  • What is a Best Boy? A Gaffer? A Grip?
Mark Vargo, ASC, award-winning DP and VFX film professional, goes to the beginning of the scene - with the grip department.
Back in the day, Sailors, Cowboys, Loggers, Carpenters, Circus and Stage Riggers were the grip department; securing knots, building safe platforms for lights and camera personnel, and dolly tracks laid on inhospitable ground. Whenever anything goes awry on set, the grip department is who everyone looks to first. These are our "first responders" and NO movie can be made without them.

This is really great. I had the distinct honor and pleasure working as a grip on a film for Michael Kenner years ago. I thought I knew so much about being a grip. He taught me much more. As do all grips. Observing and learning how others work the craft is part of the whole deal and makes one a better grip. And it adds to the camaraderie within the department.

This was a very good explanation of what a grip does. There is a lot more that this film didn't cover but this is the gist of it. Good job. And that is coming from a guy who has been a Hollywood grip over 20 years now ;)
