  • Ridley in Smash is something a lot of people wanted for a very long time, but when we finally got him, I was disappointed. What if he were better? Let's find out.

    My thoughts on some of the changes:
    - Proteus would be a cool alt, but I think the fully organic Ridley still needs to be the main one since that's his classic apperance.
    - Jab change seems unnecessary. I think the "awkward bite" is actually cool, it's like he's tearing off the flesh of his opponent instead of just chomping down.
    - The current side tilt is an interesting concept and something only Ridley could fathomably do, using his own tail as a knife. It's got a good serial killer vibe that fits him. The claw slam feels very basic in comparison.
    - Up tilt change seems fine. Maybe it could also have good shield damage to pressure opponents on platforms?
    - New dash attack seems interesting. Maybe the tail could also be intangible during the move so he could also use it to dodge over low-hitting attacks?
    - New f-air sounds neat, but getting rid of a fast multihit aerial that drives people offstage could have pretty big implications for his playstyle.
    - If you're going through with the f-air change I'd prefer his new b-air be made similar to his old f-air instead. Ridley without any aerial tail stabs would just feel wrong.
    - New up air is another case of something only Ridley could conceivably do (well, I guess Meta Knight as well), stabbing you with his wing spikes, being replaced with a generic slash. Not a fan. If you really want to have the reference to the blue energy slash then I think forward throw would be a better fit for it.
    - Not a fan of the new f-smash since you're retaining Skewer as his down special. Too much visual overlap for me.
    - I'm not against changing the current up smash, but that funny looking wing clap ain't it. If anything, I think a fire breathing attack like your new down smash would be a good fit here.
    - All the special changes seem good, Plasma Breath and Space Pirate Rush especially.
    - I like the changes to his throw animations.
    One thing I appreciate about Ultimate's Ridley is that he uses his whole body as a weapon but with the focus still being on the tail, his most iconic and deadly tool:
    Mouth attacks: 5
    Arm attacks: 5
    Leg attacks: 4
    Wing attacks: 5
    Tail attacks: 8
    I don't know if it was on purpose, but your interpretation seemed to retain this pretty well which I appreciate. Only the wings feel underutilized:
    Mouth attacks: 6
    Arm attacks: 5
    Leg attacks: 4
    Wing attacks: 3
    Tail attacks: 9

    1:58 I mean have you seen Ridley in Metroid. This dude is the most scrunched up ball when he fights Samus in the air or on the ground

    I think it'd be cool if Ridley breathed purple flames instead of orange just like in that one boss.

    The regular Ridley model does have expressions but he has these two stupid long teeth at the back of his mouth which cover up his smile.

    Some really good ideas and animation changes, I'm not sure how this new ridley would do in a competetive setting but the brutal damage of his moves and the danger of the new spr as well as having a proper kill throw sound promising.
    The animation adjustment and replacements are a fantastic touch and being able to stall with neutral b just sounds perfect to make him feel like his boss fights.
    One thing I'd like to see, is that like bowser, him just landing should cause a small screenshake, also maybe don't make him the heaviest character, with 4 jumps and wing blitz now being way better already makes him enough of a pain to kill.
    You mentioned "something simikiar to bowsers though guy" in the beginning but then didn't elaborate on it.
    Would it have the same numbers as bowser or be better/worse?
    Also, as much as I love super armor on spr.
    I think him having super armor on his smash attacks is busted, just keeping the wings and tail intangible or invincible seems fine to me.
    Giving all of them super armor seems counter intutive for a character who's meant to dominate in the air, which is why super armor aerials are perfect but also sufficent...actually maybe armor on wing blitz would hsve been nice, at least on the charge up.
    Speaking of air, not having air combo's hurts, as goofy as the normal forward air is, it did that job decently, neutral air too.
    I'd say instead of going for a double claw slash, make him swings his claws seperately for a 2 hit forward air.
    Also, just keep neutral air's speed as is that way you can combo better out of spr.
    All in all, even if I don't 100% agree on the changes for a competetive setting.
    I do love how you made this new rework feel, he'd be a god damn menace and fittingly hard to put down.
    All in all and despite my critiscm, great job 👍

      Thinking about it now, I definitely agree with your point about not needing armour on grounded moves given his aerial dominance. Admittedly I didn't think too much about combos and things, that's something future videos will be taking into consideration.

    The reasons Ridley’s down-air is his most hated move is because
    1) the spike hitbox is thin and precise
    and more importantly
    2) It got it over his iconic pogo tail from Super Metroid, which would’ve been more like Sephiroth’s
    The most recent common move complain for a recent character that isn’t a clone/echo fighter ( *cough* Daisy *cough* Dark Samus *cough* ), besides maybe Banjo who just feels awkward especially compared to the rest of the DLCs, and Sora for being kinda boring.
    Steve and Kazuya are just overtuned more than anything.
