    The first Canon I bought was the Powershot S95, in 2011, based on information from the Kenrockwell website. I was then able to choose a camera that brings me great photos until today. Since then, Canon has always taken steps forward, it seems that following Mr. Rockwell's advice, unlike competitors who take three steps forward and one back. I was surprised that the S95 shared with the R6 the top mode dial, rear dial and was manufactured in Japan. The best lesson I learned from Mr. Rockwell is that what matters is the photographer's eye. I want to thank Mr. Rockwell the guidelines that made me buy the S95 almost ten years ago and the great reviews that will surely guide me to buy my first mirrorless system. Thank you!

    Hey Ken
    You’ve got the right attitude where you look at these modern cameras with ergonomics and practical features to get your job done rather than getting sucked into unnecessary features used to sell to those who want the biggest numbers
    I have have to remind myself when buying new camera’s they will only be relevant for a few years, so unless your a professional or work in a war zone long term build quality is irrelevant

    Another amazing Ken Rockwell video; a bit long perhaps, but the amount of information and expertise is just extraordinary. If you want to know how the R6 works - indeed virtually any camera under the sun - and how well it does what it’s supposed to do, you can no better than watch a Ken Rockwell video. He is a one man institution and camera encyclopaedia, and, I believe, completely honest & trustworthy.

    Ken this was one of best common sense and honest review of the Canon R6 camera that matches the the other best review on RUclips from Gordon Laing. Both of you have reviewing what the camera is made for first and that is for Photographs and the video is just a bonus. If people want the best video camera then stop complaining and get the right tool for the job. I also agree that the other cameras that you have mentioned are not very good at the ergonomics and the menu systems are also poor in comparison . i suspect that the fanboys will have a moan at this review, but some will never agree with what is true, saying that you will get familiar with the different camera brands, It took me a long time to get used to my Fuji XT4. this Canon R6 is all the camera one real needs to fulfill most of all your need's ok the R5 is a more advanced camera with higher pixel count and is helpful if you crop a lot . At last Canon have put the cat amongst the pigeons when it comes to dynamic range. Hope that they will make a super high end pro camera soon. Thanks Ken for a great review

Need it for ice hockey shooting and am converting to mirrorless/full frame, and R glass and this looks to be the ideal camera. YES! Totally agree with you on the MPs! You’ll need a bigger drive to download and keep all those larger photos from the larger MP of the R5. My 70D is right around 20MP and I’ve never said, “I need more pixels!” Thanks again!

    Your reviews are truly outstanding. In 2013 I bought the Canon 5D Mk III with the 24-105 L based upon your review of it as the best DSLR, and everything you said about it was spot on. It was my favorite camera. I foolishly sold it in 2020 to get the Fuji XT-3 because it was a more travel friendly size and I was attracted to the analog dials and aperture rings on the lenses that I was used to growing up with my Nikon Photomic FTn and FE2. But I have become frustrated with its hit or miss AF. The 5DIII was way better in this respect. So now I’m about to click buy at B&H on the R6 with the 24-105 RF L lens, a more capable and smaller kit, I suppose, than the 5DIII, even though the latter had 2 more mp. I also only shoot stills, not video. My iPhone 13 Pro is more than I need for any video. I’m also planning on having prints made of my work, up to 20x30, for display. I know the R6 will give me far more keepers than the Fuji because of the much more advanced AF, but the 20mp, six less than the Fuji crop sensor, makes me wonder if I’m making the wisest choice and whether I should wait to see what Fuji’s forthcoming cameras may have to offer.

      Fascinating article. Once again, you’ve helped me decide. R6. I do like the mode dial better than the R5 setup, and I’ll have dual SD slots instead of a ridiculous CF Express and SD. It should serve me well for at least the next 10 years. I’ll send you a pic of my first gallery print made from it. Cheers!

    I guess guess that maybe the reason servo and one-shot AF have different colored focus guides is to remind the user that if the subject is out of focus in one-shot, they're going to need to move the camera, or move the subject, or wait for the subject to come into focus, whereas in servo it's a matter of whether or not the camera is tracking the right thing.
    I'm not sure if it's all that helpful. The difference I mean. Obviously a focus guide can be very useful.

      R6! Nikon is very far behind. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6.htm the Z6 II is what Nikon should have had two years ago, while the R6 is the new state of the art.

    • @christopherheer4834
      @christopherheer4834 3 года назад

      Honestly, it's just wrong, saying Nikon is far behind😅 take both cameras into your hands and decide which one feels better. Also, consider the whole system setup. Personally, I prefer the Nikon Z 6 II. I really like Canon and their ergonomics, but the Nikon Z 6 II has fantastic ergonomics too, is a bit smaller and the Z lenses tend to be smaller and lighter as well, yet deliver expectional image quality. If you don't only need chunky super heavy f 1.2 lenses, than go for Nikon (the 1.8 lenses are super light and deliver one of the b3st image quality so far).

