    Excellent idea for releasing a stuck chuck but I would be cautious about using it to tighten one. Still worth a 👍 ! 😊.

    Very nice. If only someone would invent a chuck that used something like a geared drive to tighten and loosen, eh? It may be a pain because you’d constantly loose the drive key, I guess, but at least you could tighten it firmly to avoid the drill spinning in the chuck, and you’d always be able to open the chuck again…

    A great tool for that stubborn keyless chuck. Speaking of chucks, why do so many RUclips machinists not use a 4 jaw chuck on anything much bigger than their thumb? Not too hard to master and, as I was told some 50 years ago, “you can swing a battleship by its bowsprit in a 4 jaw chuck, IF you can get it in the machine” such is it’s gripping power !

      I agree with you,Mike. I rarely use my 3 jaw chuck.
      I was taught to use the centre lathe by 2 toolmakers and they only ever used 4 jaw chucks, faceplates,or collets but never any self centering 3 jaw chucks.
      Truing work up in a 4 jaw becomes a quick process with a little bit of practice and the 4 jaw independent chuck is far more versatile than any 3 jaw chuck.

    • @mikequinn6206
      @mikequinn6206 2 месяца назад

      @@howardosborne8647 Thanks Howard, because I specialise in precision cylindrical grinding I mostly use a 3 jaw chuck on my Jones & Shipman universal and only use a 4 jaw for larger, heavier and/or odd shaped jobs. That 3 jaw chuck is mounted on a “floating” backplate. Because of the very light pressures involved with cylindrical grinding, the backplate and chuck assembly is only lightly secured to the machine’s fixed backplate with 3 screws and large clearance holes that are also lightly tensioned. When a workpiece is mounted it is quick and easy to “clock” the job up precisely, taking only seconds from one workpiece to the next. On a lathe, however, the independent 4 jaw chuck rules!

      Почему, почему... Время - деньги, и терять время на установку заготовки, которая все равно будет обтачиваться и снаружи, и внутри, в четырехкулачковом патроне - непозволительная роскошь. Плюс, патрон с хорошо проточенными и отшлифованными кулачками прекрасно зажимает и центрирует деталь. А четырехкулачковый патрон есть смысл применять в одном-единственном случае, при зажиме неровных и многогранных заготовок. В остальных случаях это просто трата времени (а значит, и денег) заказчика, что является неуважением к его технической неграмотности и использованием этого недостатка в свою пользу, что не этично.

    What part of keyless chuck don't you understand?
    These chucks are designed to work WITHOUT a key, so why waste time making something to FORCE the jaws tighter than designed?
    If you really want to hold something that tight, just buy a chuck with a key!
    A waste of time effort and materials.
    BTW, you don't usually place a freshly knurled part into the chuck and mark/damage the knurl.

    • @CoolIdeasDIY-qv1nz
      @CoolIdeasDIY-qv1nz  2 месяца назад +3

      When drilling holes, the chuck clamps and cannot be unclamped by hand, so I came up with this contraption to avoid messing up the chuck with a gas wrench

  • @jamesbutler5570
