      I actually think that Conan's point of being 100% Irish despite his ancestors being her for 160 years is extremely poignant in American culture. He's not saying it for no reason. He's saying it to explain American culture and Irish ancestry and culture in America. The history of Irish in America is actually very interesting and very important to the United States. I'm getting tired of Europeans saying that Americans aren't associated with their ancestry. You can't possibly imagine what our ancestry means to Americans.

What connection does he have with Ireland except that someone in his family got on a boat from there in the 19th century? Why is Conan asking a man from Republic of Ireland about uk audiences? I know he has done UK television but Why not ask him about Irish audiences since he's Irish!! It seems that uk guests always seem to make out that uk audiences are uptight and don't know how to have a good time. The reason we don't whoop and cheer every five minutes is because we want to hear the story and not have to wait for the audience to shut up!!

    I think the main difference between the two is, America only understands its own subtlety, and they are often too literal. That means not understanding other people's subtle joke, they will take it literal, therefore not understanding.
    This interview was an example of that.
    When Dylan said, "They drop this macro-net of feelings all over you and say 'tat's how I am, see if you can stand up now'". Conan then laughs and says, "Sounds awful"!
    When you have to stop and think about a joke, deciphering it's meaning, you haven't got it.

    It's very strange hearing Conan tell an actual Irishman how irish he is. Talking about a country he has no expierience of, a people he's never been around for more than just a few days on holiday. He said he's not at all 'diluted' but he said his family 'his people' have been in America for 160 years. You have to go back generations before you're in this country he's so fond of that he knows nothing about. My ancestors lived here nearly two centuries ago therefore I have the personality traits of them and their countrymen.

  • @IcarianX
    @IcarianX 3 года назад +1

    Genes and ancestry definitely do not determine personality or culture. Conan may be 100% genetically Irish, but he's 100% culturally American, which is exactly how he should be. It would be very sad if Irish Americans hadn't moved on from the culture of the poor, repressed, conservative Catholics of 140 years ago. Irish people have moved on and so have Irish Americans, down their own distinct paths over many generations, in very different environments.

    As an Irishman born in Ireland, it embarrasses me that the 'Irish Nazis' are so prevalent on the internet. Heaven forbid somebody who wasn't born on this particular island would claim to be part of the Irish master-race! Grow up folks. O'Brien's ancestors were overtly celebrating Irish culture in America when our ancestors were still doffing the cap to the ascendency landlords. And when we finally did start to make progress as a nation, that was partly because Irish Americans never forgot where they came from and gave us the money and support we needed. God bless them.

    IMHO, for American audiences, the likes of Kevin James is welcomed, to say at least, acceptable. Whilst in the UK, the likes of Kevin James will not cut it, they’ll probably burn him in the stakes. Just like with the American late night hosts, the only really funny one was Craig Ferguson. Guess where he’s from, aye! UK standard is higher, in fact much higher!

      However, I think you need to be more opened minded and thunk about how language is used differently from in different places. I. The US, where immigration was so prevalent, people would live in these super secluded neighborhoods where it was only Irish, or only Italian, and so they would call themselves that… because that’s how they differentiated themselves. But they don’t mean they’re actually from Ireland. Or from Italy. It means that in the context of northeastern cities with al these different ethnicities, their “Irish” or “Italian”. Meaning that’s the neighborhood they’re from. So stop being obtuse and thinking someone with a Harvard degree thinks he’s “from Ireland.”
