After reading Habits for Holiness, I read Happy Are You Poor, and both changed my life. As a family, we live simply, but I no longer judge those who have money or spend lavishly thanks to what both books taught me. Thank you for the What Your Money Means rec.

I thank my dad as well for guiding me how to purchase stuff since young, he would always ask me questions like: 1) Why do you need it? Is it urgent and important? 2) If you don't have it tomorrow, is it going to help you in any way in life? 3) How much is the price? Is there a cheaper alternative? 4) Is the value and price good? Does it last long? 5) Do you own something similar? Is it still working? He then encourages us to wait for a week and see if we still need it for anything in life. He lets us buy stuff only if its urgent like our education books, pencils, notebooks, pens, food, etc. Things like junk foods, candies, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. He will survey us through the questions, which I disliked it a lot when I was younger, but I tend to forget about it after waiting a week as well, so dad was right.
Even if you live simply you still need money for essentials. Food, shelter, medicine, clothing. Tithing is talked about in the Bible, but just because you have excess money doesn't make you evil.
As a retiree, I try to limit my spending to things that fit into 2 criteria: to replace/replenish something that is broken and if it makes my responsibilities easier. I can't say I'm 100% there yet, though. :-(. For instance, recently I started a new hobby - all was fun, until I realized how much more it was costing than I had anticipated! I felt terribly guilty at every dollar I put into this frivolous spending. I realized I had already spent so much, I couldn't turn back. I finally decided, that when the final item was purchased, I would tally up every penny that I spent on it and match it 100%, to either give to the poor or someone in need. I feel somewhat better - but not much.

It's not wrong to desire material things as long as they are not creating the near-occasion of sin or becoming idols that we become beholden to or covetous of. As Paul states in 1 Timothy 6... 6 There is great gain in godliness with contentment; 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; 8 but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. It's best to ask ourselves if we would still be content without our material comforts. If not, that merits a deeper examination of conscience and action. One method I have used for breaking a covetous mindset is fasting and confession. The clothes and food mentioned in the passage are not the heart of contentment. That is Jesus Christ, the grace of God the Father, and the Holy Spirit within me. If I can be content with him, I will find my way back to contentment with food and clothes and away from material gain. This is followed by a deep engagement with the Sacrament of Reconciliation to bring my materialism to the Lord so that he may exchange it for the spirit of contentment. And then when I receive communion, I will find it fully in him.

It seems like a really big thing when someone gets a lot of money from their business online to go out and purchase things that they had their eyes on when they were poor. There is a competition that breaks out over who is or is not going to come out on top. Competition and rivalry might have been what worked in business or school sports, but the act of sabotage online has gone way too far when it comes to dominating the people in your space. Everything in this world is dominated by power and how much you can control dictates how that power is distributed. Paul was right when he said that we are not fighting against flesh and blood but the principalities and powers at work in this world.
Thanks, i went and made a donation to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, i have always felt like they use my money the right way to help in some needy places. Another group I give to sometimes is Cross Catholic Outreach. Both those groups help international needs via Catholic partner organizations that are local in that country without taking out much administrative costs and I like that approach. Happy Are You Poor is, indeed, a very good book. I haven't seen Fr Mark-Mary's Habits for Holiness yet but that would be a good one I might get for our parish library.
I don't have money like I used to. I used to work at a University And we will get big raises And that doesn't matter to me one thing we need For me to feed my family I got 3 children And my wife . And pay rent Pay for the car and insurance only the need . But no things are different Since 2018 I've been retired I'm on the fix income and get so security And a small mount on a pension. So we have to watch very carefully the way we spend money And my wife worked 2 part time jobs so we can make it . I try to give what I can to the church . If I have extra money and someone else For food I'll try my best . When I used to work Before I retired me and my wife and kids want to applebee's We did not finish the food So we have them put it in the Box to take home and there was a homeless person and my wife gave the food to that person .
I do confess that it's difficult to give and i do fear retirement..anyways..Give away the extra you have..Don't plan for comfort in this world..work hard as long as you can..you are here not to build kingdoms but as a pilgrim..
Great advice, which I practice! Most of the time I talk myself out of the item. Another tactic I use is telling myself that the item I am interested in will only be worth about a third of the price I paid once I leave the store. Do I really need it at that value? That frees me to give more money to charity, which always makes me feel better.

