I really should pay more attention to your timeless vid C.M. These were two bikes which felt like chalk & cheese at the time imho, i thought the 465g was the prettiest and usable but that kick up the arse habit as the shock got hot, scared me enough times to get a worn 490, bit more power, harder to corner & the rear shock didnt fade as much, they were both fast characters. Many many great memories & feel privileged to ride em now. Like tractors which could turn into dragsters at the flick of a wrist. Hsrd to stop tho.thatnk you for each vid you make.🏆

Sorry- to ' have' ridden them. Modern stuff is great but no where near as pretty.

I owned a IT 490 and have to admit it was too wild for me either that I wasn't man enough

I'd take that 465 over the 490 all day long! Both nice examples though...

465 was better running , 490’s head design was well, not great. Honda and Suzuki ran the show at this time in MX

I have a YZ490, but would much rather have the WR500. Far superior chassis, brakes and suspension. 490 engine is ok with the head mod.

I had a wr500. Ran really good...good suspension but they really had a screwed up tranny....not good for all around riding such as trail...fire road and cross country...was either too tall or too low. Changed sprockets but it would only be good for one type of riding...hard to explain...liked my yz 465 much better...

@@rayjs1963 The YZ490 and WR500 engines were exactly the same except for paint color. My point is the WR frame and suspension brought the rest of the bike up to par, even if the engine was stuck in 1982.

@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443 i know what your saying but that's only partly true...the motor was basically the 490 but the transmission was a (WR) wide ratio tranny and the gearing was pretty messed up. like I said it had good power but the gearing wasn't near as good for all around riding like the yz's tyranny was. I had to drop 2 teeth on the front in order to climb the bank and go up and around a down tree without riding the clutch so much that the motor would get hot and lose power and I've been riding for over 40 years..but then it topped about at about 40 to 45 mph on the fire roads. I had the bike for about 9 years and regretted getting rid of my yz465 everytime I rode...I eventually got a 04 wr450...I was worried but they got that one right. Yes the 500 had better suspension and ergonomics but that didn't make up for the tranny problem. I should have put my 465 motor in the wr frame...

@@rayjs1963 I have a YZ490 engine and a WR500 bottom end both apart on my workbench right now. The transmission is exactly the same. Same amount of teeth, same diameter, same placement on the shafts. The final gearing is different though, with a larger countershaft sprocket. I dont have the whole bike here (Im rebuilding it it for my friend) but the transmission is the same and interchangeable. I suspect that they overgeared the bike right off the showroom floor to give the impression of different transmission ratios, but it is the same old engine with a silver paint job. His bike did have a slightly higher top speed than the 490, but that was due to final gearing, and as you said, it struggled in slow stuff while the YZ did not. He is also changing the final gearing to mine (14/49) from stock.

@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443 hey...it took me awhile to find this conversation...lol anyways after thinking about it for a bit I realized that you were probably right...my comparison was meant to be between my wr500 and my yz465. Sorry for the confusion on my side
