As an expert driver, I would say your technique and positioning were as could as could be expected. One thing I did notice, though, was that your air vents were not positioned optimally. I understand you're not an experienced racing driver like myself so I wouldn't expect you to know, but you're really missing out on an opportunity for increased performance. An expert driver using AVP (Active Vent Positioning) could save as much as 3-5s per lap depending on air temp and barometric pressure. Since traction control was giving you some issues, I would recommend pointing the vents as vertical as possible to increase your downforce. The mustang driver likely had their vents pointed straight back for increased speed and acceleration, which is why they were able to stay ahead of you. Keep practicing. You'll get there.
Yeah specially in Mclarens where you can downshift and upshift with the same paddle. Sorry Jason, I hope you get invited to another Mclaren test drive so you can execute it properly
Try using the mouse for the steering wheel. I'm not even kidding. Just make sure to turn off mouse acceleration in Windows and suitably turn up sensitivity in the game, else you'll be leaving the mousepad A LOT. But yeah, Xbox360 gamepads are good for that. Have fun being jealous at us, people who bought a $60 gamepad 10 years ago and it still barely works, just barely, but good enough! But it has meaty juicy triggers for all your acceleration and breaking needs, and analogue thumb sticks with 1024 distinct positions per axis... for all the control smootheness your fingers can muster... and if you drive over gravel, you'll feel it over the force feedback...
SicknessClips halfway through this joke I was like please tell me is literally going to explain this to him and you didn't disappoint. You sir are a scholar and a gentleman (though probably not looking at your screenname).
Hahaha loved the trollish nature you had with yourself, laughed when you said that's the actual race line the other guys just don't know it, and you can brake a lot easier by bumping into who's in front of you 😂 what a fun video. Bet you had a blast!
Everybody knows that you should use one hand for your smartphone to check Facebook, the other to hold your coffee and then steer with your knees. Since the knees are closer to your feet, and by that to the pedals, you are much more in touch with the car!
Your saying that even though he beat the pro driver despite having a shitload of AI drivers in his way, this test is somehow less sensible? Racing with AI is an obvious disadvantage, and he still had the best time.
Yes, but at the same time you see him having to feather the throttle quite often to avoid other cars, where if there weren't cars he would be able to floor it. also on the second turn, he guts quite hung up in a multi car collision, you see the leading cars get a few hundred feet away before he gets up to speed. Also there were times where he bumped the backs of cars while accelerating, which slows the rate of accelerations. All of these factors at least cancel out the extra bit he can slow down by crashing. It may even outweigh that factor.
PlokTheMasterGamer are you kidding? Of course it makes it senseless. The fact that he won anyway just proves that there were other extraneous variables at play; whether the game was trash, maybe the pro driver wasn't that pro, or perhaps the game car just wasn't set up the same as the real one--which I'm guessing it wasn't, due to the traction control (which in itself is farcical). Plus, he can cut corners in the game and use the AI for artificial braking as we saw. Even with a pro-gamer I'd expect it to be extremely close--perhaps the gamer would just nick it as he isn't restricted by fear, but not by a whole 6.5 seconds lmao.
"and we've learned absolutely nothing today" omg, I can see that joy and grin on your face when you said that! Can we have more videos like this please??????
Who was the professional driver? Some say he has no face, and that he can write a book. All we know is Ben Collins was involved in the development of Project Cars 2.
They did something similar on Top Gear. Jeremy Clarkson raced an NSX around Laguna Secca(sp?) in Gran Turismo and then in real life. Two main take a ways were: A) The video game let the car behave unrealistically, it would accelerate, brake and handle simply better than the real world allows. B) Driver skill/fear. It you mess up in a video game, you hit reset. If you mess up in real life, you either die, get hurt, or at the very least have a crashed race car that you're on the hook for.
In this case since he is testing again a professional driver B should not be a huge factor. And this means that A is. Which honestly does not make Project Cars 2 look that good.
Mormielo it's not a slam against the game, even realistic games are going to be slightly unrealistic with accelerating/decelerating handling etc. But isn't that what makes the game fun… and I think the fear thing would come into play just to a lesser degree, I imagine the driver might be able to go a little faster here or there, or brake a little later, but holds back somewhat because doing so would be out of his/her comfort zone, where as on the video game you don't have to worry about crashing.
Jason, you are the funniest driving engineer youtuber I know, thoroughly entertaining. As a non expert track driver I think your technique is fine because it works for you lol :)
Yeah, BMW driving hand position is one hand on the wheel and the other out the window palm facing down and drawing waves. Didn't you all see the commercials?
