For me Missy is the best master incarnation. She’s fun and terrifying at the same time. The chemistry between Michelle Gomez and Capaldi is unmatched, they’re perfect frenemies
My jaw dropped when Missy was revealed as the Master. Apparently, to minimise the risk of leaks, Capaldi and Gomez only mouthed their dialogue when filming the reveal scene on location, and recorded the actual words later, which were then added to the soundtrack.
One of the best cliffhangers of the show, and just not because it's the Master but their performances as she says it are SO intense. Love this episode.
A great reaction to a very interesting episode. The three main characters in this episode, 12th, Missy and Clara, show some fantastic acting skills and works very well together.
Yeah, Missy is my favourite incarnation of the Master too. I was made up when they announced that Michelle Gomez was going to be in S8, as I loved her in Green Wing (a very weird sitcom set in a hospital full of odd characters). I knew that she'd be a great addition.
She is the only actor to play The Master the same way the very original actor had. That's why I liked her so much. I've watched every episode of Doctor Who, all Doctors, and the fact she was able to replicate Roger so well made me fall in love with her performance as Missy.
I think it's stunning how I (like the doctor) missed the obvious, the first time I watched this. The 3W logo being literally everywhere and resembling a Cyberman's eye. And even right there, when the doctor says the line, the closing elevator doors are just one giant Cyberman face...😂 And now I can't unsee it. Great episode. And although I do like Simm's Master, Missy is really marvellous.
@@cutthr0atjake I knew that second once the iconic theme motif played as the doors closed...Also we knew Cybermen were the big bad as the BBC couldn't hide a location shoot in the middle of London & on the day of filming announced it in a press release so we knew it was coming but not how, just like Rose's return in S4
That reveal is up there with River Song being Amy’s mother. Missy is exceptional and has great chemistry with Capaldi. IMO the best iteration of the master ever, including classic who. Great episode.
It is a great line for the Doctor/Clara relationship and furthermore it also foreshadows the return of his other best and always betraying friend, the Master. Just occurred to me.

I didn’t remember but RUclips allows me to click on your pfp and show me the last few comments you’ve put on my videos and the one your talking about appeared, so I saw it now and remembered 😂 thanks for watching the videos ❤️
There was a big hint when the Doctor asked "Which Time Lord?" and she said "The one you left for dead', referring back to where the Master was shooting at the Time Lord rulers who were trying to return. The Doctor basically left him behind because he was busy starting his regeneration after he saved Wilfred.
This cliffhanger is so good, I particularly love the music immediately after Missy is revealed to be the Master. And yeah, Missy is fantastic. I'm also really glad you mentioned liking close-ups of Capaldi's face as well, I really think he has one of if not the most expressive (and of course distinctive) faces I've seen in an actor; the range of emotions he can tell with just an expression or two is incredible.
You have exceptional taste my man! Peter had become my Doctor by this stage and still is and Missy, what can I say, there will never ever be another Master/ Mistress who could compete!! Was it a genuine shock btw or had u been spoiled/ guessed?
I just kinda love how morbid and dark this series/story goes. It’s something that feels very rare. I wasn’t a big fan of Missy at first but I think she’s cool. She’s definitely threatening and a great presence in this story.
The thing you'll soon learn is this: The Master is utterly batshit insane, but Missy has *control* on that batshit insanity, meaning she's *goddamn dangerous* due to how far she'll go.
Love this episode! That master reveal is one of my favourites in the show, although there’s been plenty of other amazing ones that rival this one. It’ll be interesting to see what you think of the second part!
Missy is definitely going to be your favourite master. She plays the role really well, does a better job of being evil but not too over the top like how John Simm ended up being in a lot of places in Series 3-4
Many of us older fans thought she must be a new incarnation of the Rani, who'd appeared in two stories in the 1980s. The earlier revelation that the Cybermen are also involved is more obvious, but probably helps distract the viewer from that bigger revelation! Overall, I like the horror here, and I like the concept of the episode, but it doesn't work as well as it should. A good episode that could've been a truly great one.
Missy is easily my favorite Master. Michelle Gomez is incredible. John Simm got let down by the way the wrote his character sometimes, but he did have some really strong moments.
This episode was really good, and I can't wait for you to start season 9! PS Steven Moffatt said that (he believes) the car that hit danny was being driven by Missy
Though it is not television cannon not only did Moffat joke about it, it actually became fact. In the later BBC DW book "The Missy Chronicles" Missy is revealed to have exactly been the one driving & running over Danny Pink. Her vehicle of choice was...A milk float!! 😂😂

We all loved Doctor Who, so we sat down to watch this in the evening to my ex's dad's literal words "Let's watch Doctor Who and take our minds off of today." They were all pretty big fans of the show. Then this episode played. That reveal of "Don't cremate me" was met with her dad suddenly and quite heavily crying. It was awful. We turned the episode off and I rewatched it the next week by myself before the next episode. I was on my own for that final episode. They never watched Doctor Who again. On the plus, the Missy reveal is actually pretty good! Missy is genuinely one of the best things to come out of this series.
Great episode and i loved both the Cybermen and the Missy reveal but poor Mr. Chang though as much as this pains me to say this was the episode where i lost all respect for Clara that she would go this far to betray the Doctor. For me I didn't mind Simm's Master but the problem was and I agree with you they made him too much like The Joker from Batman too crazy funny comedian, Missy was almost more like the original Master (Roger Delgado).
This 2 Parter is the start of so many downside for the show from this point onwards - Gender swapping regenerations. For me this came Way too late to not feel forced. Imo it needed to happen by the mid 70s imo. For it to happen her now and since its become quite common, it doesn't feel right. We have multiple time ladies in classic who. Including Susan. Sadly the one who Missy really should have been to me the rights to the character are in limbo as the creators are dead and no onw knows who their estate now belongs too. I still cannot see the Master and Missy as 1 character. Doesn't help the Mastee regenerates off screen. Ill go onto the resy when part 2 is uploaded.

