I like how chris n jordan record on different cameras and still have the same feel color wise. That means if i want to have a similar feel to chris and jordan, its not the camera, i just need to move to Canada.
@@MrPhilbautista It's +30c in Canada currently (probably closer to +40c in the Toronto area with humidity). There is no "overheating issue". Canon puts in limitations (reasonable ones for 8k Raw) to PREVENT overheating and shutdown (such as with the Sonys). There is a guy named SamGuw who shoots in warm temps and he stated that the R5 does not really get hot, and "doesn't overheat" but Canon has put in a "warning signal" as a safety precaution to prevent overheating. He said "the camera didn't get hot, it got warm, so I don't think it actually overheats". But again, the R5 is a 45 MP photo camera, not an 8K large cinema camera for making movies etc. The fact that it can shoot 8K Raw for 20 mins is pretty amazing, something no other camera comes close to. But nobody is going to be using 8K on a regular basis and those who do, will be shooting on much more expensive video cams and probably on much bigger budget projects. Canon has simply taken out the guess-work that plagued overheating with the Sonys, and has implemented proper indicators so we know exactly what we are getting even BEFORE we hit the record button. Impressive!

R6 doesn't record video to both SD card slots at the same time, photo proxies to second sd card only, right? Did you even mention this total deal breaker in your video review? Did you mention that the 30min record limit makes no sense since EU 30min tax ended 19 months ago?

Fantastic, a production R6 in your hands already. Me thinks you have the R5 already too? (I know the video was shot w/ PRE-production model). Very exciting. I loved the quality of stills, and LOVED the IBIS of the 5 w/ the handheld video shots. I already pre-ordered the R5 because I'm coming from the R, and being a photo/artist w/ need to print large and freedom to crop (also large at many times), I'm looking forward to 45Mpx. So looking forward to the R5 review. And NO I ain't scared of the heat issues, there's been enough about that, anymore than swimming too far and drowning in the ocean, duh! A body can only take so much, glad I can still swim/shoot. LOL

This is probably the most ringing endorsement I've seen for the EOS R 5D. Much more compelling than that overwrought stuff by the Canon ambassadors. The colors are just gorgeous. Was this graded or straight out of the camera?
It's mostly straight out of camera. They always genuinely test cameras to their raw capability, little to no post processing which is why their assessment can always be relied, at least for me. Cheers :D

@Jordan Drake Quick question: when using C-log, which color matrix did you select, EOS original or Neutral? I’ve personally started with EOS Original but found out that the reds were a little too orange to my taste - good for skin tones but not so much for the rest. Neutral looks more true to life, but more magenta in the the skin tones. Which one would you recommend?
@@kardemummabullar This was shot in EOS original. I find it requires a bit less tweaking in post than neutral, and I needed quick turnaround for this episode.

It's raw and clog... So mostly the result of Chris and Jordan's work. You can see how consistent the colors are on each of their videos, whatever brand they use.
Ivan Phan That helps a noob like me. I forgot that’s the case with RAW. However, beautiful colors though! This coming from a Fujifilm JPEG fanboy! For me it’s all about the colors and after that stabilization and dynamic range! Greetings from an APS-C price point world!

@Ziggi Mon Would you give a link with any review of a camera that to you does have really nice colors? Just to see and maybe learn. Cheers! In for example Sony skin tones are often too red, with this Canon it seems more real, a bit more flat/less saturated, but more real to me, for example. The greenery looks OK, not as good as Fujifilm but not as nuclear ultra saturated as say what Samsung does in their smartphones or Huawei some years ago... that's not real anymore that kind of green. So please an example of excellence please preferably in some RUclips review.

