You are right of course, just wish I had listened more while you were here on earth with us. My heart goes out to your family and loved ones, you will always be a source of encouragement and acceptance for us....
I thought I could not join the facebook group as I am female and do not possess any gear. This video made me join, and I certainly have not regretted it, although I am more of a wall flower. Cal was soo inspirational, and so good with his words. Please never delete the channel, these videos are time less and his message will always be relevant. Miss you terribly!
Been there and still there now, I have very little leather gear but the leather gear I have, I love it and enjoy wearing Leather. I have joined a leather club and the Guys are so AWESOME and patience with me even met a Booted Friend that has the gear and has encourage me to stay and meet other Leather/Booted gear guys. Now I go to Leather events in my area meeting other leather gear guys and it is amazing. Now I have a small but growing leather gear and boots and I LOVE IT !! I encourage others too to Break Out of the shyness, Break Out of the fear, and break out of the mold and step out in Your gear and embrace it, enjoy it, love it. I do.
Well said Cal. Sadly there are still a few in the various gear communities who will dismiss those who don't have much or the "wrong" gear. They seem forget that the key thing about gearing-up is all on being yourself, comfortable in your own skin. I've noticed at gatherings that a well worn second hand jacket and gloves with the right attitude can sometimes look so much better than £1,000 worth of leather gear worn without enthusiasm. And it will get you noticed.
the few leather jackets that I have I keep well cared for and clean and guys say that it looks brand new. I wear them with a pair of tall riding boots, and folks love it when they see me wear it.
You are correct. It is the love and thrills you get when dealing with like minded people. Not the gear itself. And yes it does take a life time to acquire the leather gear. After I had all mine stolen, I had to make a decision about getting more of it. I couldn't afford it so I learned the skills to make my own gear and it changed my life forever. Keep up the great videos.
Hi Cal. I think the most important thing is your passion and what your heart think of to become that “particular person”, i doubt gear is an icon for us to seek same person to communicate? Yeap, connection! 💪
When I was in my teens I had ideas of what I wanted to do, commercial diver, have an auto/m/c restoration shop, or be an actor/singer/dancer, with a side of auto and m/c racing. Did the m/c racing from 12 to 18, car racing still do occasionally. I had a friend who's dad had a commercial dive company, so I learned that, but truth be told the dive gear was a huge draw, especially Mark V style hard hat, in it for hours during training, but decided on a restoration shop, opened at 19, in business 50 years. I had acted since 12, learned ballet and nearly all forms of dance since 13, and sang in many of the productions I was in. The worker/friends knew restoration well enough I could take time and perform acting/song and dance, and help start our own theater company in the early '70's that's still going strong.. I took time off and went to L.A. to see if I could make it professionally, I had a couple of contacts that got my foot in the door, but I had to open it. In a short time I was working on stage, doing some ballet and working in film at two major studio's. Was also doing resto work there, through that and acting was fortunate enough to make many friends including some celebrities that were also still real people. But, if you live a full, vibrant life (which I highly recommend), you can get hurt, emotionally and physically, m/c wrecks, car wrecks that doctors said would paralyze me and damn near did, but I like proving doctors wrong, so kept doing and living, I did have good docs for the series of back surgeries, knees, shoulders, and more, and the concussions, ten, as far as I can remember, the last two took away my entertainment center, can't remember how to play the musical instruments I played, can remember acting and song, but my beloved dance, is gone, I can remember what I did, just not how to do it. i've had the three people I loved most in the last 60 years die in my arm's, and too many dear friends joined them. Even though I can't do some of the things I did I still know and enjoy the groups I always did, I'm in my 70' now, but that's okay, I never got past 19 mentally. All my friends say 've lived several lifetimes, but hope to have a couple more. Don't Be afraid to get into leather (it feels so good) or anything else you want, go, do, be, experience every second. LIVE!
Loved the cal rider videos just getting into them tragic loss gay or straight makes no difference to me beautiful man ..... pissed off God always takes the good ones
THANK YOU, I needed that confidence boost! Can I ask a question? I want to get a short sleeve leather shirt (it's the only thing I'm missing for the whole leather outfit) the "police" style, which I believe I saw in one of your videos, but I JUST found your channel. What do you guys suggest for a shirt, cow or lamb leather? I can't find much info or suggestions. BTW, scuba/wetsuit is my next adventure, that's the only thing I don't have any yet.
I feel like this all the time. I love leather, but I'm a big guy and I can't fit into any of the gear. I see pictures of guys on Instagram and it makes me very sad because I can't look and dress like them unless I lose at least 150lbs. I worry about about being judged and ridiculed by the community because of my weight. I have really low self esteem. It's a real problem for me...
I started working out as a teen, had abs and muscles and stayed with a 32 inch waist until I was 37. I started taking care of my Mom, she declined for 21 years, the last 7 I took care of her 24/7. Cooking for her, I gained weight, eating the same food, my main exercise became helping her move around, I gained weight to 397 pounds. I have a friend who weighs over 500, and loaned me his leathers bought as he gained weight and size, so I thankfully never stopped wearing leather. After Mom died, my friends had a 'coming out ceremony' for me, nearly everyone (about 30 people) in full leather, and all weights. I instantly felt comfortable wearing leather at that weight. Since Mom passed in 2007, I've worked out again, and eat right, I've slowly lost 157 pounds and have a 36 inch waist, I'm 71 and losing weight til I reach 32 waist again. I'm also in a wheelchair (last 2 years) until docs fix my hip, still work out, still wear leather, and don't worry about what I look like, hope you can too.
Hi Cal. Thank you so much. I would love to meet you someday. I suffer from those insecurities too. My prob is I love uniform. I have a huge collection. But I have the body and build of a 12 year old. 25" waist, 33" chest and 5'5" tall. This leads me to feel rejection. But let me tell you my mind is an incredible place. It is very difficult to communicate that though. Any further advice?
Cal Rider doesn't even look old to Me! Like with any organization even in a social media group such as Gear #365 You've got to have guys who have gone that distance longer or greater in their Gear #365 journey than the rest of us. In team sports, for example, the coaches are usually older than the rest of the team. That's just how it is with the teams with a winning record. ...
If you want an ultimate dive gear experience, a tv station in New Hampshire, through Dive Task, allowed the reporter to dive in full hard hat gear. The Dive Task rep asked anyone viewing to contact facebook.com/divetask.nh if they wanted the experience of diving in full hard hat gear, they want to give the experience. Also, from past communication, you know I wear leather nearly all the time, recently , from a wound on my foot I had to have part of my foot amputated because of infection, I wore sweats before the surgery, i had to have a infusion line from my arm to my heart for heavy antibiotics, I had to go into the ER because the line stopped working, wearing full black leathers. The problem was taken care of, but I was there many hours, of the male ER staff I saw, ALL of them asked where to get gear like mine, about 20 men, and four female nurses asked. As good as you look in gear I'm sure you get asked a lot also. If you get a chance check out the hard hat gear chance, you're probably getting more comfortable with the dive group, check for old school dive gear meets on the west coast also. Peace and love, man.

Very nice. Supportive and encouraging.
Does anyone remember when "gear" was an adjective? Around when "Georgie Girl" was top of the charts.
You.re soo right! What a powerful message! I have been holding back as I do not own any gear, but I will join in now.
Love the message and for a confidence boost I was looking for and i like your leather
