Dancing Queen bass cover

- The original bass part on Dancing Queen by Abba was played by an incredible bassist called Rutger Gunnarsson. There are some really clever and accurate covers of his bass line available elsewhere on You tube, but this one is mine. I think it is possible to get a bit too fussy over every little touch on the strings (and also I'm old and my fingers don't work like they used to!). Basically, as long as the notes you play fit into the song, it doesn't matter if it isn't exactly like the original, so I did this.
The song was a massive global hit in 1976, and is a track from the Abba 'ARRIVAL' album.
Hope you like it :)
Ibanez SR 300 bass strung with flatwound Fender 9050M's
don't know her but love this lady! Playing under appreciated music and showing the talent it took to do it
Wow! Thanks you so much :)
I wouldn't say Abba is under-appreciated by any stretch, but I agree she is an awesome bassist.
You are right because I was about to pass right by it. VERY Nice bass work
This is roughly the 5th bass cover I’ve had the privilege of listening to... this lady plays it straight and faithful. She is by far the most accurate, measured and consistent bass cover artist I’ve ever seen and heard on RUclips. She plays the classics with ease and zero mistakes, at least none that my middle-aged ears have been able to pick up.
I played this on my iPhone and was impressed. I played this with a subwoofer system and passed out! Just perfect!
Awesome job sarah. Rutger made it look so easy.. Until you reach.. 'Having the time of your life' .. Thats when you realise the man's genius
Thanks very much. Rutger was a genius for sure, an amazing bass player who was very under rated during his life; seems its only recently that people are beginning to appreciate how amazing he was.
"As long as the notes you play fit into the song, it doesn't matter if it isn't exactly like the original" - Couldn't agree more, Sarah.
Who wants to hear an exact facsimile, anyway? Your interpretation hits the spot!
I almost took this video down a while ago because I wanted to re-do it, but I think I'll just leave it there... warts and all :)
Glad you liked it, thanks.
Ma'am. Thank you for doing the song. That too perfectly.. Of all the guys ruling the Internet, you stand out.. Please keep up the good work.
Thank you, that's very nice of you to say.
Wow, seriously?!
Thanks very much, its really great to get feedback like that.
To answer your question, I got my first bass in 1974 but didn't really start trying to play properly until '81. I gave up in '84 and didn't play again until I got a Jazz bass as a gift for Christmas 2009. Been playing since then, so basically on and off for 39 years, but in ernest for about 3½.
Wow, thanks very much!
Its a really complex bass line, and I used another RUclipsr's work as a study guide. If you haven't already found him, check out the Abba bass covers by Bassowman. He's just superb, and I have learnt a lot from watching him.
Respect to you for respecting others. I enjoy your video.
This tune brings back great memories.if it wasn't for your video I would have forgotten it . brilliant job again .
How could anyone forget Abba!! Glad you liked it tho :)
Awesome cover of a criminally underrated bassline. The funk is all in the feel, and you've definitely got it.
Wow, thank you! What a great comment.
Its not criminally underatted.. I hate when people say that baseless stupid comment.. its a very popular base line.. has been since 1976 and still to this day... how many other base lines have stayed relevant that long. Rethink your comment.
Very nice...and good form. Thanks for the inspiration.
+Eugen Simon If I have inspired you, that's great. :)
Well, I tell you what, I've seen alot of the fellas do this great song here on the You Tube stratosphere, but NONE of them come even CLOSE to the level of interpretation, style & class you humbly bring to this beautiful composition. Oh yes, most important, if the Fabulous Four ever get back together for a world tour...now that the Great Gunnarsson is gone...well, you know where I am going with that! Best to you Sarah! - BCRadio
Wow, thank you! As comments go, that's about as good as it gets.
Can't see me ever being as great as Gunnarsson though, but I can try 😏
Yes, Rutger would be proud of you, Sarah. I sure am!
I was 16 and in high school when this song hit. Back then, as a guy, you didn't really go jumping around saying you liked ABBA. Now I'm 55, and there are so many classic ABBA songs that I love to listen to, this being one of my favorites. What a fantastic cover of this bass line Sarah!!! Thank you. I really enjoyed it.
We're about the same age then; I was 15 when this song was a hit (but it was OK for girls to like Abba) . Their songs are among the most amazing every written, and they had an amazing bass player in Rutger Gunnarsson.
Thanks for your comment; I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Right on, Sarah! Great track
great feel and groove besides the right notes. never too old to rock!
Thanks very much. Nope, never too old :)
This just randomly popped up in my recommendations today. Ma'am I have to say, you got wonderful groove. Never mind those couple of quirks on the high strings fills, what's important is that you have great feel, and that's what bass is all about. Put a huge smile on my face. Rutger Gunnarsson was a legend, and you honour him well! God bless.
Ah thank you! Not sure what 'quirks on the high strings' you're referring to though; I tried to play it as I heard it, but I accept that its probably not 100 correct.
Glad you liked it though, thanks :)
Great job. Really captures the RG style.
Thanks for celebrating the work of the great Rutger Gunnarsson. This is an outstanding cover of his great work. Great tone too! 👍😎
BRAVO x 1000000000!!!!!! I keep watching and saying "damn!!" The phrasing and tone is just nails. You take a few liberties but it just makes the rest shine even more. Love it.