EXCELLENT VIDEO.. the technical quality of the video is startling! It is better than any other video I have seen all year..it has clarity and no odd contrast emphasis..perfection.. knowing the lighting conditions in the area I can say the camera has great dynamic range not burning out in the super light of southern Alberta. Nanton has a great historic aircraft collection so I hope you went there!
Are you serious? The video looked God awful. It's unbelievable that this is supposed to be 8k oversampled to 4k, let alone filmed in 8k. Here's 8k oversampled to 4k. THAT is sharp. But I seriously disagree with with your opinion of the Bulgaria 8k link you shared above. It looks like smartphone footage - full of post sharpening artefacts and aliasing, massive loss of detail through over exposure (or terrible grading). I'm not sure what camera was used but the way it's graded makes it look like it has about 4 stops of dynamic range with zero highlight roll off. The colours look like it was coloured in with flourescent highlighter marker pens! The shot at 3.46 of the knight in chainmail with axe and shield is hilariously bad - half his face, beard, shield and coat has clipped to white 😂I'm guessing you're on a wind up sharing this footage because it really is a showcase on how to get things badly wrong.
@@eifionjones8513 totally. He's impressed by its perceived sharpness. What about tones? It's unnatural for the entire scene to appear super sharp. That's not how our visual experience works. We see a narrow field of view which is why we respond to shallow depth of field images that focus our gaze.
Even though I've had my own channel for 9 months now, I still find myself doing back to DP Review. You give us extra value that can't be found elsewhere. Thanks for the R5 review. I know this is a review of the R6, but turn off the audio and pay attention to IBIS, dynamic range, AF, detail, colour accuracy and we get to see the R5 in the field... an R5 that is early preproduction model. Great job guys. I'll be giving you a shout out in my next video.
Woah.. the dynamic range at 2:54 is impressive. I can see some of the details in the darkest shadow of the tank, while the sky and highlights are completely detailed still...
Not in love with either camera... But I will say, this is one of the most well-produced and aesthetically pleasing DPReview (or really, any camera channel review) episodes I've ever seen! Keep up the excellent work!
Just when I’d decided to be happy and stick with my GH5, I see Jordan’s video work and now I am figuring out which internal organs I can sell to get the R5 or R6 and the lenses it will need.
Really great images! Excellent Camera. But I see no reason, for my type of Video work, to change my GH5 and even more to change the system. I am waiting for the arrival of the GH6 and only then will I do a good evaluation if it would be worth changing the system. But either way I think the R6 is a great option for a lot of people. At the moment, if I were to migrate completely to FF I would stay with the Z6 as it seems to me the best cost benefit.
I bought the Canon EOS R because I wanted RF glass. I now own the Canon EF 15 and 35, 24 to 70, 70 to 200,all f2.8s... EF 100 macro F 2.8, 35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm primes all EF and the sigma 150 to 600 with the ef-mount. The sad thing is I spent all this money and still don't have an RF lens. They're just so damn expensive and you pretty much have to buy all of them knew. I bought all my EF glass used with the newest version weather version 2 or 3 at really really good prices from eBay or Facebook Marketplace and places like that. I can't say that the EF glass does work phenomenal on the EOS R.. but I'm sure everybody already knows that. I think the first two lenses I'll end up getting for the RF will be the 28 to 70 and the 70 to 200.
I think it matters in terms of the intensity in which you perform post production on c-log. ALL-I is a lot better for movement and heavy work. However, for basic video the IPB should do just fine. For professional video work - I would prefer all-I. Fuji XT-4 has ALL-I and EOS R had the ALL-I. So, honestly this should have been ALL-I. Hopefully if enough people complain we may get a filmware update; if feasible.
Compare it directly to the 1DX Mark III and you'll have a pretty good idea. According to DxO, the 1DX3 tested at 14.5EV versus 14.7EV on the Sony A73 and 14.3 on the Nikon. So it's basically a negligible difference.
Chris, Jordan, thank you for your review. I really would like an R6. I don't need the extra megapixels of the R5, and my computer doesn't have the disc space or the computing power to handle all the massive data of the R5.

Wow! The DR, organic sharpness & color of the R5 is amazing! For this alone, some people will buy it. Canon did such a great job that even DPR have nothing bad to say even if they tried soooo hard with the R6. The future looks great for both us and Canon.

