The ingenious EEVblog viewers have finally cracked the Rigol DS1052E Oscilloscope. All you need is a serial port cable and you can turn your 50MHz DS1052E into the 100MHz DS1102E.
Dave shows you step-by-step how easy it is, and that it does actually work.
Rigol caught with their pants down AGAIN!
I'm a student on a tight budget and bought this oscilloscope a couple months ago based on your review. I looked for a 100mhz used model but couldn't find one i could afford, and now here it is! What a nice Easter present! I wish to thank you so much and a thanks to the guys that found out this mod, and Rigol too! Awesome!
I'm not sure if it was intentional on their part, but on their DS1052E page Rigol have a link to this exact video under the "Partner Content" header.
He's much better than one multivariable professor I knew, he just kept talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic so that no one had a chance to interrupt; it was really quite hypnotic.
I just followed the instructions on the eevblog site to perform the hack - seems to work well. I had 2.05.02 installed, so I had to downgrade to 2.02, perform the upgrade, then re-install 2.05.02. Once I figured out where all the files were located (a little bit of a challenge, as the forum instructions were a bit unorganized with regard to 2.05.02 scopes), it took about 5 mins. There's even a GUI available on eevblog to automatically do all the manual steps mentioned in the video.
If I were Rigol I'd keep letting these scopes be hacked. . . For the same reason expensive software makers allow pirates to be made.
The market for their machines are big companies and government agencies who would not engage in piracy or hacking anyway. Enthusiasts however, remain enthusiastic about the product.
+cucking funt Yes right. Somebody may choose RIGOL because its "hackable". If somebody has the money will buy the expensive models anyway.
This is great news! I'm glad I was able to get most of my friends to purchase one of these recently... now they won't have to fight the higher distribution prices :) I'm sure once the distributors catch on that people are saving so much, they will raise the prices a little without much complaint from us. Thanks for posting Dave and thanks to ! I've been watching the EEVBlog thread on this but haven't updated in the last few weeks. So much has happened!
They sell more scopes specifically because they are malleable. I chose the Hantek DSO1052B because it is not only hackable but runs Linux so it's familiar.
I just got a Welec W2022A 300 MHz DSO and load the open source firmware to remove almost all of the original products flaws. The original firmware was so full of bugs and so noisy that it was no more then a kids toy. After seeing this it makes me want to get a Rigol DS1052E as a backup!
Awesome, I picked up a second hand DS1052E and turned it into aDS1102E.
There probably is a way to get unix style newlines out of your terminal emulator, but I thought I'd note that Ctrl+J is probably easier than that Alt combination. Neat hack!
Thanks! The Rigol scope is now even a sweeter deal! (If you are using PuTTY, terminate lines with Ctrl-J.)
Did you do it in purpose to make the video last 11:02?
I think he did
You can do this over USB if you don't have a compatible serial cable. Just download IOLibSuite from Agilent, install, connect usb cable from scope to computer. Scope should install as Agilent what-ever.
Start the Agilent Connection Expert from the taskbar utility, select your scope and hit "Interactive IO" button. That'll give you an interactive GPIB command interface. Just use exactly the same commands, except use "send command" instead of alt-010.
Many thanks Dave and everybody who contributed. I'll get my hands on one of these babies soon.
By the way, there should be laws against selling dumb ed down products.
@davidvro I bought one like yours before getting the Rigol and that was just a real bad oscilloscope. I'm glad I had the 60 days retunr policy and I only lost the shipping back money and got my Rigol :)
Its been my experience that Semiconductor (IC) Automated Test equipment manufacturers frequently have only a software command difference between test capabilities of internal instruments. That way they get “economy of scale” on their production floors and improve their sales by being able to offer less capability for lower cost to lower end customers while being able to recoup engineering development costs when a customer needs more features etc.
Got to try this after work today. Awsome work guys!
9 years later, how did it go?
FIXED IT! I DL'ed the 02.02 FW, reset the model/serial then, verifying that, applied the hack. WORKS. I was reading
I got a DS1052E off of eBay with the DS1102E OS already installed for $200!
Bust that! lol
@davidvro No, I did not upgrade it because I was probably going to send it back and even if the software was good enough the knobs in the Rigol are way better than the ones of the Wellec. Altough the screen in the Wellec was gorgeous.
the cheapest price for the rigol ds1052e is $880 US?
Nope. If in the US, get it from Rigol's US website for $329. For some reason amazon is charging a premium on it (395)
www.rigolna.com/products/digital-oscilloscopes/ds1000e/ds1052e/
***** if you click on the link in the description amazon is charging 880 for it there
now it just says currently unavailable from the link in the description
Dave really nice. Can the 1052 be configured for X Y inputs? Thanks
Well, they did at one time for customers who bought new scopes. Then they dropped the price of the 1152E and released a new revision of the 1052E with strongly encrypted firmware.
