recall that. That's good to know that they got more use out of that mold.
Bob and Butch were both from down the street in michigan. Ive always wanted to build those two kits
Those were definitely nice kits. I have always wanted some of those, but the opportunity to get some has not shown itself yet. They were something really different when Revell released them. Thanks for sharing.

I have this kit. Gave $5 for it. The Bob Senneker kit.
Thats a great kit. They had some cool ones in that series my favorites were the Tbirds. Fyi thats a perfect kit for our saturday nite short track group build lol
I believe Jason is doing one. I've got two others in mind for my hat toss. 😁
Yes hes doing the DW car but if i remember right hes gonna rebrand it
Had the blue #84, don't recall what happened to it though.
i love Camaro's .. looking forward to this build.. thx 4 sharing.. vinny

Thanks Luka, I have the superflo kit. Would love to have the other ones but not going to spend a lot on them
I’m gonna try to build that Waltrip Camaro for the Short track build. The body on mine is pretty warped, and my decals are junk though lol.
That sucks. Make it a wreck.😂
I remember hearing that a lot of these kits were bought for the Hoosier tires and the V-6 for Busch Gtand National cars.
@@modelbuilder6820 yes, but unfortunately the GM BGN Teams didn't run Chevy V6s they ran Buicks. But it got you the look.
Somebody else did do the Moroso valve covers as I've got a pair but don't know which kit they came from.
Build that bad boy. 🏁
great vid Rob that car brought back memories street drag and IROC😁🤩thx dou scooter d😎ps i thought this release was only available to club members 🤔pss if so ill pay the ransome🤣😂
Yes they were great old kits!

Chuck full of crazy parts.
It's very difficult to find any NASCAR kits in South Africa. The problem with getting them here is that the postage is more than the kit .. 🙈

It doesn't look like either company has these molds.
ASA kits I love them

Great video Luka! Good work!
They vanished years ago. SJR models or Atlantis did not get the tooling. I'm sure they were scrapped for the metal 30 years ago.
thanks for the video
Very nice and informative kit review, so I will see you later, but have you ever worn shoes made out of alligator?????
Not yet!
Nice 😁
I think ARCA had the V6
NASCAR Busch Grand Nation ran V6s

If the 350 is a little small, is it a 305 then? haha, kidding… super cool kits though!
Good one! 😂
