Europe and Australia have a 25 KM/h limit for regular bikes. In Canada and the U.S., regular e-bikes can go 32 KM/h without a licence. There are 45 KM/h in North America that don't require a licence, but not all states/provinces allow them yet (right now they're allowed in about 40% of jurisdictions).
One thing I like about e-bikes is I still also take public transport, and where I'm from they have a certain place for e-bikes and bikes, and if the train is stopped for whatever reason I can still do what I need to do, it'll just take me longer
Octobarvaria Samoth i do not believe any human ever paid that much to insure anything less than a lambo. Most people dont even make much more than $48k a year which is what that costs...
I made a 60v ebike with a 56 tooth front crank that allows me to pedal with the motor at high speeds and I absolutely love it! I can reach speeds up to 45 mph. I'll occasionally use it to commute 25 miles (one way) to my work, charge it there then take it back. Still have my car for when I need to make better time, or if the weather doesn't permit using the ebike, but it's an awesome extra option to have that helps a ton on saving on gas. I almost exclusively use it for doing errands in my town where I only need to travel a couple miles..Meanwhile there's people around me taking massive trucks to stores only a mile away from them, absolutely ridiculous.
Just got my ebike today. After 3 hours of riding around, I believe I made the best decision. I live in NYC and my building does not have parking. So I can easily put my bike inside my apartment. That was the ultimate bonus.
My problem of using this over a car is people stealing them. Even the best locks can be broken in seconds and if your bike is an expensive ebike or even a cheap one it's going to be a target. So it's not going to be something people can generally use unless it's to a work place they can bring their bike inside. Recreation is great but this can't replace a car in most cities. Sucks because I would use this instead of a car if it weren't for that issue.
Hate when people say this like there isn't a million articles/videos on how to prevent bike theft. As someone who has been biking for 4 years, I've never had my bike stolen. I used to leave my bike outside for hours during work and never had it stolen. I go to the store several times a week and often leave my bike outside for 20+ minutes without issues. There are so many ways to prevent bike theft. For example, it's recommended to used atlast 2 locks. One around the back wheel/frame, and another around the frame. You can also put a bike alarm that sends an alert to your phone when your bike is touched/moved. Another thing you can do is add a tracker under your bike seat or in a bag on your bike so even if some one somehow managing to get past your 2 locks and your alarm system, you can still track them down. There, solved your theft issue. Not that hard lol.
Dude you're so so dead-on!! I sold my car, got an ebike. Used that money to add to my savings and quit my job to trade cash secured puts and cash covered calls. I work 3 hours a day now and ride my bike the rest of the day! Don't get an expensive ebike, use your savings to trade options! Trust me on this. I'm the happiest I've ever been!
yep all you need is a $1-2k bike. Good enough for most people. Most ebikes in this price range can reach up to 28 mph and have a range of atleast 40 miles. Good enough for most people.

where i live this bike is considered a moped and i would need to get insurance for it. If you dont have a drivers licence for a car you would also need to get that or a Moped licence.
I got an e-Bike in May and have put about 420 miles on it now (as of October). I moved to a new city that has a train I can take to work, so I ride my bike 4 miles to the station, fold my bike in half and hitch a ride on the train for about an hour and a half, get off the train and make it to work in 5 minutes after.. The idea of not needing to take my license with me everywhere and not dealing with insurance is so awesome. I also have a very tiny car and a huge SUV, but now I barely have to use 'em. MIGHT consider reducing down to just my car. I'm sacrificing some time, but realizing I save so much more money, wear and tear on my car/truck, it just feels so much better. The bike just feels so much more freeing.
"You can even go on the sidewalk because no one gives a shit". Really?! And you don't need insurance or to worry about traffic violations? Ok, Canada plays by different rules to where I live😅
Bikes are extremely dangerous and I would highly recommend you reconsider this choice and, particularly, encouraging others to make such a choice. To put it bluntly, when you are hit by a car you might die if you're in a car, but if you're hit by a car and you're on a bike then your life is far more likely to end right then and there.
No license/insurance required despite driving on public roads? Is that right? Surely at the speeds e-bikes can go, insurance and a licence are mandatory? Or does Canada have a specific rule on e-bikes?
No, the rules don't allow that in Canada either. He acknowledges that in the video, but isn't worried about it because all they can do is give him a fine, not a ticket.

