Sam Neill was great in this. The only problem was the lame ending, and by the time you get there you're kinda rooting for Sam Neill. The movie had trouble scaling the story up to a global political scale and the weird crowd of extras in the quarry feels small. In the end the Antichrist isn't any more evil than your average corporate CEO or techgiant tyrant.
Omen III is one of those big what-ifs of the late 70s- early 80s horror genre, because Richard Donner was supposed to come back to direct it. He was called to replace Richard Lester as director of Superman II, however, so his schedule wasn't available anymore. Imagine Sam Neill as Damien Thorn with the original Omen director in seat, it could have been so, so, so much better!
I love this movie, but I also think of it as "The Keystone Priests Meet the Devil". As serious as the movie is, the death of all of the priests is really a comedy of errors.
The only thing that made me wonder was the ending. Even if he wouldn't have been stabbed, he was basically going in to a match that he would loose. He lost to Michael and God is infinitely more powerful than Michael, so this strikes me as someone like a small boy talking trash to a prime Mike Tyson. It just isn't going to end well for him.
Thank you for giving this movie a VERY POSITIVE review. The Omen trilogy is the strongest horror, with each film giving its own contribution and worthy. All 3 actors have nailed the role as Damien. This is how I first saw 'Sam Neil' playing 'Damien Thorn'. Then 'Riley ace of Spies.'' 'In the Mouth of Madness' and 'Event Horizon' are great movies. Sam Neil is a superb actor. Have the soundtrack. I adore horror scores.
It would have been interesting to see what Damien would have done in his “Lad” years, so in between Omen 2 and Omen 3, as this is the most unpredictable time in a young man’s life in terms of behaviour, hormones etc. Would have made a hell of a film. Pun intended.
Hello there. Why is it that lately, most of your videos are labeled incorrectly? Hence, this is labeled revisited, whereas in the video, you call it The Black sheep. Hope I'm not the only one who noticed this. Still love your videos. Take care 🙂
Sorry. We put it in the video description. NOTE: Hey fellow horror fiends, we are rebranding some of our shows in the name of growing our audience on RUclips; hence yes; this video is a BLACK SHEEP episode.
There was in the sequence of novels an Omen IV & V that followed on from the plot of the films (but totally unrelated to the film the 90's made for TV version). It was a long time ago since I read them but I remember enjoying them. It used the mentioned plot point that using just one Dagger would just kill his body, all of them had to be used to destroy the soul and he's subsequently reborn. His mortal conception followed on from how Damien & Kate were "intimate" in Omen III. (I must have been a bit naïve when I first saw Omen III, as his reason for flipping her over didn't click till it was pointed out in the novelisation),.
The scene is a twisted parallel to the last temptation of Jesus Christ: what if had let himself fall in carnal love with Mary Magdalene? The whole subplot of Damien with Kate and Peter is reminiscent of Damien trying to explore what it'd be to be a family man, a husband, a lover, and a father. Damien is at first making love to Kate, like an ordinary man would, but when he gets that he cannot go on that path, he turns violent on her and rapes her anally.
This movie is good for a second sequel, and I find it ties up the trilogy quite nicely. However, for many years, I was traumatised by the burnt-out baby shown here, that shit really scared the crap out of me.
It doesn't tie up the trilogy nicely. Damien never really rises to power and fulfills a thing in Revelation. He's suppose to be the Antichrist and yet he never rises to power and claim the title. There needed to be another movie or two afterwards showing this and then we have the second coming of Christ. This movie just rushes through everything and leave so much of his intended arc out.
@@devontehuntley6274 Good point, but I think Hollywood would never permit the Antichrist to come fully into power, but be thwarted by another divine event, that of the second coming of Christ. The first two movies had no indication of a second coming of Christ whatsoever, but to be honest, I don't know what behind-the-scenes events were going on to suddenly force this upon the series. It's like the filmmakers simply didn't want to piss off religious people.
