Someone may have already said this, but there are wall mount holes on the underneath, close to the rubber strip at the back of the router, there are two rubber caps. Dig those out and the you should see the mounting holes.
I have the Rapture GT-AX11000 ROG version of this and RT-AX88U as the mesh system in my house, the AX88U can be wall hung those rubber feet come up and you can mount it to the wall, I have it mounted up on the wall in the middle of my house in my Mrs' make up room behind her ring mirror light thingy, these two put together are amazing. My house is big, and you get full signal out past about 3 doors down. I have a full aluminum gate that can't be seen thought and have a wireless camera door bell mounted on a solid brick fence and it gets signal 80% signal strength and that is mounted about 20m though multiple walls and another folding solid garage door. The features on these two, plus the new ROG version is unreal I have link aggregation to my Qnap and also the same link aggregation on my internet as here is Australia the fastest internet you can get at present is 100/40 on the cable area's. So I have 2 100/40 connections set up as bonded but you can set it up for failover with a second connection or a 4G dongle plugged into one of the USB ports or load balanced. Best stuff on the market. The cost is up there to buy these two but they are both WIFI 6 ready and the features and what you can get in enterprise gear. For hard core gamer's you can set links the your gaming severs and press the boost button on the side on and it sets the QoS to your gaming servers as the highest priority. I highly recommend them, most of the JB HiFi's and Harvey Norman's don't even stock them and have to specially order them, well at the time I was buying the AX11000 ROG Asus had it to them the next day. Best money I ever spent HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Hello Tom, your review on these is spot on except for one small detail. I have had the Asus RT-AC88U for a month or so and it is wall mountable. Towards the top of the bottom 2 of the small rubber feet that look like vertical slots with a round center are removable so you can hang it. I have mine hanging on the wall behind my desk. My wired connection is 126 MBps down and jumped to 22 MBps up from 10 MBps on my old Asus 66 model.
As an AC5300 owner, I just wanted to clarify a couple things..... Firstly, the 192.168 IP address may work for the router login, but what is recommended in the directions (yes, I read them!) is to use router.asus.com Secondly, the Link Aggregation ports on the AC5300 are ONLY ports #1 and #2. I do not currently own a NAS, but in order to plan ahead to use Link Aggregation for that purpose, when I hooked up my main PC to this router, I used port #3. It may save a bit of head scratching later on :) I absolutely love this thing! I apologize if my above points were already covered, I did not have the time to read all the posts first.
If you get an Asus router, I would recommend that you flash it with the AsusWRT Merlin firmware. It looks exactly like the stock firmware but with a lot of useful features added on! I have it installed on my AC66U and I love it!
My AC 87R is over powered as hell and I have 15 connected devices. Almost all of them wireless. Gaming, VoIP, multiple 4K Netflix and Amazon streams in a 3500 sq feet house...it does it all. So if you're buying the AC88U for "a few devices" then you're freaking crazy.
I just ordered the RT-AC88U which should be delivered soon. ON your comment about it not being able to be mounted on the wall, all you have to do is remove the top rubber feet that look elongated with a circular bit.. those are just covers really for the screw mounts. The round bit is where the screw heads poke through then sort of slide on to secure the router to the wall.
i have this 88U and the rubber (not feet as you called them but the other too close to the "back" 2 antennas. right and left side of the id/FC clerification and all this, you can take the rubber stuff out and you can hang it on the wall.
The new app they now have published that works with a lot of their routers, and more is on the way, among others, their RT-AC66U is supported, I have that, is excellent. So easy to control and manage the router through whatever device you use the app on.
Wonderful review. Thank you for taking the time to do the review / and the write up. I am sold on one of them. How about a review of the Netgear Nighthawk X8 - This seems to be a beast of a router as well.
22:14 really made me laugh, brilliant! This channel is a one stop shop for tech AND parenting advise. One criticism: AC5300 costs £399! You should say that at the beginning of the video, before people get excited about this amazing router. I don't know anyone who can justify spending more on a router than what average person spends on a laptop that they keep for 3-4 years. My solution to crappy WiFi is to buy used dual band routers from ebay for around £16-£20 mark, wiring them to my network via ethernet and using them in access point mode around the house. This way I can patch all the "blindspots" where the main WiFi wouldn't reach.
