    Hi Greg, just wanted to say a big thank you for all the effort and advice you have given us all with your campervan journey.
    My daughter has decided to buy a van and set it up as a self contained campervan here in NZ. I've sat down over the last couple of weeks and watched many of your videos on the conversion. Great to see you back. good to see you have gone beyond the basic with this install. I have gone the other way round to you . From Airbags on an ex ambulance to a leaf spring and airbags. There wer some original leaf springs that were light duty so the vehicle could lower itself to sit on its bumps to allow stretchers to be loaded. Anyway, just something that you might consider is a filter or a baffler maybe that allows so on deflation it goes down quietly without lots of hissing.

    Nice one Greg, although my bus has airbags all round I envy the ability to control them independently for levelling on site - especially with a cute remote !

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 2 года назад

      there are ways to do it on a bus, there is a system that uses small electrical actuators that mount to the frame in place of the anchor point that the air suspension height control valve's control rod connects to that allows you to move the control rod, inflating or deflating the air bag as desired. some are manually operated and some do automatic leveling using a sensor built into the controller. only problem is that bus suspension systems tend to be leaky so you need a small automatic air compressor to maintain pressure in the suspension system's air tank in order to keep the bus level.

    Nice job!!, Did mine a while back but last month paranoia kicked in after watching some sprinter chassis crack vids on youtube with airbags fitted i was going to get rid of them and replace them with leafs springs. ended up fitting 5ton leafs and kept the airbags as when the vehicle is unloaded with the leafs its a rough ride shakes the van apart so kept the airbags to maintain stability when unloaded. But when the van is fully loaded which is always on outings its an awesome drive can't feel any bumps or potholes at all in the rear and i let the air out of the bags fully so they act as super bump stops. 5ton leafs make the rear end look like a 4x4 from outside always, even when fully loaded and i would say way more clearance than the airbags fully pumped but without the worry of chassis cracks. Greg i would say get yourself some leafs even if its 1 add on leaf and also change the front shocks with bilstien or more expensive brand trust me makes a world of difference on the front no more bouncing around over every speed hump or pothole. !!

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  2 года назад +2

      From the videos I have seen the bags have been pumped up way too much so it’s forcing the load all onto one point. Instead of using them slightly inflated as an assist.

  • @flyovercounty1427
    @flyovercounty1427 2 года назад +1

    Great video. Adding the individual pressure control really rounds out the system. These air springs add spring capacity to the vehicle. Sometimes the dampers (shock absorbers) need to be re tuned to match the new spring rate if you travel roads which have a lot of "vertical undulations" (we call them "frost heaves") to keep the springs under control.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  2 года назад

      I only put just a small amount of air in the bags so they just assist the other systems and not take over. 👍🏼

    Great thanks, will help a lot of people. Air is the way to go, much more comfortable.
    Couple of observations:
    That lovely high pressure tank will get badly corroded by winter salt.
    If the van isn't the same weight on each side, it will need different pressure in each bag.
    My Iveco with factory system needed new bags at the last Tuev (MOT). Expensive, but massive improvement. Looks as if the rubber in the bags adds to the damping from the shocks. Darned thing is very bouncy at the front, so probably need new shocks. Did you notice anything like this?
    Just a hint for people buying a van with factory system. I think they all have independant systems for each side, self levelling. But no manual control to adjust lean on camp sites. However can adjust rear height for front/rear unevenness in the site.

    Great upgrade, i fitted a basic rear bag system to a 2003 Fiat Ducato based coachbuilt motorhome as it always looked low at the back and wallowed a bit on corners. got it from Ebay for about 250 quid. easy to fit, just unscrewed the old bumpstops and fitted the bags on place using the old mounting holes, ran the air lines into the gas locker where i mounted the gauge and the air valve, only ever used 20psi but made a mass of difference to the stance of the van and the cornering, felt a lot more stable, and stopped it bouncing about when inside the van and moving about. ideal for basic levelling of the van when parked as well by adding or removing air. considering putting a set on my alko chassised current motorhome, but will probably have the compressor this time.

    Another great video. Very informative. One thing to be aware of is that the condensate in your air tank and the automatic dump valve fitted to get rid of it can freeze in very cold weather. In Motorcoach's the airbag suspension will level the bus port and starboard and greatly reduce the pitch in a hard braking situation. I suspect this leveling kit is a tad complex to install. This was another quality install by Greg Virgoe, nicely done.

      motorcoaches/buses have height control valves installed at each airbag location to automatically correct ride height, it sounds like a complicated system but it's actually quite simple and is all mechanical with no electrical controls needed. because large vehicles already have an airbrake system, adding air suspension becomes a very simple thing.

    as a pro truck and auto technician i have mixed feelings about auxillary airbags.. i think they are great to have on a vehicle that occasionally gets loaded up close to the maximum limits, but if a vehicle is being modified to run heavy all of the time a better solution is to replace the springs that are in the vehicle with ones that can handle the additional weight better over an extended period of time. in many cases it doesn't cost more and might cost less than an airbag system and the vehicle will handle better, and it won't have the additional weight of the airbag system components along with the additional complexity and potential for breakdowns.

    I was told that the standard van suspension was never intended to be loaded close to full 100% of the time. A standard van for delivery is filled, driven and unloaded. It does not sit and drive close to max load 100% of the time. Hence the air bags are definitely something everyone should consider.

    The 2 stage bags which i have on our iveco daily only raises the Van by about 10cm, its hard to make a big difference when the ground is very uneven, we still use the ramps lol. Ideally a 3 stage air bag would be ideal as it will raise the bags to about 15cm. We keep our bags at 5Bar because the guy who sold us the bag says that its max bar is 6. We also find that the pressure is always fluctuating as you drive, especially when you go over a bump etc lol

    It would of been easier if you removed the two back wheels to fit the air bags . Greg if you get time this is just a thought I would put a T in your air line pipe and fit a tap for a air line to blow your tyres up if you ever need to with you having the air tank . The upgrade to the weight of the van from a class 4 which I think would be a class 7 is more expensive and also more intense if the van is still under 3.5 tons if I was you I would not go down that road even if your license covers you to drive it when you upgrade your vehicle you will then go on VOSA list of vehicles and you will be more likely to get a pull for a road safety check along with other HGVs on our roads . I don’t know with it being classified as private if you would also have to comply with HGV laws and have your van have a road safety check every 6 weeks which will also be a expense to consider I have worked with HGV vehicle most of my life . I would look into it before you go down that road , havering said all that . It’s another great video and I hope you enjoy your trip around Europe.
