FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

It's going fast -- faster than any of us thought. In-depth build eps are welcome! Your team is the best.
Starting to take shape! Exciting 👍 🙌
Awesome group of people. Thanks for sharing this exciting build with us!
Very glad to see some good quality content on home-built/experimental aircraft.
Woah that Grypmat thing looks awesome! So many times that I've had the cowl off wondering where the heck that screw driver is.
Totally - it’s such a great idea, and their implementation is excellent.
Looking good Steve! It might not be a paid promotion for those tool holders, but we saw that episode of Shark Tank, and they were something I knew would be beneficial to the Aerospace world and hoped that they would get a deal. Happy to see them in work on your Plane.
This is so much fun to watch man thank you so much for documenting this series!!
More excellent work ! Great bunch on your crew Steve !
Wow! Those boys have been *busy*! It's clear to me now that building an aircraft is no simple task... Kudos to them for filming while they worked & thanks for an interesting update Steve.
I laughed when you mentioned "giving us a taste what it's like to build an airplane"... my first thought was "None for me, thanks... I'm full." Looking forward to showing you my RV-8 progress someday... and also getting the timing right to work on your plane, too... if only just a little.
After watching a few of your videos, I decided to get an RV-14 kit as well! I'm only a few hours in, but you were a big reason I chose the 14 over other models. I wish I had all the help you do. That would make things go a lot quicker.
Wow man, it's starting to look like an aircraft!! EXCITEMENT BUILDING!!! I know you've still got a ways to go, but still. 👍🍻 🤘🤘 🙌
What a great group of guys. Doesn't every guy wish he had the same.
I really enjoy your content, and you have a great attitude that's missing in a lot of the flight channels. There's an arrogance in a lot of the pilots that makes it hard to take large doses of their content. I'm not a pilot, but love the planes and most of the folks who fly them. Cheers.
Grypmats are the greatest! I'm not working on planes yet but do work on cars and trucks and use them daily!
Great to see the progress and to see y'all working on the plane! I'd really like to hear more about all the details and customizations y'all add as you progress - like lights or your panel or the interior - just to see what you went with and to hear why you chose those vendors/options, since you've probably gotten great suggestions from others
Awesome! All that stuff will be covered :)
@FlightChops Hopefully, Amanda and I will be having you over for dinner soon to get footage of my build! Cheers.
I just love the community of men who come together for such wholesome stuff. Everyone needs community like this. Thanks for sharing!
I did not realize there was a lot of custom fabrication involved in building a kit plane. Awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Cool yeah - the Van’s Aircraft kits are impressively precise, but yeah, if you want it “Burfect” some custom work is required :)
Most kits require alot of "custom" parts. Some alot less. But Vans, Zenith, and others are almost completely just assembly.
I see Mike Patey building parts from scratch and making it look easy. I see these smart, experienced, capable guys working hard to build a pre-fab plane. I'm afraid if I made an RV it would take me 20 years!
Hey Chops! Super sorry I haven't been watching. Ya know , life and all! Great team on this!! All love fro Pasadena Ca
Looks like another fine update FlightChops ..! Well done everyone with a thumbs up to each of you for helping in this build.!
I was fortunate enough to be staying close to Ardmore airfield in 2016 when the 2nd Mosquito they restored there did it's test flights. An Impressive sight. Nice job on the build.
Big difference. Fly what you build.
Absolutely wonderful to have all the help and experience to tackle such a big project. To me it would be hard not to wander around and check out all other cool stuff constantly at that hangar, hard to concentrate to get any work done.
Great update! I am a big fan of your channel. Thanks for all the effort which is put in these videos!
Veeery Skilled people around You Steve!
They are doing a very nice work in EVERY detail 👍👍👍
(Steve... When times come... Do Please tell us little bit of all those exiting planes at the same space as Your project.. 😉)
I feel like this build is going super fast. What an awesome group of people you have helping out! Keep up the awesome work.
Great video! Two things I know something about. First, Grypmat, I bought the set they sent you at Oshkosh last summer based on the recommendation of my cousin, a professional auto mechanic and aircraft owner. Didn’t have them in time for my annual but I foresee them being very handy! Second, a 6-32 tap, as a lifelong modeler I’ve tapped many holes that size. You should mention how fragile taps that small are, I always kept at least one spare in the drawer and two for 4-40! Love following your build, keep the updates coming!
Great stuff. Any content you're willing to make on other projects in the hanger would be very much appreciated. 👍👍
Wow, it's really coming together, good job!!!
nice one mate, looking forward to seeing her fly.
Love it. Totally cool watching it all take shape.
It is getting beautiful!
Looks like a good crew :)
I work full time on hawks and our supply just got us those grip mats and it’s been so much better then our magnet tray. I don’t lose sockets to the magnets
Awesome, Steve! 👌🏻
Looks amazing
Congrats looks great. You are going to have an awesome machine.