@@krmass24 I'd like to see different speeds/powers of e-bike, with the base level not requiring a licence, but licencing (to prove competency) for the more powerful ones.
So different in Europe and I'm in Ireland. Legally anything that goes above 25kmh with pedal assistance needs a license and insurance and cannot travel in bike lanes. So what you are riding (four years ago) can only be ridden on roads as an e-motorbike. Canada was mentioned. Is it similar to Europe or the US there?
This is great for trips around the city, it will save me on gas. However, 3 and half hour drive to Las Vegas once a year for work, I see a car being more beneficial.
Hey man, I saw this video a few years ago before I bought my first ebike and it made me fall in love with the Sur Ron. Now i have one of my own because of your mention. It's the love of my life and I just want to say thanks for introducing me to this!
I do have to say that there are some ongoing maintenance stuff with my bikes. You have to buy tools and new tires/tubes etc, plus you need to buy full gear to be safe. And the downside is that I have to make smaller trips to the grocery store. That's the only real inconvenience.
@@blackrifle3742 I did a 290 kilometre single day trip on my e-bike. I carried a second battery and two chargers, and charged at every stop. Made it through the day no problem. E-bike batteries are reasonably light for good quality e-bikes (ones with a Shimano, Bosch, or Yamaha motor) so you can carry as many extra as you need. Still cheaper than owning a car. I'm not saying there are no advantages to owning a cary, but there are also advantages to owning an e-bike. An e-bike is my primary form of transportation. So your assertion is incorrect that you can't reliably travel serious distances, should you choose to.
Not requiring a license or having any rules as to where this vehicle is supposed to drive seems very dangerous lol, especially when it can go THAT fast ...
You could also check out 2 stroke engines and centripetal clutch operated 4 strokes that you could put on bikes. Get going up to 35 some mph. Just don’t go fast in front of the cops, and don’t run anyone over. Ahahaha. Bikes work fine for city traveling in the summer/spring and fall months, but I’ve still got a car for the winter ones when everything freezes over and there’s penis deep snow everywhere. E bikes help you save on gas and that’s why I like them. I’m a poor bastard so I’m going to be using my e-bike for traveling up until it’s beyond repair.
For sure they do, I did it for years. But now I'm on an e-bike and it's enhanced my life. Pennies on a charge (literally, as it's about 3 cents per charge.. maybe 25 cents per charge if you include the wear and tear on the battery). I get where I need to go faster, but still get the amount of exercise I want. Heck, I can get better exercise on the e-bike as I can interval training on it by turning the battery off strategically and using the extra weight of the e-bike to add intensity to that portion of the workout.
you can use normal bike however if you are going to commute to school or work and you need speed to get there in shortest time possible, it's better to drive an ebike. you always get consistent and faster speed with an ebike compared to a regular bike and you don't sweat. if you drive a regular bike to work or school, you will sweat and stink and it may take you longer to get to your destination. if I want to exercise, I can still do that with my ebike by selecting lowest pedal assist option or turning off the motor on my way back to home when my shift at work ends. also I find that when I ride a regular bike, I don't always feel motivated to ride it whereas with my ebike I always feel that I want to be on the road, so it's motivating to get me to exercise and be outdoors. I ride my ebike on daily basis to work and I don't regret it.
Except you can’t use it to go shopping, you have to carry a helmet around and if you have an accident, there’s a good chance you’ll be seriously injured.
I have a car, a big bike and a road bicycle. I like all of them for different reasons But comparing an e-bike with a car and just saying you save money is a bit poor reasoning. What about other argument like: Passengers? Shopping bags full? Long distance trip? Rainy days? No need of any special equipment. Air con, heater, etc...
If you have the money then sure. An e-bike would still have advantages over a tesla. It is more environmentally friendly since it has a smaller battery and less materials, it's cheaper, you don't need a licence or insurance and you can cut through heavy traffic.
E-bikes are pretty good. I have built mine and i'm happy with that. BUT, if the e-bike is more than 250w (or more than 25km/ph), you have to put a number plate on it, means road tax, also insurance and in some countries you have to wear a motorcycle helmet and of course need a license. In other words, an e-bike which is quite fast and quite powerful, it's actually a moped, at least in Europe, which means you have to pay a similar amount as if you get a normal engine powered moped. A very good e-bike (eg Stromer ST5) costs around $10,000. My moped from 80's, brand new, costed me only $300 in '00s, means i can buy 33 mopeds like this for the price of a Stromer! The moped is also more powerful, faster and with tons of range (8 litres for around 600kms). Brakes, stability, frame, geometry are better too. Also comfort, as the seat is way more comfortable and for two, plus the suspension, the racks etc. So, my question is: why someone has to pay that big amount of money for an e-bike, which is actually a moped (with road tax, insurance, helmet, etc as any other moped), while he can get a real moped for 1/33th of the price with everything on it and everything better, and also can get a normal e-bike (with speed not more 25kms) for everyday exercise? P.S: I still use my moped after 20 years, still in very good shape, only 1lt of oil every year ($10-12), also 1.5 lt of mix oil ($9-10) and around 8-10 times fill up the gas tank (around $100). Means around $120 a year. I'm not sure how much the cost of charging the e-bike if i have to charge it everyday for a year, but a battery probably needs a replacement every 2-3 years if you use the bike in daily basis and a good e-bike battery costs more than $600 (Stromer's battery more than $1100). So, it seems like not the best solution.
Well... As a cyclists, I would say riding mountain/road bike (push bike) can actually saves me more money than any other bikes. In additional it improves your fitness level to 🚴 🔩🔩🔩. Cardiovascular of course 😁.

