    This was my favorite book of the year. I was haunted. I felt all the feelings. I immediately read it again. I tend to love VE Schwab in general, but she’s outdone herself here.

    I loved this, but I struggled with Addie at the end, I felt she became as petty as Luc. And .. I actually really liked Luc. He was darkness and of course he was not going to be super lovely all the time! She should have thought properly about her deal, she blamed him for a lot, yet she was equally to blame. I loved that she enjoyed the little things and made it all worthwhile, I loved that Luc was exactly what he should have been. I liked Henry did learn a lot from being with Addie, and the admiration he desired so much in the end was just fickle to him and really didn’t mean as much as he thought it did.

    This was such a perfect qurantine book to read for me. A daily reminder that in between all the horrible stuff happening around there are moments of quite joys and little happiness. "I saw a pink elephant the other day" is one of my all time favourite book quotes now. The idea that there is always going to be something new or magical waiting to be discovered, that life is worth living for these beautiful moments of discovery. This book just *chefs kiss*

    Honestly, Henry was what got me the most. I related to him too much with the depression and anxiety and feeling so deeply and feeling like you’re never enough. I felt a little personally attacked by his deal because that’s exactly the kind of deal I would make. Honestly this might be my second favorite book I read this year.

    For me, this is the first time I have seen my experience with mental health portrayed in a book. I'm not always mentally down and I do have periods of contentment, clarity and even happiness. But then, often for a few months at a time, I will suffer periods when my mental health is on the floor. I self sabotage, have no sense of self worth and feel incapable of experiencing happiness (even in moments that should be joyous) at these times.
    I loved how Henry's whole character embodied this, and the ways Schwab writes him to try talk himself down from the 'storms'. I also loved the way she presented the fluidity of life and how there will never really be certainty.
    I can understand why others, especially those that enjoy heavy plot driven books, may not enjoy it. But personally, I loved every moment lost in each of these characters' lives.

    I finished this book last night, and I’m still feeling a lot of things that I can’t even articulate. I gave it 5 stars even though I didn’t think I would because I struggled with the pacing at certain points and had a couple of minor complaints here and there, but in the end, I just couldn’t bring myself to rate it anything less than 5 stars. It touched me to the core and I thought the ending was perfect. It’s wasn’t really a happy one, but it felt right. I loved this book❤️

    • @afreen610

      I felt the same! There were points when I felt it dragged a little, or would force myself through a tad. But despite that I couldn't bare to rate it anything less than 5 stars, and wouldn't even know what bits she could cut out (it all felt important for character development).

    I lovedddd Addie LaRue! I also felt the quiet vibes like Starless Sea, which is part of why I loved it so much. I was a little more invested in the modern day timeline than in some of the historical events, I think because Henry felt like a relief to meet after Luc (and was more relatable for me). But I definitely want to reread it, knowing about Henry's deal and Addie's ending, because I know I missed some things along the way and I want to enjoy that knowledge.

    This book is easily up there with the entire Poppy War series and The Name of The Wind in terms of my favorite books of 2020. I have loved VE Schwab for a long time, Vicious being my favorite book of all time, and this book just blew me out of the water. I’m an Enneagram 4 and I felt like this book absolutely spoke to me. I felt like she personally made this book for me, so thank you, Victoria, for this gift. I’m so happy you loved it. I felt my soul in this book and I want everyone to love it as much as I do.

    I agree with everything you said in this review! I really loved the book as well and it felt very impactful to me personally. That universal fear of time running out hit me like a ton of bricks and I loved the exploration of that through both Addie, who is so afraid of it first but then ends up having all the time in the world, and Henry, who has so little of it.

    Just finished it 5 minutes ago and it's not only the best book I read in 2020, but best book I've read in a long time. So beautifully written and as someone who deals with mental health and has lived enough to go through such happiness and tragedy, I just found it so damn real and raw and honest. And beautifully tragic.

    I just finished reading it a few minutes ago and I am in LOVE. I honestly can’t wait to read it again.
    It read like it would make an amazing indie film: very organic, very personal. I know for some it’ll feel slow but for me I love going deep into the characters and living through them. I loved each character because they all felt so real. The New York environment and vibe was 100% spot on!
    I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. Thank you for making this video ☺️

    I loved the book. There was a point in the beginning where it felt a tad repetitive, but then Henry was introduced and it picked up again. I loved the pacing of the book. Short, yet impactful chapters. I cared about all the characters and they had a purpose. I like how you described it as quiet. Definitely a book I will reread. I think V.E. Schwab did a wonderful job executing the story she wanted to tell.

