Can't really tighten them too much if they are a bit loose, and they are very difficult to untie once tightened. Not as good as the ampersand knot. Look it up.

Kind of a backwards way to do it. When the knots are pulled tight and look good, your pants will be loose. To tighten pants you have to move the knots apart, which creates slack in the middle and looks kind of lame.
