    I usually make almost all of my food from scratch, and don't buy packaged/premade meals. So this was completely shocking to watch you go up and down the aisles and hear you say how much those types of foods cost now. Holy cow, some of those prices were absolutely outrageous!!!

      I am only 2:00 into your video and NEVER buy pre-packaged cut up anything! Pineapple is one of my biggies. So easy to cut one up yourself and it will keep for 5+ days. Cost about $1.25. You have to be an absolute fool to buy any of those things! If you can’t use it up, partner with a friend or neighbor and share. Most of your advice is really common sense, but maybe it is in short supply.

    Great messages here. The plastic packaging of those snack packs costs more than what's in them, and just ends up in land fill or choking local streams. When we buy basic ingredients in bulk and learn to make our own wholesome foods at home we're more creative, happier, healthier, and wealthier!

      My son is 41 and we were talking about high school curriculum the other day. We both think that home ec is essential in school as well as consumer math. Vocational school as well. All teach life skills for basics. When I was in jr high and high school, not everyone was blessed with parents who taught basic life skills to their children. By the time I hit college, I was really upset with myself for not taking typing and shorthand when I had the chance. We had typed papers to turn in. No computers like now

    Sorry but I'm single, don't have storage to buy the larger containers of things and wouldn't eat the larger containers of things before it went bad. Everyone has to do what they need to. Waiting to buy some seasonal items isn't a great idea because it probably won't be there after the holiday. Glad you can do this for you and your family.

      Hi! I’m single too, and if I buy a whole watermelon and cut it up, it will spoil before I get it all eaten. But, I do scout all the mark-down areas in my favorite grocery store before looking at the regular aisles. I do buy a bunch of kale or spinach to chop for salads. Buying in bulk for perishable items is a no go because of the spoilage factor. But buying like the kale and spinach gives me 3-4 salads for up to 5 days and costs about $3. Buying the spring mix bags is $4 and is only good for 2-2.5 salads. I pinch pennies where I can. At my local fancy, pricy grocery store, they have a whole deli of hot prepared food and a huge salad bar. They also have a ‘foodie club’ that’s free to join, and has daily lunch specials. When the salad and hot bar is on special, I get poached salmon for $7/lb. That’s less than I can buy wild caught fresh salmon for, and it’s already cooked. To me, that’s a bargain of both price and convenience.

      Blended watermelon is great when made into freezer pops as well.
      I'm with you guys. As a single person there is no reason to buy big containers of most things. I even have trouble finishing a gallon of milk before it spoils. I don't like frozen then thawed milk because it tastes wrong so I just buy half gallons.
      I do freeze 1/2 loaves of bread, and other perishable things that are too much for me to eat on my own.
      I recently got some meal prep containers so I can build frozen dinners with leftovers or excess food. Frozen stuff, for me, is more appetizing when presented as a ready to eat meal.

    Running a tight grocery budget takes strategic planning. I had 20.00 for this weeks groceries, so I'm just buying what I need for next weeks meals, That was butter, I bought 2 one to use one in the freezer, campbells mushroom soup and cream cheese was on sell 5 for 5. A bag of 11 chicken legs were 5.00 a bag, and a bag of onions. All in came to 17.80 for the week. Next week I know the paycheck will be short so there will only be 10.00 for groceries, then I'll get the celery and carrots. With that I can make a good chicken broth for home made noodles and with the cream of mushroom make chicken and rice. We have cans of veggies. We are not hurting for food, I'm trying to stretch what I do have to make it last us the longest amount of time possible. I don't believe prices are going to go down. What ever you do, don't waste anything.

      Very good! That was amazing ❣️ To save more, make a flour, milk gravy instead of the cream soup.( I do use the soup a lot, also.) Or If I have milk that is at it's date, I will make homemade cream soup and freeze it in the same amount as a can and use it later in recipes. 😊❣️

    A zillion years ago now, I volunteered a fruit tray for a work event then the night before I dragged myself to the grocery store along with way too many other after work shoppers. I got it my mind that it would simply be easier to buy a prelared tray and when I got to the deli at that particular time the $14.99 veggie trays had gone up to $19.99 just in time for the holidays. That was enough to send me marching to the produce department to pick up veggies and the paper goods to pick up some foil just in case. I walked out with a good 3 to 5 times the produce as what was in the de,I tray and foil for under $15; this was a long time ago. Invigorated, I covered a jelly roll pan which is the cookie sheet with edges, in foil. I chopped, sliced, and cut veggies straight from the cutting board to the tray and used quart baggies for the extras. - Oh, and then I took home what ever left overs others didn't want, rinsed off any errant dip, chopped amd diced, amd tossed directly into the crock pot. I cleaned out the fridge into the crockpot, added some water and bullion, amd turned to low. In the morning, I unplugged the crock pot first thing,, took the lid off to aide in cooling, and put tje entire crock pot in the fridge on my way out the door. This was a processes I did for years after. Deviled eggs,a huge mixed fruit salad, amd triamgled orange pieces were other fuss free and frugal take-withs to holiday meals.

