Hi Jimmy. Here's my personal 'take'. 1) Pickups are far better in the Squier. More note to note clarity. Exactly the reason to by a Jazzmaster with alnico jazzmaster construction. 2) Tuners are well made in the Squier for the long haul. Also easier to load strings and they eliminate the ugly and finger piercing string ends. 3) The rhythm circuit is terrific for many blues, jazz and some r&r leads and of course rhythms. Theres a different resistor in the circuit and being able to switch systems during a song (with different volume and tone) is precious. 4) I prefer Indian Laurel fret boards. You got me thinking about buying the Squier Jazzmaster. How was it, re: neck,-action-string buzz? I told you about the problem I had with a Monoprice DLX Plus "Telecaster" so I am hesitant about getting another Monoprice guitar of any kind. I have their 15 and 5 watt tube amps, and I really like them. But the guitars .... Have you checked the frets on your Monoprice guitars? That would make a great video for you to do. Surround yourself with all the guitars and with each one, slide the strings apart and see if you can slide the corner of a piece of regular copy paper between the fret and the fretboard. And do that all up and down the fretboard. On the Mono DLX Plus Tele that I got you could slide the piece of paper on almost every fret. Also the action was still too high even after lowering the saddles as far as it would go; would have had to shim the neck. The string slots in the nut were all too wide and deep. The guitar looked great though. I would have kept it and shimmed the neck and replaced the nut, but the problem with the lifted frets is beyond my knowledge level, except I know it's a big PITA tapping the frets in with a hammer then leveling and dressing. . What did you have to do to make that OS40 playable? You make it sound good. How low did you get the action without string buzz?
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I honestly have not noticed nor felt any high fret issues with any of my Monoprice guitars. I had to do very little to my OS40 as I recall…it came in setup quite well. It did have a couple of small finish cracks by the neck pocket, but I felt it was not a reason to return it as it played great right out of the box. This was NOT the case with the Squier CV JM. That guitar needed a lot of setup work including a neck shim to get it to where I wanted it. Both guitars are now around 1.50 @ 12th on low E and 1.25 @ 12th on the high E which is preferable to me. They could probably go lower, but that’s my preference. I did full reviews of these guitars here on the channel, along with the setup video on the Classic Vibe should you wish to get more details! Thanks again for stopping in to the channel! 🎸👍
Are you familiar with Tagima guitars? They have a TW-61, ver similar to the Monoprice , offset, P-90’s BUT with a “baritone” switch which is a 6 way switch, similar to the B.B. King Lucille switch. Good price about $300 . Just thought I’d throw that one in. Love the open discussion on your channel.
I have heard of them, but have never played any Tagima guitars. That sounds very interesting…will have to do some research on it! Thanks so much for the “heads-up” mjvicc1952 👍 I always appreciate the discussion, and glad you enjoy it as well! 🎸
Awesome JS《☆》Nice comparo Brother👍✔The Squire pickups definitely have the Vibe🎸How's the gloss neck finish on the Squire ? I have a 2021 Squire Tele Deluxe Classic Vibe. The neck finish is so sticky. I actually prefer gloss necks but it's so bad. I wiped it down with 90% alcohol but it didn't help much. I may scuff the gloss off with sandpaper🖖🤓🏈