It's great to watch this build; I appreciate the time you're putting in to the videos. Question - Would you also need drainage holes in other low points, like the bottom of the rudder? I had never considered this before but could see how accumulated water would impact weight distribution (or maybe it's negligible).
Hi Steve, great job with everything you do! Is your helper Perry from Van's or did you hire him to assist you with your RV-14 build? I'll buy you a beer at Sun 'N Fun 2020 or Osh 2020. ~ Jeff Kramer
Perry's a local RV builder there who is doing a great job of helping lots of people understand how to make it happen! One of the great things about building an RV is the many people all over the world who have done it and are more than willing to help do it again!
Canadian plane building, have to use the timmies card
I was thinking exactly the same thing! Gotta be a Canadian build when you use a Timmies coupon card. lol!!!
A spiral flute tap would have helped with the canopy because they send the swarf back towards the surface.Nice job though......................
Good news is I'm sure I have more than a couple botched rivets in my build and I haven't fallen out of the air yet!
DANIEL BASOVITCH
1:11 PM (1 minute ago)
Thanks Steve, for the prompt reply, I will be looking forward to seeing that Video.
Always great Content! You have a great group of guys working with you! "edited"
It's all "working with" - nobody is working "for" me on this project :)
Do you have any A&Ps and/or IAs working with you?
Is that Gray interior paint your spraying in the cabin a chromate ? .... I've torn a few things aluminum apart that had no green chromate applied and the corrosion was bad.
Looks like a fun Winter build ( better than running a snow blower for sure ).......... a small Question...... is the canopy Lexan or Plexi......... I was a witness to a small plane crash at our airport and the Plexi-Glass window looked like it exploded and I understand LEXAN does not do that. Just a ton of Questions from my Headquarters here on the Pacific West Coast , If I were closer I'd love to help....Looks like a great bunch of plane folks ( lol) .
Maybe I missed one of your blogs, but is this RV yours or the flying clubs? Confused.
You’re welcome to come over and film my Sling TSi build!
You need to make a tour of mike patey's hangar this guy is a workhorse and a very clever plane builder :)
So happy to see this update. I love this content. Makes me want to buy my own RV. Is that a government official that did the river inspection?
These build vlogs have reminded me how much I hate autofocus (US Air Force broadcast journalist). One of these days I hope to build a plane myself....
Haha - yeah - sorry - I didn't think it was super bad in this one... but yes, I struggle with it, and try to use manual focus when able, but most of the time, I need to be shooting one handed...
Looking good. Are you keeping track how how many human hours are going into this? It'll be really interesting to know per "stage". And yes, please please please get them to document that Mossie build. For mine the best plane out of WW2
Did Vans do a good job of sealing the tanks for you? did you do any additional work to them?
you should go visit Mike Patey - he's building a carbon cub frankinstein by himself.
Hell yeah! Mike is crushing it.
Take a look at Jason Ellis RV10 build
I've been watching to much of the Marble Machine X build... I kept waiting for the tap to break at 11:25
How dare you, I believe Martin has finally stopped doing that...
@@owensparks5013 while true.. The anticipation still exists. It's only reinforced by the likes of This Old Tony and AvE who do it too 😁
steve, is there any reason Not to use your drill to tap the multiple holes in the canopy mounting? Seems to take an awful lot of time to hand tap each one.
Glad I found your channel , love the content. Are you out in Mount Hope doing this build ? Thx
Hey thanks! Welcome!
The full “build vlog” playlist is linked in the cards (click top right of video).
The initial episodes more clearly establish that we are building at the museum I fly warbirds with (the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association) based in Windsor, across the Detroit River
@@FlightChops Thx , I am going through them now. Was hoping you guys were at War Plane Heritage Museum in MH , would love to visit.
That looks like a German OWL in the background; with the orangie/beige paint job......what is it?
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
The one that is wood? It's a Mosquito Bomber. Really cool plane!
@@FishyCanada
Thanks for that!
I couldn't tell but it had the basic outline of an OWL, which surprised the daylights out of me, as I've always though a Carbon Fiber OWL, full or 3/4 scale would make a heck of an Air Racer!
Look the OWL up and you'll be surprised at her very pleasant lines!
Thank you for getting back to me....good luck on the Mosquito restoration!
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA
alright, heres a question, what colour is it gunna be?!
What plane is in front of yours being built?. It is a greenish-gray color, with the yellow, and black stripes on the vertical stabilizer.
With all the help your getting on this kit it should be done pretty fast, is it still considered to be 51% and can you do the inspections on it?
Good questions - I will address this and other “behind the scenes” and logistical things in future Build Vlogs
I'm happy to say I voted for the thumbnail on his Instagram, also third comment!
Thanks for the help with that! I find titles and thumbnails the hardest part of being a "RUclips Content Creator"!
I have total confidence in my ability to tell an engaging story, but if I can't get the click, none of that matters... and the algorithm mostly looks at CTR (click through rate) when deciding how widely to share and suggest a video, so the title and thumbnail are critically important parts of this process...