Actually this mod pushed Rigol to drop the price of the DS1102E to $399. Just about the same price as the DS1052E. This saved me a lot when I bought the DS1102E. And it's not a bad idea for Rigol to cripple a scope to sell at a lower price. If they had closed the firmware and made the circuit so it couldn't be modded. I'm sure they have learned this lesson.
the probes are not from the equipment.
The RP2200 probes have a bandwidth of 7 MHz DC.
Hi Dave....
Thanks a lot for your EEVBlog videos...
What brand/model of scope do you suggest me ?
I do not want a 32GHz scope (For RF i prefer a spectrum analyser !!!), so a 25-50 MHz will be way enough for me. In fact, what i need is a good digitizing scope that will allow me to record-unplug-analyse the waveform of both analog and digital signals.
So i'd like to have a scope with a high memory depth (Is 1 Meg considered large today?) with a possibility of exportation (via a SD or USB).
Can anyone suggest a suitable AC Current probe for the 1052E that works up to 20khz?
@mdmde, there was a programming manual for the PC to Rigol interface, and there were "secret" commands in there that probably shouldn't have been included for the consumer.
How did the serial crack get reverse engineered without any knowledge of the manufactured process ? I would love to know the steps involved . Dave this would make a great reverse engineer hack video .. Because they teach generic great tools in thought and in engineering process .
"Bob's your uncle!"
You upgrade to version 4, which then allows you to downgrade to 02.02.SP2. Perform the hack, then upgrade to 3.01 or even 4 again! For some reason version 4 allows you to freely downgrade the firmware. There's a post on the eevblog forums (topic is changing the rigol DS1052E to DS1102E using USB , the dummy guide)
Is serial method still working (I have 00.04.01.07.00) ?
Or I need to go with firmware replacement method?
as of October 2016, are the current ds1052e models in production still modifiable?
As of May 2017 the DS1054Z is still updateable. A friend just did his one.

@Twistx77 Did you upgrade the firmware to the open source firmware? The latest open source firmware is nice. I only paid ~$300 so i think its well worth it. The Rigol DS1052E does look like a better designed product. I would never pay the $750 or more for a new welec when i could rigol.
Did you swap probes just to eliminate that variable difference with rise time ?
Yeah any ideas if it still can be done today or have rigol blocked it???? Please Dave let us know or anyone Asap cheers
can this be done on the D model, the one with the logic analyser?,i have just brought the d version and waiting on delivery.
Is there anything that has since replaced the price point of this DS1102E considering this video is 7 years old?
Dave Thanks for the lecture and insight. Nice job
yank
Is it possible to do this with seral number 00.04.02 sp1, brought 2015 as it does not seem to work on it
Iwatsu DS-5100B seems to be a more expensive Rigol DS1102E with just some slight minor differences in their spec sheet.
I was seriously considering Rigol DS1102D for my hobby, but the fan noise turned me away from it.
No, you'd simply change it back. The change is not permanent.
I just did the mod on my scope, however the strange thing is that my scope's rise time was already 3.5nS. So basically the rise time didn't improve and the only advantage of modding it is now I could go down to 2nS time scale.
what happens if this screws up your scope-is there any way to change it back if you can't boot it?
I want to look at 425 V with this scope to repair a Fender Tube amp but the manual says 400v is limit with a 10x scope probe then later the manual says 1000 v spike is max. Who Knows??? Can I look at 425 v plate voltage? or will I blow it up?
RIP bushing. Never knew he was hacking scopes in addition to the Wii and iPhone.
Serial port? Damn my windows laptop from 2009 doesn't have one. Is it possible to do this hack through a firmware hack using a USB thumb drive?
Use a USB to serial adapter, your laptop probably doesn't have hyper term either so download REALTERM its free and its great.
Your videos are fantastic. Would consider creating a video tracing SPI and I2C protocol with a Rigol DS 1104z plus?
Do you know if it’s the same or similar process on a Agilent dso3062??
He never ever blinks...which is driving me crazy
these things are cool if you want a scope that is very small, light and portable - but with so many good Tek/HP old analogue scopes on the market - I can't imagine using one for anything serious. That's just me though.
Awesome! I've got a few that we'll change. Thank you so much!
I just did this change VERBATIM. Totally hosed it up. I can't read the serial and the scope no longer works. THANKS A LOT.
Was it hacked by the serial hack or hardware. Lynnett Walker said she bought on Aug 2012 with version 3.01 and the hack didn´t work. m confusend now :-)
Can i record data with it and then play back to make analasys?
could you do this same hack on a DSO1072B 70mhz scope. sure you would need the proper model and sn
Is this still hackable 9 months on, or have Rigol now blocked this hack in the latest models?
Hi, It is possible to do this upgrade using the usb connection instead of the RS232 ?
I wonder if this could be done with the 4 channel DS1054?
@djdehne Go to the EEVblog forum, plenty of talk about it there.
I wonder if there's hack for the 1052D (with LA) unit
Get the 1102e instead, it only costs around $30 more than the 1052e and is without the hassle of doing the firmware hack.
great, I might just buy one of these oscilloscopes just because of this video, also, how do you determine if an oscilloscope has a gaussian response or a flat response? do the manufacturers specify it or not?
