Picked up a DJI Osmo Action this week. I sold my GoPro and thought I'd just roll with my iPhone 15 Pro but ultimately, I like having a rugged camera. Going to test it out this weekend camping in the Pocono's.
Great Video!👌 The iPhone looks great though I really prefer the Action 4 due to the dynamic range specially compared to the iPhone’s UltraWide lens. In the sample beside the lake, you can see the iPhone crushed all the shadow details in the trees but the Action 4 could keep that area well exposed and yet keep your face well exposed too. Wish you compared them in low light too, because the Action 4 has a big sensor.

Great video... can you do a quick video in the standard picture profiles for the crowd who doesn't always have the time to color grade.
it all depends on the purpose you want a camera for, casual photography and filming go for iphone, outdoor sports/swimming etc go for the dji
Yea the guy isn’t really making that clear, the phone is for a purpose just like the action cam, neither is better or worse, they both have a job
I just starting mixing in Apple Log with SLog3 and it’s just so impressive how much the iPhone footage looks like a real mirrorless. Shooting into bright sun or bright lights is really the biggest downfall of the iPhone. Still very usable as a backup cam.

you can see the difference in low light as soon as it get cloudy look at the detail in his in his hoodie and his bag at 3:54 secs action camera look very muddy and less detail
Not just missed, but should have been a segment, but now that I know a little more about action cams, they struggle in low light

Yea but concidering the price 265€ currently for the action 4 in germany vs 1200€ for the iphone is a huge difference, sure you can use the iphone for many other things. But nice video thanks for the comparison.

IDK, I HATE using cell phone for photo/video, but the IQ is definitely on par or better. Please do a low(er) light test and/or maybe a studio test. Things get wonky in lower light. On a side note I've decided that in some situations b/c of computational capabilities newer phones out class mirrorless cameras.

I got Tim's luts!! Super awesome! He is legit!!! So I bought an Action 4 after all LOL......I just don't want to bring my Phone in the water, I still just don't trust that. Plus I don't want to mount my phone in dangerous places, I would much prefer to use the Action 4 for real action situations. I want to do POV videos for photography so it will be better than using my iPhone for those smaller and such, but dang the iPhone looks soo good!

Hi Anthony, interesting episode. Personally I think the Action series is great in terms of price/quality and as robust as it gets in my opinion. The iPhone obviously has a few advantages taken the price into account it should actually deliver on it. I prefer the Sony Xperia 5V as it is basically a zv-1 in your pocket
If you got a phone that can take really good videos and photos, then that's all you need.
But if you're going to be travelling to dodgy areas in a foreign country, then you are far better off with using an action camera as your main thing.
Probably better in any case to just buy a old smartphone that takes good photos and that has a good memory, and a separate action camera like a DJI action 4.
Then you have the best of both worlds, and it's still cheaper than buying an iPhone 15, which is really expensive.

I wish they would put a portrait mode into these action cameras. I know the chips are smart enough. If the phones can give us a fake blurry background these action cameras should be able to. They would instantly be 10x better for vlogging.

Sony really missed the opportunity twice. First with zv-1 mark II. no 10 bit and slower lens. Second with their flagship phone, no 10bit no log profile. There are plenty of people use sony cameras who want a point and shoot pocket camera that can be mixed with their footage. Now the best option for this point and shoot market seems to be the iPhone.

Alright, Anthony. Unless you are looking for a wide DOF and super wide FOV and although the action cameras have better stabilisation for stuff beyond walking. It's the iPhone all the way. Given that you are likely to always have your phone on you, it's a no brainer. For action shooting though, you obviously can't beat the action cameras. Anyway, that's 5 of my cameras going into the bin 😆 Cheers, Dave.
