BMW R 1300 GS ASA - It Learns Your Habits

  • ASA automatically adapts gear shifts to the rider's preferences in automated D mode, so in other words it learns your shift patterns/riding habits and performs the way you personally want it to perform in each ride mode: Eco, Rain, Road, Dynamic...etc.
The Automated Shift Assistant is the logical and technical evolution of the BMW Motorrad Shift Assistant Pro. Two electronically controlled electromechanical actuators operate the clutch and gearshift, enabling easy starting and automated gear changes. The rider's shift request is transmitted to the control unit via a gear shift lever sensor, which is actuated by the conventional foot-operated gearshift lever. Additional sensors determine the revs of the transmission input shaft and the clutch position. These values are transmitted to the TCU (Transmission Control Unit), which is closely linked to the engine control unit, for modelling and control of the clutch, shift actuation and status.
The clutch is operated by an electro-mechanical actuator combined with a hydraulic system with a direct hydraulic connection between the clutch master and slave cylinders. The actuator regulates the required clutch slip, engages the clutch when changing gear and disengages it when stopping.

As a big Honda DCT fan (Africa Twin) I always wondered why nobody else is offering an alternative. Finally the market is catching up and many "this is not riding a motorbike" haters will be shifting automated too ;-) . As long as I can run it on a manual mode, I never understood the critics on their quickshifters. I look forward to seeing the development of these systems. Thanks for the review. I want to give it a try myself.

I did not have both bikes side by side so could make mistake.

Yea, they have fix/reduced the noise level, I can tell with just about any 1300GS made around spring this year or there after. BUT BMW won't say anything...of course not! I even had a long discussion with the head mechanic at my dealer and he said that there is nothing that the mechanics have to do differently when servicing the motor. But I think they've added some sound absorbing material to the inside wall and/or adjusted the cam chain. But that is just rumors...

It is just an automated manual gearbox which is old technology in semi trucks for years already.
My 2012 Iveco Stralis 480 worked the same.
This tech only seems to be making its way now into smaller vehicles.
DCT on the other hand is effectively two three speed gearboxes, each with its own clutch hence the extra weight and split second shifting speeds.
An AM will never be as smooth as a DCT, it is just not possible. So two helmets will always be knocking

Add Electronic Suspension to the AT = 233kg (cause GS does not come without ES)

Honda's DCT is a lot more advanced than this, since it has two clutches and engages/changes gears A LOT smoother and FASTER than any manual, quick-shifter or "automated" systems. It's also much more complex, hence the weight difference.
