Love this vlog! I only swapped out some my winter clothes because it’s still cold, but I always gravitate towards pinks, whites and blues in the spring. I have only been brave enough to wear a blouse once so far this year. I generally go by the old Scottish saying “never cast a cloot ‘til the month o’ May is oot!”
Which means, don’t get rid of the layers until after May 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😂

The other thing I was thinking about (sorry to keep jumping in) is that the light at this time of year is different - which means we see colours differently which may also be influencing you/me.

I was hanging onto clothes that I used to wear to work, and now that I am retired, I finally let go of them.

I've had to watch your video twice! I am currently reading the book on your recommendation and it's very thought provoking. I'm not near the end yet but it's really having an effect on me.
With you about the weather - I'm desperate to wear my summer clothes but as you say it's far too cold. What's in/should be in my wardrobe is a whole other topic and I won't bore you with it but suffice to say there have been drastic changes in my life and I really want to work out what I want to wear. Thank you so much for the recommendation of the book - I think it will be life changing.

That was a great vlog, it really got me thinking and I’ll try and track down that book in my local library. I also work from home and I’m very much stuck in a fleecy pj pants and baggy jumper rut, and I hate it. Right now the fanciest clothes I have are a pair of second hand jeans and a jumper that I only wear when I leave the house. The struggle is real!
I’m very new to sewing and trying to do it on a budget. I live in Canada and we don’t have the amazing array of fabric shops you have in the UK. Looking for remnants or lower priced fabrics that suit my style, colour preferences and sewing level are a challenge for sure. But I have to say, discovering your RUclips channel (and all the other wonderful sewists here) is really informative and inspirational!
My MeMadeMay pledge is to build up my sewing skills (not just staying safe with boxy, woven t-shirts and pjs 😂) but tackling darts, buttons, zips and stretch fabric so I can elevate my work and life wardrobe to suit who I am now. Thanks for all your inspiration. I love watching your videos with a cup of tea and always feel excited to get back to my sewing machine!

I love watching your videos. It's like watching a brain dump. So fascinating. I can hear you thinking aloud and watching the process. It really helps me understand your thoughts. I grew up at the beach where the weather was pretty much the same all year long. I wore mostly the same clothes no matter the time of year, I just put on a sweater at night. So I never needed to switch out my wardrobe. Now I live in the Southeastern US where there are definite seasons. I actually need to make or purchase a coat, (oh my) and I basically have clothes for fall/winter and for spring /summer. I learned last year that I need to put away my winter wardrobe during the summer. Last fall I had to wash all my winter clothes because they were dusty from hanging in the closet for six months, oops. I am like you, I like to have different colors for the different times of year. I wear richer colors in the winter and lighter in the summer. I did a pretty good job this winter making clothes for the colder months, but I really need to work on my spring/summer wardrobe. That is my plan for May. More summer tops for sure. Thanks for sharing.

I understand what you're saying about your wardrobe colors not matching your mood even though it's cold and you want your warm clothing. Two of the best purchases I ever made were a coral colored pullover sweater that'l made from cotton, not wool and another cotton cardigan that's a bold rose pink with colorful Asian embroidered designs. They're warm yet mood lifting when I'm just sick of winter. I look forward to seeing your spring plans.

Fascinating and a very cohesive description. I am now working from home and, going into winter, find I have no warm ‘work from home’ garments. I totally wore out the few I had last winter. To make things even worse, I have put on 9 stone in the last 20 years and pretty much my whole wardrobe does not fit. I even have awesome ready made garments I have never worn that are sitting in a few trunks. I am going to take what you said and do some thinking. I am starting to sew again after 35 years so am starting with a clear slate. Unfortunately I already have quite a stash!!!! Thanks again for the blog - gave me lots to think about.

Wow what a no brainer if we’d only thought about it! This so resonated with me. It’s cold here too (NY) but I want color! The first seconds your video popped up my first thought was how springy your top was. Yet it sure looked warm. Thanks for talking about this!

Sam, the book sounds thought provoking. I can relate to the feeling of wanting warm comforting clothes in winter and warm clothes in spring but the spring ones need to be more fresh ( it’s not the word I want but you know what I mean.) I did my wardrobe swap last weekend - to be honest I kept down a lot of my current clothes as I try and sew a greater percentage of trans-seasonal clothing. I also took the clothes I don’t want to the charity shop - I read somewhere it’s best to take them straight away or else you can find yourself taking them back out of the bag again! A few of my older summer me mades got put into the upcycling box and I am trying to tackle one recycle project a month. However, I’m regretting some of the thicker coats and jumpers I put away in the loft…….

I found it hard to put to the jumpers away. Fresh is how I feel about that I'm looking for too x

Great vlog Sam, certainly got me thinking. I recently retired and need to have clothes that I am happy wearing at home, at the moment I just have a few ready made jogging bottoms and sweatshirts but in colours that I’ve worn all winter, I think it’s time for a refresh and I’m going to start planning. Thank you ❤😊

I'm feeling this too! I still need to wear long sleeves and layers and to keep my legs covered, but I want to wear lighter colors and spring prints. I like your idea of pulling out the things that don't feel right for the season and seeing what's left.