When I made those two thumbnail choices they seemed equally good to me, but thousands of people voted on that poll in the story and the results favoured this at 80% VS 20% for the other!
I am so glad I was able to get help from a big sample size before committing blindly :)
Nice job , I build one similar of these a long time ago.
but , bur ,but I see Mosie parts and a mosie plane, I see a British bomber , like a Lancaster type
please make us also wiser in those project too?
Please please please ?
How much did the paint weight?
Wondering if the grey color paint is zinc chromate? I have only seen it in green and yellowish color.
I am not sure about the specs of the grey paint - I was out of the country at the time, so I just selected the colour remotely, and the guys got it - but I am pretty sure the underlying parts were already primed as it is a quick build fuselage.
Considering the capabilities I am surprised that there are not any options for deice and anti ice equipment. I primarily fly in the mountains of the Southwest USA and ice is a consideration for 8 months of the year. More if I fly in the flight levels. If I ever build my own plane it will need a TKS system that would let me fly into known icing. Are you considering any anti ice equipment? I rarely hear any builders talk about it.
Yeah, I don't think it's "a thing" for these little planes... I'd love to hear if there are options, but I suspect deice and anti ice equipment is either too complex, or too heavy, or both, for this application...
@@FlightChops At the very least I would seriously consider a heated pitot tube that also has your static ports. No fun in IMC when you get big red X's across your screens.
Is that a Lancaster in the background?
Yes, FM212.
is the lancaster in the background going to be put togheter or will it remain in big sections
It will be assembled. It is mid-restoration. It will not fly however all 4 engines will run and it will be able to taxi.
@@thehoeser thats great to hear. im not sad it wont be flying. after all there are not a lot of lancasters left in the world and i think it would be a shame if it were to be destroyed in an accident. but it being able to taxi under own power is propably going to make it easier to move around the airfield if there ever is a need for re arranging the planes
Looks great , but can 't you drill a few holes first and then tap them insted one hole at the time ?
I believe the reason you do one at at time is to be sure they are perfectly aligned; so, we have the previously done one screwed in, and the next one waiting to be done still locked down with a cleco, so at any given time, only one hole is not connected.
@@FlightChops I would be power-tapping those holes for sure. I don't have the patience for a hand tap!
@@FlightChops I would be power be power-tapping those holes for sure. Don't have the patience for hand tapping each one!
you really want to have precision there.. with a countersunk screw you align the clamped part (here the acylic canopy) to the thread if now two holes are not perfectly aligned you create stress which can lead to a crack.. and this is the very last thing you want with such a canopy!
Does Canada follow the same 51% rule as we do here with kit builds? Noticed how many people are working on this project and wondered if that will be an issue on this project.
I will address this in a future vlog, the short answer is it works differently in Canada.
In the USA, an Experimental Amateur Built airplane (EAB) has to be 51% built by one or more amateur builders. So a group can certainly build a plane together, it actually happens often. Only one person can apply for the FAA repairman's certificate for a US-based airplane after it's done. But there's no limit to the number of builders that can participate.
Have built 3 Experimental Amateur Built airplanes - when inspected by the FAA, they were totally complete and ready to fly. No precover inspection - what is that?
Pre-cover inspections are a requirement in Canada (not in US).
Who does the pre-closure inspections?
I'm going to do an episode to address some of these technical things and share how to go about that side of things. I will also be addressing the random budget things like how much money we have spent on foam floor pads to protect knees, etc :)
Thanks, I’m hoping to build an RV-10 in the near future. I just retired from the military flying helicopters and been on hold till I start the next career flying for the Airlines.
Do you have to buy each section separately?
Life of Flying no you don’t have to but it makes sense for a lot of builders...
I ordered the tail kit to see if I like to work with solid rivets etc.. meanwhile I was saving for the wing kit.. during wing building I‘ve saved money for the fuselage kit while saving for the finishing kit...
@@Spinner1987CH thank you
@@Spinner1987CH
That is an awesome username 👍
I think that if you purchase the kit complete you get a discount. Like a lot of things buying piece by piece costs more. Reason why? Because all the extra handling. Every time someone touches a part your adding handling charges to the finished price.
SECOND!
Is there a ‘bot’ that automatically give ‘8’ thumbs downs to every great video? Don’t know who would give this a thumbs down?
Whats an honest estimation of a single person building one of these in hours committed?
Are they going to throw a modern turboprop on that mosquito or throw on the classic Rolls Royce Merlin?
Look closer (the engines are hung :)
@@FlightChops I saw the engines in later episodes. Just caught up an hour ago. I like your choices for your plane interior, it will look sharp.
Who will be the owner of this aircraft when it's completed?
Tell
Mikey McBryan this is building an aircraft
Haha - that's not really a fair comparison :P
We also have a salvaged Tiger Moth project on that go that is probably going less smoothly than his Fokker build.
If only you guys were closer...
