Most reactors don't get it. Like in Amish Paradise when he says, "There's no phone, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Caruso, it's as primitive as can be" is from the theme song to Gilligan's Island.
@@alexisrivera200xable I don't mean that he wasn't successful, I mean that people in general saw him as just a funny guy doing parodies instead of the truly talented artist that he actually is
Cliff, you might really enjoy "Dare to Be Stupid", "Tacky", and "Handy". I'd also recommend digging into his polka medleys, beginning with "Polkas on 45".
From what I remember, this was a request FROM Madonna. She had asked some friends if Weird Al would cover "Like a Virgin" with "Like a Surgeon" - and of course he couldn't say no! Some artists didn't like his take-offs (see Amish/Gangster Paradise), but Madonna maybe knew that any eyes & ears on Like a Surgeon would also help her song's charting and longevity. And it did.
Fun fact: Weird Al NEVER takes suggestions for his songs, to avoid lawsuits. "Like a Surgeon" is the exception, because Madonna herself came up with the "Like a Surgeon" concept, and suggested the song to him. She was one of the very first artists to recognize that, if Weird Al was parodying you, that means you had made it big in the music industry.
She made a joke in passing saying I wonder how long it will take for Weird Al to make a song called Like a Surgeon. He heard about this and decided why not. But from what I have heard no Madonna did not actually personally request this parody..
As AL tells it she was talking to her friend who happened to know ALs manager at the time and Madonna said she would love for him to parody like a virgin with like a surgeon. It's the only time he has ever taken a request for a song to do.
I still have a lot of his cassette tapes from the 80s & 90s.😂 "Another one rides the bus", "buy me a Cuisinart ", "i love rocky road" & "i lost on jeopardy" r a few of my favs lol 😉❤️
"Living With a Hernia" is a parody of "Living In America" which was the song James Brown did on Rocky III. The video is so close to the original but he makes fun of every element in the original video and its probably the funniest video Al has done. Definitely worth trying out.
- The video for 'Like A Virgin' featured a lion, so Al had one wandering around in his version too. 😄 - "The disgrace of the AMA, because my patients die before they can pay." 😆 - as others have said, Al has a load of great original songs too. 'Hardware Store' and 'This is the Life' are 2 really good ones. - Al also has a number of what he calls pastiches, parodies of an artist's style rather than a specific song. Examples include 'Dare to be Stupid' (parodying Devo) and 'Germs' (NIN) for example - as for direct parodies, there's 'The Saga Begin' (Star Wars themed parody of Day the Music Died), and 'Foil' (Royals parody)
I like how Al wasn’t afraid to do pastiches (or as he calls them, “style parodies”) of obscure artists that he liked. For example, he did not one, but TWO style parodies of Tonio K., a barely-remembered but very critically acclaimed singer/songwriter/musician who put out two kind of power pop-ish albums in 1978 and 1980, became a Christian, put out three very acclaimed and somewhat controversial (mainly his song “What Women Want,” which had the lyric “They want sex!”) Christian rock albums in the late 80’s, and then became a professional songwriter, whose songs were sung by people like Vanessa Williams.
Omg, I forgot the stretcher/gondola parallel.... the rolling on the floor was done so amazing. For a non-direct-parody I strongly suggest the live performance of the song Germs by him. It's a pastiche of Nine Inch Nails that he did in 1999 so he nails NIN & Trent's performances back in that era. Great great live bit.
It pairs very well with his hilarious “educational” short film about germs which aired on ALTV 1999. Al doesn’t narrate it (it’s narrated by a guy who sounds just like the narrators from those old educational films, which I think makes it even funnier), but I’m sure he wrote it. It’s made up of a bunch of clips from old 1950’s and ‘60’s educational films and basically teaches you how to become a Howard Hughes-style germaphobe.
Hi Cliff, glad to see you back on Weird Al again. If I may suggest an unusual one: Weird Al did the BEST-EVAR James Bond Movie opening credits for Leslie Nielsen's comedy "Spy Hard" (not an actual James Bond Movie). Would love to see you do a reaction to that one. If you can react to the actual movie's opening credits (the titles from the movie are removed from the music video that's on RUclips, and they shouldn't be!) that would be even better. Weird Al captures the essence of 60 years of Bond Films Theme Songs in that parody.
Some recommendations from a long time Al fan: Old school Al- "Dare to be Stupid" "Living With a Hernia" "Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung" "King of Suede" "Addicted to Spuds" "(This song is just) Six Words Long" "Good Enough for Now" "Good Old Days" "Money for Nothing/Beverley Hillbillies" "Stuck in a Closet with Vanna White" "The White Stuff" Modern Al - "Headline News" "Gump" "Taco Grande" "Craigslist" "Confessions part III" "Cavity Search" "Callin' in Sick" "Bob" "The Plumbing Song" "Phony Calls" "Ode to a Superhero" "Wanna B Ur Lovr" Polkas- "Hamilton Polka" "Angry White Boy Polka" "Polkarama" "Polka Power" "Polka Face" Obviously there are many more, but consider this a carefully curated selection of Al's genius in action.

Underrated? He was so famous and well liked that artists were saying they knew they had truly made it when Al made a parody of their songs.