Just to add to that I also have my MacMini running at 2.5gbps as that's the fastest port it has. I am guessing the next version will come with the 10gb ports for sure!
Tom, that's not a router. It's a router. Honestly... *shakes head* ... And lol, I want to buy that AC5300 just to piss off my girlfriend. Big shame it doesn't have the 8 ports like the AC88u does. I don't want to have to compromise! I checked smallnetbuilder's review (he's basically an engineer) and in the review, he states that you basically receive no benefit unless you have 3x3 and 4x4 devices and you won't see any better performance with dual band devices unless you're using a lot of them. Oh and on top of that, MU-MIMO support isn't even out of the alpha phase of testing. Also, it's £400.
+Kael Just to add, here's a quote from smallnetbuilder: "Tri-band and MU-MIMO don't improve rangeNeither "tri-band" / Smart Connect nor MU-MIMO contain technology designed to extend range. Both are primarily designed to improve total bandwidth use.MU-MIMO routers requires MU-MIMO devices and only improve throughput for 5 GHz downlink (router to device) and strong signals. You need at least two MU devices to see any benefit and you get the optimum throughput gain with 3 MU devices."Tri-band" (actually tri-radio) routers work with all devices and work up and downlink. They use two 5 GHz radios so slower devices can be directed to one radio, faster devices to the other. "Smart Connect" technology is supposed to automatically direct devices to the proper radio. But many devices don't like being told what to do and stubbornly stay on a radio, slowing down faster devices. "Unless you live in a house with a lot of people hammering the Wi-Fi, you're very unlikely to see any real world performance improvements.
Wow great review Tom, was a bit sniiffy thinking you'd be out of your depth but how wrong was I? Learned a lot thanks. Off to investigate it my switches can link aggregate.
Fantastic Review ---- I wonder a comparison between the ac5300 and the onhub. I need range - According to most reviews I have seen of the onhub it is beating $1000 ubiquiti routers at Distance covered.
The money they have been charging for home routers is amazing. They don't even include vpn over v-lan in a device that is designed for multiple connected users. I'd rather spend a few pounds more and get a draytek or any other smb class device with actual feature's you want.
I'm sorry Tom but someone had a say it... A 'roughter' is a woodworking too for removing uniform channels of wood. A 'rooter' is a device for routing network traffic. We are not American my friend! ;)
great info and video. ill will be getting this rapture ac5300 for the great range and the fact we have so many devices trying to use the stock modem/ built in router that looks like a vcr. This will help boost everyone's wifi in the house.
I went with the 3100 because the bang for buck. it reaches all over the house, but i will need a node for the very far end of the house. This video was a big help.
Router manufactures, can you please add Micro SD slot to ALL your upcoming routers as the Micro SD storage is in upwards of 1 Terabyte and growing. It is a lot more convenient to store data on tiny Micro SD card than a huge hard drive.
Agreed. totally enthralled with the review. So you are suggesting the ac5300 for apartments with thick walls? I have a small flat but lots of thick walls so WiFi signal from the asus ac1200G+ in the living room disappears by the time I am in one of the farther bedrooms. Do you think the ac3100 or 88u is strong enough for thick walls? Thank you.
Just subscribed.sir I have been looking for a comparison of both of these routers for a long time thanks for the info.cnet said if you don't have 10 wireless devises connected at the same time the 88u is the route to go.your review sounds a bit different to buy the 5300 instead.
Have ever experienced issues with it sir? I've heard a ton of complaints about this two routers and also the AC3100 about bad 2.4 GHZ connection drops and random disconnects.
Nighthawk is crap because it's made by netgear. Had nothing but issues with netgear products, ESPECIALLY when I got a nighthawk model and it dropped the wifi often. And no, it's not because of interference, the router I have now is on the same channels AND has more range and has zero problems.