Thanks for watching and commenting BDOG JR….the finish on the neck is fine. I don’t sweat much, so it’s a non issue. You could hit it with a light sand paper or “greenie” pad to take the gloss down a bit. Appreciate your stopping in to the channel! Enjoy that CV Tele! 👍🎸
I see that the Guitar Faeries again picked appropriate companion guitars for you, like that Slick SL56, although that one is probably closer to the Squier Paranormal Offset Telecaster than to a traditional Jazzmaster. I still think that’s one of the coolest of the more original/unconventional Fender clones out there, and a very surprising one, cause I am generally not a fan of distressed or relic guitars, but this one is done in such a way that it looks more unique than worn, and it REALLY sounds good in your review of that one!
@@JimmyStewart1 No problem! Incidentally, I also just got the IYV IPF-300, the semi-hollow PRS Custom 24-style clone with the vine inlay on the fretboard. This guitar is SUPER lightweight, at only 5 pounds, 4 ounces. With some F-hole cleanup, minor truss rod adjustment, fretboard oiling, intonation, and stock string replacement, this guitar is SHOCKINGLY good for the price! It’s gone from being one of the worst to one of my best playing guitars-I don’t understand how it can be so lightweight! If you don’t mind, maybe I’ll take a crack at reviewing it myself.
@@zuperdee Wow…I heard it was lighter than expected but 5lbs 4 ounces? That is LIGHT!! The IYV ITAP that I have is the lightest guitar I have, and I don’t think it is that light! Go for the review my friend!! Let’s have a look! 👍🎸
Nice video Jimmy! I always love your thorough comparisons. I'm curious to see what you'd think of the Xavier JT-100 from GuitarFetish. You've already got the Slick offset, which is kind of a beast of its own, but the JT-100 seems to be kind of a mix of the Monoprice and Squier. Circuitry seems similar to the Monoprice (no rhythm circuit), but it uses GFS JM90 pickups, which is their take on Jazzmaster pickups. Price is about $250, so while it's a bit more than the Monoprice, it's still close to half the Squier. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks for watching and commenting Sean! Have not had a chance to check out or play the Xavier…perhaps a look in the future? 😎 Appreciate the heads up and suggestion. Thanks again for stopping in and the support! 👍🎸
Sweet playing as always Jimmy , enjoy your new guitar. I think i'll have to go with the CV though as far as having a fuller sound , the Mono sounds a little tinny to my ears. But hey to each his own , nice demo anyway.✌
Thanks so much for watching and commenting Mike! Both guitars are certainly capable, but I would certainly agree the tones available via the CV are superb for those “Jazzmaster” vibe sounds. Really appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts! Thanks so much for the support! 👍🎸
I like the natural wood look. also like white. If I could only choose 1, I'd go with Monoprice. There isn't enough difference between them to spend the extra $$$ in my opinion and preferences. I'm thinking about a diff Squire at the moment and I also never thought I'd buy one but I am thinking about so it's possible I guess. I just got the white cali classic and I had to replace the tuners. I got a black one prior and the tuners are better on it and remain. Just never know what you will receive.
I hear ya Mike…what Squier are you looking at? I picked up 4 in the past year, even when I swore I wouldn’t buy one! 😎. In my opinion, the CV, Paranormal and Contemporary Series are pretty great! I have been happy with all my Monoprice purchases, but yes, your right in that you may receive any online guitar with a issue, cosmetic flaw(s) or like in your case, tuners. Truly appreciate your stopping in and sharing Mike…thanks so much! 👍🎸