Good one and well done. It made me go to my wardrobe and check my colours out. I hang clothes by their colour and my stash is also by colour. Definitely 4 main colours of yellow, hot pink, orange & purples with neutrals of while, black, navy and animal print. We are heading into out autumn and winter here in Australia, so I wear more purples then.

At the moment my wardrobe is a disaster area I have put on a lot of weight this last year and have had a double mastectomy so I have been slopping around in pjs and cardigans as nothing fits me I haven’t left the house in seven months and don’t know how to get back to some sort of normal life I would be grateful for any help you can offer

Always enjoy hearing your musings about wardrobe. For me, even though I am in a climate with distinct summer and winter, I can't manage to swap clothes out. I loathe winter, and I have still not come up with a winter wardrobe that appeases me in any way. So it's usually my summer wardrobe with a giant faux fur coat and some leggings. I also really can't sew fast enough to worry too much about seasonality; I cut out long sleeved shirts to sew for this winter, and didn't manage it at all, so they're on the shelf for next autumn sewing, i hope.

In the Charleston SC area we have more summer than any other season. I never thought about different colors for seasons. We do have a short winter and a brief spring. Autumn usually skips us. But I do feel like dressing a little different even if it is mostly for warm/hot.

I do swap my clothes for spring/summer n fall/winter with core basics that I wear year round which are pants n tanks n camis n cardigans in black & brown... what is tripping me up is retiring 5 years ago n am still wearing my office attire n feeling out of balance ... I've been sewing helter skilter since retiring but haven't figured out my style... flannel shirts n slacks are out of balance for me... loving all the bright colors n buying them but am at a loss to style random pieces into useful outfits... thank you for inspiring me to think outside the color box...

Really interesting vlog Sam - I’m definitely going to have a proper review of my wardrobe very soon. I watched the vlog that Una shared at the virtual social which was really interesting and now I’m retired I have plenty of time to do it properly and get shot of the work wardrobe and replace with me made garments that suit my current lifestyle 😊

Your vlog has also got me thinking! I do wear seasonally appropriate colours I would say as I’m always drawn to darker colours in winter & lighter in summer. I haven’t made my Me Made pledge yet, still thinking about this one 😅

Watching you from Florida and preparing to freeze when I get home! If any of your viewers have Kindle, I've spotted that the Big Dress Energy book is only £3.99 in that format. It might just be what I read on the flight home!
All your vlogs are interesting, but parts of this one really resonated with me in that I think I have a similar challenge in terms of creating a wardrobe that feels like me right now, though for me it’s not so much about colour palette and more about figuring out how I can translate my me-made style into a more professional wardrobe for the days I need to be on site in my new job. I think my pledge will be to work on this in the second half of May, and decide what I can realistically sew and items I would be better just buying/thrifting. I'm hoping I can still be a bit out there but look sufficiently put together. I have just had a massive cull of my wardrobe mostly to get rid of things that don’t fit, but I also included two virtually new pairs of rtw trousers that fit fine, but that I associated with unhappy times and knew I'd never reach for. It made me feel instantly better and hopefully someone else will enjoy wearing them. X

I found this really interesting. I have two jumpers in spring colours and I love them. I wear them non stop at this time of year and this explains why. Right I'm off to go review my clothes and pack away the ones I don't want to wear even if they are seasonally appropriate. It feels quite liberating

This is exactly what I’ve been struggling with. I’m desperate to wear pretty spring/summer dresses but it’s just too cold so I’m trying to work out how I can winterfy summery clothing. So I’m thinking white long sleeved under tops and getting some snag tights.

Gotta love snag tights. I'm doing the same. Sewing colourful long sleeve tops and also looking what else I can make.

I love this reflective video. I do swap my wardrobe over, summer and winter only, due to my seasonal changes... we dont have a very long spring at all.. and.. i have a space issue, even though i use up 2 wardrobes. I too a attracted to particular colours for certain seasons white jeans in spring and summer, black jeans autumn and winter. Thanks for your video ❤

Very thought provoking, I am hesitant to wear the same clothes at home as I wear to the office. I work from home but still have a defined work/home style I think. I’ve made a lot of shirt dresses that I love but I mostly live in T-shirts and leggings so they just sit in my wardrobe until I have to go to a meeting in the office, I think for my memademay pledge I need to get them out and wear them. They’re lovely dresses so what’s the block for me? I don’t change between winter/summer although I will switch to dresses more in summer now I think about it 😂

I think you are onto something, nearly all my long sleeve tees have a black or navy base and I'm a bit fed up of them. I've sewn a few short sleeve tees for sewyellowforendo etc and it's still not warm enough for them! I bought the bright plain jerseys but again they are for summer tees which I won't be wearing til it warms up a bit! I need to look to see if I have spring tops. I might be jiggling around my sewing plans!!