    I absolutely loved this book! Personally, I felt like the story could have done without the very last scene with Addie and Luc, but listening to you speaking it, it actually makes more sense to me. I love how gently heartbreaking Addie´s story is, and that V.E. Schwab didn´t shy away from the nastier implications of the curse (like the prostitution, for instance). I would have loved to read even more about Addie´s life throughout the centuries, but it was still a damn good book!
    Also, this edition is my favourite of all of them because it is both very simple and elegant (like the story itself), and it´s the only one that resembles the Addie book in the story. All of the UK ones have V.E. Schwab´s name in giant letters on both the cover and the spine, which feels a bit ironic given the fact that there is a very specific description of what the book should look like. This one is just perfect ❤️❤️❤️

    That’s really interesting! I think for me the book really falls flat in its characters. A lot of the time I had no proper understanding of who Addie, Luc, Bea or Robbie were and that we were constantly being show just a single character trait personified. Addie in the beginning discussing how marriage and children make women wilting flowers also frustrated me so much especially considering the position where she ends up, which for me personally was something fairly frustrating. To me it read aa though Luc was never going to forget her or let her go. It felt like her plan was so useless because across the last 310 years Luc has always been there and always been patient and as fickle as he is the way it read was that Addie was a new constant in his life that he’d never had and would do anything to keep. I also absolutely hated Robbie and Bea’s roles. Every time Addie saw Bea she’d spew the same words, “she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen and she’s BLACK” it just felt like the literary equivalent of “my friend is black, i’m not racist.” I also really hated how lgbt themes were handled, which is so annoying bc VE Schwab is gay but it felt so :/ like Robbie’s character hinges on the fact that he’s the jealous gay ex who hates that his pansexual ex is with a woman. Like … that was so unnecessary. Bea felt like window dresser black lesbian, she had no character outside of doing her thesis. I feel like it would’ve been so cool to explore the idea that memory is so powerful because it was clear Bea KEPT REMEMBERING Addie and it made me so 😫 whenever she would just let the occurrence slip away. I also really disliked how Addie is with 3 different men who make such an impact on her life and then Sam, the only women felt so half baked, like we barely get a chapter where Remy, Luc, Henry and that other dude … TOBY! Toby was his name lmao, all get these like long lasting overarching feelings of pieces of Addies life. Another aspect that kind of frustrated me was that Henry is coded as pansexual on page but during his like escapade where he does drugs and has a bunch of sex he only has sex with women. Like idk that detail to me just felt so off, considering it’s made a point in the book that he is pan. I also really hated the ending, something about Addie giving up her life freedom and life to an eternal abusive darkness that she realistically has no will over (see: the scene when he turns into that gigantic ravenous monster made of darkness). Ahhhhh idk man this book was really just not for me 🤣

    • @lilithcarter
      @lilithcarter 3 года назад +1

      I heard it on audiobook, so i think I lost a bit of the details of the book, but I actually enjoy it. I have to admit that I'm not sure what do you mean by Bea always saying the same thing ?? Bea is supposed to be annoying and a bit fake, at least that's how I interpreted. Then Robbie didn't hate Henry being with a woman, Robbie hated that Henry moved on and "loved" someone else so quickly. I actually like the ending because Addie her self was insufrible like "I don't want to be tie to anyone, I want to be free..." basically "I'm not like other girls" just to finished in her worse possible nightmare. The author is hit or miss for me, but I enjoy the book and it's flaws.

    For me, where the mental health lacked was that Henry was severly depressed for the majority of what was shown of his life even before his girlfriend broke up with him. He had an understanding of it on his own, but his sister was the one to give him the pills and I feel like with professionnal help, his self medicating problem and the fact that he felt like he was directionless could've been worked through in a much more compelling way than here we go with your girlfriend's life story sell that shit and all your problems will be fixed.

    • @ThoughtsOnTomes
      @ThoughtsOnTomes  3 года назад +1

      I didn't really get the impression that his life was perfect after he sold the book. More that he had a different perspective, but that he would still go through moments of depression but be able to get through them when he felt he couldn't before.

  • @EmilyOlivieri
    @EmilyOlivieri 3 года назад

    I loved the start of addie and I loved henry as a character, i related to him so much with his moods and pansexually but once he was introduced i felt that the story began to get quite repetitive and predictable. I know that was kind of the point but I felt like if the book was set up differently, all the past stuff at the start of the book and the present at the end (with the exception of the new orleans stuff), it wouldn’t have felt so repetitive and I wouldn’t have gotten bored towards the end. I did love the start of the book and could have read hundreds more pages of that, the writing was absolutely beautiful, but the end totally ruined it for me. I figured out all the twists before making it to the half way point and felt Henrys ending was very cheap, i wanted something more poetic and devastating. I guess I took the end as being a bit self insert-y and cocky. I think I gave it 3/5 on goodreads.