Thanks so much for stopping in bro….the OS30 would be a good starter for your “offset” collection! 😎 The P90’s in the OS40 are actually quite nice, but when you compare them to Jazzmaster pups, you get to hear the difference in this style guitar, which of course was the main reason for shooting this video…well, that and to have some “Jazzmaster” fun with them both! 🤣 Thanks so much for stopping in…greatly appreciated! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 sweet tones from both anyway! i think the slick slp509 p90 kit sounds better than the slp510 p90 kit....the 509kit will be going in the os30 when i get her...still around 250 for everything including guitar... ive been experimenting with "rockibilly" stuff lately.... found some intresting stuff too!

@@JimmyStewart1 odd thing is i cant find any reviews on the os30 model...thats strange to me... i like the "strat" style bridge on the os30...might even install a "bigblock" in it for "mo powaa baybeh!"
great vid bro! im not sure im understanding the "rhythm circuit" tho...i always thought the neck pup was considered the "rhythm" side...maybe im missing something? looked like 2 tone controls and mini selector switches too...im lost..."show me the way" as peter frampton would say lol!
Thanks for watching Mike….so…with the CV, you have the original “rhythm circuit” developed for the Jazzmaster. The idea is that you can switch to that circuit independent of the main 3way and have a separate/independent tone set up that you can simply switch to by hitting the switch on the upper bout. When the switch is down (towards the guitar body) the pickups are controlled like normal with the 3 way selection of neck, both, bridge and the master volume/tone control. Flipping the switch up (towards the player) the circuit switches to the “rhythm circuit”…the 3 way no longer works, the master vol/tone no longer works. The rhythm circuit controls the neck pup only, and tone/volume is now controlled by the thumb wheels on the upper bout. The circuit also incorporates a type of “treble bleed” as well, to mellow out the neck pup…they also use 1M caps.
hey jimmy i had to stop in and watch this one again haha!! update on my os30: ive decided to leave the stock pups in it...however id like to put a "bigblock" steel or brass block on there in the future...i like my 5springs lol! the stock block has holes for only 3 springs...i have a squier thin block but why not get a "bigblock" if youre going in that far?
Thanks Mike…I think the stock pups are for the most part, just fine from Monoprice at least for a budget guitar!! Are you going to have enough room for a full block 5 spring in there would be my only question…🎸👍
@@JimmyStewart1 guitarfetish has a "shorty" version of the bigblock for thinner bodies such as the squier affinity(my gilmour tribute strat)so it wont protrude... im thinking the os30 body is possibly the same thickness as the squier affinity strat model...maybe a tad thicker... im hoping it will work...well...im confident it will work lol!
@@JimmyStewart1 another update : upon playing some "as close to dick dale" surfy/reverby/slapbackness that i could i decided to simply leave it be... that bigblock might alter the sweet "clikkety clack" bridge tones im already getting... i popped the lil e string while tuning her up but i rokked it out anyway heehaaa!!

You know me Jimmy....Budget Man! I have a 70's CV and the OS40DLX. The JM p/u's are a bit noisy, but have the unique JM sound. The vibrato is as good or better on the Monoprice. The P90's in the Mono can be cleaned up, or made to howl. I like the Indio better.
I like them both, and I hear ya Pops!! I find the vibrato a bit “stiffer” on the Monoprice. Agree on the pups, but don’t find the JM pups to be noisy. Enjoy them both! Thanks for stopping in and sharing your thoughts! Much appreciated…👍🎸

@@JimmyStewart1 I am familiar with the Slick line up, but mostly the teles. The SL50, I've been looking at them for a few years. It has a better view of your stringing technique. By chance do you recall which video that was?

I asked if you would post offsets and here it was 10 months before this was posted.

Thanks for watching and commenting Louis…much appreciated! 🎸👍
Thanks so much for the “heads-up” mjvicc1952 👍
I always appreciate the discussion, and glad you enjoy it as well!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I agree with you on the Slick…truly appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts! 👍🎸
@@zuperdee
Wow…I heard it was lighter than expected but 5lbs 4 ounces?
Appreciate the heads up and suggestion.
Subscribed on strength of video, and I have one of the monoprice like yours and one with strat trem system and 3 single coils.
Thanks so much!! Truly appreciate your watching/commenting and of course the sub!! Much appreciated!! 🎸👍
Nice video and comparison. I'm really surprised by the quality and looks of the Monoprice. Both sounded great.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! The Monoprice line is a surprisingly good budget line! The OS40 is one of my favs from them. Truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and glad you enjoyed! Appreciate it…👍🎸
sweet "shootout" bro!
i dont have offset guitar yet but ive been looking at the monoprice os30....
maybe pop in some "slick" p90s in your os40 and have a "rematch" woooo!
Thanks so much for stopping in bro….the OS30 would be a good starter for your “offset” collection! 😎
The P90’s in the OS40 are actually quite nice, but when you compare them to Jazzmaster pups, you get to hear the difference in this style guitar, which of course was the main reason for shooting this video…well, that and to have some “Jazzmaster” fun with them both! 🤣
Thanks so much for stopping in…greatly appreciated!
@@birdman316
Nice!! I would play and listen to the OS30 before pulling the pups, but I know you like to “tinker” so….🤣
Have fun with it man, and enjoy! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 odd thing is i cant find any reviews on the os30 model...thats strange to me...
i like the "strat" style bridge on the os30...might even install a "bigblock" in it for "mo powaa baybeh!"
@@birdman316
I never looked for any reviews of it…guess you will have to do one! 👍
great vid bro!
im not sure im understanding the "rhythm circuit" tho...i always thought the neck pup was considered the "rhythm" side...maybe im missing something?
looked like 2 tone controls and mini selector switches too...im lost..."show me the way" as peter frampton would say lol!
@@JimmyStewart1 saweeet!!!
now i know...thanks!

