I had a Yamaha TY80 and then a TY250 that I used to ride a mixture of trail, trials and motocross. It was a unique bike, low seat and not much suspension travel which I needed, being not tall... Miss that part of my life in my teens and early 20's on Long Island NY. I was lucky, out the backyard of our house and right onto the Lilco power line trails that went for miles with a motocross track made from an abandoned sandpit....

One of the best opening sequences on any video ever. The music, footage, and riders taking off in the title shot... Love this!

Thanks for letting me relive a great part of my childhood. My first bike was an XL75 so seeing that XR just made me smile! My XL never saw the road. The first thing I did was pull off all the lights (except the headlight) and such and make it into a dirt bike. I rode that thing from the time I woke up until it was too dark to see day after day all summer long for several years. It was some of the best times of my life. It's so cool to see others keeping that fun, excitement, and love alive.

I just thought about when RideApart was going to make a video about dirtbikes when I was looking at the quad video for the 4th time 30 minutes ago. This is awesome, and you guys are awesome.

Also, the fact that this show does not feature vehicles that are so expensive that no one who watches it would ever be able to afford or even ever have the opportunity to drive makes me happy.

When I was 15 I raced a (new at the time) 1978 RM 125. I loved everything about that bike, from being able to here it being kickstarted a half mile away to the super short power band, to the wonderful smell of burning Castrol pre-mix.

Sold my soul at the age of 14 to go to work in a Honda / Suzuki shop. We still had 305 Dreams on the floor. Worked my first year for free. Stayed in it for over 20 years and can still be found in some of the shops I have worked in over the years. See you at Barber's this year. I bleed 2 stroke.

your description is a bit off,Yamaha did not come out with the YZ490 until 1982.
the YZ465 came out in 1980 and 1981 and the YZ400 was made from 1976 to 1979.

    I'm a Husqy guy myself.
Dad got me a 78? Suzuki RM50 when I was 5, learned me to use a clutch and ride. A year later, RM80. Rode that till I was 10.
Dad went to a yard sale and found a Husq CR390 that an old guy was selling, it had water in the case but he got it for $30.
A month later I was told to hop on (I'm still 10). I rode that bike for 2 years before it lost compression. We sold it and got a 74? Maico 250.
    Time to get another Husqy.

I remember my first ride on a two-stroke. I dropped the clutch at high RMP dropping from third to second and wound up on the ground five feet in front of the bike with some bent handlebars. It was the last time I got to ride an oil-burner.

  • @EreksonJ

They need to make a cheap, air cooled, big bore 2 stroke motocross bike. Something that is very affordable, durable, and easy to work on. Drop the high tech stuff and just make something cheap, powerful, and fun that anyone can afford to run. You know, like an entry level dirt bike.

I had to stop watching at 1.32 because of that music. These lads are riding LUXURY. When started it was 4 inch travel suspension. I still have my 1974 Bultaco Pursang here in the Philippines. It had (has) 8 inch travel. A test of the day in a dirt bike magazine said, "If you can't win on this, you can't win on anything."