Now this is how you deal with sponsored content. Do what they ask, but make it different enough for your base content so it's clear what the purpose is. Love it.
NOW we're talking!!! I'm a sim racer at heart, spent too much money on that stuff. iracing and asseto corsa!!! Great Job on the real track, luv these videos!
@engineeringexplained Awesome video. Love you comedic voice over! Keep up videos like this one. Quite a few good laughs in there. Great job man keep it up!
The professional driver had some extremely unfair advantages. He had no slow chase car and he has driver assists turned off, so of course he would get a better lap time!
M4D AL3X My 2015 mustang GT often gets 29 to 30 mpg on the highway, so it's surprisingly economic. 435 HP, way better sound, more badass just for being a v8. The only reason to ever have an Ecoboost is if you truly can't afford the V8, which is totally cool, that's why it's there, but there isn't any benefit it has over the GT besides weight and a couple mpg.
Love this! Definitely woke me up this morning. Your commentary is the most entertaining part 😄 FYI, I was taught to drive with my thumbs in (like you are doing) on road course. Unfortunately, I took that technique to an autocross event and quickly broke my thumb. So there you are!
Hahahaha. I haven't watched one of your videos in a while this one gave me a huge laugh though. I love racing and sim racing! The ending was the best. And we all have learned absolutely nothing today.. :) Keep it up bud! Maybe next time they'll let you take the assists off.
Livenator: Exactly. In order to buy a car when I was 18 I used a simulator to learn how to drive a stick. It taught me how to drive the car, but the skill points didn't come until I actually started driving a real car. I wish he talked about the difference between driving a real McLaren and the game version of the McLaren. that's what I was actually interested in.
A few tips for ya: point all the air vents towards your face for additional cooling, shave your arms for better aero, and put your wee to the right as much as possible to get optimum balance. There's 10 seconds right there. The rest of the difference will have to come from learning to drive better.
I find it incredible that ecoboost was able to stay in front of you in any way. In corners possibly, but in a straight line with you pushing it all the way it seems virtually impossible.
"We have all learned absolutely nothing today"
That line was the best lmao
Khaled Hossam hahahahahahaha ikr
that cracked me up XD
That was what finally caused me to hit the like button.
That line got me.
Reminds me of Jeremy Clarkson xD
As an expert driver, I would say your technique and positioning were as could as could be expected. One thing I did notice, though, was that your air vents were not positioned optimally. Andrew Childs LMFAO😂😂😂😂
That is pure gold.
Your technique is atrocious. You should drive with the palm of one hand and the other should be outside the window looking cool.
Finally sound advice on the internets, thank you so much! Will correct for my next track day!
Yeah specially in Mclarens where you can downshift and upshift with the same paddle. Sorry Jason, I hope you get invited to another Mclaren test drive so you can execute it properly
S2MH
don't forget the sun shades and bubble gum
For real, driving like a Mr anderson

"we have all learned absolutely nothing today"
-An engineer
When the Engeneering lesson is over...
Today's lesson was getting to drive a cool car without actually learning anything.
I love his "I don't give a fuck" attitude in this video 😂😂
"We have all learned absolutely nothing today". I never thought that would ever happen in an Engineering Explained video.
TheMindGarage hahah you gotta love his honesty.
I think that was his dig at the sponsored clip.
Haha the commentary was great!
Thanks Matt! Great hanging out with ya THREE TIMES in a month!
You forgot to mention that you did the most important thing while driving a car, have fun!
Moral of the video: video games are easier than reality.
Just a little love tap XD
Yes, the commentary was good, made for some good laughs
PFFT! You think you're a bad gamer?
I play racing games with a KEYBOARD!
...send help plz
Bladed Angel ayyeee bladed angles
i used to use a keyboard then i bought a corded 360controller from a coworker for 10 bucks
YO, Its Bladed Angel!
Try using the mouse for the steering wheel.
I'm not even kidding. Just make sure to turn off mouse acceleration in Windows and suitably turn up sensitivity in the game, else you'll be leaving the mousepad A LOT.

Well, i tried to use a controller once and sucked so hard. I feel very satisfied with a keyboard.
3:46 - 3:58
"I appreciate your feedback."
No you don't. :)
know what sarcasm is?
M. H. Please explain
lol
I sensed a teenie tiny bit of sarcasm?
M.H. Explain in detail what you mean. Please do a video explaining it.
My grandpa died of driveraids and I don't appreciate you talking so lightly about it!
Driver aids in game = helps you in racing games, makes it easier
driveraids = like AIDS, but it's a pun relating to driver "aids"
You laughed though
SicknessClips halfway through this joke I was like please tell me is literally going to explain this to him and you didn't disappoint. You sir are a scholar and a gentleman (though probably not looking at your screenname).