I ride an ebike in Sydney, australia. But you are only legally allowed to have a 250w motor on it. If you have more than a 250w motor it is technically classed as an unregistered motorbike. But that being said, the streets are flooded with people riding 1000w and 2000w bikes and the police don't care unless you are breaking road rules and stuff. But recently some guy was riding an ebike and killed a person and he is facing jail time because the bike was 500w www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2019/01/31/fake-e-bike-unmasked-in-pedestrian-death/

I have a fat bike and still slippery and hard to maneuver over thick snow. if I am driving over thick snow, I will slow my speed down to avoid falling off. in Toronto where I live, roads are constantly salted so most of the time the snow is not thick and roads are easy to ride on in the winter. if you are not driving on main roads, it may be not salted and you may experience difficulty driving on it.

Situation in the EU: Distinction between pedelec, s-pedelec and e-bike. Pedelec and e-bike are only allowed to go up to 25km/h motor assisted. You HAVE to use the bike lanes. S-Pedelec: Goes faster than 25 km/h but is thus considered a regular scooter. Thus: needs insurance, needs a driving license, needs to have mirrors, needs yearly inspection and you are required to wear a helmet. 25km/h is a real downer, as my average speed with my regular bike is around 22 km/h. It would not get me faster anywhere. Just less sweaty.
Not legally. The bike Vegan Gains is riding in this video is not street legal, nor any of the ones he recommends. He acknowledges this in the video indirectly by pointing out that all they can do is fine him, they can't raise his insurance rates or confiscate the video. In North America, the fastest street legal e-bikes go 45 KM/h, and are called "class 3" e-bikes. Regular bike shop e-bikes go 32 KM/h. Last I checked there were 22 states and no provinces that have allowed class 3 e-bikes (sometimes nicknamed "speed bikes"). However, I have reason to believe that British Columbia may be the first province to allow them.