What exactly was shot on the R5 and what exactly on the R6 ? Are the stills shown from the R6 and all the video from R5 or is there some video from the R6 as well ? And also, what settings did you use for the video ?

Your stuff always looks great. But the quality of the video-the IQ-seemed to be more clear and crisp. Did you all think the same? It just looked different. Noticeably. Even with YT compression.
A very pleasing review of an overall very good camera but here is a conterpoint to the countless positive comments . First, the price is higher than competing models. Second, is the infamous blackout/delay from the R solved ? Third, how about shutter shock ? Fourth, still no way to compensate focus shift from the 35mm f1.8 like a 'constant preview'... Any specs means little without reliable focus and stabilisation. A lot has been done in the right direction : DR, AF, joystick, 2 cards and still the unique dust curtain from the R ... but the burst mode at 8 i/s without blackout is just ok for a 20mp.
20MP is high, idk why people consider it low now. Hell, I've used 12MP for years and have never had any issues. The race for highest MP is just getting ridiculous. Unless you print out your photos to a large format, there's little need for crazy high MP. Focus on composition. It's funny even hearing friends complain about 12MP, or 20MP when literally all they do is post on Instagram.....at 1.5MP.....
Yeah. Those people are pixel whores. I don't know if anyone else has used that term, but I like it! What? Are they shooting to print images for the side of buses?!! 20MP is way more than you need for a typical photo.
@@AmirulSyafi ^ this!! - quite frankly, if you've never had it then you won't miss a high resolution sensor. I've got a Canon 5DS just now and there's no way I could see me dropping to 20 MP from 50MP.. the flexibility it affords you to redo composition with very tight crops (and no loss to IQ) in post processing is priceless.
Thanks for the info. Just got the camera. Absolutely amazing. Just don't understand why it ships with the EFCS engaged instead of the full mechanical shutter. Easy fix but some people don't understand the cons of the EFCS.
Realizing this is a review of the R6, but I found myself focusing on the video imag. , I'm impressed with the video coming from the R5 here, on a lot of levels. AF, detail color all look really good....except...there are a few shots with some really wiggy color...over-amped blues in shadier situations. Curious the cause of this...are we looking at strait out of the camera Rec.709 or have you shot RAW (or Log) and graded the footage...is there something going on with the blues in general or were you just pumping the saturation. A number of the shots also seem to have a magenta/blue bias, and I'd love to know what's causing that. Great review of the R6...looks like a nice camera for a certain market segment.

I was way more interested in the R6 than the R5 but I couldn’t even pay much attention to contents of this review because of how amazing the video quality from this R5 is. Really stunning.
When discussing price, I find it interesting that most reviews mention, almost in passing, that the R6 has a burst rate that rivals the 1D-X iii, but a better AF system, and that's a $6500 DSLR. In mirrorless terms, for action the R6 seems to hold its own against Sony's A9/A9ii, both of which are much more expensive. It might not quite have the readout speed, but it's still impressive for a $2500 camera.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Every RF lense needs a firmware update for the IS to get it working together with the IBIS. The RF 24-105 F4 IS L that was used in this review hasn´t received such an update as I am wiriting this comment. So right now we can´t really see how good the IBIS system really works and should see an improvement here in the furture. Please keep that in mind.
Great vid, guys, and not for anything, but why is it that when a new camera (s) come out, the previous ones, such as the EOS R or RP suddenly are no longer in the conversation. I have both and am very happy with them. Ok, so I guess for video the new R5/6 are better, but I would bet dollars to donuts that the image quality of the two newer cameras is not much, if any better than on the R/RP. Glad you you used that fantastic 24-105L. Great lens!
I cant believe that the R6 cant record video in aperture priorty mode. This is crazy! Please can you confirm this? Cant you just turn the top dial to AV and press the red video button on the top panel? Please let me know. It would be crazy to only have manual or fully auto video modes and such a high end camera
The problem with Aperture priority is the depth of field varies with the light level, so e.g. a cloud passes over the Sun and the camera will keep the video brightness the same, but some sharp stuff in the image gets blurry. Better to set shutter speed and aperture and use Auto ISO, which it does support.
Never has a better camera come around at a worse time-at least for me, an events photog. I hope a lot of wealthy people buy these for their covid downtime so struggling working pros can get them cheaper whenever our work picks up again.
Exactly. Last body I bought has sat on my shelf for months. I sold it and ordered the R6. Hoping it doesn't sit on the shelf too. Actually, I refuse to let it sit. I'll shoot images of leaves and pebbles if I have to.