    We're still finding groceries affordable since we buy basic ingredients and cook all our meals at home almost entirely from scratch and stock up on items when they're on sale. For instance if you forget the expensive chocolates and buy semi-sweet chocolate chips for $1.99/12oz you can have a 1.5oz serving for 25 cents and it has almost 4 times the cacao of a Hershey bar.
    We've got a large food storage that includes the lower salt "heart healthy" Campbell's Chunky Soups that we buy on sale for 99 cents/can. Same price for 28oz Red Gold canned crushed tomatoes that I use for everything from my home made pizza sauce to chili, spaghetti and many other dishes. This past week we scored 18ct eggs for 99 cents and a few other great deals too.
    No store bought goodies for us, just home baked ones which are a lot tastier and far less expensive. I can crank out made from scratch birthday cakes for $4, decorated with nonpareil sprinkles and a computer printed (script font) banner glued to a couple of toothpicks as well as every other baked good on the cheap. As you get older you don't want a ton of frosting so I leave my cakes in the pan so they're easy to store/transport, there's no sides to frost/pipe and I just put a thin layer of frosting on the top which is perfect because it avoids everything that we don't like about a store bought sheet cake.
    So many ways to save while eating great. We've got "Big Weekend Breakfasts" with bacon ($2.99/lb) or breakfast sausage links ($1.99/14oz), Sunday Roast dinners with whole chickens (99 cents/lb) or pork loin roasts ($1.99/lb) or beef roasts ($3.99/lb) and we always pair the bacon weekends with the whole chicken weekends because I slice the breast meat thin and hold back 2 slices of leftover bacon so we can have club sandwiches for our Monday lunch. We do the same with the sausage so we can have breakfast sandwiches on light toast with a little mayo, a couple of scrambled eggs, a slice of cheddar and a couple of sausage links which beats every single store bought and fast food offering out there. There's also "Supper Club Dining at Home" evenings, "Soda Shop Dessert Nights", and my favorite "Friday Night Pizza and Movie Nights" with 80's music videos while I make the pizza from scratch, a cartoon short from the 30's followed by the main feature with an intermission about halfway through when it's back to the 80's music videos while I make popcorn or kettle corn from scratch on the stove top and then it's back to the movie while we happily munch away. Eating out has become an expensive disappointment and by packing a simple lunch whenever we go out for more than a few hours we'll never go to a restaurant ever again.
    I would also add that containers like the one from the animal crackers are fantastic for organization and storage. It's easy to see filling them with Legos, Lincoln logs and other toys or large bulky items of all sorts. Recycling is sort of a scam so I like to focus on reducing and reusing. Glass jars with wide mouths are good for all sorts of things as are old pump hair spray bottles for all sorts of home made cleaning supplies and other sprays.
    Cheers!

    Single here with ample in my freezer I need to eat down. So my anti-inflation efforts are as follows: limit the weekly food budget to $40. If I find a good buy, I make it and simply freezer forage to stay on budget. Prepared foods are pretty much not on the shopping list, no matter what the price (except peanut butter and Raisin Bran cereal, etc.). As an Aldi shopper, none of the purchases come from major brands. I do buy organic (milk, eggs, butter, etc.), look to limit sugar, etc., and now shopping takes less time. Occasionally it feels limiting, I admit, but most times I feel pleased about how it’s working. The slow cooker is out, Im back to making my own yogurt, and food waste is less of an issue. Sour dough bread, muffins, and daily soups are next. Once I’ve eaten through my freezer and pantry, I’ll re-evaluate.

