this is by far the most natural Mars Volta interview i have seen. they usually look quite miserable during interviews, but they look like they are genuinely enjoying themselves here.
I have been a fan of Atdi for ever. I met Cedric at the Mars Volta album released party in SF back in 04. I bought a ticked at the door from a blond cheerleader type of girl. She won the ticket and a free backstage pass from a phone-call she made to a radio show. Girl had no idea who the Mars Volta were. Sold it to me for twenty bucks . I went backstage, met the band, talked to Cedric. He happens to be born in Redwood city CA . City I moved out to back in December 01 from South America. We spoke Spanish the whole time and shared our music taste with each other.I remember talking about a specific movie called El Topo. Awesome experience.
@@leomack665 I remember talking about his voice that night. There was a blender on the table and lots of oranges and lemons around it. He mentioned his voice was meh that night. They did not play Concertina. I asked him about that. He went back to his voice. Really cool guy. This was back before iphones though man. otherwise I would have a photo with him.
Legendary stories from a legendary life. People on the west-coast really got an intense liking to this band and the one prior-thus the stories began, and got epic thereafter.
Holy shit. This is the best interview I've ever seen of Cedric and Omar. Possibly the best interview ever. Finally, someone who doesn't suck. You rule, dude.
Observations. 1) Likely Nardwuar's best interview. 2) Cedric and Omar take their craft seriously and it seems they've occasionally come across as being pretentious, but really I think they're an alright bunch, particularly here in a somewhat natural setting as opposed to the corporate day-in-day-out interviews. 3) Think this was the most comfortable anyone has been around Nard, easy-going. 4) Foreign people are generally nicer people. 5) Winona Ryder, hm.
@Dillon Skye I reaalllly don't think they're on acid here, like I would highly doubt that. Why do you say that even? Cause they're in a good mood? Doesn't really make sense, what makes you think they're tripping? If they're high on anything they're probably just baked or maybe on some sort of upper, does not seem like they're on acid at all really.
I think what made this interview awesome is the fact that Nardwaur know's so so much about the music world and it makes cedric and omar actually enjoy talking to him. Interviewers do so much better when they know as much or more than their interviewees when it comes to music because they ask the right questions.
So there was a moment in the history of the world where The Mars Volta and Nardwuar's band played music on the same stage? I'm just gonna go sit over here and die happy. Goodbye world, it's been a great time.
Yep, definitely the best interview for mars volta. I think Mars volta appreciate a guy that isn't a generic interviewer. Probably why they're always laughing and enjoying it so much. Cool to watch.
like many of his books Octaedro is a compilation of several short stories, in this case 8 stories that's why is called Octaedro. Cortázar plays with many themes in the book from death to dreams. You should read it. The stories are all fill with, how the ordinary becomes something fantastic. Only for readers who are willing to create their own interpretations. In the same as with the Mars Volta music.
If you listen to the interview on the website he showed them other records between Magma's and Throbbing Gristle's but they're edited out in this video. I'm not sure if that was a great idea because it makes it seem like Narduwar considers Gristble to be a prog rock band, when in reality they were an industrial band.
I just want to point out how quick Nard is on his toes at 0:53 Nard asks if there's a kettle on stage and Cedric answer's "yes there is, hot water" and Nard, quick and ready with the question of "well what are you drinking though" in which he quickly realizes his question is answered and without missing a beat launches in this rapid fire tollbooth of follow up "would u ever add any tea to that What are your fav teas Would u drink camel mile and fall asleep Have you ever fallen asleep?" Genius^^
Wow that guy did his homework. He actually struck the right chords and got them to speak. Normally when they do interviews they look like they wanna shoot themselves.
@Gliebhard I dunno how much Spanish you speak, but Castilian Spanish and Mexican Spanish can be very different at points, so Cedric might be referring to the idea that the Blade Runner language could take from each. Or maybe they're just way too stoned.
lol...well your right, but there is more than 600 mexican dialects completely different to spanish with different roots (i am mexican), how curious...cedric is the one who actually HAS mexican ascendance, but he speaks a lot less spanish than omar...(puertorican...i think they speak spanish AND english down there) who talks fluently (with "acento costeño" like he said)
Just to point out what maybe Omar, Cedric, and Nardwuar failed to mention is that I Am Spoonbender released on Gold Standard Laboratories (that album too) the same indie The Mars Volta were signed to.
Oh man, I didn´t know these guys are this awesome! No wonder I love pretty much everything they do (because apparently I also love the talking they do!)!
@AdamClaytonWright It's really interesting to see the influences of the Mars Volta... Black Flag, The Stooges, Led Zepplin, King Crimson... all bands who fuckin' wrote music history like music gods... I wonder if The Mars Volta knows the Ozric Tentacles and what they're thinking of them...
wow. this video has introduced me to nardwuar and now i love him. i mean he would probably freak me out if i just ran into him on the street without knowing him but hes one hell of an interviewer.
wait what i just lost so much respect for cedric for saying, "sorry courtney" to courtney luv... literally would have turned down a free ticket to his show if he is cool with her wtf.
This is indisputably one of my favorite Nardwuar interviews.
It is indisputably one of his best? Or at the very least, the mars volta's best?
Omar’s laugh is so cute and innocent I just love them both
this is by far the most natural Mars Volta interview i have seen. they usually look quite miserable during interviews, but they look like they are genuinely enjoying themselves here.
gumbilicious1 its the nardwuar effect
They're so high
I genuinely enjoy myself when I am on acid too
Every Nardwuar interview is a fucking history lesson. So many layers on this one.
Yes Pedro the kids cud learn mountain of know how from nardwuar interviews alone, wonder did he ever leave BC to do one not that in maters lol