I get your pun but I've come close to being killed by antilock brakes that mysteriously activated on dry pavement. So call me a driveraids survivor;)
Geoff Goldplum No son, he just had superherpes. Sorry for your loss.
I love his sarcasm
Cole Stewart
Didn't we all? **sarcasm* :D
lol
I'm guessing they would be pretty upset with you if you rammed the Mustang out of your way.
Hahaha loved the trollish nature you had with yourself, laughed when you said that's the actual race line the other guys just don't know it, and you can brake a lot easier by bumping into who's in front of you 😂 what a fun video. Bet you had a blast!

Totally!! LMAO!! ;-)
The sarcasm in this video had me cracking up!!
i love how he gets passive-aggressive about the comments
The preemptive strike.
Haha love the last comment ... what have we learnt today - nothing .. lol
Racing with AI made this test sensless
Your saying that even though he beat the pro driver despite having a shitload of AI drivers in his way, this test is somehow less sensible?
Racing with AI is an obvious disadvantage, and he still had the best time.
Buddy, that might be because he crashed therefore slowing him down better than brakes would and that's he can't die in a game
Yes, but at the same time you see him having to feather the throttle quite often to avoid other cars, where if there weren't cars he would be able to floor it. also on the second turn, he guts quite hung up in a multi car collision, you see the leading cars get a few hundred feet away before he gets up to speed. no duh. did you listen to the conclusion?
"We have all learned absolutely nothing today"
the video-game commentary was the best part
Your wearing your helmet backwards...
RTA MOTORSPORTS you're*
"and we've learned absolutely nothing today" omg, I can see that joy and grin on your face when you said that! Can we have more videos like this please??????
dude i havent watched your videos recently, but man it has greatly improved from what i remember!! good job man!
Who was the professional driver?
Some say he has no face, and that he can write a book. All we know is Ben Collins was involved in the development of Project Cars 2.
That was such a fun weekend! It was a pleasure meeting you Jason!
The amount of sarcasm in this vid 😂
I Wanted to see the professional playing on Project Cars....
They did something similar on Top Gear. Jeremy Clarkson raced an NSX around Laguna Secca(sp?) in Gran Turismo and then in real life. Two main take a ways were:
A) The video game let the car behave unrealistically, it would accelerate, brake and handle simply better than the real world allows.

Yes, but it also was the first time he was behind the wheel of the simulator. This makes the game a bit more that "slightly" unrealistic IMO.
"we all learned absolutely nothing today" 😂😂😂
Always look forward to and enjoy your videos. The unexpected comedy of this one was definitely a bonus haha. Thanks for the laughs!
Jason, you are the funniest driving engineer youtuber I know, thoroughly entertaining. As a non expert track driver I think your technique is fine because it works for you lol :)
Love the commentary.
Way cooler than an office job...😀
We learned that Project Cars 2, like most racing games, is still not a very realistic simulator.
The commentary is absolutely, 100% GOLDEN.
I think you did a bang up job, man. don't worry about the haters.
Albert Metzger agreed.
If you're "Bad" at something why would you beat anyone..? 🤔
Cuz not being the worst of the worst is something :)
Maybe it's a Michael Jackson reference :o
cuz you all are idiots.
StrangeClouds bc it is easy in a game
Keti peri
Hey Jason. Just wanna thank you for that pro tip. I needed new brakes and now I can save money and just slow down by rear ending someone.
"We have all learned absolutely nothing today"
Best line, ever.
Your commentary is priceless! Love it mate!
Your driving technique is really bad, it's one hand on the wheel one hand on the stick, and if no stick then one hand out the window
BMW X. You said basically the exact same thing as someone else in the comments. Coincidence?
That's because everyone is pro you see, no honestly I didn't even read the comments
You just forgot one thing. That's not a BMW.
Yeah, BMW driving hand position is one hand on the wheel and the other out the window palm facing down and drawing waves. Didn't you all see the commercials?
Loving the rich irony 👍
This was a great video on real world driving vs driving in games! Cool to see. Great idea and job on the lap!
Now this is how you deal with sponsored content. Do what they ask, but make it different enough for your base content so it's clear what the purpose is. Love it.
Glad you enjoyed the video! It is not sponsored, however. :)
Your race game commentary is some of the funniest on RUclips.
NOW we're talking!!! I'm a sim racer at heart, spent too much money on that stuff. iracing and asseto corsa!!! Great Job on the real track, luv these videos!
