Quick question: if I change the address of my loco on the main using this technique, will it mess with any other locomotives on the layout? I can only run my equipment at my local club and don't want to mess up the locomotives of it and other members
You can either program your loco on a special programming track, where your loco is the only one, or on the main line, with other locos present. There are pros and cons either way.
I havnt any experience of them, but I understand them to be a little more complex than some others, which have a set/run switch to help with programming.
Hi John. Great info. videos always good to watch. Quick question - having bought a used loco ( chipped ) for my DCC layout I can't re-address it as I don't know the already address of the loco. The seller is unreachable. I saw the loco in the flesh 'running' so I don't doubt it works ok, but can you set a new address without knowing the previous one ?
Yes, you can - if all else fails, you can reset the decoder to "factory settings" by setting CV 8 to the value 8, and then the loco will have the default address of 3
Hi John, I hope you don’t mind me bothering you, I have just been watching some of your RUclips video’s and must say it’s nice to watch a video a layman can understand. I am a complete N Gauge novice and have recently purchased an NCE Power cab Controller and a Graham Farish Class 47 with sound. The horn and two tone work on buttons 3 and 4 on my Power cab but not on the two tone and horn button. I have read the instructions and managed to get the horn to work on the horn button but cannot get the two tone to work on the dedicated button. If you can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Kindest Regards, Ian
Hi John, brilliant video, much easier to understand than the manual. Since watching your video I have changed the loco numbers on quite a few of my locos, but have now got a problem with 2 identical Dapol N gauge diesels, no matter how many times I have tried I cannot change the loco number from the default 3, I have never had this problem before, are they locked or something, its getting very frustrating because they cannot be on the track at the same time. I really need your Help!
@ 0:45 seconds, you said that "this will bring up the main MENU whilst showing "Program on main" This is nothing to do with a main "menu" but everything to do with using the mainline of your layout to program the locomotive. Remember; it's either programming on the main (entire track) or on an isolated spur better known as a "Programming track" .
What about a 3 digit number. Is it a long or short number.?..And what if you don't know the loco actual number...what is the way to get to default No.3 with NCE power cab and NCE N14K1 decoder?
Short addresses are numbers less than 127 - its to do with the number of digits required in binary. If you want to restore your loco to address 3 - factory settings - I have a video that describes how to do that ruclips.net/video/HHle7SbS_u4/видео.html
@@MessingaboutwithModels Your list of manufacturers' code is no longer available. You did not mention what the reset CV is for the NCE decoders and I cannot find it in any of the decoder instructions that come with the decoder. However I see CV17 and CV18 concern long addresses...what is required to enter 805 ?
Hi. I’ve been using a Bachmann Dynamis for about 12 years, with loco decoder addresses already changed. I’m now in the process of upgrading to the NCE PowerCab…. Question: as the loco decoders are already set to their address e.g. 7800, and I won’t need to change them once the new PowerCab is installed, is there a way a just saving the address into the PowerCab? Thanks in advance 👍🏻🚂
The PowerCab doesnt have a database of all your locos. However, its easy to recall the 6 most recently used locos - I made a video here on setting that up. ruclips.net/video/R0XQ7uVak3A/видео.html
This is programming on the main, where you have to specify which loco you are changing first. It's when you are using a programming track that you have to remove all other locos.
Really like these tips. So much easier than trying to read the manual.
Glad you enjoyed them. I really did them as a way of familiarising myself, and hope they help others.
Just changed the address of my first Dcc steam locomotive! Thanks for the help
Glad I could help!
Thank you or the video, I have now got two engines working because of you great video please do more.
Glad it helped
Thanks John
Just starting out on DCC and have the same nce power cab and thanks to your vid have no reasinged my class 42 !
Glad to help
This video was extremely helpful because I did not know how to do it
Glad it helped!
To the point and very helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, thats far easier than the instructions that came with it 👍
Glad it helped
Straight to the point, thank you!
Thanks!
This video helped out a lot. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
is the red light on the pcp panel a power light or a fault light ?
The red light is a power supply light
Red light not working, and nce stuck in voltage and cab address but won't respond

I wonder why the NCE instruction booklet specifies using the “program track” for changing the loco address? Am I mistaken?

Very helpful John.
Any advice on programming an accessory decoder such as the Hornby point decoder?
Cheers
Keith

Thanks John. I'll look into it.

I've had this issue as well - I think its because the dedicated button is set up for use on US locos, where the horn is a different CV.
Will this work for a TCS K1D4 decoder? I have tried with no success.
It should
Did you do a video on how to change the horn on a locomotive?
Works! Thanks

I have a loco with a NCE N14A0 decoder. I cannot change the loco number . Only the headlight on/off works. Any ideas how to get it running? Atlas GP40
I would reset the decoder first, to make sure it's working properly.
thank you mate

The reset CV for all decoders is to set CV 8 to 8.

There must not be any other locals on the track or you will also reprogram it.

You can not see wot. Button you are pushing in your video