    I highly recommend buying a good salad spinner. I am much more likely to eat a salad if I don’t have to prep it everyday. Buy the large bunch of 2 types of lettuces and wash and spin it dry and place it in a large air tight container with a paper towel layer on the bottom to catch any remaining moisture and it will keep all week. A few slices of cucumber and onion with a couple of grape tomatoes and you have a nice salad, and a fast and easy side dish. Small amounts of left over meat and you have a light supper or lunch. It is also good on a sandwich. Sandwich doesn’t care if it is already cut up all that matters is it is still crisp? I have washed full leaves of green leaf and put them into a gallon size plastic bags for pretty sandwich lettuce.

    Now I know how people spend over $900 a month on food. My goodness that stuff is expensive. I had no idea, because I don't shop for it. I just finished calculating the cost for our morning 1/2 cup oatmeal (before cooking) with Walnuts, raisins, cinnamon and gur. Under 45 cents a serving. I made Chana masala, roti and homemade yogurt, enjoy it for lunch or dinner, 80 cents a serving. Fresh, homemade is BEST!!!! So that is two meals in the day so far and only spent $1.25. Now how about a couple of eggs .34 cents, a slice of toast (organic whole grain) with butter and jelly .40 cents. So two dollar for three healthy meals. Go crazy, through in a 🍌 banana for 19 cents and 20 cents for a tomato 🍅. $2.39 to eat for a day.

    My jaw dropped on the 15 dollar salad tray. Incredible people really buy that! And that's also a lot of plastic to be wasted for some snacking. I so agree: stop buying processed stuff, safe so much money and gain so much better food! Here in the Netherlands we have Asian supermarkets, we also call them tokos (I don't kow if you have them in the States), and Turkish supermarkets. You can buy larger quantities of far better stuff, way cheaper than a small package in the supermarket. Also the fruits and vegetables are much cheaper and so much tastier. Even most of the time they are open to make a deal if you ask. Try that in a supermarket! I think in the West in our hunt for more and more and more, we have lost our taste, it's just all about quick and easy. And sugar and salt. Lots of it...

    Great tips guys! One more thing I’d like to add is to cut out the coffee creamers and oat milks, almond milks, etc to make your own. they are so expensive and I switched to just heavy whipping cream awhile back but you can easily make your own creamers using pumpkin purée and things like that for seasonal treats. I’m making my own oat milk too using dates and spices. I also make my own homemade toothpaste and deodorant and my teeth are in good health. The deodorant recipe is super simple and works better than any conventional one I’ve ever tried. It’s just 2 tablespoons of corn starch, 2 tbs of baking soda, 2.5-3 tablespoons of coconut oil and a few drops of essential oil. Toothpaste recipe is: 2 tbs baking soda, 4 tbs coconut oil, 5 tbs of bentonite clay with a few drops of peppermint essential oil. You can add xylitol is you wish for taste. Just make sure you spit it in the trash can to not clog your pipes. Love mint mobile!! Switched to them about 7 years ago and never looked back.

    I'm starting to work myself up to trying to make more things instead of buying them - I'm finding the habit of buying what I'm used to is a tough one to break! It's so automatic to just grab that $4 or $5 container of flavored coffee creamer, or the pack of English muffins, or bagels, or the jar of mayonnaise. I know I can make these things - I've done it before. It takes time to do though - I think that's part of the issue. If I do just a few things I feel like I'm not saving enough to make much difference, but trying to do everything from scratch I feel completely overwhelmed!

      I would start with one thing and get so good at it that it feels easy and takes no time at all. Then add more. Meal prep is a regular part of my life every weekend with maybe a mid week top up. I started with batch cooking and then freezing portions. Took me a year to get used to doing it quickly and working out how to meal prep for the week. Now I make ingredients and then I mix and match different meals every day. You can do it! It’s a journey, not a race.
      Plus…it’s okay to have some convenience as long as you are making your choices consciously. You’ve got this!

Yes, it might be more expensive but you get over double then I showed her the price per pound. It was only $3.28 a pound versus her wanting to spend $6.98 a pound for it being sliced. Learning how to prolong the life of produce, is worth learning! I'm single, and I buy the 3 pk of Organic Romaine. Once I get it home, I take each Romaine 'head' and wrap it in a paper towel, then all 3 go in one of the plastic bags one finds in the produce section; and make sure you get as much of the air OUT of the bag, before twist-tying it closed. That lettuce CAN last one month without going bad. And anything that CAN be frozen......FREEZE IT! I've done this with oranges before; peel them....separate the wedges and freeze them. FROZEN Orange Wedges are awesome! Also, LEARN TO CAN! Things can be bought in bulk and can be preserved; this also goes for DEHYDRATING! Buy a dehydrator while they're still inexpensive (and while they're STILL AVAILABLE!).
      Pretty soon (REALLY soon!), people will have NO CHOICE but to change how they shop! And they will have NO CHOICE but to LEARN how to preserve their food. Inflation IS not, and WILL NOT be going down! Get ready to spend $20 for a LOAF OF BREAD.....OR.....LEARN to make it yourself, And THIS is the reality that people will soon find themselves living in. So, it's in peoples best interest to LEARN NOW. And CHANGE whatever NEEDS to be changed! Or.....STARVATION is what's in peoples future! Also, in our future, are BARE grocery shelves!
      Again, I'm single.....but if someone saw me shopping, they'd think that I was shopping for a 'family'. I PRESERVE what I buy. (Small) Deep Freezer/Canning/Dehydrator.

