Odd that 9 years later we're finally ready for Valve's Steam Machine with Steam OS. Would love to see Valve partner with Deepcool for a version of this hardware with a mini version of their Steam Castle case.

You can't. We don't know what which Anbernic handheld he traded but we can safely assume it's around $60. That's $160, and there is always the risk of the MB being faulty or going faulty after a while (which it can still do). Also keep in mind the cost of the SSD. You can grab a Ryzen mini pc for around $300 that can game. And that's a brand new full PC, with warranty. If you go on the used market, a mini-tower office PC for less than $100 with an i5, SSD (and HDD if you're lucky) + another stick of 8GB ram, and a 1650 for less than $100, and you're good to go.

Exactly this! I wonder if it’s possible to make the battery swappable like old laptops (do they even make laptops without internal batteries anymore? Haven’t gotten one in ages) and run it without the battery when docked and just pop it on when going portable.
It would be cool to see a custom 3d printed case for it. I was just thinking about how if you could get the motherboard on the cheap, you could get a really good gaming experience out of it. You could just build a mini steam machine. I don't know why Valve hasn't already done it themselves

I'm so glad someone did it, i get mine back 2 weeks ago, the repair center said there is too much water damage to fully fix it but works as a desktop, but now i can shrink it down, thank you for the idea
not the second hand but mostly broken ones price up coz of motherboard working fine display and battery doesn't matter but sometimes does if u make ur custom steam deck with parts from internet and jsuxs
Honestly even if this is just desktop steam deck, I would connect the battery either way. It still won't be a handheld but it would be portable and if you lose power from the wall, you'll still have backup to save the game or play for a little while longer.
Yep good idea - it would also better protect from power fluctuations since it's not meant to be powered directly from mains (I wonder if the random reboot he experienced was from the charger PD renegotiating or resetting for some reason). Other consoles and PSUs have lots of caps that helps with brownouts. Without the battery it might even be more sensitive to brownouts than a monitor, and I bet the wall charger assumes the device it's powering can handle a little flickering since they're typically used for portable devices with batteries.
Build suggestion: Steam Hoodie wearable. Attach the deconstructed steamdeck to a sturdy hoodie, add a pair of Xreal Airs. Wearable gaming platform, that keeps you warm on cold nights.
I'm pretty sure Valve has a good idea about all the possibilities. What they are currently aiming for is mass-adoption. This kind of device won't sell well for the average casual gamer, unlike the Steam Deck.
@@thexavier666 they can make it a decent bit cheaper than the deck, maybe 250 dollars as a price point. If they reuse the mainboard use the internal display connector for an hdmi port, and use a usb hub inside the case, it would come out well.

Though honestly I don't think Valve is going to need to anyway. Once the OS is actually available for other devices in a usable form people are going to almost immediately find the best mini-PC boxes you can buy and load it up on to get this sort of experience. Valve is potentially still losing money on every steam deck sale, they're just going for accessibility and adoption rate to push their own platform more. If they can convince people to use SteamOS on other devices rather than actually buying a steam deck directly from them it's likely a huge positive for Valve anyway.
Would love to see this overclocked, since battery power is no longer a concern. Was planning on using my deck as a set-top box like this if the screen ever breaks, but I didn't realize you could strip so much hardware.
This is literally more modular and compatible than a laptop is. Laptops don't typically work without their native screen, or only display operating systems (meaning no BIOS or reinstalling) on external screens. Laptops also really don't like to work without a battery nowadays. This used to be a non-issue, but... Neat project. The Steam Deck is actually kind of powerful, this makes it a pretty good mini PC if you pick a broken one up that isn't broken on the motherboard.
We really should remove the "being afraid of linux" stigma. Nowadays everything 'just works' unless your hardware is less than a year old or is extremely niche.

Playing around with Linux Mint 19 to 21 for some years, and there are some noticable weird behaviours with OS, DE & apps while using it as daily driver. Some of them were solved over time (officially, but some as workarounds), but some are still present. Can't say if this is still applicable to LM 22 - did not have much time to fiddle around. But - to the point - instead of saying: 'just works', it's much more safer & closer to truth to say 'you mileage may vary'.