My pleasure…👍👍
hey jimmy i had to stop in and watch this one again haha!!
update on my os30: ive decided to leave the stock pups in it...however id like to put a "bigblock" steel or brass block on there in the future...i like my 5springs lol!
the stock block has holes for only 3 springs...i have a squier thin block but why not get a "bigblock" if youre going in that far?
@@birdman316
Ok…great! I am sure you can make it work bro….🎸👍
@@JimmyStewart1 another update :
upon playing some "as close to dick dale" surfy/reverby/slapbackness that i could i decided to simply leave it be...
that bigblock might alter the sweet "clikkety clack" bridge tones im already getting...
i popped the lil e string while tuning her up but i rokked it out anyway heehaaa!!

Great Video. been looking to get an offset. this was very interesting. what's your thoughts on CNZ? found on Amazon. $249. soap bar pick ups. I like the Indio but not available. the CNZ IS very close to the same as the indio. just wondering if you have tried the CNZ. TY.
Thanks for stopping in David…I have not played any of the CNZ Audio guitars, but from what I understand they are basically Monoprice guitars rebranded.
Don’t know anything about their QC or Customer Service, but via Amazon and you are safe if you should need to return it. Appreciate your stopping in! 🎸👍
@@JimmyStewart1 Ty! 👊😎
Hi Jimmy, have you played the Xaviere offset? I was curious as to how you would compare it with the Monoprice, since there's only a $30 difference between the two
Hi Cesar…thanks for watching and commenting! No I have not played one…I did buy the Slick 56 and love it, but did not include it in this type of comparison as it’s a bit of a “different animal”. Appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts! Much appreciated! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 My JM also seems MUCH darker on the "jazz circuit". It works great with a real fuzz though!
@@popsfereal
Hmmm…that’s interesting! 👍
Hey Jimmy, Ted here! I thought the Monoprice has a more "jangely" sound, and I happen to like that sound. What is the guitar to your left with the single P 90? This was a very nice comparison between to really nice guitars.
Hey Ted (ummm..Mr. 1000). Truly appreciate your stopping in to visit my friend! That guitar is the Slick SL56…full review here on the channel for you to check out! It’s a great guitar with a nice P90 in the neck, and a hot Fullerton in the bridge. Check it out!! Picked up a great tweed case with it as well! Thanks again for stopping in…always nice to “see” you here! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 I am familiar with the Slick line up, but mostly the teles. The SL50, I've been looking at them for a few years. They have some design flaws that players complain about, but never seem to get fixed. Too bad. You did a stringing video quite a while back with the guitar on your bench. It has a better view of your stringing technique. By chance do you recall which video that was?
@@Mr.56Goldtop
The main complaint that I have heard about the Slick had to do with the “recessed” bridge, making it more difficult to string with some saying they have to remove the bridge to change strings. Not so on the SL56…
I have done a number of setup/restring vids…can’t think off the top of my head which one you are referring to. 🤪
@@JimmyStewart1 Yes, that was the main complaint.
@@Mr.56Goldtop
Yep!! No issue at all with this one…don’t know if they changed the design or what, but the SL56 is a new model and doesn’t suffer from it.
I'd like a JM but I don't have the skills (or tools) do do any work to get it playable.
Hi Rich…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Don’t be afraid of the JM…there are many that you may get that are perfectly playable right out of the box, the Monoprice in this video for example!
Appreciate your stopping in to the channel! 🎸👍
why are the frets so dull in finish? both guitars
@@stevenspikes5474
Hi Steven…thanks so much for watching and commenting. I don’t know…never really noticed actually. They are not Stainless Steel frets that so many are coming with these days…I also never buffed them out as they didn’t require it from a playing perspective. I am sure they would buff out nicely should I need/desire to do so….thanks so much for stopping into the channel! 🎸👍
Can’t go wrong with a Squier CV.
Hi Squirrel…thanks for watching and commenting. Agreed!! 😎

Thanks so much Phil…appreciate it! Either would be a good “budget” replacement, but the pups in the CV…”yummy”! 👍🎸
Is there a law about how many guitars one person is allowed to own?
Hi David…thanks for watching and commenting. I certainly hope not…🤣
I wonder how hard it would be to add that rythim circuit to the Monoprice?
Could be done I suppose, but you would have to do a bit of surgery, change out the pots, and do a treble bleed for the circuit…I would think it pretty involved but doable.