    I love your suggestion to buy "holiday items" after the holiday for next year! I would like to add that the items you show are items you NEVER actually NEED! Like the plastic pumpkin decor, or the halloween bags. If you go back to the store and they're all gone, it's OK! You can always go again next year. Sometimes you do need the "thing" like a turkey for Thanksgiving. We had a very frugal but "all the trimmings" Thanksgiving this year (Canadian Thanksgiving was this past weekend) using frozen turkey we bought on steep sale last year. We still have a turkey left, so before our next stock-up (probably after Christmas), we'll have another one. Turkeys are great for a big dinner party - even if it's not a holiday, or you just stick a lot of ready-cooked meat in the freezer for quick meals.

      Lots of people make the mistake of thinking that freezing food makes it last forever. The longer it’s frozen, the poorer the quality. Fruit will lose all its flavour if it’s frozen for too long for example. And I read that it’s a waste of time freezing fat like butter. It will still go off just after the use by date.

It makes me feel like I'm having a kind of soda. OK, there isn't any fizz and it isn't sweet, but it is nicely flavored. As a single person I have trouble finishing large packages of food before it goes bad.
    I have trouble finishing a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread on my own. I dislike frozen then thawed milk so I just buy half gallons. I freeze half loaves of bread and other things that freeze well.
    I got some food prep containers and I build ready to eat meals in them, and store them in the freezer.
    Frozen stuff is more appealing when it's ready to microwave and eat.
    Food that I am learning to process and trying to prep by myself;
    (Small batches unless it will freeze well and I have room in the freezer at that time.)
    * salsa
    *ranch dressing
    *sauces, gravies, marinades
    * bread, rolls, etc(I just got a bread machine yay!)
    * soups
    *varieties of potato prep
    I've also switched to dried beans and regular rice, and I buy lots of pasta when it goes on sale.
    There will be more of course, in the future. Basically. I'm back to old fashioned cooking like my mom taught me.
    One of my favorite things to do is creating and/or modifying restaurant dishes at home.
    My best ones so far are the maple butter blondes that Applebee's used to have and the chicken gnocchi soup from Olive Garden.
    I have almost entirely cut fast food from my diet due to the expense. Instead if I crave something deep fried, I cook a knock off version in my air fryer.
    It's one of the best purchases I've made in a long time because of it's numerous functions. Air frying, dehydrating, toasting, baking, roasting, convection cooking and broiling.
    Good tools and appliances make the job a lot more pleasant. 🙂
    Edit: typos

      U.S. grocery stores are known for higher prices on non-food items, such as toiletries, cleaning and household products, as well as general merchandise. Profit margins on food, particularly basics, are very low. They make their money on convenience items--or the convenience of one-stop shopping. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Day after Christmas for Christmas lights and gift bags. I also try to score plain red or green wrapping paper so I can use it for the year. Last year I scored 75% on adorable reusable burlap sacks for Christmas. So will be able to use those for a few years at home.

    I will only pick up the prepackaged vegetables when they are half price. I take them home and pickle them with vinegar and water and what ever spices I want. I love to use Oriental spices so I can dump the whole quart of vegetables onto a large pan, put in a home canned jar of meat, cook up some rice noodles (they cook in about 3 minutes) aand I have an Oriental meal in minutes. The pickled vegetables will last in the refrig for several months.

    Good video, however I must disagree with saying the cookies are generally the same just packaged differently. Sixty years ago I asked my mommy to buy Oreo cookies and she came home with Hydrox. I was so disappointed. She said it's the same thing. I said if it's the same thing then why not buy the Oreos?! It is NOT the same thing! Kids aren't stupid. I'll never forget that.