Thank you! Liberties are there to be taken!!
Wooo! You play it like a pro. Good job!
Aww... thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Ok, love these song choices. Great bass parts and overall musicianship on those tunes.
Thanks. I just pick songs that were part of my formative years.
Really awesome, this really is not as simple as it seems.
I have told you before, i love your bassplaying..
BIGeSTRING
Ah, thanks so much. You're so kind.
Old Swedish disco can impress a (still young) Norwegian rocker when the 'extremely difficult to play' bass-line is performed like you do here! Awesome Bass job, very enjoyable to watch this video!
Glad you liked it. Rutger Gunnarsson put in some amazing performances with ABBA. I was always a goal of mine to try and learn some of his beautiful bass lines.
Such a lovely, fluid approach to the line! Thanks for posting.
+sthita1 Thanks for saying so. Much appreciated :)
+Sarah Jones
You're most welcome, Sarah. Your silky cover made me realize I've been over-emphasizing tight and punchy in both my practice and performance, enjoying that technical discipline. Tight and punchy can be wonderful, and exactly what's needed on occasion -- but your rendition provided a much appreciated reminder that I'd be well served to re-embrace my roots. The sound that initially made me want to play bass was that smooth, silky, Jamerson/Chuck Rainey BUTTER. So thanks for being the catalyst to getting me back on track, and true to myself. (And my band mates and audiences thank you as well. Ha ha!)
All I have to say is........WOW....that was awesome!!!! Well done!!!! You sounded absolutely great!!!!
Thanks very much. I'm glad people are still watching this :)
Sarah, yo también soy tu fan (I´m your fan too) y me encanta la forma en que tocas el bajo. Saludos desde Santiago de Chile!
Excellent playing Sarah! This has to me one of the more challenging bass lines I’ve ever played in my 30 years as a bassist. But then again, most of Rutger Gunnarsson’s lines are that way.
There's a lot going on there for sure, but Rutger always made it sound so effortless.
You win!! Best bass cover of this on the internet.
Really? I've seen some far better and more accurate covers out there, but thanks.
I'm just glad you liked it :)
Love it. Great job!!
Thanks. Glad you liked it
Thank you. I love playing this song
Today, I payed your bass part of Dancing Queen. I enjoy it a lot. When I listen the song, I'll try to separate all the bass component but in some parts of the song is difficult, now I listen completely, Thanks.
Just about the best cover I've heard, relaxed and it just flows. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Thank you for watching, and for your lovely comment. Glad you enjoyed it.
You have a natural free flowing talent. I just love the way you played this one. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your comment. Its good to know there are people who appreciate my playing :)
Increible! impresionante!, superlativo! mis felicitaciones!!

Now we know what Mom gets up to when the kids are in school.
Mike Roberts melho ainda na voz de banda grafith
jajajajajajaa
At last after nearly forty years the bass lines of Rutger Gunnarsson are coming to the light . RG ,RIP
Rutger was the man!!
I love it!!! Thanx for share your covers!
+SantiRdz98 Ahh...thank you so much :)
nunca le había puesto atención al bajo, y se escucha bastante divertido....
Excelente presentación....
Great job! Lots of bass in this song. One of my favorite songs of all time!
Thanks. I wish i'd done a better job on it now; I never imagined it would get so many views!
It sounds good the way it is.
Well thanks. I thought so too, until I saw a clip of Rutger Gunnarsson playing it and then I realised how far wide of the mark I was.
I saw the clip of Rutgar Gunnarsson playing Dancing Queen. I didn't know he played on all of ABBAs recordings.
He didn't play on all of them, but he certainly played on the vast majority. However, some of Abba's hits featured English bassist Mike Watson, who played on SOS, Waterloo, The Winner Takes it All, Mamma Mia and Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (a man after midnight). But Apart from these few hits and some album tracks Rutger Gunnarsson played bass on everything else Abba did.
Impressive bass playing! Wow!
Thanks
Very nice, S!
You helped me learn the tune. Thank you.
+Larry George You're welcome. Glad it helped :)
That's a lovely bass and great tone, wonderful cover!
Thanks. I actually sold this bass a couple of years ago. Glad you liked it though :)
Just as good as Rutger Gunnarson himself ! 🙏 Wonderful job, don't give up ! 🤗
Beautifully done. Thanks so much for posting this vid.
+Tom Caswell My pleasure. I'm glad you liked it, thanks :)
I've heard no better cover of this on RUclips. Nice work. -Mike
Great job!!! Love your videos,
nice bassline, very good job in the bass!!!

Thank you so much :)
Great job Sarah!! Nice performance of the amazing bass lines. Love it!!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it.
You played this perfectly! Very talented!
Well thank you! :)
very nice performance! and you really made your own version of it. All you need to find now is a band that's up to the job of playing and singing the other parts :-)
Thanks. Unlikely that I will join a band....but never say 'never' !
I congratulate you. We all know it is not easy the exquisite lines of the great Rutger (for many reasons). I am always excited to hear ABBA. Thank you.