@@Foebane72 The second coming of Christ is something very heavily taught in the Bible though and the first two movies SHOULD have mentioned it, but it would of course be brought up here in the third because Damien is an adult and closer to his reign. Things like the daggers made no sense because Damien is meant to rule. We see his face plastered on walls like he's the IT antichrist, yet he's defeated and doesn't accomplish anything as "Damien", but able to take another form like Alexander York in Part 4 and probably able to accomplish things in that lifetime, which doesn't add up. I also don't get the whole Christ reborn thing because that storyline was left hanging. Was he truly reborn as a baby or no because all the babies born Damien suspected was such all get killed by the end so where is this Christ child? Also, the Bible never teaches he'd come back as a baby again. The makers kind of did piss off religious people because they didn't really follow exactly what the book of Revelations teaches about the end times and the antichrist's rule and cut things out and short tremendously.
FANTASTIC score by Jerry Goldsmith. He really outdid himself with the last entry. Of course the scores to "The Omen" and "Damien: Omen II" are awesome(I tend to favor the score to the 2nd entry the most). The orchstrations by Arthur Morton, the conducting by Lionel Newman and the performance by The National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus on all 3 films are beyond excellent.
This was Sam Neil’s big break. And he looked perfect as adult Damien Thorn. Neil is a actor of all seasons and I always wanted him To play the Doctor(Doctor Who). However this movie is very much a unintentional comedy as the priest attempting to kill Damien was like a Monty Python sketch as a matter of fact it is like a Monty Python movie!!!!
@@Concreteowl no, Wile E. Coyote actually survives. But the stupid, incompetent mistake that these Monks attempt on Damien which in turn just them killing themselves is Monty Python. They should have cast Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones etc. in those roles.
Nice review. Agree it's an underrated movie but let's not get carried away. The first half is well on par with the first two movies but in the last 30 mins, it really loses its momentum and fissles out to an unsatisfactory ending. Sam Neill is brilliant though. Peter and Susan are the weak points.
I have to wonder... If in this movie, they have Damien the President or President elect, the most popular ever, and made him psychologically break down by tragedy - Could he have narratively broken down and abandoned God, started wars out of spite and bitterness, and hurt the masses intentionally and fulfilled the prophecy without the stereotypical bad-guy role? I feel like that would've been a much more compelling character arc. Unfortunately I don't think many writers thought like that back in the day this was made.
The end scene was filmed at a place called Fountains Abbey which is around an hour drive from where i live. I went there last year and its an amazing building
Always felt this one was a let-down. I like Sam Neil but always felt he wasn't sure just how to play an adult Damien and went for over-acting on some scenes, which took away my enjoyment. In the first film Damien was just a child, so the evil had to come from around him which kept the character mysterious and foreboding for the future. In the second film he was coming into his own, with adolescence and coming of age in realizing his destiny. That was a decent journey. However, with the third film the mystery and foreboding are pretty much over as he's an adult and now has to ring in the apocalypse. That's difficult to pull off no matter who wrote the script without looking like a moustache-twirling evil villain, who can become quite one-dimensional. I always felt Sam didn't quite pull it off and so the movie always left me unfulfilled.
The Omen franchise is underrated. As far as Omen IV, I remember it being released as part of a box set with all 4 films, but you couldn’t buy it separately until many years down the road. Thoughts on The Omen remake with Julia Styles?
The remake is pointless...waste of time although not as bad as the little known (for good reason) remake of Rosemary's Baby with Zoe Saldana as Rosemary.