I understand that Rigol is now offering a free 100MHz upgrade...
@ForViewingOnly I've found the answer to my own question: check out Dave's update video: Rigol DS1052E DS1102E Oscilloscope Hack Update
Hello, wanna ask why is my probe give me electric shock? Is there any problem with my DS1052E? Anybody has experienced this before?
Why not disconnect the plug grounding and let the scope float?
If fail power scope with a isolation Tx.
where would you find the info about the free upgrade to this device?
That sexy bench! oscope, oscillators, Fluke DMM's. All that equipment. :3
For someone fairly new to electronics I bought the rigol ds1052e, Do you think It will be worth it for me to do this mod. "Thats if it still works". I only bought the scope to learn how to use it and mess about with.
P.s the wife dont know I bought it yet lol
Now... Dave... did you just utter those sacrilegeous words that (dare i even say it hehe) that the RIGOL is better than the TEK hehe
Shame Shame Shame hehe
that's funny
but on a serious note, i agree, i'm like that as well
if a product proves to be better regardless of brand or price, then... in my eyes, it's better
cool vid dave, i like watching the old videos from time to time
does this work with Rigol DS1054Z?
Is there something similar for the DS5000 series? :D Thank you!!!
Does this thing have an output to an external monitor????
Im thinking about buying a scope , i find Owon and rigol basic models , owon SDS and rigol DS basic ones go for 300e but owon is 2x30mhz and rigol is 2x50mhz, but owon has bigger screen and some aditional functions that are otional on Rigol. but the biggest difference is bandwith . so i have a question . Can i hack Owon same as Rigol , cuz if i cant then Rigol with a smaller screen , laud fan , less options but with 3x the bendwith may be a better solution. From what i understand Owon also has more memory for storing wave's. Anyone ? Google doesnt show any Owon hacks
Oh man, it's really that simple? Awesome. You'd think they would have used a password or something at least.
Very nice. Do you know is it possible to make DS1204B from DS1104B in similar fashion?
hi, i am an university's student, I will buy an oscilloscope soon. i was going to buy the textronix tds 1022c-edu 100Mhz or RIGOL 1102E 100 Mhz, but those are almost the same in specifications and that tektronix costs the double!, please recomend me wich is the advantage of tektronix, what is what that tektronix can do that rigol cant? it is better showing the sinal?
@yoyomin hey, I just bought this osc about 5 days ago and have the 2.04 software version. So they didn't do any hardware change but just changed the firmware?? if so can you send me the firmware 2.02 pls?
Yeah, it's been over two years since this was published. I'd say Rigol would of covered their arse by now.
@miyukiTS
But isn't the Iwatsu a Japanese made scope?
@douro20 do you have a reference for such information. I am looking to purchase this and would like to know for sure.
i was thinking of getting a DS1052D can it be modded to DS1102
How about the Siglent 1052DL ?
It's been hacked again. 3.01 works now. I just did it to mine I bought on monday.
All you need is a DS1102E
WHY THE HELL DID RIGOL DO SOMETHING SO STUPID?
Simple. It was economical for them and they figured no one would be smart enough to hack it. That's a cool and easy hack.
I have a KEYSIGHT DSO1052B, anyone have any idea if this model its hackeable too?
does this still work today ?
Is it april fools? I'm considering to buy my first scope.
Just ordered one of these. can anyone tell me where I can find the firmware downloads if it comes with the new firmware?
what about the siglent version??
Looks like Rigol is likely to overprice its new best seller 50Mhz oscilloscope.
Does anybody know if this still works? I just bought a DS1052E scope and then happened to stumble across this video while looking for an online users manual (the Chinese one doesn't do me much good).
Anyway, I checked my systems info and it has software version 2.05 so I'm not sure if it is possible to hack it or not. Anybody tried this or have any information they would like to share?
Thanks
Any idea if this still works in 2014?
I was wondering that myself, but given the price difference is now only $60 ex (per Emona) these days I didn't think it'd be worth the effort (and risk of future bricking) so I just bought the 1102.
Got that, my 1102E arrived yesterday. About €90 more in Germany than the 1052E but worth the hassle. I have so many small projects that will benefit from a good scope. I also have a Bitscope 10 that I purchased about two years ago. It is a good piece of kit but the scope side is a pain to use - so that becomes the logic analyser. I wish I had seen the 1102D with the logic analyser before I spent $AU300 on the Bitscope. Oh well - water under the bridge............
This is an April fools joke right? No one is saying so in the comments but it's released on march 30th
is there an FFT Hack?
igot you bro, How much shillings RIGOL???
Wow, that's a $300 upgrade in two lines of commands. That doesn't seem very smart on their end to leave that so open.
Does this still work ? in 2016
Now Rigol set the price 1102E is $399 and 1052 is $329. Not much different already... Unless you want to purposely hack it...
+Ei Phan I bought the 50Mhz a couple years back and was wondering if if was still possible since there is no point of buying another one.
+Benjamin Isaacs still does. just hacked mine
this is just great