Nardwuar not knowing Peter Christopherson's nickname was 'Sleazy' is the only instance I've seen of his knowledge failing him
They're so giggly here it's ridiculous. I love it.
We had good weed back then.
The chemistry really hit home with this one. Well done!

Haha, I love Cedric's analysis of what the fans notice, "everything but the music!"
Nice to see a band as successful as these guys stay grounded. Caught myself giggling along with them the whole time.

For anyone wondering the Julio Cortazar book is "We Love Glenda So Much and Other Tales"
Dude I did not expect this to be so good. Seems like it’s not only the best Mars Volta interview, but one of the best nardwuar interviews as wel
This is probably my favorite interview you have done, one of my favorite bands, highly entertaining
I bought frances the mute, put it on, missed my exit and drove almost 50 km before i realized
You get sucked into a different world listening to that album and The Bedlam in Goliath.
Saw them open for SOAD.
One song was like 14 minutes,
and I somehow enjoyed every second.
Wow, this is such a crazy time capsule. Love this.
The Mars Volta is the best herpes I could've ever caught!
8:09 such an unnecessarily long laugh from both of them after that whole ordeal, I love it.
Don Caballero shoutout! Pittsburgh, PA!

best nardwuar interview
the shrooms are kicking in for the volta
this interview is awesome! love to see them having such a great time
it's always an amazing interview when nardwuar's research hits on all points
Man I hope Nardwuar interviews SOAD one day so he can ask Daron about the little guy pushing the pedal.
or what they're "pushing"
The siconization in "cup" is just lovely 4:40

I genuinely never thought of a video where Nardwuar would interview Cedric and then bring up 2 girls 1 cup. But here I am
"Shut up Cedric"
I think Nardwuar has the perfect approach to interview them. Humour, he knows what he's talking about and he doesn't say like: I LOVE YOUR MUSIC.
wow they mentioned don caballero, fucking amazing. this is probably the best interview I have ever seen of TMV, nardwuar is pretty awesome.
the shot at 0:58 of nardwar's cameraman in the mirror. massive green fucking mohawk.
Nard's finest hour. Funny interesting and very very entertaining.

This interview must be from the time when Cedric had $1000 a week weed habit
Whyd you say that lmao

The Mars Volta is like herpes.

best TMV interview so far.
HAHAH THEY ARE SO LIT
You can tell how smart these guys actually are.

damn right! i love everything about amputechture... except "el ciervo", all songs are true masterpieces to me
I honestly think the closer serves is purpose on that album amazingly. Like I can't imagine a better closer for amputechture
the irony in the end, Omar says TMV was going to be around and growing and actually the complete opposite thing happened
Well, they were around and spread for a while.
I'm just glad they existed, they really pushed the envelope in 2001 but sucked big time in 2012