This movie was sort of lackluster. I don't mind seeing Damien as an adult and liked they aged him even if it did mess up the timeline a bit. The sequel already did that pushing the first movie back to the 1960s and this one pushes them both back to the 1950s! Plot points aren't clear or just sloppy: Jesus Christ is apparently reborn but that isn't quite clear since the last remaining baby that's supposedly the chosen one, that of Damien's assistant Harvey and his wife Barbara, ends up dead when Barbara burns him with an iron, and then the end scene where Damien is killed with one dagger and the whole world is suddenly at peace given all the Bible scripture display telling us so? Um, Damien didn't fulfill a damn thing in Revelation for that to even happen so that didn't make much sense nor was all seven daggers used on him. The continuity between this and the others was pretty lacking. I get this is twenty years later so the events of those movies aren't gonna be brought up like that but this was pretty stand-alone. Nothing is said about the aftermath of the second movie other than the daggers being found at the Thorn Museum, but who took care of Damien after his aunt and uncle died? That's not addressed. I would have loved to have seen Carl Bugenhagen pop up. The character appeared in the first two, so it's only fitting he appeared here too besides just being mentioned. Yes, he died in the sequel, but they could have shown him in a flashback to maybe before the events of the first movie where we see him and younger Father De Carlo together talking about the coming Antichrist. De Carlo knew Bugenhagen and we would have saw them together at one point and this further develops De Carlo's arc as he was apparently around the whole time watching Damien's rise to power since the events of the first movie, yet he's not brought up until this movie. So yeah, this sequel needed some more fine tuning and better development with characters, story-points, continuity, and action sequences. Even with the touch ups, I don't think it should have been the end since we're just now seeing him as an adult and getting closure to his destiny. We had two movies as him as a kid, to it's only fair we had at most two of him as an adult. Omen III should have set up Damien taking over the world and then Omen IV is about him fulfilling Revelation and we could find out more of his life between Parts 2 and 3. Then we end where Christ comes back and there's the battle of Armageddon and whatever else the end times teaches will happen. The version we have is far from being a crispy and clear conclusion you point out at 1:12. We see Damien die, but the execution of it was poor and not even conclusive as he was only killed by one dagger, so his spirit would live on to reincarnate as Omen IV showed us hence that movie's existence.
I saw all these on their cinema releases, and remember thinking the ending was kind of a let down. This because in the first movie it's established that the 7 daggers need to be all used; the first one to the heart, followed by the others, shaping a cross. Then...only one could do the job. Also, I thought it was kind-a corny showing Jesus like that. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it; a legendary antichrist trilogy.
He's "running for Senate in '84" ...so, The Omen (1976) is set 30 years earlier? Seems like a rushed cash grab. Maybe they should leave out saying years. That way people watching the movie don't do the math about Damien and think "gee, he went from 13 to early 30's in the span 3 years". Especially, in sequels.
The movie is just mediocre. The script was really poor and you wont be engaged in the story. It starts rather well and you might think you'll see some powergrab and big scenes but that is not the case. It is all done in prologue and then it turns into quite boring drama that would fit on theatre stage but in the movie it sucks. It is the kind of the movie where you wait for something to happen but it never does.
The Omen trilogy is still my favourite trilogy. Bollocks too the godfather, and the original star wars trilogy everything to his or her taste. Note I didn't include Omen 4
Tbh as much as i would love this to be a great finale to such a unique, terrific horror story... it just isnt. Sam neils great. The premise is epic. The story is disappointing and underwhelming at best.
Sam Neill also plays, Cardinal Wolsey, in The Tudors. “If I had served God as diligently as I have done the King, he would not have given me over in my grey hairs.”
I do like this movie. And I find it interesting how they focused on a different stage in Damien´s life. If anything, the way he dies does not make sense by the rules they established. I don´t understand how the sequels (and this one in particular) weren´t better received. PS I did some search and 2 books were written that continue the story. So, it seems, that the reason why the sex was so rough with the reporter is because he... did not do it the "proper" way with a woman. And, still, she got pregnant; and...believe it or not, it can happen in EXTREME rare ocassions in real life. So that´s the story of the fourth book. The fifth deals with Damien´s daughter. And no, it isn´t the story of the direct to TV movie. The books were written either after that was done or prior. Don´t remember. A shame they did not get to finish the proper story. Because it makes sense since to properly kill Damien the 7 daggers were needed. I also seem to recall that the first 3 books are based on the movies.