Cool, now since you have a "useless" shell......cut out the screen and order the parts for the controller bits of the Steamdeck and see if you can make a new Steam Controller 2.0 with all the track pads and such.
The Steam Deck isnt thermally limited, its performance peaks at low TDP, as its designed to, as its a custom APU for the handheld (more silent yes! performance, not really)

Of note, the 64GB version of the Steamdeck does not have on-board storage, it has an M.2 card with EMMC, or at least my 64GB version did. Card looked weird, almost like one of those old CPUs on an interposer.
If the newer versions have 64GB on-board i might just pick one up and drop my 2TB drive in there so i can have the OS on the 64GB eMMC and be more bold with screwing around with the 2TB drive. Using my old version, with a larger cooler and a custom case, under my kitchen TV. Sure my Beelink SER6 with SteamOS proper works pretty well, but its also loud, and too larger to fit under the TV like my shield so it sits out front, i just need to test to see if the Steamdeck can run 144hz over USB-C first(the TV is actually a computer monitor B/C it was cheaper than a TV and TVs smaller than 32 inches are hard to find in 1080p that are any good). Edit, if i can get Shield/Apple TV like functionality on the Steamdeck that would be awesome.
Interesting indeed. Would have been amazing if this was the OLED board that had the wake through gamepad function. Kinda like the board sitting there as it, hope you can figure something out for especially the power button though.
Making a case so that the fan sucks air from the bottom of the motherboard and blows it out the top like the SD was designed to do would probably help with that random shutdown issue. The Power IC is probably getting a bit hot as well as everything else down there since being outside of the case completely, there is no real Airflow being pulled over it even though you have it out and with a small heatsink on it. The Chips there all need a little airflow. Otherwise yea this makes an excellent little Steam Box build and I love it.
You could maybe imagine putting it inside a display to make a sort of SteamDeckTV. I know it’s not really your area of expertise but it could be a fun project. Whatever you do with it in the end it’s a great opportunity to have just the necessary equipment to make a mini power pc
That’s pretty amazing. I’ve always wanted to create a clamshell pc that’s actually pocketable with an extended battery. Using steam deck hardware might just be the way to go.
This is a pretty cool way to get some more life out of an otherwise damaged device. I love repurposing or repairing old/damaged tech to give it a new lease on life.
I have so many time thinking about take an SD mobo like this, making a custom case and heatpipe and creating an Mini Steam Deck with 6 inch screem in the size of the Odin2.
I wonder if there is a use case for keeping/adding a battery, as the BMS functionality is built in; even a lowest-possible spec battery might be worth the operating stability. Maybe you mount this in your limo’s infotainment system! Maybe a camper van or RV set up …

Actually, I could see this as a new item for Valve to sell. They would need to tweak it for mini pc use, like adding ethernet and a proper arrangement of USB and display outs, but if they added at least a couple 2.5 Gbe ethernet ports, they could take advantage of the mini-pc home server market as well. They would just need to keep the price low and I think they would sell very well. I would be totally down to have a proxmox cluster of these for my home lab. VM's, containers, docker, NAS, OPNsense/PFsense and remote gaming? Absolutely! 👍👍

This naturally resulted in consumer confusion and ultimately rejection. Why is THIS Steam Machine $500, and THIS Steam Machine $5000, and THIS one is $1500? My kid said they want a Steam Machine for xmas... but which one is the right one? Bah, they'll be fine with one of these Xboxes/PS4s. I think an actual Valve-made "Steam Machine" capable of good 1080p to decent 4K gaming, like the current consoles, would be quite a different story in this market, given how well the Steam Deck has been received. Eliminate the market saturation from 3rd party builders, just do it in-house, keep the price to about $500 if possible, and include a Steam Controller 2 (that matches all the inputs of the Steam Deck, well, maybe not the touchscreen). Bonus points if they build in a way to use the Steam Deck itself as a controller, without the workarounds enthusiasts have been finding like using virtualhere and streaming input over wifi. *They did make 300 "prototypes" that were given away to beta testers (I am one of them) and media/journalists. They were never sold by Valve, however.
I recently got into trying AR/XR glasses, this would be amazing mod or if even Valve built a steam pocket. No screen or controller. Just the steam deck motherboard and battery in a small case. Then just connect your glasses to the usb C port and bluetooth a controller. Add a 2nd full USB C port and allow 2280 drives and it will rock.

