- The 2006 Malayalam film Notebook is often underappreciated not only for its beautiful cinematography but the storyline itself imbibes an element that is overlooked by the people. In this video essay, I am exploring one underappreciated theme in this movie which acts as a pillar for storytelling.

That was an amazing analysis of this movie.
Notebook is always the best teenage movie made in malayalam sadly underated
Awesome analysis...also I think that parvathy jumping over the fence symbolizes facing the guilt of her mistake and finally getting over it once and for all... And sreedevi's appearance is a figment of her imagination, showing that even sreedevi has forgiven her
I relate to this movie so much. Especially the character of Sarah. I too walked away from school with the intention of cutting all the ties to my past and deciding not to look back ever.
I used to be traumatized by the education system of our school which made us sever almost 10 years of friendship and sought to create emotionless robots only good at solving equations and mugging up facts without trying to develop a love for the subject or a deeper understanding of concepts let alone allow us to show empathy to our fellow students.
I really don't understand people who claim to want to become Doctors or IAS Officers to serve the society but lack any kind of empathy or understanding of their fellow human beings and even family members.
In all honesty, the teachers need to be aware of the mental health issues faced by the students and encourage them to help each other grow instead of trying to pitt students against each other and asking the toppers to cut ties with students who score less.
In my school kids developing feelings for the opposite sex or spending quality time with their friends and family was considered a sin and people who called their childhood friends nicknames after 10 th grade were considered as being "immature".
The ironic thing is that right now I'm in a better place than some of my ex-friends who treated me like a failure during High School.
To any High Schooler reading this :
The concepts you develop and the enthusiasm with which you chase after your dreams matter. Not the marks you score. Most Professional courses don't require you to score A1 in all the subjects. The 12th grade marklist holds no value after you leave school. Only the skills you develop do.
They need students with an open mindset and good ethics who can solve problems in the real world. Not a mindless sheep who blindly follows the herd without thinking about what she wants out of life.
Whoever done this well said and well explained 👌👏👏all time favourite movie
I don't think so. It was fine for such interpretations in early 20s . But in present scenario Parvathy and Roma are two different ends of a thread. Roma from a wealthy family whose father is a military officer could definitely help her to get into a top university. No issues if she got dismissed also. But what about Parvathy? She is being raised by a single mother and definitely less space for future than Roma. Getting a better life was only possible through education to her. Raising by a single parent is so painfull and often more pressuring if it is single mother. So please don't always think that education doesn't matters! It's your ‘situation ’,that matters.
Totally agreed I think people who are from more privileged background have so much choices in life but one who comes from a limited settings see life in a different lens .
True 💯
True
You are absolutely correct and its a brilliant analysis.
Though a fictional story, it would explain why pooja succumbed to mental illness.
She would have been struggling since childhood with so many issues and her education was her way out. But she had to sell her soul to protect her education and lie about her friend. Her true love for her friend and good heart made her go mad in guilt.
She had very little external means to vent her stress.
This is so true of middle class family.
This movie and your review is highly underrated man!
Could've emphasised on the importance of "sex education" too.. Yet , a marvelous video essay 🔥. Kudos to the effort!!! 👍
Indeed this movie holds a special place in my heart. What a wonderful and meaningful movie. Every character had a beautiful development. At the end of the day, it leaves a precious story. :) masterpiece ahead of its time
Amazing bro. Never thought I would see this level of analysis on a Malayalam movie.
Our future is not determined by our grades/marks. And firoz was the best example for that.
Eventhough I watched this movie several times ,I couldn't touch its soul . I Praise your effort, your channel may be lighted to enlighten lot of minds
This vdo filled my eyes with tears❤️ soothing voice , music and moreover the content was outstanding❤️❤️❤️❤️
Was looking for this kind of interpretation while the movie was captured attention because of teenage pregnancy,it might have ignored the terrible and offensible flaws in the educational system.Good work!want explanations like this which looks deeply into things.
Cheers to your hardwork, your ideas, your perceptions and to the person you are @ Filmfanatic💞
a beautiful movie beautifully explained😍😍😍😍
U beautifully narrated and I feel like see it again.
I love this movie. And this movie is so nostalgic for me. And your views , voice and background music was so nice.
Omg😭💖 I was just listening to the whole video just like when I saw this movie 😍 Well spoken💯🤩
Sera had the privelege of rich and influential parents, which has more or less shaped her entire personality of being courageous, out-spoken and not to be cautious. But Pooja was brought up by a single mother, most probably with the thought of succeeding in life through academics only - which led her to believe she had to have a spotless record.
Our decisions in life are hugely influenced by our circumstances. And more than anything they were all kids - with no real life experience. To a large extent, I believe kids of rich and influential parents mature early in life and generally do quite well for themselves without much effort - if brought up correctly.
Good presentation 👍🏻
