I'm interested in some of those fiber cables & the power strips. However, I'm more interested in some 4 or 8GB RDIMMs for my sister's Poweredge 1900 I set up for her desktop.
Those slim management systems are quite popular among people with rack mount dj equipment for running the wait test or background music. they fit nicely in the racks with the amp and eq and light controllers.
It is not unusual that datacenter equipment looks like new even after many years of operation. A proper data center is hermetically sealed and the air conditioning system cools everything down. Fresh air is filtered. So no dust can get into the room and into the machines. There are also no carpets or printers (paper) inside those rooms.
All that formerly expensive stuff and you collect the velcro things: I can totally understand, I collect these as well, and they are being re-used, over a 1000 now.
You must collect what you can use... Sometimes I keep a cool looking tool-case and throw away the stuff inside. There is a point where the packaging has more value than the parts inside :-)
9:51 ... I have a deal for you ... since you love the Velcro cable ties so much, I will trade you those two cabinets full of that awesome gear, for a lifetime supply of Velcro cable ties, hahaha
Looking epic. Ironically I'm seeing one like this on an auction site. I'm torn between this and another one with some IBM 2U servers. Just wondering how the heck will I transport it if its still filled with equipment!? I just love that blue light when I looked it up.
You can expect 500-1000kg per rack. So you'll need a large truck with hydraulic ramp if you want to move it fully assembled or you need to remove the disk enclosures from the rack. Keep in mind that every door sill or stair step is a huge obstacle. Also the height of the door must be checked.... I personally wouldn't think about owning one privately ;-) But others move IBM mainframes in their basement... Where a will is, there is a way :-)
As I said.... most switch mode power supplies will work on DC. There is only one problem with those EMC bricks: There is no button to turn them off or on. All the communication works via the serial port. But they actually do work. You plug them in and the output has 230VAC.... you unplug them and you get 250VDC output until the batteries are empty or a certain amout of time is over.
Mine is configured to 7.5 minutes I think. Since I bought it in a "non working" condition for 30€ (shipped from a different country). Still a very good battery pack if you get it for cheap. Also thanks for the reply really appreciated.
Nice job you have! Do you get to keep stuff like the SSD's or UPS' for yourself if the employer isn't interested? Lol at removing the tiny battery... I guess you had to, it being chemical wast and all...
I believe those controllers run embedded Linux. A bit surprising that they are PC-based. I would had expected SPARC or PowerPC in something that high-end. Was this a spare unit that was never put into service?
The older Clariion systems run on Windows Storage Server. Maybe something similar here. Thi unit came back from a bank. I don't know how long they used it.
VPLEX is a storage virtualization system, it does not have drives (other than the ones for OS an cache preservation purposes) it manages storage from cabinets attached to it, as a single point of management for heterogeneous storage environments, and such

I have to stop these teardown videos, it is depressing and my suppressed inner hoarder is screaming inside ;) A few comments: SUSE enterprise is not free, same with RHEL. The servers connecting to UPS-es: The usual way is to connect one power supply to one UPS and the other to a different one, especially with the always on-line kind. I thought that was the usual practice in the enterprise space?
Yeah in datacenters all power sockets come from an UPS. But there is no need to have an additional UPS in the rack. Well some people install them anyway. But in small business IT you often have only one UPS and then you connect one power supply to the UPS and the other to the grid. Of course you can also install two UPSes but I have never seen such an installation. Most people save that money :-)
I hear you Dragan, I am having anxiety attacks watching these beautiful structures being demolished. Hard to believe there is no value remaining in these systems that once cost several hundred thousand dollars!
You were probably just here early, so the other video streams had not been processed yet, this is pretty common if you get to a video that has just been uploaded. If you see this again in the future, it is probably best to just try again later, rather than commenting on it, there really isn't much the uploader can do about this anyway.

Hey bro, nice equipment. Do you work for a datacenter?
Mr. PWJ is a cool dude.
Thanks... ;-)
I use one of those battery packs as a UPS. It only outputs DC but that works for all the gear I plugged into it. Also 2.2kW output rating :D

Wish I had that much junk to play with, I would try to use that stuff for other projects. Like thos battery packs, I would make a huge bank.
I would put new packs in those Liebert UPSes and put them in service.
i'm too, is very good, my storage is an desktop celeron, 1gb ddr2 and hdd of 80gb 7200rpm.

Weii you know parts can always be used for many things. The batteries are still good, I may use them in PCs with failed ones.
I would have paid serious cash just to help you take this thing apart :D
Send me some serious cash and I invite you the next time.... ;-)

Most of these run windows storage server. I believe the vmax is the run with Linux.
if this needs to go... and i worked there... i would personally "take care" of them... and my house would be filled with servers even more
Also, how much data was that handling? Seems like an awful lot of equipment for the drive capacity of that era...
Not so much about raw storage space but more about redundancy, reliability and most of all a lot of IOPS.
Another very interesting video. Thanks
Do the controllers have a VGA? I wonder what OS to they boot into?
I have not seen a VGA port. But they most likely have a serial data port.... unfortunately I don't have the system anymore.