I very much like that you review these things too, you probably have made me buy an ac88u :) you do an absolutely bonkers good job :D and by the way you say "router" correct :)
I went for the cheaper 86u to replace my 6 years old and just deceased DLink DIR645 N300 (water heater). The difference to 88u should not be that much but it is quite a lot cheaper. The spiderman router AC5300 is way too expensive, in my opinion, you should go better with 2x 86u (2x 86u should more or less cost the same as a single 5300) on aimesh rather than a single 5300.
Actually I want to know if I can reduce TX/Rx power for the wifi on my AC88u to be a better RFI cloud citizen, and reduce virtual competition with my neighbors' routers.
I'm not thinking to myself "Tom, you don't need to be wasting time on routers." I'm thinking "Tom, you're English, (judging by the accent, a fellow Londoner) why are you pronouncing it the American way of 'raow-ter' rather than the English way of 'roo-ter'?"
have you used the tplink archer d9? is the wireless range the same as the archer d9 or is the ac5300 way superior with it's range in getting through concrete walls?
Hi guys, I bought Asus RT-AC5300 and RT-AC68U, but their 5GHz WiFi speed (AC5300 and AC68U) are very slow than 2,5GHz. Firmware Version 3.0.0.4.384.81622 (2020/02/21). Why should I do? Downgrade the firmware?
Hi, can someone help me choose between the "Nighthawk X6" or the "Asus AC88u/AC5300". Which one would be better for a fairly large space with many walls and will deliver best performance with a fiber connection?
I am considering buying one of these routers primarily focusing on range and quality of service.... Will there be any improvement of wireless connection stability with any of these routers and of wired connection as well? As for range will the routers be good for 2000 sqft no walls? I'm approximating for walls as my home is less than that by a margin. I need a stable connection with minimal packet loss which i seem to currently have. Speed does not matter to me. I'm inclined to the rt 5300 due to a low price difference in my country of residence. Will also be great if any owners tell of quality control details( specifically overheating as i have read about it on some reviews). Thanks.
link aggregation is not a bundling of 2 netcard to get 1 "Big" nic. That's not how it works. link aggregation is when the first nic bandwidth is full from one computer, and a second computer wants bandwidth, it takes it from the second nic. You don´t get 2 gbits out of link aggregation
Link aggregation doesn't only support fail over, but also boost the connection by using all available at the same time, so yes it can accelerate the connection. But you don't get exactly 2gbits, you get 2x1gbits in parallel (because there is no crossover between the connections).
crees que me sirva para un cyber gaming y que ventajas puedo obtener a diferencia con el que me regalan la compañia. si mejora el lag, puedo controlar para que 1 maquina no se robe todo el internet para ella sola?
All routers have cooling in some way. They have processors which get hot. Even cheap router/modem combos have heatsinks on their processors. I've never seen a consumer router/AP with fans, but the reason that these higher-end routers are so thick is that their heatsinks are much thicker.
I current have the Asus RT-N14UHP and a 100Mbit Fibr connection and the average speed that I could get would only be around 30-70Mbit... The distance between the router and my desktop is around 25-30ft. If I get this router, will the connection improve?
I have an RT-AC88U router. Great router - when it works. I ran the latest firmware upgrade a few days after its release. The update went without a hitch. After the update I restarted and noticed that the 2.4GHz radio kept disconnecting devices and then they slowly reconnected. Had that happen before and I was annoyed because I ended up completely wiping the router's memory, then reinstalling the firmware with their recovery tool, then resetting the router again, then restoring the router by hand (not from backup). It was awful but solved the problem. After trying to clear the settings and then restoring them from a recent backup didn't work I ended up doing just that. So, If you have an Asus router, I would highly recommend keeping a set of settings screenshots on hand because you will need them after you update your router's firmware. It's such a flaw. ASUS should be ashamed having such terrible procedure to follow just to patch and update the firmware. Can you imagine to re-set up your computer or server after doing a software update? I can't. Shame on you ASUS!
Can someone help.. Where would be the best location to place a router? I bought the 100mbps from comcast and I need signal to my downstairs TV to stream 4k video and my computer which is upstairs and is located direct opposite end of the house from the tv? Would it better sitting next to the tv or somewhere upstairs in the middle of the house?
at the point you get to this, you are better off with using an old rig or building one for PFSense. Hell, you could build a monster PFSENSE machine with bad ass AP added that would be far more configurable and better overall. Packet shaping for example is far more effective then simple device bandwidth limits. If you want or need the type of configuring that this allows you will get a lot more for your money building the PFSENSE router.
