  • Ilona learning about horseback archery ❤️🏹
    ✅Desensitizing to arrows and movement of the bow and the sounds of the equipment
    ✅Shooting on the ground - sound of a soft target (hard target I will do later)
    ✅Shooting mounted, softly on still standing, walk and trot
    ✅Cantering on the line, no hands to teach the horse the job
    ✅Shooting in canter, still softly not to spook the horse
    ✅Reward the horse at every step or half step done!
    ✅Always go back to previous phrase in case of nervousness, flight, running, spooking etc.
    ✅Trying to avoid problems is better than fixing them! 💪🏼
    Note: we do not normally shoot when other horses are free on the same area but in this case our new mare was more relaxed with her boyfriend around 😁
    Note 2: this is not to focus on the actual shooting technique but to educate your horse!

    Thank you so much for this video - I’m attempting to do the same. Right now I’m still at the stage of getting my horse used to the sound of the release arrows and their impact on the target

      Nice to hear you are doing this too! Some horses take longer time than the others... with my other Finnhorse it took me 1,5 years to be able to shoot in canter without bucking and with this nice mare it took me 15 minutes... :D They are all so different! Take your time and best of luck - Katariina

    That's so awesome!😁I try to prepare my horse for archery but he always speeds up when I realise the arrow - gotta get back to the basics I suppose...

      You should definitely try it! Any stables doing it in your surrounding?

      @@LAHBA There are no archery clubs of any kind near my area. But we do have stables. I plan on taking riding classes soon.

    Very nice! How many days do you have to repeat this process?

    • @LAHBA
      @LAHBA  3 года назад +4

      As long as it takes! When the horse feels absolutely relaxed and has no reaction to shooting, arrows or the sound of the arrow hitting the target, you can proceed. :) Sometimes it takes a looong time, with some horses less, but the more you take care not to spook the horse even once the faster you eventually get there. - Katariina

      @@LAHBA Are you using lower poundage bows at the beginning to have softer sounds?

    • @LAHBA
      @LAHBA  3 года назад

      @@esoel you can use a soft beginners bow for this or just a shorter draw, I used my regular #29 with just short draw. I have also a Snake bow (about 19# at 28”) for teaching horses 🏹

      @@LAHBA thanks for the answer, could you correct one more observation? What I picked from the video, is that sometimes a pat is enough and they don't need a treat after every arrow, is that correct?

    • @LAHBA
      @LAHBA  3 года назад +1

      @@Ayce47 depends on the horse, situation and the system used with that horse :) I use ”clicker” for positive reinforcement to mark exactly what was good - Not the device it’s clumsy but I have a vocal sound which is different for all my horses. Clicker & candy is very efficient! It is true I did not click + candy on the begin of the video on one arrow, she did not care about shooting on the ground 😁 on the back i clicked & gave a treat every time after the shooting.
      I will proceed from here: she needs to canter further to receive the treat and slowly proceed on the actual track abd multiple targets. :)