I absolutely love Abba, their bass lines were always amazing. Rutger added a special magic to their songs with his brilliant bass lines. Glad you enjoyed this one, thanks.
Sarah Jones
You said the right words. Thank you.
Great job, Sarah! I´m trying to play this song and you will be my teacher. Congratulations!
Amazing! Good job.
Great music, great interpretation of it. Love it.
Thanks. I tried to keep as close to the original as I could.
You are a HUGH inspiration!! Rock on girl!
***** Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed :)

+Henrique Luz Wow, really? Thanks :)
I love your playing on this... Great job!
Thank you :)
Precioso tema y una impecable interpretación. Un saludo cordial
omg you're amazing! I learn a lot with this video, and get some inspiration, thanks! 💖
Thank you, Jesica. Glad you found it useful.
Great playing! Accuracy is perfect, like Rutger Gunnarsson did.
Very good cover ! Congrats !
Thank you! :)
Glad you liked it; I hope the video helps :)
pretty accurate - well done!
Thanks very much :)
Amazing Cover!
+Diego de Souza Machado Nice of you to say so; thanks. Glad you enjoyed.
Muchas gracias. Me alegro que te haya gustado :)
Who knew that ABBA had such kickass bass lines?
Oh, that's right... It's why I'm here in the first place lol
Oh yeah! Their bassist was a guy called Rutger Gunnarsson; he was an incredible musician. Abba's bass was always fairly well buried in the mix so you have to listen hard, but pick any Abba tune you like. And just listen to the bass. :)
Great cover. I play this too. Genius bassline
What a wonderful, wonderful cover!! Beautiful, fluid playing and you absolutely nailed the feel...and that's *not* easy! I absolutely love your tone here too! It's all coming from your hands, of course, but that being said, those flatwounds sound amazing!
Thanks so much. I'm just happy that so many people enjoy this video
Marveleous performance Ssrah, I love it !
stephan ten brink Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Nicely executed Sarah!
great sounding bass. Enjoy all your demos
Thanks. I kinda wish I still had this bass sometimes, I agree it does have a nice tone.
Wow! Excellent job, Sarah!
+kenzyou2be Thanks so much .
fantastic cover. well done. I'm just trying to learn this
Absolutely splendid! Bravo!!! A massive ABBA fan here who has also just ordered his first bass (NEVER played one before but want to give it a go!). And this classic will be a top priority. Probably being very ambitious as an absolute beginner, but will stick at it, no matter what. I've managed to get hold of the score from another bassist on here, so at least that's a start, lol. (I normally play piano/keyboards, but fancy at least a dabble on bass). How long, approximately, did it take you to learn this? Anyway, thanks again for a wonderful bass take on one of the best pop songs of all time!!! Very inspiring!!! 👍👍👍
Absolutely marvellous,
Oh thank you!
Absolutely love it Sarah!
Thank you!! You know, at one time I was considering taking this video down and doing it again because I was never entirely happy with it. But its had so many views now, I think I should just leave it as it is!
nice job Sara....nice and fluid ...love the accents!
Sarah, I am a drummer, I impressed with your performance, must appreciated
Bravissima signora grande talento da vera musicista i miei complimenti..!!!!
grazie mille. Sono felice che ti sia piaciuto :)
Damn! You are awesome.
This is coming from a guy who plays bass in a band and used to think he was a pretty decent bass player (until I saw what you can do!)
I love it.
Well thank you so much! I'm in a band too, but sadly we don't so any Abba stuff (yet), so I don't get to do this stuff at gigs. Don't put yourself down though, I'm sure you are every bit as good as you think you are; I tend to only see mistakes in my performances too.
At second 2, I click Like. Excellent job! Congratulations!
Thanks so much, glad you liked it :)
one of the best cover bassline! very closly to orig. ))
+Vyacheslav Michel Thanks so much. There are a couple of other really awesome covers out there too, so thank you.
Two thumbs up Sarah!!!
Очень понравился подход к музыке и её детализации. Браво!
Большое спасибо, я рад, что вам понравилось.
Wow! Awesome! 👏👏👏
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it :)
SUPERB! MASTERFULL!
Awww.... thanks :)
@@SarahJonesBass I wish I could play like you. At what age you started to practice?
@@alejandrocruzb.4815 its just takes lots of practice and pain, but eventually you start to make progress. I first started at age 14 and played for a few years. I gave up until 2009 when I got back into playing again.
Goo Job Sarah!
Keep on pushin'...
Roger Lee Meyzindi Thank you :)
Yeah that was bumping nice groove
1!!! perfect :) greetings from Slovakia
Thanks so much!
Hi from England :)
A bass line that's a bit involved and very nicely done!
Indeed! All I hear now are mistakes and I wish I had done it differently now, but it is what it is :)
Don't cut yourself short. Nice job!
Well done Sarah!
Thanks. After so many years, I just hear the bits I could have done better. But on the whole I'm still pretty happy with this.
muy bacano, tocas super, con ese bajo uno se mete mas en las canciones :)
AMAZING Sarah!
Very Cool ! Thanks for sharing !
Glad you liked it, thanks:)