+Chad Bremer And you still need a AP with good performance, and these Asus routers are the bad ass ultimate AP that you are talking about lol PFSense is too difficult to setup for average home users, not to mention the hassle of getting the traffic shaping and DPI to function properly. These two Asus routers comes with QOS and a functional DPI (supported by TrendMicro) right out of the box and will work with minimum settings, and I can get them to work in under 30 minutes.
timcabc there are enterprise AP'S that cost far less with the same kind of performance. The QOS is the same you get on far less expensive routers and is basic as hell. Honestly for the very high price you should get a lot more out of them.
An equivalent enterprise grade wireless AC ain't cheap and now there is another config interface to deal with. Even if an old rig does not cost money it uses more power than a regular wireless router and it cost money. And it takes huge amount of effort to setup a working QOS, DPI, parental control on pfSense router , while with an Asus router it works almost right out of the box. The QOS may be basic but it is good enough for most home users. pfSense is not an alternative for for average users, a cheaper ASUS model like AC68u is
better off with PFSENSE and setting up packet shaping so to rents get pushed back for higher priority traffic just like Web surfing. That way video, games, and VOIP get first dibs on bandwidth. When configured correctly, it is transparent to useres. You can also block stuff if you desire. IP, MAC, ports, what ever you fancy. PFSENSE is about 100 times, if not more, more configurable then any consumer router will provide. And you can build a monster enterprise class setup for what the spider router costs. lol
+Kurt Phillips Nothing a couple really good AP's can not take care of. Add powerline ethernet if normal cables are not an option and you can make it better then a standalone unit.
I need to see more AC supported devices before I dump this much money. Mostly wired in my house but if all of my devices were AC I would be into these.
Ac5300 is not Tri-band, it only uses 2 bands, 5ghz and 2.4ghz. Its a complete lie. I also find it mind blowing such an expensive router has no advance routing features
I need one of those for my gaming and steaming because my current router is doing the job still causes lag spikes and buffering on videos especially when trying to stream on beam or twitch because having that would really help with streaming games and with new games coming out It would help with streaming the new games but unfortunately I don't know how to get my hands on something like that
Initially I thought you were taking the piss with the way you pronounced router but then you kept saying it throughout the video... Is IoW so close to hamerica these days?
I would love to take the AC5300, mount it on the wall, and do some custom work that makes it look like its growing out of the wall and sucking energy from my house. lol
Someone may have already said this, but there are wall mount holes on the underneath, close to the rubber strip at the back of the router, there are two rubber caps. Dig those out and the you should see the mounting holes.
Jon Bountalas Now I need a way to color it white so it blends in with the ceiling.

Love the 'mates in a pub having a chat' type review. Well done. Refreshing.
hi sir,
thank you for good reviews about a both of router's, i want to know how much range it's giving for the each router's.
Thank you

hi may I grant your permission to share this video in my fb and my groups. Awesome guidance on routers. Kudos to you bro.

excellent review.... now i have to go buy that AC5300 router to upgrade from my crappy old netgear router
I know this is a old video and I have both of these Routers. Which one was used as your main router in your mesh set up?
Awesome review, thanks!
why are you saying router wrong

netgear nighthawk x8 vs ASUS RT AC88U for gameing streaming and fast internet full speed wish better and low ping pls help

I'm thinking "Tom, you're English, (judging by the accent, a fellow Londoner) why are you pronouncing it the American way of 'raow-ter' rather than the English way of 'roo-ter'?"
have you used the tplink archer d9? is the wireless range the same as the archer d9 or is the ac5300 way superior with it's range in getting through concrete walls?
What modem did you use with them, or rather what do u recommend. Currently have 40meg VDSL line
Hi guys,
I bought Asus RT-AC5300 and RT-AC68U, but their 5GHz WiFi speed (AC5300 and AC68U) are very slow than 2,5GHz.