As someone who shoots photos only. Would it pay a person to go with a 5D Mark 4 over the R6 when the R5 is way out of budget for a side job photographer?

Most of the video is graded C-Log. Nothing fancy with the grade, just curves, white balance and saturation.

It's raw and clog... So mostly the result of Chris and Jordan's work. You can see how consistent the colors are on each of their videos, whatever brand they use.
Ivan Phan That helps a noob like me. I forgot that’s the case with RAW. However, beautiful colors though! This coming from a Fujifilm JPEG fanboy! For me it’s all about the colors and after that stabilization and dynamic range! Greetings from an APS-C price point world!

@Ziggi Mon Would you give a link with any review of a camera that to you does have really nice colors? Just to see and maybe learn. Cheers! In for example Sony skin tones are often too red, with this Canon it seems more real, a bit more flat/less saturated, but more real to me, for example. The greenery looks OK, not as good as Fujifilm but not as nuclear ultra saturated as say what Samsung does in their smartphones or Huawei some years ago... that's not real anymore that kind of green. So please an example of excellence please preferably in some RUclips review.

Curious what mode this episode was shot in? IPB? All-I? Oversampled? Looks fantastic! The dynamic range in some of these shots is insane.

i make music video, mostly outside. I like blurry background and i am mostly 2-4 m (like portrait) away from the camera. Witch RF lens would you recommend for this?
Ooh my god! I’m watching this video on my new IPAD pro 2020 and the Dynamic range on the R5 is amazing. I can see highlights , skies are not blown out ,IBIS looks beautiful.. I love what I am seeing. R5 is looking extremely promising!! Can’t wait to get mine! God job guys!

EXCELLENT VIDEO.. the technical quality of the video is startling! It is better than any other video I have seen all year..it has clarity and no odd contrast emphasis..perfection.. knowing the lighting conditions in the area I can say the camera has great dynamic range not burning out in the super light of southern Alberta. Nanton has a great historic aircraft collection so I hope you went there!

Are you serious? The video looked God awful. It's unbelievable that this is supposed to be 8k oversampled to 4k, let alone filmed in 8k. Here's 8k oversampled to 4k. THAT is sharp. The R5 footage here looks like every other previous Canon mushy garbage.

@@FirstnameLastname-pe3ky I don't think the R5/R6 footage looks anything special - certainly not a patch on what can be pulled from a cinema camera. But I seriously disagree with with your opinion of the Bulgaria 8k link you shared above. It looks like smartphone footage - full of post sharpening artefacts and aliasing, massive loss of detail through over exposure (or terrible grading). I'm not sure what camera was used but the way it's graded makes it look like it has about 4 stops of dynamic range with zero highlight roll off. The colours look like it was coloured in with flourescent highlighter marker pens! The shot at 3.46 of the knight in chainmail with axe and shield is hilariously bad - half his face, beard, shield and coat has clipped to white 😂I'm guessing you're on a wind up sharing this footage because it really is a showcase on how to get things badly wrong.
@@eifionjones8513 totally. He's impressed by its perceived sharpness. What about tones? It's unnatural for the entire scene to appear super sharp. That's not how our visual experience works. We see a narrow field of view which is why we respond to shallow depth of field images that focus our gaze.