I just rewatched this morning. When I was younger I hated part 3. I think it’s pretty good. Definitely better than the part 4 TV movie. The only thing I didn’t like was Damien was killed too easy at the end.
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals Hell fucking yeah. Damien accepted his destiny in Omen II with no problem. He took people out without remorse, Mark being the only exception. Damien is the man.
Can someone explain then why there was 7 knives to kill Damien from part 1-3 .And in the end she backstabs him with a single knife is enough for his death?? Did they just changed the story line?
I really do see Omen 1, 2 and 3 as all one film and I have to watch them all together in order to see them, like how many others see Lord Of The Rings. They all fit together so well.
I like the assembly cut better, but I also like the way Ripley originally jumps in and you actually see the queen better too. I'm actually not too crazy about the second one. I thought the Marines where too over the top and cheesy.
Would be a good series to see the Antichrist rise to power during seven years of the tribulation (maybe seven seasons) and watch the characters deal with the mark of the beast
The Omen The Final Conflict. IMHO it's a waste of a great cast it should've been made into two films where we do get to see Damiens power over the world and the monks struggle with their task to assassinate the Antichrist. The Damien series also missed this opportunity.
These three films proved that gratuitous nudity and excessive gore are NOT necessary when you have superb casting and epic story-telling. The thing is though, that despite that these three films are very faithful to their novel counterparts, this was not the “final”entry. There are actually FIVE novels in total and NO, that “Awakening” train wreck was absolutely NOTHING like the novel, “Omen IV: Armageddon 2000” is either. The fifth novel “Omen V: The Abomination” never saw the light of day because of it. Maybe with the release of the prequel “The First Omen” these five novels can ALL be properly done and not deviate from the source material either. Side note: I never see “Dr. Allan Grant”, I only see “Damien Thorn”.
When I saw a video of one of Elon's Space X Rocket in action, the crowds that gathered reminded me of the crowds that gathered for Damian in this movie???

Plus where is the false prophet who helps the anti-christ?
yeah it was crap the Daggers were supposed to placed in a certain way
Damien talking to his followers has a fresh feeling since 2016.
I don’t like conflicts… I don’t like any kind of breakfast cereal 🥣
The omen 3 and the exorcist 3 are classics!
Love this one. It's a really cold and vicious flick.
No video for Damien: The Omen 2? It would’ve been nice.
Then 'Riley ace of Spies.''
'In the Mouth of Madness' and 'Event Horizon' are great movies.
Damien: The College Years could have been a fun film a cross between Animal House and The Exorcist
The 4th is okay for what it is, but it is essentially a soft remake of the 1st one only the granddaughter of Satan is gender-switched!
Neil is a actor of all seasons and I always wanted him
To play the Doctor(Doctor Who).
However this movie is very much a unintentional comedy as the priest attempting to kill Damien was like a Monty Python sketch as a matter of fact it is like a Monty Python movie!!!!
More Wile E Coyote
@@Concreteowl no, Wile E. Coyote actually survives. But the stupid, incompetent mistake that these Monks attempt on Damien which in turn just them killing themselves is Monty Python. They should have cast Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones etc. in those roles.
@@digipeeper 🤣
I learned about your channel from a copy of the beast within the fog, great stuff!
The end scene was filmed at a place called Fountains Abbey which is around an hour drive from where i live. I went there last year and its an amazing building
Very cool
This reminds me of To The Devil A Daughter. Two great films with lame endings.
Sam Neil is great as Damien, though and the score is epic
I saw this as a 9-year-old in the theatre. Seen it many times since
I saw all these on their cinema releases, and remember thinking the ending was kind of a let down.
Great films, I love the daggers, would make great memorabilia
Watched Possession a few months ago. That film was entracing! Good stuff.
Alien III and Godfather III are very underrated!
Also in Batman returns the penguin goes after the first born sons
Totally agree wirth you! A real forgotten gem imo.