That one thumb in, one thumb out technique really does the trick
"So we have all learned absolutely nothing today.." I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF
“We have all learned absolutely nothing today” Lmao EE, you’re doing great man 👍🏼
It simply means that Project cars2 is not realistic enough simulator or was not set on ultra realistic difficulty setting.
Project cars is a horrible choice if you wanted to test reality
@engineeringexplained Awesome video. Love you comedic voice over! Keep up videos like this one. Quite a few good laughs in there. Great job man keep it up!
The commentary was great, I'd love to hear more like these.
"We have learned nothing today" - i love your honesty.
"That's actually the real racing line, a lot of these guys don't know about it." A+ XD
"We all learned absolutely nothing today."
Brilliant!
Jason I love your commentary!
"We have all learnt nothing today" got me cracking. Enjoyed your video nonetheless. XD
this was the least scientific test I have ever watched on youtube
As soon as you gave the 'pro tip' I knew this video was gold
The professional driver had some extremely unfair advantages. He had no slow chase car and he has driver assists turned off, so of course he would get a better lap time!
Man these style videos are hilarious!!
Hahaha, "So, we have learned abolutely nothing today".
Eventhough, that was actually pretty great!
One of my favorite tracks! I’ve raced Chumpcar there and had the honor of blowing an engine lapping way more slowly than either of these guys.
pure sarcasm. pure awesome.
awesome commentary :'D
Too much sarcasm 😂
"Clearly a driving prodigy" hahaha loved the commentary
Good going, man. I'm glad for you.
Reminds me of the quote from the book No Hero. " slow is smooth and smooth is fast"
I loved the comment you made about the pro driver's thumb.
Perhaps he became a pro driver after being a pro hitch-hiker.
Aha! That's why you were around for IndyCar :) It was nice meeting you in the Paddock.
The moment when mustang and ECO are in one sentence xdd
M4D AL3X My 2015 mustang GT often gets 29 to 30 mpg on the highway, so it's surprisingly economic. 435 HP, way better sound, more badass just for being a v8. Spencer Leeper
Buying an ecoboost in a mustang is just ridicules
Doesn't Hummer have a plugin hybrid in the works? :P
IMO, the Ecoboost should replace the V6.
One of your best videos, laughed a lot! :-)
This was a surprisingly entertaining video!
Love this! Definitely woke me up this morning. Your commentary is the most entertaining part 😄
FYI, I was taught to drive with my thumbs in (like you are doing) on road course. Unfortunately, I took that technique to an autocross event and quickly broke my thumb. So there you are!
Personally, over/under works for me
Brad Nimbus over the years, I settled on a method of "whatever works" 😉
your commentary is freaking amazing hahahahahahah do this more often!
This video is so damn hilarious, you did a very good job on this, you have really earned the thumbs up for that! :D
"We've all learned absolutely nothing today." LOL
Hahahaha. I haven't watched one of your videos in a while this one gave me a huge laugh though. I love racing and sim racing! The ending was the best. And we all have learned absolutely nothing today.. :) Keep it up bud! Maybe next time they'll let you take the assists off.
Interesting. Always wondered how I'd do in these. I used to be both great and terrible at Gran Turismo. Good job out there!
Super cool video.
Def came out of left-field, but involved two of my favorite things: video games and cars!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A person playing a racing game won't make you faster than a professional racer. However, I think that it can help you close the gap (very slightly).
You've gotta love when you can end a video saying "we have all learned absolutely nothing today".
Should have put the instructor in the sim, great vid, keep it up chap, sarcasm was well executed
I seriously missed out. Got invited to this event 3 times and missed all 3 emails! Would have been great to meet you and the other RUclipsrs!
your commentary was perfect
The comentary was awesome!
The commentary had me dying when u said this is where u critique my driving lol
that sarcasm was great lol and very true
"Yeah we learned absolutely nothing" 😂
Loved the conclusion! :D
That pro tip tho!
A few tips for ya: point all the air vents towards your face for additional cooling, shave your arms for better aero, and put your wee to the right as much as possible to get optimum balance. There's 10 seconds right there. The rest of the difference will have to come from learning to drive better.
Based off how you did in the game, its already a miracle that you even allowed to drive that car let alone going all out in it.😂
LOLz! They made you use traction control?! You got screwed! :-P
The game's physics looks like an arcade rather than a driving sim.
That's awesome that you get to try out their simulator AND have a perspective in the car on track I'm jealous
I particularly liked how there was no summary to tell us what we didn't learn.
"of course we all learned nothing today" 😂😂😂
I find it incredible that ecoboost was able to stay in front of you in any way. In corners possibly, but in a straight line with you pushing it all the way it seems virtually impossible.
