Because they call it greater London it's used as a distinction as it's an international airport because nobody knows where Crawley is around the world but London is familiar. It's the same with Stansted, Luton and Southend. I'm from Crawley and asked myself the same question.

Why is Gatwick considered as an Airport of London if its literally far away from London and is in a Town called Crawley?