They get stolen way too easily. If they don't steal the whole thing, then parts of it, so you don't have peace of mind when you lock it outside. Another thing is you have to watch out for dangerous cars that will randomly try to bully you.
I wouldn't take a job if a car was required for it! :) I agree, other than I recommend pedal assist e-bikes as that way you can choose how much of the power comes from you and how much comes from the motor, while getting much longer range than throttle-equipped e-bikes.
Really thinking about all this...for my Jeep, my car payment is $415/month, insurance is $115/month, registration each year, oil changes, tires, and that’s the bare minimum maintenance....on an ebike, how would one do groceries again?
You can get an ebike that can hold cargo. Check out daymak and emmo ebikes. You can also get motorcycle saddle bags and trunks that are compatible with some ebikes. The only maintenance you have to do on most ebikes is make sure your tires have adequate pressure and charge the battery.
well in germany this (the firefly from Sur Ron)is considered the same as other small 2 wheel power vehicles (the X bike isn't even legal on streets here) so you still need a license that you can get when you are 15 year olds, so with that falling in the same category as motorcycles, what would you guys recommend to get?
Wait, you can drive on the bicycle way, do not need a license, no insurance and can ignore rules? Really? Non of that sounds realistic to me, pretty sure the police does that see differently, all of it.
What about in the US? Do you happen to know the laws regarding the whole "no license" part of this experience? I believe it varies per state, but I heard something like anything above 35 mph, at least I believe in Wisconsin, would be considered something you need a form of licensing for. I could be wrong, was wondering if you or anyone else may have any knowledge on this aspect of the E-Bike somewhat murky laws there.
Looked a bit more into it, it appears "The state of Wisconsin (WI) defines electric bikes as a bicycle with a motor attached. It must have pedals that are operational, an electric motor that is less than 750w and have a maximum speed of 20mph on level ground." and also "Riders must possess a valid driver’s license, operators license or instructional permit." Well, that takes away a lot of the fun unfortunately. Still would love one, but that is quite the shame.
@@NightOfTheLiving8bit According to what I've been reading into here, at least in my state, no registration is required and you only need an instructional permit as a minimum to make it technically legal, assuming you follow the other requirements like being 20 mph or lower, that is. Probably very different per state though, mine may be a little more on the less strict side than many others. Also, I would agree that many of these things are different than presented, but in all fairness he lives in Canada and may just have been representing information specifically from his country for this video, may not have even properly looked into outside of his country here. I couldn't really say anything for certain either way however, pretty much unconfirmable in that aspect, won't really bother with that since I'm not him. But, nevertheless regardless of that situation, I believe I might make the spring on perhaps building my own electric bike setup that meet the minimum requirements in my state, either way for me the environmental aspect and gas price savings would make it worth using a good amount of the time for me as long as it's not a ridiculously long trip. We'll see how all that plays out. Haha But yeah, thanks for the reply brother, appreciate the reply and feedback on everything.

Great video and good points. That trippy fish-eye lens and camera rear facing position really enhances the video. Nice job.👌 I've been riding and building e-bikes since 2010 and I have to agree with a lot of the points. But I think you need to preface your advice and state the Sur-Ron is *not* a typical e-bike. Because it isn't -- not even close. This Sur-Ron bike that you recommend at 9:09 in the video doesn't even have bicycle pedals. Pragmatically, this will instantly put authorities and law enforcement looking at this *vehicle* from a whole different mind set. That mindset will *not* include the word "bicycle" when they see you riding on the streets. At 70kph max speed and 5000W+ of power, this Sun-Ron doesn't fit any any North American e-bicycle category for either speed or power. I believe those categories (especially wattage) are too low but it is what it is. But you already know this. I'm just stating this for the benefit of other RUclips viewers. This is also why the LunaCycles page lists their upgraded/unlocked Sun-Ron models/kits as "off road only". They will try to avoid getting sued when someone takes it on the road but ends up crashing or getting fined and tries to make LunaCycles liable for it. But I'm sure they realize people ride them on the streets and the "off road only" is just a weasel phrase to sell more bikes because their target customer base loves power and speed (why not?) Context: One of my main e-bikes is even faster more powerful than the Sun-Ron but it has pedals though I rarely pedal on it. It has full custom traffic lighting with multiple turn signals and multiple brake lights, DRL, and multiple night time running lights. I lane split with my fast e-bike and it feels more safe than any of my other e-bikes. Nobody likes getting passed up at great speed by cars & trucks just right next to you which is a common occurence in N. American suburban roads even on "regular" e-bikes. Cops don't pay mind in the 2 years I've been riding this fast e-bike in California. I mention this because we fast e-bikers need to cover our asses in case of "liability". In America, I recommend "umbrella insurance" but it requires a home insurance or vehicle insurance but it adds a lot of general liability coverage for some $20/mo. But it covers all kinds of liability from all sorts of recreation vehicles and even if you crash your aerial drone into someone's head. So something like umbrella is needed for "liability" coverage especially for folks in America where health care costs a fortune. If you run into a pedestrian with a Sur-Ron or similiar bike, it will could cause significant injuries. If you have no insurance and are found negligent/liable, the other party can come after you with $100K+ in American medical bills. I know specifically a broken femur costs *at least* $100k USD in hospital, surgery and other medical fees. Hospitals stays are $5000/night. You might have to sell your house or go into a wage garnish program for decades to pay it off. Canada has the universal single-payer health care, but they can still come after you for "lost wages" and "pain & suffering" I think. Canadian health care doesn't cover dental either and you can easily break teeth in a pedestrian incident. Well this ended up being a long response. But this vehicle needs insurance contrary to one of the primary arguments in this video. I hate to see someone ruin their financial lives over it.