Let's hope they finally make the long talked about prequel.
All joblo channels are fire! 🔥🔥
Thanks: had never bothered with this one before. Watching it when i get home tonight!
Enjoy! Can't go wrong with Sam Neill.
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals and now i have the urge to re-watch the series and claim that they're Xmas movies: it's kinda the same story! 😂
I like the bit where the guy's head and arms come out of the TV and he lifts the girl up smashing her head into the TV
I hope you're just horrible at trolling and NOT horrible at remembering what movie you are talking about.
I agree. I remember being so disappointed by this one.
They should have followed how it's told in the bible it's better. They could have squeezed out 2 more good movies.
PS
I did some search and 2 books were written that continue the story.
I thought this was good movie, but not a great one! They could have done a lot more with it.
I just rewatched this morning. When I was younger I hated part 3. I think it’s pretty good. Definitely better than the part 4 TV movie. The only thing I didn’t like was Damien was killed too easy at the end.
Damien was more badass in Omen II. Sam Neill is an excellent actor, but Damien was more cool in Omen II
Part 2 needs more love, IMO
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals Hell fucking yeah. Damien accepted his destiny in Omen II with no problem. He took people out without remorse, Mark being the only exception. Damien is the man.
Sam Neill was awesome for this role. I loved the entire original 3 series.
one of the best horror movie series ever.
"You know, because the film needs to be over 30 minutes." 🤣
Sucks we don't see Damian and Jesus fighting each other DBZ style.
Alien 3: Assembly Cut is the best film in the series. Fight me.
It's good but no way best in the series.
I like the assembly cut better, but I also like the way Ripley originally jumps in and you actually see the queen better too. I'm actually not too crazy about the second one. I thought the Marines where too over the top and cheesy.
Haven't seen it in ages, need to revisit it as I don't remember much of it & it was rarely played as opposed to the first two.
So, Dr. Wier is Damien!
Omen 3: Dr. Grant gone mad!
The baby slaying scene in this movie still makes me uncomfortable and quite disturbed. Well done, Omen III
These movies scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I wanted to watched them but wouldn't dare to do it.
the way they killed off Damian was so stupid
Sam niel very very good actor
When I saw a video of one of Elon's Space X Rocket in action, the crowds that gathered reminded me of the crowds that gathered for Damian in this movie???
I always felt like this was a good movie but remember that the ending seemed rushed. And yes, Possession is one of my favorites. I actually like both versions of it
Seems you forgot to mention Jerry Goldsmith's powerful and unforgettable scores which adorned all three films. And, I forgot to hit subscribe and thumbs up. Both of those omissions can be easily corrected. You first.
FULL MOVIES TO WATCH
i always forget Sam Neill was a "star" before he was ever considered a "star" ! " My Brilliant Career", "the Omen 3", "Possession", "Reilly, Ace of Spies "and all his Aussie and New Zealand work, before he did things like "Jurassic Park". his big budget work and his independent work makes him one of those rare actors to bridge the gap successfully of many types of cinema and tv. basically... he's film royalty!
*The Omen is a HIGHLY UNDERRATED horror trilogy* . It's actually the most concise horror trilogy... it tells it's arc and it's done. I like Sam Neil in the role.
The ending kinda confuses me... sweet baby Jesus instantly grows into a mystical adult? Nevertheless the Omen trilogy sticks the landing.
I rewatched this a few months ago, I like the Omen movies, haven’t watched 4 for a very long time.
I haven’t seen it at all. Directed by Dominiqu-Hack Job-Girard of Halloween 5 fame.......no thanks 😂
@@mtb5431 Fair enough! H5 wasn’t very good.
@@christopherwilliams5939 It pretty much ruined the original timeline. H6 was just the final nail in the coffin.
@@mtb5431 I get you but I much prefer H6 to H5 haha

Remember when they wanted to Sam Neil to be James Bond!
honestly I had no idea that 3 or 4 existed
