  • Yuri confronts Rasputin in the skies above Petrograd on equal grounds now with the soul of Amon and had exposed Rasputin's plot to assassinate the imperial family of Russia in order to rule Europe and lock it in an eternal World War 1 with the power of Asmodeus.
I always really liked this CG cutscene because it is badass and it shows who else other than Square were flexing their CG work back then.

A 6 minute CGI mid-game, Shadow Hearts Covenant was just incredible. So many great memories of it.

Semi-aternate history JRPG set during WW1. The idea itself already sounds like something outside the usual setting or topic for a JRPG. More so when they clearly did research for both SH1 and SH2 and then just made the alternate history touches.
I feel like there is also some parallel with The Legend of Dragoon. Both came out at a bad time and both feature a reflex/timing based attack system; something that just usually is not popular.

Every time I think back to it I realize just how deep and profound the game was, it does so many things, tying in history science and philosophy along with occultism and fantasy power tropes. All while secretly educating you
      "Wait, this is just school"

@@MadJak91 I FUUUUCKING hated the spirit wheel thing at first, but by the end of the game I loved it and I ended up being nostalgic over it and its novelty
So many things about this game were nearly groundbreaking

What's funny is, I now realise the actual dungeon that follows this looks *nothing* like how you'd expect a city like this to look. You only ever see the inside of the dungeon and for some reason it's all fleshy walls and stuff. I wonder if they made this cutscene and then changed the design of Idar Flamme later?

Albert in the first game explains that these ruined castles and other structures were left hidden on Earth by some extraterrestrial beings. "God" in that game is confirmed to be a powerful alien. The Neameto Float summoned by Albert displays similar architecture inside and then the Vessel at the end of SH2 as well.
I suppose they are alien structures that are not meant to be understood.

SH2 came out in 2004-2005 since it is a PS2 game but ya, it can be overlooked. I would not say it is or was obscure but certainly hidden behind a wall of back then tons of other good PS2 JRPGs. With a less conventional battle system.

@@MadJak91 I really? I remembered it being older, mine was PS1, I still have the copy in my suit case right now
Seriously under rated game. Still to this day I think its the greatest RPG of all time, beating out all the final fanatasies and Neir:Automata. Automata is a better piece of philosophy though.

Yep! Perhaps you are also thinking of Koudelka. PS1 game released in 1999-2000 and a precursor to Shadow Hearts from the same guys.
Automata is a league of its own. It is amazing. Surprises me to see these two thrown together though :D

@@MadJak91 No, Shadow Hearts: Covenant was the only game out of the series I played. Considered going back and play Shadow Hearts
I legitimately think this game is all around better than Automata. Lots of automata was a damn slug grind to get through. The whole 2nd playthrough gives you lots of time to think and notice subtle differences, but it was not a purely enjoyable experience. It was better at showcasing the philosophy in a straightforward way using the characters. Shadow Hearts is more good vs evil dynamic, though with grey areas with characters like Lenny. The fking dumb oaf I kinda love
I could spend hours talking about all the differences and merits of the 2

Sorry, I just played the cutscene using the in-game cutscene player because I wanted to make a recording of it.
SH2 especially would be one heck of a project to record a playthrough of, haha!
Yep! The Ehrgeiz opening is still a super impressive use of CG on the PSX.
I checked in case there could be some relation but does not seem like it. A lot of CG was done inhouse (which impresses me) at that time or otherwise any link to the companies just was not mentioned and instead they credited individual people in the general graphics, modelling and motion scenes parts.
