  • We've known for a while now that Scythe is done. Jamey has done everything he wants to do with the world of 1920+. No more expansions. No more accessories. No more promos. But is that really the truth? Jamey asks the Scythe Facebook Group, "IF" he were to revisit the world of Scythe, what kind of game would we want? The community had some ideas and I'm here this week to discuss it.
    If you could have another Scythe, in any game style you'd like. What kind of game would you ask for?
    Thank you for watching. If you like what we're doing here at The Mill, consider liking and subscribing, if you aren't already. If you are already subscribed, thank you so much for inviting The Mill into your RUclips feed. Your feedback and encouragement are very much appreciated.
    Transparency Statement - This channel is sponsored by Stonemaier Games. This isn’t a review channel though. Jamey has made it VERY clear that Stonemaier Games doesn't pay for reviews. I am not a reviewer. I am passionate about Stonemaier Games though, and they sponsor me so that this fan-focused channel can exist. I create this content on my own, and while Jamey may occasionally watch these videos, he doesn’t review any content in advance. There is also no guidance in terms of what games or topics I should cover. I want to be as fully transparent as I can, so if you have any further questions, please feel free to post them in the comments.

    Scythe Duel sounds very, very interesting!!
    Post edit: several factions to choose from, central and lateral objectives, more fighting and interactions between players and workers placement, different types of troops and mechs, tactical and changing mechanics, oriented to tournaments but with a good duration of games, an art and components worthy of Scythe. .. I would love to see that wonder.

    Scythe already plays 2 players... but, personally I think it could be very interesting to see a greater focus on that contrast between the Civilians farming and working, and the Soldiers with their Mechs. Possibly a small campaign game where you play out a story over a series of battles, with choices along the way (I’m thinking like the basic format of Arcadia Quest, as a 2-5 player game, like all Stonemaier games)... maybe incorporate deck building into a more detailed combat mechanic, showing off that beautiful art and representing your progression between scenarios in the campaign. Heck, why not make the campaign play out as a zoomed in view of how Scythe actually plays:
    Start with the farming game... Scythe themed Caverna / Agricola...
    move to manufacutring, maybe building improvements, maybe constructing your mechs...this could be where you choose how to specialize your faction in future games.
    Build up to exploration, where you uncover new lands, recruit specialists, and train your people... maybe discover the factory.
    Finally we get the mechwarrior game... strategic combat, with what limited resources you created for yourself in the early games.
    The overarching goal of the campaign may well be the same... be the most popular faction, who controls the most land, earns the most money, maybe occupies the factory, but in essence is most successful, will win. Most importantly, like in Scythe, it should be up to each and every player what path they follow to victory, allowing for that “star system” of marking off various achievements as they work their way towards victory, but also giving players unique abilities, technology, resources, popularity and military power that unlock as they achieve those various goals.

    Maybe I should make this comment somewhere Jamey will more likely read it, but a couple thoughts came to mind while you discussed "Scythe Duel".
    1) Agricola did this kind of thing by primarily focusing on one aspect of the original game (animals). It doesn't necessarily have to capture all of Scythe, just something core to Scythe. Rivals for Catan is another great example of focusing on a piece of the game and the theme, but making a different game that is great!
    2) A Few Acres of Snow is a 2-player war game with a core deck-building mechanic (as I recall from my one play several years ago). Could Scythe Duel follow a similar model and bring all three desires together?

    Considering the artwork is such a big thing in Scythe a deck building game makes sense. Maybe with large cards kind of like dixit, so Jakubs art can really pop.
    edit: also Scythe as a game dominates the table so it would be good for the card game to have a dominating presence as well :P

    So, since Scythe is mostly a Euro game set in Europe, there could be Scythe 2, mostly an Ameritrash styled game set in America :)

    • @TheMillShow
      @TheMillShow  2 года назад +1

      I've seen that same recommendation surface several times. What does America look like if Europe had mechs in 1920? It's an interesting thought experiment. Jamey seems very, very adamant that Scythe as we know it is done, but I'll wish until Stonemaier closes their doors, hopefully a long, long, long time from now.