Even though I've had my own channel for 9 months now, I still find myself doing back to DP Review. You give us extra value that can't be found elsewhere. Thanks for the R5 review. I know this is a review of the R6, but turn off the audio and pay attention to IBIS, dynamic range, AF, detail, colour accuracy and we get to see the R5 in the field... an R5 that is early preproduction model. Great job guys. I'll be giving you a shout out in my next video.
Woah.. the dynamic range at 2:54 is impressive. I can see some of the details in the darkest shadow of the tank, while the sky and highlights are completely detailed still...

Pre ordered my R6 yesterday and this video makes me happy.
Just when I’d decided to be happy and stick with my GH5, I see Jordan’s video work and now I am figuring out which internal organs I can sell to get the R5 or R6 and the lenses it will need.
I love my gh5 and i dont see anything here that makes me wanna switch

Really great images! Excellent Camera. But I see no reason, for my type of Video work, to change my GH5 and even more to change the system. I am waiting for the arrival of the GH6 and only then will I do a good evaluation if it would be worth changing the system. But either way I think the R6 is a great option for a lot of people. At the moment, if I were to migrate completely to FF I would stay with the Z6 as it seems to me the best cost benefit.
I bought the Canon EOS R because I wanted RF glass. I now own the Canon EF 15 and 35, 24 to 70, 70 to 200,all f2.8s... EF 100 macro F 2.8, 35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm primes all EF and the sigma 150 to 600 with the ef-mount. The sad thing is I spent all this money and still don't have an RF lens. They're just so damn expensive and you pretty much have to buy all of them knew. I bought all my EF glass used with the newest version weather version 2 or 3 at really really good prices from eBay or Facebook Marketplace and places like that. I can't say that the EF glass does work phenomenal on the EOS R.. but I'm sure everybody already knows that. I think the first two lenses I'll end up getting for the RF will be the 28 to 70 and the 70 to 200.

What about ALL-I versus IPB? That for me is one of the remaining questions between the R6 and R5.
I think it matters in terms of the intensity in which you perform post production on c-log. ALL-I is a lot better for movement and heavy work. However, for basic video the IPB should do just fine. For professional video work - I would prefer all-I. Fuji XT-4 has ALL-I and EOS R had the ALL-I. So, honestly this should have been ALL-I. Hopefully if enough people complain we may get a filmware update; if feasible.
Canon already confirm that they will bring ALL-I in the upcoming software update. You can verify on their website if you want..
I'm interested to see how its dynamic range stacks up against the Fuji X-T4's and the Sony A7R III's.

On my Eos r the skies would be blown out. So they must have improved the DR by I'm guessing a stop or more.
Compare it directly to the 1DX Mark III and you'll have a pretty good idea. According to DxO, the 1DX3 tested at 14.5EV versus 14.7EV on the Sony A73 and 14.3 on the Nikon. So it's basically a negligible difference.

Chris, Jordan, thank you for your review. I really would like an R6. I don't need the extra megapixels of the R5, and my computer doesn't have the disc space or the computing power to handle all the massive data of the R5.

Wow! The DR, organic sharpness & color of the R5 is amazing! For this alone, some people will buy it.
Canon did such a great job that even DPR have nothing bad to say even if they tried soooo hard with the R6. The future looks great for both us and Canon.

A very pleasing review of an overall very good camera but here is a conterpoint to the countless positive comments .
First, the price is higher than competing models. Second, is the infamous blackout/delay from the R solved ? Third, how about shutter shock ? Fourth, still no way to compensate focus shift from the 35mm f1.8 like a 'constant preview'... Any specs means little without reliable focus and stabilisation.
A lot has been done in the right direction : DR, AF, joystick, 2 cards and still the unique dust curtain from the R ... but the burst mode at 8 i/s without blackout is just ok for a 20mp.
The most understated "This camera is f'ing amazing" I have ever viewed.
4:05 : "most importantly there is very little rolling shutter"
12:10 : 19ms readout = "eliminating rolling shutter"
So it doesn't have 120 fps in 1080p? I honestly would use that often enough.
According to Canon Europe's R6 official specifications page, it does have it.
20MP is high, idk why people consider it low now. Hell, I've used 12MP for years and have never had any issues. The race for highest MP is just getting ridiculous. Unless you print out your photos to a large format, there's little need for crazy high MP. Focus on composition. It's funny even hearing friends complain about 12MP, or 20MP when literally all they do is post on Instagram.....at 1.5MP.....