Crazy idea, but hear me out. Buy a 18.5" portable monitor with a monitor mount (or a 19" portable TV). 3D print a case (or have a custom metal fab case) that can be mounted to the back. You'll have a travel size All In One Steam Machine that can fit in a large backpack. If you use a portable monitor that has USB Type C Pass through you could have all power through just one cord. Also make the case were You can mount a full 2280 SSD too so you can add a 4TB, or larger SSD..

@@OSON001 "just get a laptop" 🙄 Yeah that is not always the best option, and there are Bluetooth Keyboards & mice out their. That said though you would just really need a good controller to play games. You can even get a controller with a keyboard & trackpad too (Rii makes one). The Ideal use would be in a RV, a big rig camper, or for me when I'm stuck in a hospital bed. For me having a laptop in a hospital or other places I'm at it's far more cumbersome than a all in one. Also with as cheap these laptop makers build modern laptops I'd rather go this route, because I can use a better (and replaceable) travel keyboard & mouse (or a travel keyboard w/ a built in trackpad).
Would be cool to see a 3D printed case for this. Maybe incorporating a hub into the design for the ability to connect your controller and other devices at the case. also would be interesting to see some liquid cooling.
It'd be really cool to see a little 3D-printed case for this, that can be attached to a VESA mount so you could use something like a USB-C Docking monitor (the ones that deliver power over USB-C and take video and data from the PC over the same cable) and effectively make your own AiO. Might also want to add Wi-Fi and BT antennas to the case, but with those, you could effectively turn a steamdeck into an AiO light-gaming PC.
It may be something for Steam to consider is making the system modular like a framework laptop so that you can put the main board into a small case and use it as a stand alone console or put it into a shell with an lcd and then use it on the go.
It's likely other parts of the board are overheating, as there's no airflow over them. Inside the case the airflow is intentional so t hat air gets pulled over the board by the fan, there are even pieces of tape/covers to act as ducting to direct the air. With it just sitting in the open air, all that is gone.

this is basically my setup with an rog ally. I still have it in it's shell. but the screen is broke and the shell is cracked. it got stepped on and has a little bend in it. i have wanted to build a case for it but didn't know how well it would work. it's connected to a portable monitor. i want to try and using a bigger battery and sticking it to the back of the portable monitor so its still portable but more of a desktop setup
You can actually bend the heat pipes and I think it's up to 60° without affecting anything! As long as you don't break it as in crack so that's no longer sealed it will still work. 😊
could have been a minor electricity blip, and without the battery hooked up as a type of UPS (uninterruptible power supply), mayhaps hook up the battery if it happens again and see how that affects things

I did a shell replacement myself but only halfway as I knew that changing the front was above my skill level But I like the mix with a black front red back and red buttons
assuming why the previous owner sold it didn't add anything to the video. it just sounded like you wanted to call them lazy or clumsy for not fixing it. Besides that, its important to note that the fan combined with the case very carefully routed air for direct cooling on several of the non-apu parts, so cooling the shield does not emulate the original cooling solution.
would be cool with a low profile cooler in a little case, but tbh I would keep the battery even if it makes it a little bigger, it's not a bad thing to have a built in UPS

if you are willing to boot from an sd card you could use the m.2 slot to connect a dedicated gpu

this is an easy way to get a low cost pc tbh. if you need all your stuff ready to go and arent afraid of linux id give it a shot

