Just 2 things I wanted to point out about these types of foul play:
1. Even if the players don't mean to hit the other player, some of those plays are potentially dangerous, so they should warrant a red card anyway. If the referee doesn't punish those fouls, then they would just keep doing it until someone is truly hurt. For example, sometimes the player goes for the ball and hits the other player with the sole of the shoe (that has spikes on it) and that could slash the other player's skin, or if they're stepped in, it can be pretty ugly. I've seen players getting covered in blood and I've seen players getting broken bones because of plays like that. So depending on the hit, it doesn't matter if it's intentional or not.
2. The same goes for when they overreact a hit. Some of those are clearly diving and if the referee sees someone diving, they might be punished with a yellow or even red card because that's disgraceful. However, some of those are not exactly diving but they're just overreacting a foul that they had genuinely received. If someone punches another player for real and the other player overreacts, the one who punched should still get a red card. It doesn't matter the overreaction. Why? Because punching should be disencouraged. Diving should also be disencouraged, sure, but if someone punches another player first, then that player did something unacceptable first that could have been dangerous. Red card for him. Although the ref could very well punish both players in some cases as well, that is not uncommon.

We've had times where we were more tolerant on the field.
It resulted in a lot of peoples careers being ended. Some of the best players before the 2000's stopped playing at 28 or so or earlier(at a high level)
Today we can enjoy C.Ronaldo at age 36 and Zlatan at almost 40. The people who had in the 2010's the second and third most goals + assists.
Fuck people who want to go back to allowing people to end careers.
Also, flopping after a headbut is an issue? Maybe just don't start headbutting people? I don't want those people who think it's ok to react violently in the game. Want to be a "tough guy"? Not on the field.
I agree with what you said about stopping people end others career. But at the same time you'll have heated moments in a competetive sports game, let's not try to make the sport too unphysical but at the same time keep it safer than what is used to be back in the 90's.