One thing I like about e-bikes is I still also take public transport, and where I'm from they have a certain place for e-bikes and bikes, and if the train is stopped for whatever reason I can still do what I need to do, it'll just take me longer
However: You can transport other more than one person in cars, you don't have to worry about rain, snow wind etc. You also have more space for storage

Real!!
#1 reason stopping me from buying 2 wheeled electric vehicles
Yeah anyone got any ideas on how to stop them
Hate when people say this like there isn't a million articles/videos on how to prevent bike theft.
@@thelonercoder5816 If my bike had a tracker, would I attempt to recover the bike myself? The police usually don't respond.

In Spain it’s illegal to have an ebike over 250w and that goes over 25kmh, also it need to pedal assist you, you can’t have an accelerator
The same law in norway, but is nevertheless a better alternative.
It is the same law in all of EU. It's an European law

You make some good points..for traveling long distances you can always rent a car or take an uber or lift

Does Not work for anyone who has to transport others or carry tools or equipment
And you cant reliably travel any serious distance. Gasoline is everywhere and you can carry extra with you easily.
@@blackrifle3742 Sounds like someone didn't watch the entire video...
Cargo e-bikes are getting lighter and stronger and longer range. Won't work for everyone, but will work for more and more people as time goes on.
If its just for travel in a city, normal bicycles work pretty well.
People are lazy bastards
you can use normal bike however if you are going to commute to school or work and you need speed to get there in shortest time possible, it's better to drive an ebike. you always get consistent and faster speed with an ebike compared to a regular bike and you don't sweat. if you drive a regular bike to work or school, you will sweat and stink and it may take you longer to get to your destination. if I want to exercise, I can still do that with my ebike by selecting lowest pedal assist option or turning off the motor on my way back to home when my shift at work ends. also I find that when I ride a regular bike, I don't always feel motivated to ride it whereas with my ebike I always feel that I want to be on the road, so it's motivating to get me to exercise and be outdoors. I ride my ebike on daily basis to work and I don't regret it.

Which ebike you got ? :) I'm looking for one, im in belgium
Seems like a asshole move to be hauling ass like that on the sidewalk and bike lanes.

Are E-bikes still useful during the winter with heavy ice and snow?
Yes if you get ones with fat enough tires, and you have good bike handling skills, sure.
If you got Handling Skills then Thats Good Enough I Rode my Bike Today in Winter Due to an Emergency I had to do and I handled the Bike Pretty well even when I was about to Fall but don't Go too slow maintain your Speed not too fast or slow ah and yes better to put winter Tires on your Bike for better grip and handling.

That thing he's riding isn't an e- bike. It's an electric motorcycle. It doesn't have bike pedals. Also he's riding too fast to be in the bike lane.
True
This is basically the case everywhere (maybe some different speed limits and so on), i do not think what he is doing is legal.
Since when no license? Drive at 150kmh without license?

I wouldn't take a job if a car was required for it! :) I agree, other than I recommend pedal assist e-bikes as that way you can choose how much of the power comes from you and how much comes from the motor, while getting much longer range than throttle-equipped e-bikes.

You can get an ebike that can hold cargo. Check out daymak and emmo ebikes. You can also get motorcycle saddle bags and trunks that are compatible with some ebikes. The only maintenance you have to do on most ebikes is make sure your tires have adequate pressure and charge the battery.

I sold my car last week, and ordered an ebike. My parents think I wasted my money, and that I should be saving toward another car. I work FT from home. I really don’t need a car right now.
youtube recommended your video to my homepage! ebike ftw, feel like a kid! (: a common sentiment :)
Listen to this guy or he will beat your babies to a pulp, no cap.
I enjoyed this video.
new subscriber here from previous vid..
nice that your recommendation first a style I'd like perfectly
“No stress”
- drives in the winter on a fucking bike
- has to charge multiple times to make it to fucking Toronto and back from Guelph
Lmao, yeah… no thanks.
Just doesn't work in bad weather, winter and no passengers. But I get it. I need to get one..
But I'm sure they realize people ride them on the streets and the "off road only" is just a weasel phrase to sell more bikes because their target customer base loves power and speed (why not?)
Context: One of my main e-bikes is even faster more powerful than the Sun-Ron but it has pedals though I rarely pedal on it.
Thanks for this vid VG.
why there is a tag no insurance? wtf? if you'll have an accident what then?