Of note, the 64GB version of the Steamdeck does not have on-board storage, it has an M.2 card with EMMC, or at least my 64GB version did. Card looked weird, almost like one of those old CPUs on an interposer.
If the newer versions have 64GB on-board i might just pick one up and drop my 2TB drive in there so i can have the OS on the 64GB eMMC and be more bold with screwing around with the 2TB drive.
Using my old version, with a larger cooler and a custom case, under my kitchen TV. Sure my Beelink SER6 with SteamOS proper works pretty well, but its also loud, and too larger to fit under the TV like my shield so it sits out front, i just need to test to see if the Steamdeck can run 144hz over USB-C first(the TV is actually a computer monitor B/C it was cheaper than a TV and TVs smaller than 32 inches are hard to find in 1080p that are any good).
Edit, if i can get Shield/Apple TV like functionality on the Steamdeck that would be awesome.

Making a case so that the fan sucks air from the bottom of the motherboard and blows it out the top like the SD was designed to do would probably help with that random shutdown issue. The Power IC is probably getting a bit hot as well as everything else down there since being outside of the case completely, there is no real Airflow being pulled over it even though you have it out and with a small heatsink on it. The Chips there all need a little airflow. Otherwise yea this makes an excellent little Steam Box build and I love it.
You could maybe imagine putting it inside a display to make a sort of SteamDeckTV. I know it’s not really your area of expertise but it could be a fun project. Whatever you do with it in the end it’s a great opportunity to have just the necessary equipment to make a mini power pc
That’s pretty amazing. I’ve always wanted to create a clamshell pc that’s actually pocketable with an extended battery. Using steam deck hardware might just be the way to go.
This is a pretty cool way to get some more life out of an otherwise damaged device. I love repurposing or repairing old/damaged tech to give it a new lease on life.
With some 3d printing, and some more Steam Deck tinkering, you can turn it into a portable sized arcade cabinet.

I have so many time thinking about take an SD mobo like this, making a custom case and heatpipe and creating an Mini Steam Deck with 6 inch screem in the size of the Odin2.
I wonder if there is a use case for keeping/adding a battery, as the BMS functionality is built in; even a lowest-possible spec battery might be worth the operating stability. Maybe you mount this in your limo’s infotainment system! Maybe a camper van or RV set up …

Actually, I could see this as a new item for Valve to sell. They would need to tweak it for mini pc use, like adding ethernet and a proper arrangement of USB and display outs, but if they added at least a couple 2.5 Gbe ethernet ports, they could take advantage of the mini-pc home server market as well. They would just need to keep the price low and I think they would sell very well. I would be totally down to have a proxmox cluster of these for my home lab. VM's, containers, docker, NAS, OPNsense/PFsense and remote gaming? Absolutely! 👍👍

You should really consider pitching this idea to STEAM. Maybe they'll hit the mini pc market with some tweaking.

This naturally resulted in consumer confusion and ultimately rejection. Why is THIS Steam Machine $500, and THIS Steam Machine $5000, and THIS one is $1500? My kid said they want a Steam Machine for xmas... but which one is the right one? Bah, they'll be fine with one of these Xboxes/PS4s.
I think an actual Valve-made "Steam Machine" capable of good 1080p to decent 4K gaming, like the current consoles, would be quite a different story in this market, given how well the Steam Deck has been received. Eliminate the market saturation from 3rd party builders, just do it in-house, keep the price to about $500 if possible, and include a Steam Controller 2 (that matches all the inputs of the Steam Deck, well, maybe not the touchscreen). Bonus points if they build in a way to use the Steam Deck itself as a controller, without the workarounds enthusiasts have been finding like using virtualhere and streaming input over wifi.
*They did make 300 "prototypes" that were given away to beta testers (I am one of them) and media/journalists. They were never sold by Valve, however.
I recently got into trying AR/XR glasses, this would be amazing mod or if even Valve built a steam pocket. No screen or controller. Just the steam deck motherboard and battery in a small case. Then just connect your glasses to the usb C port and bluetooth a controller.
Add a 2nd full USB C port and allow 2280 drives and it will rock.
Ive been waiting for someone to do this video for so long as due to how small the steam decks motherboard is. Just had to wait for someone with a broken one