Thanks for the video I live in a developing country where unsafety and crime are rampant. I sometimes think about emigrating to study in Europe, where, materially, things are generally better. Do you think it'd be rightful for me to do so?
Who are the poor? Is it the one standing on the street begging for money or is it the guy who has a job and struggles to make ends meet for his family? If you aren't willing to help yourself and get a job (or two) then why should I help you? Been tossing these questions around for a while now.
Well are you giving in a disciplined way to the deserving poor or are you avoiding giving altogether by saying people aren't deserving. It's okay to target your giving but you need to give. You might choose to give to orphans, or the blind, or give money so people can start a business. Choose a cause you feel is worthy and support that.

I try to give where it will be used best, but ultimately I try to live by this idea: if I give money to someone and they use it shamefully that reflects poorly on their character and they will have to reconcile that with God, but if I see someone in need and turn away in fear, selfishness, or pride then that reflects poorly on my character and I will have to reconcile with God. Therefore, don’t be consumed with the desire to give the most efficiently if it will get in the way of giving with love.

I have issues with how much to give my grown adult daughter who is a single mom and needs money all the time. I don’t know to what point I’m supposed to give or save? I have given her thousands of dollars over the years and it continues. But I don’t know where to draw the line does anybody have an answer?
Give from your heart with no expectations in return. If she has children to raise, she needs money. If you have a bit of extra and you can spare it, and you know it will make a difference in her life then give what you can. If you feel resentful or if she is abusing of the gift coming her way, then that is a different conversation all together.

I thank my dad as well for guiding me how to purchase stuff since young, he would always ask me questions like:
1) Why do you need it? Is it urgent and important?
2) If you don't have it tomorrow, is it going to help you in any way in life?
3) How much is the price? Is there a cheaper alternative?
4) Is the value and price good? Does it last long?
5) Do you own something similar? Is it still working?
He then encourages us to wait for a week and see if we still need it for anything in life. He lets us buy stuff only if its urgent like our education books, pencils, notebooks, pens, food, etc. Things like junk foods, candies, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. He will survey us through the questions, which I disliked it a lot when I was younger, but I tend to forget about it after waiting a week as well, so dad was right.
I read Habits of Holiness and that little tidbit on contentment totally changed my spending habit. Good book!

Even if you live simply you still need money for essentials. Food, shelter, medicine, clothing. Tithing is talked about in the Bible, but just because you have excess money doesn't make you evil.
As a retiree, I try to limit my spending to things that fit into 2 criteria: to replace/replenish something that is broken and if it makes my responsibilities easier. I can't say I'm 100% there yet, though. :-(. For instance, recently I started a new hobby - all was fun, until I realized how much more it was costing than I had anticipated! I felt terribly guilty at every dollar I put into this frivolous spending. I realized I had already spent so much, I couldn't turn back. I finally decided, that when the final item was purchased, I would tally up every penny that I spent on it and match it 100%, to either give to the poor or someone in need. I feel somewhat better - but not much.

It's not wrong to desire material things as long as they are not creating the near-occasion of sin or becoming idols that we become beholden to or covetous of. As Paul states in 1 Timothy 6...
6 There is great gain in godliness with contentment;
7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world;
8 but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content.
It's best to ask ourselves if we would still be content without our material comforts. If not, that merits a deeper examination of conscience and action. One method I have used for breaking a covetous mindset is fasting and confession. The clothes and food mentioned in the passage are not the heart of contentment. That is Jesus Christ, the grace of God the Father, and the Holy Spirit within me. If I can be content with him, I will find my way back to contentment with food and clothes and away from material gain. This is followed by a deep engagement with the Sacrament of Reconciliation to bring my materialism to the Lord so that he may exchange it for the spirit of contentment. And then when I receive communion, I will find it fully in him.