@@AmirulSyafi ^ this!! - quite frankly, if you've never had it then you won't miss a high resolution sensor. I've got a Canon 5DS just now and there's no way I could see me dropping to 20 MP from 50MP.. the flexibility it affords you to redo composition with very tight crops (and no loss to IQ) in post processing is priceless.

Thanks for the info. Just got the camera. Absolutely amazing. Just don't understand why it ships with the EFCS engaged instead of the full mechanical shutter. Easy fix but some people don't understand the cons of the EFCS.

Realizing this is a review of the R6, but I found myself focusing on the video imag. , I'm impressed with the video coming from the R5 here, on a lot of levels. AF, detail color all look really good....except...there are a few shots with some really wiggy color...over-amped blues in shadier situations. Curious the cause of this...are we looking at strait out of the camera Rec.709 or have you shot RAW (or Log) and graded the footage...is there something going on with the blues in general or were you just pumping the saturation. A number of the shots also seem to have a magenta/blue bias, and I'd love to know what's causing that. Great review of the R6...looks like a nice camera for a certain market segment.

The quality of this video was spectacular and that newly improved dynamic range was very evident. Did Jordan do much in post regarding colour, as the colour looks fantastic? Great video, guys, as always.

R6 is something like 5D Mark IV (except top LCD, but better camera than 5D Mark IV)

This was shot on the 24-105mm F4 and 50mm F1.2. Wish I had a 15-35mm F2.8 for some of thew bridge shots...

@@thatjordandrake was there a firmware update for the lens? I have read a few places new firmware will be coming to make the IBIS better.
When discussing price, I find it interesting that most reviews mention, almost in passing, that the R6 has a burst rate that rivals the 1D-X iii, but a better AF system, and that's a $6500 DSLR. In mirrorless terms, for action the R6 seems to hold its own against Sony's A9/A9ii, both of which are much more expensive. It might not quite have the readout speed, but it's still impressive for a $2500 camera.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Every RF lense needs a firmware update for the IS to get it working together with the IBIS. The RF 24-105 F4 IS L that was used in this review hasn´t received such an update as I am wiriting this comment. So right now we can´t really see how good the IBIS system really works and should see an improvement here in the furture. Please keep that in mind.
Great vid, guys, and not for anything, but why is it that when a new camera (s) come out, the previous ones, such as the EOS R or RP suddenly are no longer in the conversation. I have both and am very happy with them. Ok, so I guess for video the new R5/6 are better, but I would bet dollars to donuts that the image quality of the two newer cameras is not much, if any better than on the R/RP. Glad you you used that fantastic 24-105L. Great lens!

I cant believe that the R6 cant record video in aperture priorty mode. This is crazy! Please can you confirm this? Cant you just turn the top dial to AV and press the red video button on the top panel? Please let me know. It would be crazy to only have manual or fully auto video modes and such a high end camera
The problem with Aperture priority is the depth of field varies with the light level, so e.g. a cloud passes over the Sun and the camera will keep the video brightness the same, but some sharp stuff in the image gets blurry. Better to set shutter speed and aperture and use Auto ISO, which it does support.
What's wrong with full manual mode? It's not like you have 10 settings
who shoots av in video? shoot with an iphone better.

Exactly. Last body I bought has sat on my shelf for months. I sold it and ordered the R6. Hoping it doesn't sit on the shelf too. Actually, I refuse to let it sit. I'll shoot images of leaves and pebbles if I have to.
I sure didnt plan on buying much equiptment due to weddings canceling left arnd right, but my 5d mkIII just died lol so ill probably be getting one.