    • @frankluo230
      @frankluo230 3 года назад +1

      @@christopherheer4834 not to argue but Nikon is seriously overpriced. Lens and body made in Thailand should cost a fair bit less than things made in Japan. It doesn't matter how much tech specs are equal. Nikon pay Thai workers 10% of the wages they pay Japanese workers. Take 24-70f4 35f1.8 and 85f1.8 for example, Canon version not only costs less, optically excellent, also has OIS. Nikon version has great optical quality but a lot less complex in construction, more plastic, feels cheaper esp the 24-70f4. Nikon cut too many corners in manufacturing but demand the highest price of the three.

    Hi Ken, greetings from Jakarta. Very good and informative video, as always. You have my subs, haha.
    Wanna hear your thoughts on whether it is worth upgrading to R6, R or R8, as I shoot with RP for 2 years now.
    R6 ii is out of budget and I like the ergonomics of R or R6. RP body and R8 is a bit too small, eventough I have adapter.
    I shoot mainly portrait, macro, and street, rarely shoot sports. Many situations requires High ISO so which camera can better suit this?
    I already have 4 EF lenses L series and 1 RF lens, so I don't mind using adapter.
    Pls share your thoughts. Thanks!

      The only reason for larger resolution sensors are as Ken said more detail if you find you shoot a lot at higher iso especially 6400+, more data to crop and more data for absurdly large prints. 8mp was already maxing out the printing resolution of any home printer at 8x10. Drum scans I used to get of my slides in the early 2000’s would produce a file around the same resolution and size of my canon 20D which was 8mp

    You don't use your R6 for video, but I do and its 4K/30 (OK, 4K/29.97) is buttery. I don't care if it's IPB; I'm shooting for RUclips. It's also my second body for stills behind my 5D Mark IV. PS I've also shopped at B&H since the '70s but I was in college.

    Apparently the R6 cannot shoot 12fps unless its with RF glass and "most" EF glass, theres a page in the manual claiming this. I wonder if it can shoot 12fps with sigma-tamron glass etc? i have sigma 150-600c and really curious if it can achieve this..

      I never use junk brands, so I can’t say. You’re always on tour own with them. Good luck and thanks!

      @@KenRockwellTV didn’t realize you consider Sigma glass a “junk brand” you haven’t tried a sigma or other brand lens on the R6 or R5?

      Thankfully no. As I said, I do this for a living full time so no time to throw money away at Tamron or Sigma. Thanks!

      @@KenRockwellTV interesting points Ken, thanks again. Funny tho because a handful of sigma glass has been proven sharper than canon, notably the 50mm 1.2 L by Sigmas 50m being sharper.

    • @KenRockwellTV

      Have you tried yourself? The RF Canon 50/1.2 is essentially flawless; thus I suspect you may have read an unqualified review someplace. While the junk brands can have great optics, what’s important is long term life. Junk brands are mostly unrepairable after 7 years and may not be compatible with whatever camera you buy 5 or 10 years in the future. Long term the good lenses are a better deal, and sell for much more used. Short term junk brands may look good, but long term, no. Also the money saving is mostly in mechanical shortcuts, not optics. Thanks!

    I got the Canon R6, i tried it and it's terrible,
    Here is what i found if you do video with it..
    #1 Using An External Recorder (NINJA V) is terrible, first off you can't really use Clog or CLOG 3 very well, also you get more noise if you use the Ninja V with this..>
    #2 The Color System is terrible, in the shadows and on the shadows of the skin tones it cast a horrible greenish yellow color.
    #3 Unless your subject is fully exposed or over exposed the Auto focus tracing is horrible..
    #4 Internal video recording is horrible because the codec that Canon uses makes you lag in editing, it's so slow, there is no way to record ALL I.
    #5 shooting 4k 60p Will Cause you to overheat pretty quickly.
    #6 Once you start to overhead the camera is unusable unless to shut it off for about 20 to 30 minutes..
    #7 If you shoot in any CLOG at all you get tons of noise.
    I could go on with all the negative stuff about it it's just not worth it at all, I switched back to the Fuji XT-4 which records much sharper
    the Auto Focus stays on focus even in low light.
    the color system is beautiful nice and clean no ugly colors in shadows and skin tones.
    i can record 4k 60P for 2 hours strait and not even a sign of overheating.
    all around even though the Fuji XT-3 is a APSC sensor the quality of video is much sharper and cleaner i have never had any noise presenting because i'm shooting in LOG.
    Don't waste your time with the R6 it's a bad camera..

      Ah, all depends what you do with it. I use it as a still camera; never considered trying to use it for video, as I say, my iPhone works better than these larger cameras do, for me anyway. Thanks!

      Try ISO 50 if you have good light. Just try it and ISO 100 and compare yourself in different conditions. That's what I do. Thanks!

    I know this a photo review (excellent). My problem is how the R6 switches from video to photo. I wish it had the photo/video switch that Nikon has which saves your last settings.

      @KenRockwellTV  3 года назад

      Which older 50mm? Every Canon EF lens works great on an EF to RF adapter. The EF 50/1.4 is a very outdated design from about 1991, and all the others are sullen with full reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/index.htm#50 Thanks!