    • @Witchking27

      @@TheMillShow Hmm, it wouldn't really need to be called Scythe, since that word represents what the game is about. It could be set slightly later, like end of 1930s, where certain faction (Saxony) goes overseas using advancements in airship tech maybe :) Rest of factions could be new American ones. Game could be more focused on aerial and naval units with mechs mixed in but less critical, makes sense historically given the US and Germany advancements in tech. Conflict may be focused around fresh water source control (Great Lakes) because of industrialization and nations ruining ecology.

    • @TheMillShow
      @TheMillShow  4 года назад +2

      @Aaron - I think I'd want to see something new mechanically. Short of new powers, I don't know how a new map really makes it 'sequel'. What do you think could be added or changed to make a trip to America worthwhile?

    • @aaronhanna7881
      @aaronhanna7881 4 года назад

      @@TheMillShow I agree that if it were just a new map, it wouldn't change much. For it to really feel different enough to warrant a new game, the core action-selection mechanism would probably need to be revamped (think three rows /dual bottom row actions and interchangeable columns). With it being set in a different location and possibly slightly different time period, it's really a blank slate for lore and mechanism integration. I could see things like an abandoned capital and an active mech factory being interesting opportunites for new mechanisms. (I use mechanism instead of mechanic, sorry)

    • @mdmccu2
      @mdmccu2 4 года назад +3

      The Mill i thought about this in regard to the original game - why is Europa so isolated? Why no American presence? The simple answer - they were isolationists themselves and there were far more factions at play in the new world. So I’m thinking story wise, the civil war ended with not only a north/south divide, but an independent Texas nation state, a Polynesian Californian faction, a Native alliance to the north, an Alaskan power from the northwest, and a Spanish presence from the south. Those seven factions are all vying for political control of the Capitol, a massive city where modern day Kansas would be, and where government was moved when the US became more isolationist before their civil war. Post war, it has power and influence, but no one has been able to gain enough control to rule the continent.
      As for mechanics, why not limit movement to preexisting train routes? So instead of direct mech movement, you have trains routes that cover the board and when you place a “mech train” it can move around the board in a limited manner, utilizing workers and combat but not necessarily being able to go exactly where you need without planning timing.
      I think an influence track to gauge politics could be a nice switch up from popularity, and it could be utilized differently per some of the fan expansions. I’m sure the community could come up with lots of ideas.

    • @aaronhanna7881
      @aaronhanna7881 4 года назад +1

      @@mdmccu2 Utilizing railroads sounds like a good idea. I don't think units (at least most units) should be restricted to railroads, but they should increase movement speed, like in civ. I also don't think the map should include the whole U.S., but only a small portion. My idea for lore is that the civil war didn't really happen, and instead a revolution took place around 1905 where Confederate revolutionaries joined forces with Socialist revolutionaries to topple the old regime and split America with an uneasy peace. (Think Europe after Ww2) Washington would be mostly destroyed during this coup, and the old government exterminated. The Texan republic could be a thing, along with the native coalition. If the map we're to include the whole US, the Pacific states could be a togawan colony, and since Russia owned Alaska for a while, it would make sense to make Alaska Rusviet. Perhaps some Americans saw what Tesla was doing in Europe and made their own factory in the west Virginia area, and kept it running through the revolution (and would still be active when the game starts).

    If there was a new game in the Scythe world I would want it to be a NEW GAME in the world of Scythe, not Scythe on a new map, that's not a sequel imo.
    Having said that I love SM Games so I have faith they would do a sequel justice.

    If he is talking about a "deckbuilding" game in the normal sense, then it would be less like the Marvel LCG (Limited Card Game), and more like Dominion. The difference is that in an LCG you construct your deck before you play, whereas in a deckbuilding game you are constructing your deck during the course of the game. See games like Dominion or Ascension.

      And I'm 100% a-okay with Scythe remaining that way. I don't see the need to expand the story away from eastern Europe. @@dnaseb9214 - My issue is the Americas are so huge that I don't think it would work as well as the map of Scythe that we have, so IF we were going to entertain this idea, then I'd like a fictionalized Americas map where we can have Canada, the United States, Mexico and South America all represented in some fashion. Though, honestly, I'm pretty happy with Scythe staying in the setting it's in.