It seems like a really big thing when someone gets a lot of money from their business online to go out and purchase things that they had their eyes on when they were poor. There is a competition that breaks out over who is or is not going to come out on top. Competition and rivalry might have been what worked in business or school sports, but the act of sabotage online has gone way too far when it comes to dominating the people in your space. Everything in this world is dominated by power and how much you can control dictates how that power is distributed. Paul was right when he said that we are not fighting against flesh and blood but the principalities and powers at work in this world.
Thanks, i went and made a donation to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, i have always felt like they use my money the right way to help in some needy places. Another group I give to sometimes is Cross Catholic Outreach. Both those groups help international needs via Catholic partner organizations that are local in that country without taking out much administrative costs and I like that approach. Happy Are You Poor is, indeed, a very good book. I haven't seen Fr Mark-Mary's Habits for Holiness yet but that would be a good one I might get for our parish library.
I don't have money like I used to. I used to work at a University And we will get big raises And that doesn't matter to me one thing we need For me to feed my family I got 3 children And my wife . And pay rent Pay for the car and insurance only the need . But no things are different Since 2018 I've been retired I'm on the fix income and get so security And a small mount on a pension. So we have to watch very carefully the way we spend money And my wife worked 2 part time jobs so we can make it . I try to give what I can to the church . If I have extra money and someone else For food I'll try my best . When I used to work Before I retired me and my wife and kids want to applebee's We did not finish the food So we have them put it in the Box to take home and there was a homeless person and my wife gave the food to that person .
I do confess that it's difficult to give and i do fear retirement..anyways..Give away the extra you have..Don't plan for comfort in this world..work hard as long as you can..you are here not to build kingdoms but as a pilgrim..

Great advice, which I practice! Most of the time I talk myself out of the item. Another tactic I use is telling myself that the item I am interested in will only be worth about a third of the price I paid once I leave the store. Do I really need it at that value? That frees me to give more money to charity, which always makes me feel better.

What gets me is when I'm watching QVC late at night when I can't sleep, I'm almost talked into buying something! It takes a lot of will power to not buy!

When I read Bible passages I interpret some verses in this way: give to the poor, the more you have the less you will enter the kingdom of God. Give away your things. Live with little. Am I misunderstanding this correctly? Is it really bad to own a home or have material things because others need our help more? Looking for guidance on this.

Elysium = Natural, quieter, less use, etc.
World = body = more
Think about your life and well being first.

It's easy for people in religious life to talk about the vow of poverty and the Zen state of dispossession. People on the outside for the most part need money not to go out on their yachts or take exotic trips to resort islands. People need money to pay bills -- from taxes to mortgages to student loans to car payments and for gas, heat and food. And when the money they earn falls short, then they borrow from banks incurring yet more bills. More than 48% of Americans have credit card debt. Others live from paycheck to paycheck. The alternative is becoming homeless. A lot of lay people are forced to take the vow of poverty, like it or not.

I live in a developing country where unsafety and crime are rampant. I sometimes think about emigrating to study in Europe, where, materially, things are generally better. Do you think it'd be rightful for me to do so?
Who are the poor? Is it the one standing on the street begging for money or is it the guy who has a job and struggles to make ends meet for his family? If you aren't willing to help yourself and get a job (or two) then why should I help you? Been tossing these questions around for a while now.
Well are you giving in a disciplined way to the deserving poor or are you avoiding giving altogether by saying people aren't deserving. It's okay to target your giving but you need to give. You might choose to give to orphans, or the blind, or give money so people can start a business. Choose a cause you feel is worthy and support that.
@@kwkw5711 we give to feed my starving children due to their award winning stewardship and have hesitated giving to the church due to the gross amount of money that is paid out to sex abuse victims or used to pay for entitled children's activities

I try to give where it will be used best, but ultimately I try to live by this idea: if I give money to someone and they use it shamefully that reflects poorly on their character and they will have to reconcile that with God, but if I see someone in need and turn away in fear, selfishness, or pride then that reflects poorly on my character and I will have to reconcile with God. Therefore, don’t be consumed with the desire to give the most efficiently if it will get in the way of giving with love.

You cannot force your family to do anything but try your best to become holier yourself by selling as much of your stuff that you don't need and give money to the poor. That's what I have done and still am doing.

I have issues with how much to give my grown adult daughter who is a single mom and needs money all the time. I don’t know to what point I’m supposed to give or save? I have given her thousands of dollars over the years and it continues. But I don’t know where to draw the line does anybody have an answer?
Give from your heart with no expectations in return. If she has children to raise, she needs money. If you have a bit of extra and you can spare it, and you know it will make a difference in her life then give what you can. If you feel resentful or if she is abusing of the gift coming her way, then that is a different conversation all together.
What to do with your money? Get married, buy a house, a car, have kids. Always help the church.