@@HamzaReactzThe gender change has continued to be controversial unfortunately - they simply wouldn't have been able to try it in the 70's or 80's it would have been too way out, maybe the 60's though - also i m not sure Susan is a time-lady unles its in the extended universe. I agree with you Missy and Jakobi's Masters are way more 'Marsterly' than Simms (no disrespect to John Simm - i think they had to make his master that way for the end of time to work ie. for the drums to be at the root of the characterisation). I actually think 'Scary Poppins' would work better as female incarnation of another classic (assumed - well he has a Tardis) timelord but relatively few viewers would know them compared to the Master Either 2ay Michelle Gomez is brilliant in the role 😀
@@HamzaReactz I agree. The show keeps reinventing itself, so nothing is ever truly too late. Also, Michelle Gomez is excellent as the Master/Missy and is a great way to show that it is possible for time lords (the Doctor included) to gender swap. We also need to consider this quote... "That's the thing with regeneration. You're never quite sure with what you're going to get." - 5th Doctor after regenerating
Series 8 was a banger of a series for me, but at the time there was a lot of fabricated complaints that stemmed from the Showrunner being onboard with casting a Female Doctor. The Gatekeepers game out in droves, the guy who ran one of the biggest Doctor Who sites actually shut it down over it the backlash was intense there was hatred for Clara, because of how strong willed she was shown to be, the only thing that people could not complain about was ''Missy'' and there was a definite nitpicking of the episodes, to show the show runner Moffat who was in charge.... then this episode came along and shut all that b.s down...... this two parter was a godsend...these Actors in this role were a godsend..... this was beyond brilliant. the 12th Doctor owned the stage and what a stage it was.... Geronimo, but in the best way possible, my Doctor is the 11th Doctor, but they have not yet to get the Doctor wrong and Capaldi is straight fire in this role...... permission to wheeee.......
I think a lot of the dislike for Clara comes from Moffat making her so integral and instrumental to The Doctor's life. For example: 1. Clara gets the War Doctor to change his mind about using The Moment in the 50th, thus stopping the time war and saving Gallifrey, 2. She convinces the First Doctor which TARDIS to steal, 3. She's sprinkled throughout the Doctor's timeline with so many fragments interacting with all the versions of the Doctor, 4. she becomes a school teacher at Coal Hill (just like the original companions Ian and Barbara), 5. She hides under the Doctor's bed as a kid and gives him the "fear makes companions of us all" speech that the First Doctor used in his episodes, and 6. She's learning to pilot the TARDIS. Any one of those accomplishments would've been really cool for a companion to have experienced. The fact that Steven Moffat makes it *all* relate back to Clara is a little much. Why not save some stuff for the other companions? In a way, I feel that Moffat set out to make Clara the "ultimate" companion - and, for me, that is Sarah Jane - and not Clara's - title. Again, just my own thoughts, but a lot of fandom felt similar at the time. @@HamzaReactz
@@somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829 Gatekeeping would be saying something like “you can’t be a true fan if you don’t also dislike Clara,” which isn’t my position. I was responding to your previous comment where you said that the reason for the hatred of Clara was for “how strong-willed she can be.” All the NuWho main companions have been strong-willed (Amy, Rory, River, Donna, etc). Plus being strong willed is an admirable trait. I’m saying there are other reasons one might dislike Clara, and that, for me, it was because of her out-sized role and impact to the fabric & mythos of the show itself, compared to other companions before or since.

I actually think 'Scary Poppins' would work better as female incarnation of another classic (assumed - well he has a Tardis) timelord but relatively few viewers would know them compared to the Master
Either 2ay Michelle Gomez is brilliant in the role 😀
@@HamzaReactz I agree. The show keeps reinventing itself, so nothing is ever truly too late. Also, Michelle Gomez is excellent as the Master/Missy and is a great way to show that it is possible for time lords (the Doctor included) to gender swap.
We also need to consider this quote...
"That's the thing with regeneration. You're never quite sure with what you're going to get." - 5th Doctor after regenerating
Gender swap literally has happened in classic who what are you on about lmfao
Series 8 was a banger of a series for me, but at the time there was a lot of fabricated complaints that stemmed from the Showrunner being onboard with casting a Female Doctor.
The Gatekeepers game out in droves, the guy who ran one of the biggest Doctor Who sites actually shut it down over it
the backlash was intense there was hatred for Clara, because of how strong willed she was shown to be, the only thing that people could not complain about was ''Missy'' and there was a definite nitpicking of the episodes, to show the show runner Moffat who was in charge.... then this episode came along and shut all that b.s down......
this two parter was a godsend...these Actors in this role were a godsend..... this was beyond brilliant.
the 12th Doctor owned the stage and what a stage it was.... Geronimo, but in the best way possible, my Doctor is the 11th Doctor, but they have not yet to get the Doctor wrong and Capaldi is straight fire in this role...... permission to wheeee.......
Definitely don’t understand the hate for Clara. I think she’s great, the dynamic between her and the doctor is my favourite so far :)
Fair enough, those points are definitely valid reasons :)
@@DoctorWhoBookClub not trying to be mean, but that is the gatekeeper action that I am speaking of.