The AC5300 looks like the Scathys from Forged Alliance... It wont start derping my ethrnet now will it...or rolling around the place?
I have an AC68U, I've put it on the 2nd floor but I get poor signal ground floor. Is it worth the upgrade?
oh their designed by the Brother hood of NOD dam GDI
just tell me why I should or should not buy this unit, advantages and disadvantages., cut the krap you need not 30 minutes
crees que me sirva para un cyber gaming y que ventajas puedo obtener a diferencia con el que me regalan la compañia. si mejora el lag, puedo controlar para que 1 maquina no se robe todo el internet para ella sola?
Dat moment when your router is so fast that it needs cooling xD
All routers have cooling in some way. They have processors which get hot. Even cheap router/modem combos have heatsinks on their processors. I've never seen a consumer router/AP with fans, but the reason that these higher-end routers are so thick is that their heatsinks are much thicker.
Do these high-end 'gaming routers' work with the Australian NBN?
Very nice review....Made me decide...Earned a sub...Thanks
I love my ASUS GT-AC5300, faster quad core processor and double the memory of the RT-AC5300
But without any chance to use AsusWRT Merlin firmware
I current have the Asus RT-N14UHP and a 100Mbit Fibr connection and the average speed that I could get would only be around 30-70Mbit... The distance between the router and my desktop is around 25-30ft. If I get this router, will the connection improve?
why dont you review other brands besides Asus and Corsair ?
+SinisteR BeaR I do dude, Ive just been really busy lately so Ive been prioritising.
+SinisteR BeaR Corsair have Routers ?
+Ryan Duminiet "not the brightest crayon in the box now are we?"
Does this router have fiber modem built in? As in one can ditch the bt modem and just have one device..
I'm afraid the Asus AC5300's antennas will transform to legs and it will begin to walk
Could You please measure the distance between the rubber feets on AC5300? Thanks in advance! / tibor
+Chad Bremer And you still need a AP with good performance, and these Asus routers are the bad ass ultimate AP that you are talking about lol
PFSense is too difficult to setup for average home users, not to mention the hassle of getting the traffic shaping and DPI to function properly.
The QOS may be basic but it is good enough for most home users.
pfSense is not an alternative for for average users, a cheaper ASUS model like AC68u is
Why do they always feel compelled to design these to look like space ships? It is a very adolescent mindset approach to design
which one is better?
Would this be overkill for my 40meg connection?
AC5300 has a 150 page manual.
look like it was a DUST collector! too many holes cannot clean up XD, so when will ASUS include VOIP or all in one Fibre or SDSL product?
So this router has built in blocking of P2P torrenting? How does it work exactly?
+alienxslayer Why would anyone buy a router that does that?
Uk Gamer to not get sued for copyright infringement because younger siblings torrent
***** vpn?
better off with PFSENSE and setting up packet shaping so to rents get pushed back for higher priority traffic just like Web surfing.
How Much ? Way to expensive for me.
Range of both routers please?
I need one of those for my gaming and steaming because my current router is doing the job still causes lag spikes and buffering on videos especially when trying to stream on beam or twitch because having that would really help with streaming games and with new games coming out It would help with streaming the new games but unfortunately I don't know how to get my hands on something like that
it might just be your streaming settings..... :/
I cant connect outside my nas ( AC88u) how I can?
The one on the left looks like some kind of alien helipad lol
how the price. *sorry my english bad
Initially I thought you were taking the piss with the way you pronounced router but then you kept saying it throughout the video... Is IoW so close to hamerica these days?
Thanks for the review, I have been eyeing up an Asus router for a while.
I would love to take the AC5300, mount it on the wall, and do some custom work that makes it look like its growing out of the wall and sucking energy from my house. lol
Can we stop with these Routers that look like dead robot spiders. Just give me a simple inconspicuous box with some good antennas.
Excelente video, pero puees subirlo en español. Así será más comprensible para los que somos del habla hispana.
So I have a three-floor house. Can I buy 3 Asus AC5300, one for every floor, and combine them to one WLAN?
look up cascading router (lan to lan)
Thank you, will do that.