Crazy idea, but hear me out. Buy a 18.5" portable monitor with a monitor mount (or a 19" portable TV). 3D print a case (or have a custom metal fab case) that can be mounted to the back. You'll have a travel size All In One Steam Machine that can fit in a large backpack. If you use a portable monitor that has USB Type C Pass through you could have all power through just one cord. Also make the case were You can mount a full 2280 SSD too so you can add a 4TB, or larger SSD..
@@JeremyLeePotocki as someone who tried to daily drive a portable 12 inch monitor. I'd say just get a laptop. Carrying a keyboard and mouse apart from the screen completely defeats the portability.

@@OSON001 "just get a laptop" 🙄 Yeah that is not always the best option, and there are Bluetooth Keyboards & mice out their. That said though you would just really need a good controller to play games. You can even get a controller with a keyboard & trackpad too (Rii makes one). The Ideal use would be in a RV, a big rig camper, or for me when I'm stuck in a hospital bed. For me having a laptop in a hospital or other places I'm at it's far more cumbersome than a all in one. Also with as cheap these laptop makers build modern laptops I'd rather go this route, because I can use a better (and replaceable) travel keyboard & mouse (or a travel keyboard w/ a built in trackpad).
Would be cool to see a 3D printed case for this. Maybe incorporating a hub into the design for the ability to connect your controller and other devices at the case. also would be interesting to see some liquid cooling.

It'd be really cool to see a little 3D-printed case for this, that can be attached to a VESA mount so you could use something like a USB-C Docking monitor (the ones that deliver power over USB-C and take video and data from the PC over the same cable) and effectively make your own AiO.
Might also want to add Wi-Fi and BT antennas to the case, but with those, you could effectively turn a steamdeck into an AiO light-gaming PC.
Now I need Steam powered cyberdeck in my life.
It may be something for Steam to consider is making the system modular like a framework laptop so that you can put the main board into a small case and use it as a stand alone console or put it into a shell with an lcd and then use it on the go.
It's likely other parts of the board are overheating, as there's no airflow over them. Inside the case the airflow is intentional so t hat air gets pulled over the board by the fan, there are even pieces of tape/covers to act as ducting to direct the air. With it just sitting in the open air, all that is gone.

this is basically my setup with an rog ally. I still have it in it's shell. but the screen is broke and the shell is cracked. it got stepped on and has a little bend in it. i have wanted to build a case for it but didn't know how well it would work. it's connected to a portable monitor. i want to try and using a bigger battery and sticking it to the back of the portable monitor so its still portable but more of a desktop setup

You can actually bend the heat pipes and I think it's up to 60° without affecting anything! As long as you don't break it as in crack so that's no longer sealed it will still work. 😊

could have been a minor electricity blip, and without the battery hooked up as a type of UPS (uninterruptible power supply), mayhaps hook up the battery if it happens again and see how that affects things
Valve should sell these as single board computers for budget gamers. They would make money off the store. I need this!!! I only play lite games and older titles so this would be perfect.

I did a shell replacement myself but only halfway as I knew that changing the front was above my skill level
But I like the mix with a black front red back and red buttons
This does make me want to turn my steam deck into something PSP like, love the steam deck just can't easily pocket it
assuming why the previous owner sold it didn't add anything to the video. it just sounded like you wanted to call them lazy or clumsy for not fixing it.
Besides that, its important to note that the fan combined with the case very carefully routed air for direct cooling on several of the non-apu parts, so cooling the shield does not emulate the original cooling solution.
ETA Prime for 100 bucks you couldn't beat that with an eggbeater. Good buy
would be cool with a low profile cooler in a little case, but tbh I would keep the battery even if it makes it a little bigger, it's not a bad thing to have a built in UPS
